Gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) are widely used in the fluorescence detection of biomolecules in human serum due to their good fluorescence properties, low toxicity, and better biocompatibility. However, the weak fluorescence intensity of AuNCs limits the fluorescence detection of molecules within a wide concentration range. It is reported that coating AuNCs in ZIF-8 with adjustable pore size can effectively improve the fluorescence intensity of AuNCs and broaden the detection range. And the AuNCs wrapped in the gaps of ZIF-8 can prevent the fluorescence quenching caused by the aggregation of AuNCs. However, ZIF-8 has high crystallinity, poor dispersion, and easy deposition, which reduces the fluorescence stability of the detection system and affects the detection. Based on the above research, the highly hydrophilic polymer PEI was modified to the surface of ZIF-8, and a kind of nanocomposite material AuNCs/ChOx@ZIF-8/PEI was obtained by co-encapsulating AuNCs prepared with glutathione as a ligand and cholesterol oxidase (ChOx) into ZIF-8 modified with PEI. The composite material emits strong red light at 650 nm under the excitation of 395-nm light, and the system can sensitively detect cholesterol (Chol) in human serum. Compared with other materials, the PEI-modified composite has better solubility and stability, so the detection effect of Chol is better. Encapsulation of ChOx in the ZIF-8 shell can protect the enzyme and increase the local concentration of ChOx, thereby speeding up the reaction rate. Compared with free AuNCs/ChOx, the quenching rate of AuNCs/ChOx@ZIF-8/PEI system is doubled. Secondly, the addition of Fe 2+ to the detection process results in higher quenching rate and detection sensitivity. The system can detect Chol in the concentration range 0.1–2.4 μM, with a detection limit of 0.073 μM. The determination is a fast and sensitive strategy. In addition, the practicability of this assay in the detection of Chol in human serum has been verified. Due to its selectivity and sensitivity, it has potential application value in clinical diagnosis. Graphical abstract

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) nanoparticles have been regarded as one of the most important materials for high-performance applications in various fields, including environmental protection. Understanding the migration behavior of MOFs in the environmental media is critical for evaluating their opportunities and risks. In this study, the effect of pH, ionic strength, and NOM (fulvic acid and citric acid) were selected to investigate the transport and retention of ZIF-8 in saturated porous media . Experimental results showed that the released Zn 2+ of ZIF-8 was significantly increased by the high concentration of ionic strength and citric acid . There were new ZIFs phases detected in the transport process. ZIF-8 had weak mobility with a recovery of transport mass ≈ 2.3% in 1 mg/L citric acid at pH 6, while the maximum effluent recovery was 33.7% in the 100 mM NaCl at pH 8. Under all examined conditions, ZIF-8 was mainly retained at segments near the column inlet. Straining increased the retention of ZIF-8 in porous media. These results indicated that physicochemical factors and particle-specific properties played important roles in influencing ZIF-8 transportability, which would lead to the more complex evaluation of the environmental behaviors of MOFs.

In this study, heterostructured MOF/lamellar talc composites was successfully synthesized by in-situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles on acidified black talc (ABT) and introduced into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix to prepare high-performance mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) via spin coating and thermal cross-linking. The submicron-size natural lamellar black talc (BT) was first explored as stable carrier to synthesize laminated composite with continuous MOF phase. Owing to its silica-oxygen tetrahedral structure, the resultant laminated composite presented good compatibility with PDMS matrix, avoiding the formation of interfacial defect between polymer and nanoparticles. Moreover, well-dispersed and continuous ZIF-8 nanoparticles on lamellar nanosheets had preferential adsorption effect for alcohol, enhancing the selectivity of membranes. The coupling effects of graphene-like lamellar structure from talc and sequential transport channels from ZIF-8 attributed to greatly enhance permeation flux. Various techniques such as FESEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD and EDS were applied to investigate the morphology and structure of composites and membranes, and pervaporation experiments were applied to probe the behavior of polymer-based composite membranes . High performance defect-free ZIF-8@ABT/PDMS MMMs exhibited excellent total permeate flux of 1711 g m −2 h −1 with very competitive separation factor of 41 for low concentration n-butanol recovery.

