A facile strategy to improve the cycle stability of 4.45 V LiCoO2 cathode in gel electrolyte system via succinonitrile additive under elevated temperature

Ning Xu,Hebing Zhou,Youhao Liao,Guanjie Li,Mengqing Xu,Weishan Li

The rapid capacity fading of LiCoO 2 cathodes under high temperature limits its further development in high energy density of lithium ion batteries , caused by the unmatched liquid electrolyte that tends to decompose when the working potential exceeds 4.2 V (vs. Li + /Li). Gel polymer membrane blended with PEO (poly(ethylene oxide)) and P(VdF-HFP) (poly(vinylidene fluoride- co -hexafluoropropylene)) is used to enhance the oxidative stability of liquid electrolyte in the polymer matrix . In order to maximize the capacity of LiCoO 2 cathode, proper amount of SN (succinonitrile) that helps to construct a stable CEI (cathode electrolyte interface) film is added into the electrolyte. The SN-contained GPE (gel polymer electrolyte) has the highest oxidative decomposition potential of 5.2 V and the lowest interfacial resistance . At 55 °C, the LiCoO 2 /GPE/Li coin-cell keeps 82% of capacity after 350 cycles in 3.0 V ~ 4.45 V at 1 C rate, compared with that of 9% capacity retention using the polyethylene separator saturated with liquid electrolyte. The enhancement in the cyclic stability under elevated temperature attributes to the dual strategies: the GPE guarantees the better oxidative stability by suppressing the further oxidative decomposition of liquid electrolyte, while the high quality CEI film formed by the SN additive protects the structural integrity of LiCoO 2 cathode.

Oxygen Defect Modulated Titanium Niobium Oxide on Graphene Arrays: An Open-Door for High-Performance 1.4 V Symmetric Supercapacitor in Acidic Aqueous Electrolyte

Xiyue Zhang,Shengjue Deng,Yinxiang Zeng,Minghao Yu,Yu Zhong,Xinhui Xia,Yexiang Tong,Xihong Lu

Despite appealing supercapacitive properties, the acidic aqueous supercapacitors (SCs) are still suffering from low operating voltage (<1 V) leading to unsatisfactory energy densities. Herein, for the first time, it is reported that the oxygen defect modulated Ti 2 Nb 10 O 29− x (TNO x ) on interlinked graphene array (denoted as TNO x G) can achieve a wide potential window up to 1.8 V in 1 m H 2 SO 4 electrolyte and deliver an extremely high capacitance up to 368.9 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 . Accompanying the improved charge transfer efficiency and preferable H ion diffusion, the oxygen defects in TNO x G are capable of stimulating more pseudocapacitive behavior and simultaneously suppressing oxygen evolution reaction. Furthermore, a 1.4 V high voltage quasi-solid-state TNO x G-based symmetric supercapacitor is demonstrated, yielding a maximum energy density of 0.58 mWh cm −3 at a power density of 0.57 W cm −3 and exceptionally excellent cycling durability. It is believed that this strategy of oxygen defect modulation to optimize reaction kinetics will lead to further improvements in the performance of high-voltage aqueous SCs.

A MIL-47(V) derived hierarchical lasagna-structured V2O3@C hollow microcuboid as an efficient sulfur host for high-performance lithium–sulfur batteries

Jing Yang,Bo Wang,Fan Jin,Yu Ning,Hao Luo,Jian Zhang,Fei Wang,Dianlong Wang,Yu Zhou

Lithium–sulfur batteries are promising candidates for the next generation of energy storage systems owing to their high energy density, low toxicity and abundant reserves of sulfur. However, sulfur has poor conductivity, large volume change during charge/discharge, and more importantly, the intermediate polysulfide (Li2Sn, 3 ≤ n≤8) produced in the cycling process is easily soluble in the electrolyte resulting in the “shuttle effect”, which have greatly limited the commercialization of lithium–sulfur batteries. Therefore, it is of great value to develop optimized sulfur cathode materials to improve electrode conductivity, buffer volume change and restrain the diffusion of polysulfide. In this work, we construct a V-MOF (MIL-47) derived V2O3@C hollow microcuboid with a hierarchical lasagna-like structure through hydrothermal synthesis followed by calcination, and employ it as a sulfur host for the first time. The fast anchoring of polysulfide by V2O3 nanoparticles and the high electronic conductivity of the 3D carbon framework can simultaneously inhibit the “shuttle effect” in the charge–discharge process and accelerate the kinetics of the redox process. Moreover, the special lasagna-like structure with appropriate voids generated during calcination not only provides many sites for sulfur loading, but also effectively alleviates the volume expansion problem during the electrochemical reaction. Therefore, the final fabricated sulfur cathode via the melt impregnation method exhibits good cycling stability (62.3% after 1000 cycles at 1C) and rate performance (663 mA h g−1 at 2C) at a relatively high sulfur loading of 3.7 mg cm−2.

