Enhanced degradation of chloramphenicol through peroxymonosulfate and visible light over Z-scheme Photocatalysts: Synergetic performance and mechanism insights

Yi Wu,Shuai Mao,Chun Liu,Fubin Pei,Fengyun Wang,Qingli Hao,Mingzhu Xia,Wu Lei

Effective removal of antibiotics in the environment can be a demanding issue concerning the ecosystem and human health. Photocatalysis and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation have become important methods to effectively remove stubborn pollutants. In this work, by integrating these two technologies, an efficient system for degrading chloramphenicol (CAP) in water was proposed. The system was constructed by coupling strontium-doped lanthanum cobaltate (LSCO5) with chlorine-doped carbon nitride (CGCN). By doping, the increase of oxygen vacancy and the adjustment of bandgap were realized. Photoluminescence and electrochemical impedance experiments showed that the heterojunction can promote electron transfer and photogenerated carrier separation. Under the synergistic effect of PMS oxidation and photocatalysis, the prepared composite with an optimal loading of 40% LSCO5 can degrade 95.6% of CAP within 20 min. Degradation experiments on different pollutants proved the versatility of the catalytic system. The enhanced degradation mechanism of CAP was explored based on the assessment of the degradation efficiency of CAP, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and quenching experiments. Through liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis, a possible route for CAP degradation was also proposed. This research provides some inspiration for the remediation of polluted water with perovskite-based catalyst under the synergistic effect of PMS and photocatalysis.

Hollow Core-Shell potassium Phosphomolybdate@Cadmium Sulfide@Bismuth sulfide Z-Scheme tandem heterojunctions toward optimized Photothermal-Photocatalytic performance

Yongqian Cui,Zipeng Xing,Meijun Guo,Yalu Qiu,Bin Fang,Zhenzi Li,Shilin Yang,Wei Zhou

A hollow core–shell potassium phosphomolybdate (KMoP)@cadmium sulfide (CdS)@bismuth sulfide (Bi 2 S 3 ) Z-scheme tandem heterojunction is fabricated by a simple hydrothermal strategy and kept in a water bath to continue the reaction. At the same time, the ternary structure combined Keggin-type polyoxometalate with two photosensitive sulfide semiconductors to form a stable hollow core–shell heterojunction. KMoP@CdS@Bi 2 S 3 with a narrow band gap of ∼ 1.2 eV also has excellent photothermal performance, which may further promote photocatalytic efficiency. The hollow core–shell KMoP@CdS@Bi 2 S 3 tandem heterojunction shows excellent H 2 production performance, Cr VI reduction ability and photocatalytic degradation performance of highly toxic tetracycline (TC). Under visible light irradiation , the photocatalytic H 2 generation rate of the KMoP@CdS@Bi 2 S 3 tandem heterojunction reaches 831 μmol h −1 , which is 103 times higher than that of pristine KMoP. The photocatalytic reduction efficiency of Cr VI and degradation efficiency of TC are as high as 95.5 and 97.51%, ∼4 times higher than that of KMoP. The boosted photocatalytic performance can be ascribed to the formation of core–shell Z-scheme tandem heterojunctions favoring spatial charge separation and the narrow band gap, which extends the photoresponse to visible light/NIR regions. When TC and Cr VI exist at the same time, the reduction efficiency of Cr VI can be as high as 99.64% because the intermediate of TC degradation can promote the reduction of Cr VI . In addition, the photocatalytic performance of the KMoP@CdS@Bi 2 S 3 heterojunction remains nearly constant after 4 recycles, which indicates high stability. The design strategy may provide new insights for preparing other high-performance core–shell tandem heterojunction photocatalysts for solar energy conversion .