Well dispersed nanocatalysts on porous substrate with macroscopic morphology are highly desired for the application of heterogeneous catalysis. Traditional fabrication process suffers from multiple steps for controlling the structure on nanocatalysts and matrix or both. Herein, we report a facile strategy for the synthesis of millimeter-sized hierarchical porous carbon beads (HPCBs) which containing well dispersed hollow-nano carbon boxes for peroxymonosulfate catalysis. Specially, the precursors of HPCBs were prepared by phase inversion method, which involving introduction of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) nanocubes into polyacrylonitrile (PAN) solutions followed by solidification of the mixture. After pyrolysis , nitrogen doped and hierarchical porous HPCBs with diameter of about 1.2 mm were obtained. The merits of our synthesis strategy lie in that synchronizes the hollow microstructure evolution with the shaping of ZIF-8 nanocubes into millimeter scale beads. Attribute to its special structure feature and the appropriate chemical composition, the resultant millimeter-sized HPCBs exhibit enhanced catalytic performance by activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for tetracycline degradation . The degradation efficiency of TC is up to 85.1% within 120 min, which is 18% higher than that of ZIF8-Solid/PAN carbon bead (SPCBs). In addition, the possible decomposition pathways, main reactive oxygen species , and reasonable enhanced mechanism for the HPCBs/PMS system are systematically investigated by quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). This work addresses the issue of easy aggregation and recycling of carbon materials in industrial productions and extends the prospects of carbon materials in engineering applications.

Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) have attracted wide attention, but the shuttle effect of polysulfide hinders their further practical application. Herein, we develop a new strategy to construct a Ketjen black@zeolite imidazole framework-8/polypropylene composite separator. Such a separator consists of Ketjen black (KB), zeolite imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) and polypropylene (PP) with a low coating load of 0.06 mg cm−2and is denoted as KB@ZIF-8/PP. KB@ZIF-8/PP can absorb polysulfides because of the Lewis acid-base interaction between ZIF-8 and polysulfides. This interaction can reduce the dissolution of polysulfides and suppress the shuttle effect, thereby enhancing the electrochemical performance of the battery. When tested at a current density of 0.1 C, an LSB with a KB@ZIF-8/PP separator exhibits low polarization and achieves a high initial capacity of 1235.6 mAh/g and a high capacity retention rate of 59.27% after 100 cycles. Keywords:lithium–sulfur battery;separator;shuttle effect;metal-organic framework;chemisorption

Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) crystals were obtained by an electric current-assisted synthesis method with stoichiometric Zn 2+ and 2-methylimidazole precursors. The resulting ZIF-8-CS2 shows enhanced CO 2 adsorption performance (31.2 cm 3 /g) with CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 9 at 273 K, while ZIF-8 prepared without electric current assistance shows CO 2 adsorption of 18.4 cm 3 /g and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 5. The increased CO 2 adsorption ability is ascribed to the high specific surface area and total pore volume of ZIF-8-CS2.

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) filled with dispersed nanoparticles may not favor all requirements for high separation performances due to the discontinuity in molecular permeation pathways. Here, we reported polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based MMMs by incorporating one-dimensional (1D) ZIF-8 tubes for the pervaporation (PV) recovery of ethyl acetate (EtOAc) from its diluted aqueous solution. The 1D ZIF-8 is a tubular structure formed by the ZIF-8 crystal particles inlaying each other, some windows between the ZIF-8 crystal particles are seamlessly connected, so that the cavities of the ZIF-8 are connected through the windows. The ZIF-8 tubes not merely possess microporous and molecular sieving properties, but also are inherently continuous in the integral morphology. The morphological continuity renders docking micropores along the tube body, which can act as efficient molecular permselective pathways for EtOAc molecules. Both the short and long-sized ZIF-8 tubes (STZIF-8 and LTZIF-8) played greater roles in facilitating PV performances than that of dispersed nanoparticles. Importantly, the most remarkable effect of the LTZIF-8 on separation performance was obtained since their micron-sized continuous structure, connected cavities and lumen, is more conductive to the separation process. The MMMs with 8% loading of the LTZIF-8 exhibited superior separation factor of 591.9 and EtOAc flux of 0.82 kg·m −2 ·h −1 for separating 1 wt% feed solution at 30 °C, which are 3.11 and 3.45 times of that of PDMS membrane, respectively. This study may give inspiration for developing high-performance MMMs by incorporating such morphologically continuous, microstructurally porous and molecular sieving fillers as permselective pathways for guest molecules.

