Periodontitis, an inflammatory bone resorption disease associated with dental plaque, poses significant challenges for effective treatment. In this study, we developed Mino@ZIF-8 nanoparticles inspired by the periodontal microenvironment and the unique properties of zeolitic imidazolate framework 8, aiming to address the complex pathogenesis of periodontitis. Transcriptome analysis revealed the active engagement of Mino@ZIF-8 nanoparticles in innate and adaptive inflammatory host defense and cellular metabolic remodeling. Through sustained release of the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agent minocycline hydrochloride (Mino) and the generation of Zn2+ with pro-antioxidant effects during degradation, Mino@ZIF-8 nanoparticles synergistically alleviate inflammation and oxidative damage. Notably, our study focuses on the pivotal role of zinc ions in mitochondrial oxidation protection. Under lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation, periodontal ligament cells undergo a metabolic shift from oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) to glycolysis, leading to reduced ATP production and increased reactive oxygen species levels. However, Zn2+ effectively rebalances the glycolysis-OXPHOS imbalance, restoring cellular bioenergetics, mitigating oxidative damage, rescuing impaired mitochondria, and suppressing inflammatory cytokine production through modulation of the AKT/GSK3β/NRF2 pathway. This research not only presents a promising approach for periodontitis treatment but also offers novel therapeutic opportunities for zinc-containing materials, providing valuable insights into the design of biomaterials targeting cellular energy metabolism regulation.

Chloride-induced corrosion of steel reinforcement is the key factor leading to the degradation of reinforced concrete building durability. Improving the corrosion resistance of oxide scale of rebar has always been a research hotspot in the field of civil engineering materials. A ZIF-8 modified Ce–Sol–gel (ZCS) film was prepared on oxide scale of plain steel rebars by sol–gel method. It is observed that the | Z | 0.01 Hz value of the ZCS film reached 320 kΩ cm 2 , which is about 29 times higher than that of blank rebar in simulated concrete pore (SCP) solution with 0.1 M NaCl. Then, they were inserted into mortar block and curing them in a curing box at T = 20 ± 2 °C and RH = 95 ± 2% for 28 days. Subsequently, these samples were subject to electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 3.5 wt% NaCl. The | Z | 0.01 Hz value of the rebar with the ZCS film was six times higher than that of the blank rebar after immersing for 20 days, resulting in an overall increase in corrosion resistance for rebar. The results indicated that the modification by ZIF-8 could reduce the porosity of Ce–sol–gel (CS) film and improved the “labyrinth effect” of the film. Additionally, the negative charge on the surface of ZIF-8 in alkaline condition increased the repulsion effect with Cl − , significantly reducing the sensitivity of rebar to Cl − .

The unique periodic structure of photonic crystals demonstrates an effective slow photon effect that enhances the interaction between light and matter. This study designed and prepared MOF photonic crystal beads, and significantly improved the photocatalytic efficiency by utilizing the slow light effect. Utilizing microfluidic technology, ZIF-8 was self-assembled to form photonic crystal beads (PCB-Z) to enhance adsorption properties and light absorption. The surface of PCB-Z is modified with CdS to form a heterostructure (PCB-ZC), which widens the absorption spectrum, reduces the carrier recombination rate, and increases the specific surface area, while the photocurrent intensity of PCB-ZC is about 1.8 and 29 times that of CdS and PCB-Z. Under the combined effect of photonic crystal structure, ZIF-8/CdS heterojunction and slow photon effect, the degradation rate of Rhodamine B by PCB-ZC was 15.22 times higher than the disordered ZIF-8 powder, and the photocatalytic performance was significantly improved. The dominant role of holes in Rhodamine B degradation was confirmed by free radical trapping experiments and EPR tests. This research confirms that MOF-based photonic crystals can be assembled into periodic structures to enhance adsorption properties and light absorption, which provides a new paradigm for the development of MOF-based photocatalysts.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have garnered significant attention owing to their merits of high safety, high theoretical specific capacity, low cost, and environmental benignity. However, irreversible challenges posed by side reactions and dendrite growth on zinc anodes have impeded their commercial deployment in large-scale energy storage applications. In this paper, a ZnCu-ZIF protective layer was in-situ grown on Zn foil through simple redox and coordination reactions to address the above issues. The protective layer efficiently isolates the anode surface from the aqueous electrolyte, thereby curbing severe parasitic reactions. Additionally, it facilitates uniform Zn deposition and mitigates dendrite growth. The findings indicate that the ZnCu-ZIF@Zn-1h symmetric cell maintains stable cycling for 2600 h at 1 mA cm −2 and 1 mAh cm −2 , demonstrating exceptional cycle stability. In addition, the ZnCu-ZIF@Zn-1h||MnO 2 full cell has a high specific capacity of 285.6 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and demonstrates excellent rate performance. Meanwhile, it retains 82.9% of its initial capacity after 1000 cycles at 1 A g −1 , exemplifying outstanding electrochemical durability. This work thus provides a novel paradigm for the facile scalable fabrication of highly reversible Zn metal anodes, highlighting significant potential for practical implementation.