A universal reverse-cool annealing strategy makes two-dimensional Ruddlesden-popper perovskite solar cells stable and highly efficient with Voc exceeding 1.2 V

Zhongqi Xie,Huiming Luo,Qing-Song Jiang,Ya Zhao,Yong Peng,Ligang Yuan,Keyou Yan,Mojtaba Abdi-Jalebi

Two-dimensional Ruddlesden-Popper (2D RP) layered metal-halide perovskites have garnered increasing attention due to their favorable optoelectronic properties and enhanced stability in comparison to their three-dimensional counterparts. Nevertheless, precise control over the crystal orientation of 2D RP perovskite films remains challenging, primarily due to the intricacies associated with the solvent evaporation process. In this study, we introduce a novel approach known as reverse-cool annealing (RCA) for the fabrication of 2D RP perovskite films. This method involves a sequential annealing process at high and low temperatures for wet perovskite films. The resulting RCA-based perovskite films show the smallest root-mean-square value of 23.1 nm, indicating a minimal surface roughness and a notably compact and smooth surface morphology. The low defect density in these 2D RP perovskite films with exceptional crystallinity suppresses non-radiative recombination, leading to a minimal non-radiative open-circuit voltage loss of 149 mV. Moreover, the average charge lifetime in these films is extended to 56.3 ns, thanks to their preferential growth along the out-of-plane direction. Consequently, the leading 2D RP perovskite solar cell achieves an impressive power conversion efficiency of 17.8% and an open-circuit voltage of 1.21 V. Additionally, the stability of the 2D RP perovskite solar cell, even without encapsulation, exhibits substantial improvement, retaining 97.4% of its initial efficiency after 1000 hours under a nitrogen environment. The RCA strategy presents a promising avenue for advancing the commercial prospects of 2D RP perovskite solar cells.

Enhancing As(V) and As(III) adsorption performance of low alumina fly ash with ferric citrate modification: Role of FeSiO3 and monosodium citrate

Xize Min,Caiyun Han,Liu Yang,Chundi Zhou

Fly ash and arsenic species have been regarded as contaminants that pollute the environment. Herein, low alumina fly ash (LAFA) was utilized to fabricate the As(V) and As(III) adsorbent via combining the routes of alkali fusion and incipient-wetness impregnation. The characterization results suggested that the grafted ferric citrate was coordinated to LAFA by substituting a Si 4+ to a Fe 3+ , and the compound monosodium citrate was observed. Based on the XPS analysis , the C–O and –COO - groups of monosodium citrate played the significant role in uptaking As(V) and As(III) species by chemical complexation, the FeOOH adsorbed As(V) and As(III) species via ion-exchange, and the Fe 2 O 3 oxidize As(III) into As(V). Additionally, it was observed that the As(V) removal performance by adsorbent prepared with different modifiers was in the order of FeC 6 H 5 O 7 (ca. 93.7%) > C 6 H 8 O 7 (84%) >  HCl (73%). And then, the optimal adsorbent synthesis condition for As(V) uptake was explored at ferric citrate loaded LAFA with 1:1 mass ratio (fly ash to NaOH) under temperature 923 K. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities of the optimal adsorbent were 2725.0 μgAs(V)/g and 2281.9 μgAs(III)/g, and the removal efficiency of As(V) and As(III) was near 100% for their initial concentrations below 500 ppb, where the residual arsenic concentration met the required standard in drinking water (lower than 10 ppb).

In Situ Exsolution of Ba3(VO4)2 Nanoparticles on a V-Doped BaCoO3−δ Perovskite Oxide with Enhanced Activity for Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Dehuo Zhou,Fuhe Le,Wei Jia,Xianhao Chen

The successful preparation of a perovskite-based heterostructure is important for broadening the applications of perovskites in the field of electrocatalysis, especially in a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Nevertheless, the limited active sites of perovskites severely hindered the HER properties. Herein, an in situ exsolution method was used to construct a nanocomposite based on V-doped BaCoO3−δ decorated with Ba3(VO4)2 (BVCO19) for alkaline HER. The exsolved Ba3(VO4)2 can induce more Co4+ ions on BaCoO3−δ, which serves as active sites for the release of H2. Meanwhile, by regulating the valency of V and Co species, the catalyst can reach a charge balance by generating more oxygen vacancies, which greatly facilitates the adsorption and dissociation of H2O molecules. The synergistic effect between the oxygen vacancies and high-valence Co4+ leads to an enhanced HER performance of BVCO19. The as-obtained catalyst delivers a low overpotential of 194 mV at 10 mA cm–2 as well as impressive stability for 100 h in alkaline media, which outperforms pristine BaCoO3−δ and most of the nonprecious-based perovskite oxides. This work provides new insights into the preparation of perovskite-based heterostructure for boosting HER.