Direct Z-scheme hierarchical heterostructures of oxygen-doped g-C3N4/In2S3 with efficient photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction activity

Anyu Liu,Jianqiang Hu,Jiale He,Xinyue Huang,Na Hu,Yuqin Li,Qingling Huang,Shien Guo,Xin Liu,Zhen Yang,Yong Zhou,Zhigang Zou

O-doped g-C3N4/In2S3 hierarchical heterostructures with a direct Z-scheme mechanism were devised and constructed simply via loading In2S3 nanoflakes on the surface of O-doped g-C3N4 (OCN) hierarchical structures, in situ, employing pre-obtained OCN (prepared by condensation of oxalic acid and urea) and indium(III) dimethyldithiocarbamate (In(dedc)3) as precursors. Analyses of the energy band structure, density functional theory (DFT) computations and DMPO-ESR spin-trapping experiments demonstrate that the formation of a perfect heterointerface with a staggered alignment of band edges between OCN and In2S3 (IS), owing to their close contact, enables photoexcited carriers to migrate via a Z-scheme route, which can maintain the higher reduction and oxidation capability of electrons and holes, respectively. Furthermore, the Z-scheme OCN/IS heterostructures efficaciously facilitate the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, as demonstrated using PL spectra, transient photocurrent densities and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS). These lead to the enhanced photocatalytic activity towards reducing Cr(VI) into Cr(III). Besides, the integration of OCN with IS can enhance the responsiveness to visible light based on the results of UV-vis DRS, thereby inducing the formation of more electrons and holes, and also contributing to the improvement of the photocatalytic activity for Cr(VI) reduction. In consequence, all the pre-prepared OCN/IS hybrids possess markedly improved photocatalytic activities for Cr(VI) reduction, relative to pure OCN and pristine IS under visible light (λ > 420 nm) illumination. With the increase in the In(dedc)3 to OCN mass ratio (R), the photocatalytic activities of these OCN/IS hybrids increase first and then decrease. The sample with an optimum R of 0.9 (OCN/IS-0.9) can remove nearly 100% of Cr(VI) after 40 min of illumination, being superior to most of g-C3N4-based and IS-based photocatalysts. Its reaction rate constant for Cr(VI) photoreduction (0.08947 min−1) is 56.7 fold and 8.8 fold higher than that of pure OCN (0.00155 min−1) and pristine IS (0.00913 min−1), respectively. This work affords a deep understanding on designing preeminent Z-scheme photocatalysts towards the degradation of Cr(VI) under visible-light irradiation.

Bi2S3–In2S3 Heterostructures for Efficient Photoreduction of Highly Toxic Cr6+ Enabled by Facet-Coupling and Z-Scheme Structure

Linjuan Wang,Siva Karuturi,Ling Zan

The construction of Z-scheme photocatalyst materials mimicking the natural photosynthesis system provides many advantages, including increased light harvesting, spatially separated reductive and oxidative active sites and strong redox ability. Here, a novel Bi 2 S 3 nanorod@In 2 S 3 nanoparticle heterojunction photocatalyst synthesized through one-pot hydrothermal method for Cr 6+ reduction is reported. A systematic investigation of the microstructural and compositional characteristics of the heterojunction catalyst confirms an intimate facet coupling between (440) crystal facet of In 2 S 3 and (060) crystal facet of Bi 2 S 3 , which provides a robust heterojunction interface for charge transfer. When tested under visible-light irradiation, the Bi 2 S 3 –In 2 S 3 heterojunction photocatalyst with 15% Bi 2 S 3 loading content achieves the highest Cr 6+ photoreduction efficiency of nearly 100% with excellent stability, which is among the best-reported performances for Cr 6+ removal. Further examination using optical, photoelectrochemical, impedance spectroscopy, and electron spin resonance spectroscopy characterizations reveal greatly improved photogenerated charge separation and transfer efficiency, and confirm Z-scheme electronic structure of the photocatalyst. The Z-scheme Bi 2 S 3 –In 2 S 3 photocatalyst demonstrated here presents promise for the removal of highly toxic Cr 6+ , and could also be of interest in photocatalytic energy conversion.