Although pyrene-based fluorophores possess some merits including outstanding fluorescent (FL) emission and long-lived excited intermediates, their practicability have been dramatically limited by an obvious aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) impact. Due to the isolation effect of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), pyrene-based fluorophores are utilized as the FL dopant rather than organic ligands to anchor onto the porous supports for inferior ACQ effect along with enhanced FL emission. Herein, a one-step alkaline coprecipitation method was proposed to efficiently load 4,4′,4″,4″‘-(1,9-dihydropyrene-1,3,6,8-tetrayl)tetrabenzoic acid onto ZIF-8 MOFs (Py@ZIF-8). Since ZIF-8 effectively rigidified the location of the FL emitter, the decreased ACQ effect of Py@ZIF-8 was realized along with an intriguing FL quantum yield of 77.3 %. Furthermore, the protective activity of the rigid framework endowed Py@ZIF-8 with an attractive long-term FL stability. Note that, green FL microspheres could remarkably quench the luminescent signal of Py@ZIF-8 based on the marked Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) effect. The FRET donor-acceptor pair of Py@ZIF-8 and green FL microspheres was employed to establish a sandwich ratiometric FL protocol for cardiac troponin I. Superior to a traditional single-signal mode, the dual-signal ratiometric mode displayed an enhanced sensitivity, wherein a low detection limit of 0.5 pg/mL (3σ) was achieved. Moreover, the quantitation results of cardiac troponin I in serum samples by the proposed FL method showed a good agreement with those by a commercial Abbott chemiluminometer. The reliable ratiometric platform exhibited improved precision and preferable feasibility of pyrene-doped MOFs in sensitive diagnosis and trace testing.

Advances in nuclear energy have led to steady accumulation of radioactive uranium wastewater, requiring the worldwide implementation of safe and efficient disposal methods. Adsorption has become a viable solution for purifying uranium-contaminated wastewater and recovering uranium resources due to its efficiency, environmental compatibility, and simplicity. This study utilized konjac glucomannan’s (KGM) gel properties to create a ZIF-8@KGM aerogel. Liquid nitrogen-induced rapid directional freezing combined with KGM’s exceptional plasticity yielded an aerogel with a uniform layered structure and directional channels. ZIF-8 (2-Methylimidazolezincsalt) particles are dispersed uniformly within the aerogel pores, significantly improving adsorption site accessibility. Compared with ZIF-8, the [email protected] aerogel achieved improved kinetics and adsorption capacity for uranium separation. After 90 min in a 200 mg/L acidic U(VI) solution, it achieved 96.4 % removal efficiency and a maximum capacity of 687.8 mg/g. Mechanistic studies revealed synergistic adsorption: KGM’s oxygen-containing functional groups coordinated with uranyl ions, together with the nitrogen-containing groups and hydroxyl Zn(Ⅱ) sites on ZIF-8 particles. Overall, this approach provides a promising strategy for uranium wastewater remediation that exhibits broader applicability in water treatment.