V-Cu bimetallic oxide supported catalysts for synergistic removal of toluene and NOx from coal-fired flue gas: The crucial role of support

Beilong Lin,Ziyang Guo,Jianhan Li,Gaofei Xiao,Daiqi Ye,Yun Hu

It is a major challenge to achieve effective synergistic reduction of NO x and VOCs in coal-fired flue gas under complex working conditions. In this work, V-Cu bimetallic oxide catalysts with different supports were designed. V1-Cu5 bimetallic oxide supported on TiO 2 showed significantly higher activity for simultaneous toluene oxidation and NO x reduction than that supported on ZSM-5, SiO 2 and γ-Al 2 O 3 . Meanwhile, it exhibited excellent stability and anti-poisoning performance, and could block the formation of toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in by-products. Compared with ZSM-5, SiO 2 and γ-Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 as support was conducive to the formation of abundant acidic sites and oxygen vacancies. In addition, the strong interaction between the metal active sites and TiO 2 accelerated the electron transfer from Cu to adsorbed O 2 , thus promoting the formation of active O 2− . This work can provide guidance for the development of catalysts designed for the simultaneous catalytic removal of NO x and VOCs.

Effective roxarsone (ROX) and arsenate (As(V)) sequestration from water with magnetic hollow Fe3O4-based Mg/Al layered double hydroxide: Performance and mechanism

Zhipan Wen,Shen Li,Ge Zhang,Runqiao Chen,Yalei Zhang,Xiaoping Liao,Gang Cheng,Rong Chen

Magnetic hollow Fe 3 O 4 -based Mg/Al layered double hydroxide (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @LDH) was successfully synthesized and subsequently the laboratory scale tests were conducted to systematically investigate the sequestration of roxarsone (ROX) and arsenate (As(V)). Owing to its abundant surface metal hydroxyl (M-OH) groups and exchangeable CO 3 2− groups in the interlayer of MgAl-LDH nanosheets , the obtained Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @LDH exhibited remarkable behavior for As(V) and ROX removal. Both As(V) and ROX could be effectively immobilized at a relatively wide pH range (3–8), and the maximum adsorption capacities of As(V) and ROX were 96.47 and 71.67 mg/g, respectively. Meanwhile, the negligible mutual effect demonstrated the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @LDH can simultaneously remove inorganic and organic arsenic compounds . The competitive cations/anions (except for PO 4 3− ions) and ionic strength were negligible on As(V) and ROX removal, whereas the inhibitory effect stem from humic acid (HA) seemed to be more seriously for As(V) than that of ROX. Adsorption mechanism of As(V)/ROX were attributed to electrostatic attraction and ion/ligand exchange process, whereas hydrogen bonding and π-π interaction may also involve in the ROX removal. Furthermore, the excellent performance in fix-bed column tests and prominent reusability indicated this magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @LDH was a promising candidate adsorbent and of great potential application in organic/inorganic As-contamination wastewater treatment .

Insight into binding mechanism between three whey proteins and mogroside V by multi-spectroscopic and silico methods: Impacts on structure and foaming properties

Jinzhe Li,Yuxuan Huang,Wenjuan Zhang,Akhunzada Bilawal,Narantuya Sukhbaatar,Batsukh Tsembeltsogt,Zhanmei Jiang,Zhishen Mu

In this work, the interaction mechanism, structure and foaming properties between three whey proteins (α-lactalbumin (ALa), β-lactoglobulin (BLg) and bovine serum albumin (BSA)) and Mogroside V (Mog) at pH 7.0 were systematically formulated via multi-spectroscopic analysis and silico methods. Mog quenched the fluorescence of three whey proteins in a static mode. Mog had greater binding affinity for ALa than that for BLg or BSA. Hydrogen bonds, van der Waals force and hydrophobic interaction acted as the primary driven forces in ALa/BLg/BSA-Mog system. Moreover, content of α-helix in ALa and β-sheet in BLg decreased after Mog addition, whereas there was no significant change in the secondary structure of BSA. In addition, hydrophobic crevice in ALa, “bottom of β-barrel” in BLg and interfacial region between two domains in BSA were the binding areas for Mog using molecular docking. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation further demonstrated that the complex of ALa and Mog possessed the lowest binding free energy and most stable state. Furthermore, compared with single proteins, the foaming ability of protein/Mog complexes were improved. Especially, Ala-Mog attained the highest increase rate. Bubble morphology presented that three whey proteins containing Mog possessed compacter, smaller and even bubbles. This research could establish theoretical basis for the binding mechanism between different food proteins and low weight surfactants. Besides, whey protein-saponin complexes could be served as the novel food-grade foaming agents applied in food industry.