Nano-flower like NiO modified BiOBr composites with direct Z-scheme: Improved visible light degradation activity for dyes

Xuehui Li,Yujie Peng,Tao Tian,Dantong Wang,Xiaozhen Ren,Xipeng Pu

Facing environmental pollution, the development of semiconductor photocatalysts with efficient electron-hole pairs separation is necessary for better performance optimization and utilization. Here, a direct Z-scheme BiOBr–NiO-x% (x = 5, 10, 20, 30) photocatalysts with outstanding photocatalytic activity for dye degradation were prepared via the hydrothermal process. The XRD, XPS , FESEM, HRTEM and UV–vis DRS were used to characterize the components, phase structure, morphology and optical properties of the prepared samples. The prepared nano-flower like BiOBr–NiO-x% (x = 5, 10, 20, 30) composites had an extensive visible light absorption range and more vigorous absorption intensity than pure BiOBr. All the prepared composites exhibited better photocatalytic activity for rhodamine (RhB) degradation than that of pure BiOBr, with BiOBr/NiO-20% showing the best photocatalytic efficiency. The photocatalytic efficiency had reached 98% within 50 min for the BiOBr/NiO-20% composite. Due to the tight interfacial contact and matching band positions between BiOBr and NiO, a direct Z-scheme BiOBr/NiO heterojunction was built, which accelerated the visible light absorption, superior separation of photoinduced electron-hole pairs in space and improved the oxidation and reduction capacity of the catalysts, further leading to the excellent photocatalytic activity for degradation of RhB.

Yuan Guo,Wanqing Liu,Wei Duan,Siyu Wang,Liqun Jia,Guoqing Zhang,Baolin Zhu,Weiping Huang,Shoumin Zhang

Photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen generation is a significant pathway for sustainable energy conversion and production. The photocatalysts with a Z-scheme water splitting charge transfer pathway is superior due to the good separation and migration ability of photoexcited charge carriers. Herein, Co3O4/g-C3N4photocatalysts with Z-scheme charge transfer pathway were successfully constructed by an electrostatic interaction-annealing method. The as-prepared Co3O4/g-C3N4ultra-thin nanosheets were tested and analyzed by XRD, EA, ICP, SEM, TEM, AFM, XPS, UV-Vis DRS, PL and photoelectrochemical measurements. Moreover, the influences of fabrication parameters on performance of Co3O4/g-C3N4catalysts were investigated, and 0.5% Co3O4/g-C3N4exhibited the optimal activity. Based on the characterization and catalytic performance, the Z-scheme charge transfer pathway of Co3O4/g-C3N4was established and put forward. To further improve the catalytic performance of Co3O4/g-C3N4, 0.5% Pt was added as a co-catalyst. The obtained Pt/0.5% Co3O4/g-C3N4was recyclable and remained the original catalytic water splitting performance within 20 h. The modification of Co3O4and Pt improved the separation and migration of e−and h+, and induced the increased hydrogen evolution rate of g-C3N4.Keywords:Co3O4/g-C3N4ultra-thin nanosheets;Z-scheme charge transfer pathway;photocatalytic;water splitting;H2evolution

A photoelectrochemical sensor based on Z-Scheme TiO2@Au@CdS and molecularly imprinted polymer for uric acid detection

Zhao Junhong,Cheng Jing,Sun Yudong,Liu Jiang,Chen Wen,Xu Yi,Yang Jiao,Li Yingchun

A novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor based on “Z-scheme” TiO 2 @Au@CdS and molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was developed for the non-invasive detection of uric acid (UA). The “Z-scheme” material, consisting of an electron-transfer system (Au) and two isolated photochemical systems (CdS, TiO 2 ), was synthesized by chemical deposition method and it worked as a substrate for electro-polymerization of MIP. Due to the high photoelectric conversion efficiency provided by TiO 2 @Au@CdS and specific imprinting effect afforded by MIP, the sensor displayed desirable sensing performance with the merits of sensitivity, selectivity, repeatability, and stability. The linear range for UA detection is from 1 nM to 9 μM with the detection limit of 0.3 nM (S/ N  = 3). Moreover, the assay was successfully utilized to measure UA in human tears and offered a reliable result. The incorporation of MIP and “Z-scheme” material into a PEC sensor system is expected to provide a promising strategy for detecting other small molecules. Graphical abstract