Because anthrax spores are highly lethal to humans and animals as well as potential biological warfare agents, there is a great need for rapid, sensitive, and selective quantification of dipicolinic acid (DPA) as a biomarker for anthrax spores. Herein, we prepared a novel lanthanide-doped nanoprobe by coordination of Tb3+ ions with tannic acid (TA)-coated zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8 (ZIF-8) (ZIF-8@Tb–TA). The proposed assay was derived from the unsaturated coordination of Tb3+ ions. In the presence of DPA, Tb3+ ions could be sensitized to emit inherent luminescence due to the energy transfer after coordination with DPA. The results illustrated that ZIF-8@Tb–TA could be used as a sensitive nanoprobe for detecting DPA with a broad linear range (0 μM to 12.0 μM), and the limit of detection (LOD) was 12.3 nM. Moreover, the specific recognition ability of DPA by ZIF-8@Tb–TA was much better than that of other interfering molecules. This study proposed a new strategy to establish lanthanide-functionalized nanoprobes for highly selective and sensitive detection of DPA.

Combined NVP grafting and MMT@ZIF-8@TA modification raised pure water flux to 836.84 L·m⁻²·h⁻¹, ~6.8× of pristine PLA membrane. • The membrane retained over 95% rejection for four cationic/anionic dyes, realizing charge-selective adsorption (98% MeB removal, 99% AO removal). • PZ4 membrane removed 78.59% methylene blue under UV in 150 min; its rate constant (0.00995 min⁻¹) was ~110 times the blank group. • Superoxide (•O₂⁻) and hydroxyl (•OH) radicals were verified as the main active species during photocatalytic degradation. Rapid industrialization and urbanization have exacerbated water scarcity and pollution. Traditional polymer membranes are non‑renewable and non‑biodegradable. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biodegradable and renewable alternative, but its hydrophobicity and lack of functional groups restrict its direct application in water purification. To address these limitations, we grafted N‑vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) onto PLA chains via free‑radical polymerization to obtain PLA‑g‑PVP with enhanced hydrophilicity. Zeolitic imidazolate framework‑8 (ZIF‑8) was grown in situ on montmorillonite (MMT) and coated with tannic acid (TA) to obtain MMT@ZIF‑8@TA nanoparticles, which synergistically improve membrane porosity, adsorption capacity, and photocatalytic activity. A series of PLA‑g‑PVP/MMT@ZIF‑8@TA (PZ) membranes were fabricated by non‑solvent induced phase separation. The PZ4 membrane exhibited a pure water flux of 836.84 L·m⁻²·h⁻¹ , approximately 6.8 times that of pristine PLA, and achieved over 95% rejection for four representative dyes, including both cationic (auramine O, methylene blue) and anionic (congo red, methyl blue) dyes. After five cycles, the flux recovery rate remained 81.03% with dye rejection > 90%, showing excellent reusability. The PZ membranes also demonstrated adsorption and photocatalytic activity. The PZ4 membrane degraded 78.59% of methylene blue within 150 min under UV irradiation, attributed to efficient separation of photogenerated electron‑hole pairs and synergistic oxidation by hydroxyl (·OH) and superoxide (·O 2 ⁻) radicals, leading to dye mineralization. This eco‑friendly membrane integrates high separation efficiency, which shows great potential for the purification of dye-containing wastewater, and sheds light on the design of multifunctional composite filtration membranes. Semiconductor-based photocatalytic materials have been widely used in photoreduction uranium systems. However, semiconductor-based materials still have some problems such as difficult recovery, few adsorption sites, poor stability, and large bandgap width. Based on this, we constructed 3D porous konjac glucomannan-derived carbon-encapsulated carbon-doped ZnO carbon aerogels (KC@C-ZnO-X) for U(VI) adsorption-photoreduction based on the gelling properties of Konjac glucomannan (KGM) and the unique structure of ZIF-8. The KC@C-ZnO-1.5 achieved the U(VI) removal rate of 93.5 % in 200 mg/L U(VI) solution and greatly weakened the photocorrosion of ZnO. And then the KC@C-ZnO-1.5 continued to maintain an outstanding U(VI) removal rate of 92.9 % after five cycles. Further characterization tests found that the role of 3D KGM-derived carbon aerogel (KC) encapsulation improves the stability of ZnO and carbon doping reduces the band gap width of ZnO. The mechanistic study showed that KC as the “skeleton” encapsulating C-ZnO not only enabled the catalyst to be recycled but also enhanced the photostability of ZnO. The synergistic effect of the C-ZnO and KC promoted photogenerated charge separation and facilitated the generation of ·O 2 − , leading to the further formation of the stable (UO 3 ·NH 3 ·H 2 O) crystalline phase.

Polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based electrolytes are considered to be promising for all-solid-state battery, benefiting from the superior flexibility, excellent processability and well compatibility. However, the low ionic conductivity at room temperature and poor stability under high voltage limit their further application. Herein, ZIF-8@PVDF-HFP/PEO (PPZ) solid electrolyte was successfully prepared by facial electrospinning process. On one side, the cooperation of PVDF-HFP and ZIF-8 was benefit to decrease the crystallization degree of PEO and thus promoted the Li + transfer. Moreover, the in-situ formed LiF layer derived from the decomposition of PVDF-HFP protected the electrolyte from contacting directly with the electrode, contributing to a stable electrode/electrolyte interface. The results demonstrated that the electrochemical stability and mechanical property of PPZ electrolyte were significantly improved when compared to the bare PEO electrolyte. The tensile strength increased from 0.5 to 6.7 MPa and the Li + transference number enlarged from 0.17 to 0.48. More importantly, the assembled LCO(LiCoO 2 )||PPZ||Li all-solid-state battery delivered a discharge specific capacity of 144.7 mAh g -1 at 0.2 C, nearly 1.6 times than that of the LCO||PEO||Li (90.7 mAh g -1 ). Besides that, the retention maintained at 86.3 % even after 200 cycles, manifesting a long-term cycling stability. This work provides a new idea for the practical application of PEO under high voltage.

Carbonic anhydrase mimics have recently emerged as promising alternative catalysts for industrial CO 2 capture and utilization. Up to now, many strategies have been developed to design and prepare nanostructures with excellent carbonic anhydrase-like catalytic activity. Herein, two kinds of polyphenol molecules (tannic acid (TA) and gallic acid (GA)) were used to etch amino acid (valine (Val) and leucine (Leu)) modified ZIF-8 (AA-ZIF-8) for fabricating carbonic anhydrase mimics. The TA-treated AA-ZIF-8 (Val-ZIF-8/TA and Leu-ZIF-8/TA) possess hollow nanostructure while the GA-treated AA-ZIF-8 (Val-ZIF-8/GA and Leu-ZIF-8/GA) are decomposed into smaller nanoparticles . Zn-polyphenol coordination interaction and protons released by polyphenols are considered to be the driving force for the etching of AA-ZIF-8. Using hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl acetate (p-NPA) as the model reaction, the carbonic anhydrase-like activity of AA-ZIF-8/polyphenol nanoparticles were evaluated and the results indicated their excellent catalytic activity. Moreover, after using AA-ZIF-8/polyphenol as catalysts, the CO 2 hydration efficiency could also be enhanced. This work provides a new approach for developing carbonic anhydrase mimics, which could help for designing of materials for industrial CO 2 capture.