Doping and heterojunction strategies for constructing V-doped Ni3FeN/Ni anchored on N-doped graphene tubes as an efficient overall water splitting electrocatalyst

Guanying Song,Siqi Luo,Qing Zhou,Jiachen Zou,Yusheng Lin,Lei Wang,Guicun Li,Alan Meng,Zhenjiang Li

Exploring the integration regulation strategies to boost the electrocatalytic performance and elucidating the manipulation mechanism are critical for the hydrogen economy. Herein, heteroatom doping and heterojunction strategies were integrated to engineer a V-Ni3FeN/Ni@N-GTs bifunctional electrocatalyst, where the V-Ni3FeN/Ni heterojunction consisting of V doped Ni3FeN and Ni was anchored on N-doped graphene nanotubes (N-GTs). Benefiting from the modulation of the d-band center of hosts Ni and Fe by V doping and the regulation of local charge distribution induced by the V-Ni3FeN/Ni heterojunction, combined with the introduction of the conductive N-GTs skeleton, V-Ni3FeN/Ni@N-GTs delivers overpotentials of 66 and 252 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for the HER and OER, respectively. Besides, when it is used as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting, a low cell voltage of 1.55 V is needed to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2. This work provides new inspiration for developing other promising electrocatalysts based on the integration of various strategies.

Sea-Urchin carbon nitride with carbon vacancies (C-v) and oxygen substitution (O-s) for photodegradation of Tetracycline: Performance, mechanism insight and pathways

Hao Zhang,Yunxiong Zeng,Xinqing Wang,Xingyu Zhan,Jingcai Xu,Ao Jin,Bo Hong

The fast recombination of electron-hole pairs results in low photoactivity, limiting carbon nitride further application in wastewater purification. To address this issue, regulation of electron configuration via optimizing surface atom properties is a promising strategy for improving the separation of electron-hole pairs. Here, sea-urchin carbon nitride (SUCN-6) with C-v and O-s mediated electronic structures were facile prepared, endowing it with a decrease in transportation resistance of charge carriers and increased activation towards oxygen. Under visible light, the SUCN-6 showed a removal efficiency of ∼ 89% towards tetracycline (TC) in 20 min and no obvious decaying after five consecutive cycles. This TC photodegradation follows a first-order kinetic, and its kinetic constant reaches 0.0908 min −1 , which is 2.35 folds higher than that of pristine carbon nitride. In addition, several crucial factors of practical wastewater purification (such as pH, TC concentration, water sources, inorganic salts, and organic matters) that might affect photoactivity were investigated. Moreover, the degradation pathways of TC and intermediates were detected by an HPLC-MS and electron spin resonance instrument, and a possible photodegradation mechanism over SUCN-6 was elucidated. This study offers new insights into the photocatalysis kinetics and photodegradation mechanism over carbon nitride for environmental remediation.

Insight into the mechanism of ferrate(VI) activation by mineral zincite for carbamazepine degradation: Role of Fe(V) species and free radical induction

Ji Shu,Xiping Xu,Yichong Zhang,Kanming Wang,Yuanxin Zhu,Xiran Lian,Hongyu Wang

This paper describes the ferrate(VI) (Fe(VI)) activation by mineral zincite for efficient micropollutants removal such as carbamazepine (CBZ). In the Fe(VI)-zincite activation system, the zincite stimulated the Fe(V) production and impelled the Fenton reaction by preventing the transformation of Fe(II), generated from the Fe(VI), to Fe(III). Furthermore, adducts formation between Lewis sites derived from zincite and Fe(VI) induced the generation of organic radical. The mechanism was unveiled via kinetic study, reactive species identification, Fe(VI)-zincite deposit characterization and CBZ degradation products detection. Results indicated that hydroxyl radical (•OH), Fe(V) and carboxyl radical (R-COO ) contribute to the CBZ degradation in Fe(VI)-zincite system and play different roles with pH change. The optimum application condition of [Fe(VI)]:[CBZ] = 5:1, [zincite] = 5 mg/L, the zincite particle size of 500–750 mesh and pH of 7.0 was further determined. Under this condition, 91% CBZ removal and 61% mineralization were achieved by the Fe(VI)-zincite system. The feasibility of Fe(VI)-zincite system for real condition was also evaluated. The CBZ removal and mineralization were decreased 6% and 8%, respectively, suggesting that Fe(VI)-zincite system was still highly effective for CBZ degradation in real natural water. Furthermore, amphoteric property of zincite contributed to the stability of pH in deficient buffering solution, ensuring the stability of reaction activity. Importantly, this study provided new insight into the Fe(VI) activation which was not achieved by the traditional introduced reducing substance, and has potential applications for micropollutant remediation in aquatic environment.