Fabrication of a Z-Scheme Heterojunction Polyhedral-Shaped BiOIO3/MIL-53(Fe) Photocatalyst for Enhancing Gaseous Hg0 Removal

Jianwen Guo,Jiang Wu,Yu Guan,Jianmin Wang,Qizhen Liu,Xu Mao,Xuemei Qi,Ping He,Huaning Wang

A Z-scheme heterojunction polyhedral-shaped BiOIO3/MIL-53(Fe) photocatalyst is prepared by a solvothermal method. The samples are characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, UV–vis, PL, and other material characterization analysis methods. The photocatalytic performance of photocatalysts is studied for removal of vapor-phase mercury (Hg0) under visible-light irradiation. The results suggest that the Hg0 removal efficiency of the BiOIO3/MIL-53(Fe) composite is significantly improved compared with that of MIL-53(Fe). When the molar ratio of BiOIO3 and MIL-53(Fe) is 2:1, the BiOIO3/MIL-53(Fe) composite photocatalyst exhibits the best Hg0 removal efficiency, reaching 74.19%. BiOIO3 and MIL-53(Fe) form a Z-scheme heterojunction with a suitable energy band structure, which results in the effective separation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs and delays their recombination. Finally, the photocatalytic oxidation mechanism of Hg0 by the BiOIO3/MIL-53(Fe) composite is proposed, which paves the way for the study of the built-in electric field and electron transport channels between binary photocatalyst materials.

Highly enhanced H2 evolution of MoO3/g-C3N4 hybrid composites based on a direct Z-scheme photocatalytic system

Kunqiao Li,Wanbao Wu,Yanqiu Jiang,Zhe Wang,Xing Liu,Junzhuo Li,Debin Xia,Xianzhu Xu,Jizhuang Fan,Kaifeng Lin

The Z-scheme photocatalytic system has great potential in solar energy conservation with simultaneous wide light-absorption range, efficient electron–hole pair separation and strong redox ability. Herein, a direct Z-scheme g-C3N4/MoO3 photocatalytic composite with oxygen vacancies is successfully fabricated via a facile in situ method of a one-pot pyrolysis strategy. The as-prepared g-C3N4/MoO3 possesses a porous architecture with increased specific surface area. The existence of an oxygen vacancy in MoO3 is verified by XPS, UV-DRS analysis and electrochemical measurements. The g-C3N4/MoO3 exhibits superior visible-light photocatalytic performance for water splitting, as evidenced by an about 17-fold (20.52 μmol h−1) increase in the rate of H2 evolution relative to pristine C3N4 (1.23 μmol h−1). According to the characterization results and boosted photocatalytic performance, the migration and separation of photoinduced charge carriers in g-C3N4/MoO3 follows a possible mechanism based on a Z-scheme photocatalytic system constructed by the oxygen vacancies. The O-vacancy functions as the recombination and storage center for fast charge transfer through two components. The combined effect of defective MoO3 and a Z-scheme interfacial heterojunction has achieved greatly enhanced photocatalytic performance. This work demonstrates the facilitation effect of an effective Z-scheme system involving oxygen vacancies on the charge transfer to enhance the photocatalytic activity for water splitting.