In this work, amino-modified ZIF-90 (NH2-ZIF-90) was prepared by using butylamine as a modifier, and its effectiveness in adsorbing Au(III) from environmental samples was investigated. The morphology and structure of NH2-ZIF-90 were analyzed via SEM, XRD, FT-IR, and XPS. Optimal adsorption occurred after 12 h of shaking in a pH = 5 aqueous solution with 2 mg mL−1NH2-ZIF-90. The adsorption kinetics conformed to a pseudo-second-order model, and the equilibrium data fit the Freundlich isotherm model well. Finally, NH2-ZIF-90 was successfully used in lake water and tap water samples for Au(III) adsorption, with recovery rates ranging from 81.0% to 93.3%. This study presents a novel approach for addressing Au(III) adsorption challenges.

Transition metal sulfides exhibit superior oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalytic performance due to their unique electronic structures and significant surface reconstructions. The electronic structure of transition metal sulfides can be effectively regulated via heteroatom doping, vacancy engineering, interface engineering, and structure engineering, and surface reconstructions can also be coordinated via coupling with electron-donating carbon materials. Herein, a facile cation regulation strategy is reported to boost the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of transition metal sulfides by pyrolyzing and sulfurizing the Fe2+- and Ni2+-modified ZIF-67 precursor (FeNi/ZIF-67). Crucially, Fe doping and Ni substitution in the final products are achieved by a simple room-temperature ion-exchange strategy, significantly boosting the OER activity. Meanwhile, conductive porous carbon from the organic ligand improves the mass transfer and active-site accessibility. As anticipated, Fe-doped CoS2 and NiCo2S4 embedded in N-doped porous carbon (NC) on carbon cloth (CoFe1Ni2S@NC/CC) demonstrate excellent hydrophilicity and OER activity, representing a very low overpotential of 175 mV at 20 mA cm–2, fast reaction kinetics (Rct = 0.51 Ω cm–2), and considerable electrocatalytic durability in 1.0 M KOH. This work offers a simple and low-cost cation regulation method for designing efficient cobalt-based sulfide hybrid electrocatalysts for OER, advancing their application in electrochemical water splitting.

The growth of biodiesel and oleochemical industries results in substantial surpluses of glycerol and consistently low prices. To absorb this surplus, we report a polymer-assisted in situ enzymes encapsulation strategy in which glycerol dehydrogenase (GDH) is encapsulated with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and cysteine (Cys) within ZIF-8 for glycerol conversion. The results showed that the encapsulated GDH/ZIF-8 composites presented stronger substrate affinities and higher catalytic efficiencies than free GDH as well as good stability. Among the free GDH and GDH/ZIF-8 composites, GDH/Cys/PVP@ZIF-8 presented the highest relative activity of 300.7 %. This could be attributed to the structural evolution of the encapsulated GDH and the formation of a more hydrophilic microenvironment around GDH during complexation with PVP. To increase cofactor utilization, a cofactor self-sufficient cascade system was constructed by encapsulating GDH and forming H 2 O NADH oxidase (Nox) with PVP and Cys within ZIF-8 for the conversion of glycerol to 1,3-dihydroxyacetone (DHA). At the optimal GDH:Nox molar ratio (4:1) and a substrate concentration of 100 mM, the DHA yield reached approximately 4.2 mM in GDH-Nox/Cys/PVP@ZIF-8, and the total turnover number of GDH-Nox/Cys/PVP@ZIF-8 reached 2787 at 0.05 µM NAD + , indicating its feasibility for large-scale DHA production. This work has thus provided a promising procedure of co-immobilizing enzymes via Cys/PVP-assisted in situ encapsulation within ZIF-8 for the development of economically viable multienzyme biocatalysts for glycerol conversion.