Cu media constructed Z-scheme heterojunction of UiO-66-NH2/Cu2O/Cu for enhanced photocatalytic induction of CO2

Xiaoxue Zhao,Linlin Sun,Xian Jin,Mengyang Xu,Shikang Yin,Jinze Li,Xin Li,Dong Shen,Yan Yan,Pengwei Huo

Z-scheme heterojunction can effectively separate photo-generated carriers and enhance photocatalytic activity of CO 2 reduction. In this work, we report indirect Z-scheme heterojunction of UiO-66-NH 2 /Cu 2 O/Cu, which achieves highly CO 2 photocatalytic conversion to CO. Among these, UiO-66-NH 2 /Cu 2 O/Cu-0.39 (U/C/Cu-0.39) displays the best activity with a CO yield of 4.54 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which is 37.8 times higher than that for UiO-66-NH 2 and 50.4 times higher than that for Cu 2 O. Cu not only acts as the electron conductor of the indirect Z-scheme heterojunction to promote the charge carrier transmission, but also acts as the active site of CO 2 reduction. The increase of active sites and the CO 2 adsorption capacity results in the superior photocatalytic performances.

Noble-metal-free Z-Scheme MoS2–CdS/WO3–MnO2 nanocomposites for photocatalytic overall water splitting under visible light

Dingqiong Wei,Yao Ding,Zhaohui Li

To fabricate an efficient two-component Z-scheme system for visible light induced overall water splitting, CdS/WO 3 nanocomposites , with cubic CdS nanoparticles grown on the surface of hexagonal WO 3 nanorods , were prepared via a facile precipitation of Cd 2+ with S 2− in the presence of pre-obtained hexagonal WO 3 nanorods. MnO 2 and MoS 2 , the co-catalysts for O 2 and H 2 generation respectively, were selectively deposited on WO 3 and CdS in the CdS/WO 3 nanocomposites. The resultant MoS 2 –CdS/WO 3 –MnO 2 composites show photocatalytic activity for overall water splitting under visible light, with an optimized performance observed over 2.0%MoS 2 -0.2 CdS/WO 3 -1.0%MnO 2 . The visible light induced overall water splitting over MoS 2 –CdS/WO 3 –MnO 2 nanocomposites can be attributed to the presence of a Z-scheme charge transfer pathway in the CdS/WO 3 nanocomposites, ie, the transfer of the photo-generated electrons from the CB of WO 3 to the VB of CdS to recombine with the photo-generated holes through an efficient interface between cubic CdS and hexagonal WO 3 . The left photo-generated holes in VB of WO 3 and the photo-generated electrons in CB of CdS therefore can accomplish the water oxidation and water reduction simultaneously, with the assistance of the surface deposited cocatalysts (MnO 2 and MoS 2 ). This work demonstrated the great potential of fabricating the two-component direct Z-scheme photocatalytic systems for overall water splitting from two semiconductors with a staggered band structure .

Two dimensional Co3O4/g-C3N4 Z-scheme heterojunction: Mechanism insight into enhanced peroxymonosulfate-mediated visible light photocatalytic performance

Chongyue Jin,Min Wang,Zhilin Li,Jin Kang,Yan Zhao,Jin Han,Zengmin Wu

In this study, to improve peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-mediated visible-light photocatalytic performance of g-C 3 N 4 in antibiotics degradation and elucidate its mechanism, an ultrathin Co 3 O 4 nanomeshes/g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets 2D Z-scheme heterojunction composite (x% Co 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 ) was successfully prepared calcining the mixtures of MOF-Co ultrathin nanosheets and g-C 3 N 4 . This unique nanomeshes/nanosheets structure with large SSA (153.92 m 2 /g) possessed an abundance of accessible active sites and large area intimate interfaces between Co 3 O 4 and g-C 3 N 4 , thus remarkably promoting the separation and transport of charge carriers. The as-prepared optimal 10% Co 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 composites exhibited excellent degradation efficiency toward tetracycline (TC) under visible light irradiation and were further enhanced with the addition of PMS. The mechanism of the enhanced TC degradation in Co 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 /Vis/PMS system was investigated in detail based on the characterization of the catalysts, TC degradation efficiency assessment, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements, and reactive oxygen species (ROSs) quenching results. The TC degradation pathway was proposed based on the intermediates identified by the gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC–MS) measurements. This study provides a facile and promising path for the remediation of contaminated water via PMS mediated photocatalysis over highly active g-C 3 N 4 -based catalysts.