Bacterial adhesion and colonization can result in chronic non-healing wounds. Current hydrophilic wound dressings can release antibacterial agents into the wound exudate, but may result in overhydrated wounds, bacterial overgrowth, and even tissue maceration. Hydrophobic dressings are anti-fouling, though ineffective to encapsulate and release bactericidal agents. Combining the advantages of hydrophilic and hydrophobic dressings seems difficult, until the development of superwettability surfaces offers an opportunity for omniphobic dressings from intrinsic hydrophilic polymers. Herein, omniphobic porous hydrogel wound dressings loaded with a zinc imidazolate framework 8 (ZIF-8) are fabricated by a microfluidic-emulsion-templating method. The fabricated porous hydrogel membrane with its reentrant architecture is repellent to blood and body fluids, though intrinsically hydrophilic. This unique combination not only reduces the adhesion of harmful microbes, but also enables the encapsulation and release of antibacterial ingredients to wounded sites from hydrophilic polymer networks. As such, the omniphobic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)@hydrogel porous wound dressing can inhibit bacteria invasion and enable the controlled release of the bactericidal, anti-inflammatory, and nontoxic zinc ions. Furthermore, in vivo study of infected full-thickness skin defect models demonstrates that the dressing also accelerates wound closure by promoting angiogenesis and collagen deposition. Therefore, the omniphobic MOFs@hydrogel porous wound dressings are potentially useful for clinical application.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials, as electrodes for supercapacitors, have promising applications, but their conductivity and capacitance performance are critical limitations to their practical use. By constructing rational structures and incorporating various active materials, the conductivity and capacitance performance of MOF-derived materials can be significantly enhanced. This study presented the application of trimetallic selenide electrode materials V a -ZnSe/NiCoSe 2 in supercapacitors prepared through sequential Ni 2 + etching, selenization and NaBH 4 reduction of ZIF-8@ZIF-67 core-shell structure. The results exhibited that an appropriate number of Se vacancy defects effectively enhanced the specific capacitance and conductivity of the material, thereby improving the performance of supercapacitors. When NaBH 4 concentration was 1 M, the obtained V 1 -ZnSe/NiCoSe 2 electrode material presented excellent supercapacitor performance with a maximum specific capacitance (capacity) of 1563 F·g −1 (705.5 C . g −1 ) at a current density of 1 A·g −1 as well as high rate capability and long-term cycling stability. Additionally, the assembled V 1 -ZnSe/NiCoSe 2 //AC asymmetric supercapacitor delivered a high energy density of 41.9 Wh·kg −1 at a power density of 750 W·kg −1 , highlighting its great potential in the field of energy storage.

The prevalence of pathogenic bacterial infections with high morbidity and mortality poses a widespread challenge to the healthcare system. Therefore, it is imperative to develop nanoformulations capable of adaptively releasing antimicrobial factors and demonstrating multimodal synergistic antimicrobial activity. Herein, an NIR-activated multifunctional synergistic antimicrobial nanospray MXene/ZIF-90@ICG was prepared by incorporating ZIF-90@ICG nanoparticles onto MXene-NH2 nanosheets. MXene/ZIF-90@ICG can on-demand release the antimicrobial factors MXenes, ICG, and Zn2+ in response to variations in pH and ATP levels within the bacterial infection microenvironment. Under NIR radiation, the combination of MXenes, Zn2+, and ICG generated a significant amount of ROS and elevated heat, thereby enhancing the antimicrobial efficacy of PDT and PTT. Meanwhile, NIR excitation could accelerate the further release of ICG and Zn2+, realizing the multimodal synergistic antibacterial effect of PDT/PTT/Zn2+. Notably, introducing MXenes improved the dispersion of the synthesized antimicrobial nanoparticles in aqueous solution, rendering MXene/ZIF-90@ICG a candidate for application as a nanospray. Importantly, MXene/ZIF-90@ICG demonstrated antimicrobial activity and accelerated wound healing in the constructed in vivo subcutaneous Staphylococcus aureus infection model with NIR activation, maintaining a favorable biosafety level. Therefore, MXene/ZIF-90@ICG holds promise as an innovative nanospray for adaptive multimodal synergistic and efficient antibacterial applications with NIR activation.
