Controlled-release herbicide spheres: co-crystallization of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid with l-menthol via green oiling-out process for low leaching and high activity

Xuzhao Zhang,Lan Fang,Haiting Wang,Yuntian Xiao,Dongyue Wang,Zongying Hao,Junbo Gong

Background Excessive pesticide soil leaching (>99% loss) poses a critical environmental challenge. This study aimed to develop carrier free, slow release herbicide particles by integrating crystal engineering and spherical particle technology. Results A 2,4 dichlorophenoxyacetic acid–l menthol cocrystal was synthesized solvent free into spherical particles ( D 50 = 100–600 μm). These cocrystal particles reduced solubility by 21.6%, decreased dissolution rate by >50%, and reduced soil leaching by up to 93%, eliminating the need for carriers and avoiding secondary pollution. The release mechanism was governed by a multiscale diffusion limited process: enhanced hydrogen bonding networks elevated lattice energy, while solution mediated recrystallization transformed nanofibrous microstructures into diffusion restricting lamellar domains. Kinetic modeling indicated a transition from Fickian to hindered diffusion. Biological validation demonstrated superior weed control efficacy against chicory and shepherd's purse. Conclusion This integrated approach establishes a sustainable paradigm for precision agrochemical delivery by significantly reducing environmental leaching while maintaining high herbicidal activity. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry.

Synergistic role of quercetin in sodium alginate/κ-carrageenan hydrogel microspheres for the protection and controlled release of the novel antimicrobial peptide hz-01

Zhe Liu,Qingyan Pan,Xifeng Zuo,Xuetuan Wei,Ailing Guo

Recombinant protein enabled active preparation of novel peptide hz-01. • Quercetin was first introduced into SA/κ-Car microspheres for peptide loading. • Quercetin enhanced peptide encapsulation, gastric protection, and intestinal controlled release. To address the poor stability and high susceptibility to degradation of antimicrobial peptides, a pH-responsive hydrogel microsphere system was developed based on sodium alginate (SA) and κ-carrageenan (Car), with quercetin (Que) for intestinal delivery of chemically synthesized free hz-01 peptide. The optimized formulation containing 0.45% Car exhibited the highest encapsulation efficiency (77%), corresponding to an absolute increase of 13 percentage points compared with the system without Que. The microspheres remained stable under simulated gastric conditions but enabled controlled intestinal release, with release kinetics fitting the Korsmeyer-Peppas model (R 2  = 0.995), while significantly preserving antimicrobial activity during digestion. Molecular dynamics simulations suggested that hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, and weak hydrophobic associations may contribute to the local stabilization of hz-01 within the SA/Car/Que. matrix. This work provides a food-grade polyphenol-assisted encapsulation strategy in which Que. functions as an auxiliary structural mediator to improve peptide encapsulation, gastric protection, and intestinal-stage release. Photothermal-Controlled Release of IL-4 in IL-4/PDA-Immobilized Black Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) Nanotubes Surface to Enhance Osseointegration: An In Vivo Study

Bo Chen,Yu Liang,Yunjia Song,Yunkai Liang,Jian Jiao,Hong Bai,Ying Li

Host immune response has gradually been accepted as a critical factor in achieving successful implant osseointegration. The aim of this study is to create a favorable immune microenvironment by the dominant release of IL-4 during the initial few days after implant insertion to mitigate early inflammatory reactions and facilitate osseointegration. Herein, the B-TNT/PDA/IL-4 substrate was established by immobilizing an interleukin-4 (IL-4)/polydopamine (PDA) coating on a black TiO2nanotube (B-TNT) surface, achieving on-demand IL-4 release under near infrared (NIR) irradiation. Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analyses based on high-throughput DNA microarray data revealed that IL-4 addition inhibited osteoclast differentiation and function. Animal experiment results suggested that the B-TNT/PDA/IL-4+Laser substrate induced the least inflammatory, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase, inducible nitric oxide synthase and the most CD163 positive cells, compared to the Ti group at 7 days post-implantation. In addition, 28 days post-implantation, micro-computed tomography results showed the highest bone volume/total volume, trabecular thickness, trabecular number and the lowest trabecular separation, while Hematoxylin-eosin and Masson-trichrome staining revealed the largest amount of new bone formation for the B-TNT/PDA/IL-4+Laser group. This study revealed the osteoimmunoregulatory function of the novel B-TNT/PDA/IL-4 surface by photothermal release of IL-4 at an early period post-implantation, thus paving a new way for dental implant surface modification. Keywords:photothermal;controlled release;IL-4;PDA;TiO2nanotubes;osseointegration;near-infrared laser;titanium

Controlled-release granules for the delivery of pymetrozine to roots of transplanted rice seedlings with decreased phytotoxicity and enhanced control efficacy against paddy planthoppers

Fengjiao Hao,Xiaohui Liu,Huizhu Yuan,Xiaojing Yan,Daibin Yang

BACKGROUND Seedling transplanting is widely used in rice cultivation. Systemic insecticides can be delivered to seedling roots by application through rice seedling boxes before transplanting. The most challenging aspect is to provide long-term control of rice pests and overcome transplanting shock. Precise control of the release rate of insecticide can meet these requirements. Pymetrozine is a promising insecticide used for the control of rice planthoppers resistant to neonicotinoid insecticides. RESULTS In this study, four controlled-release granular formulations of pymetrozine were prepared based on a mixture of cost-effective and biodegradable kaolin and xanthan gum or a mixture of calcined kaolin and xanthan gum. Fluorescence images showed that different 3D networks were formed in the four granular formulations. The four granular formulations showed different water uptake rates and release rates of pymetrozine in water. Pymetrozine release rate was positively correlated with the water uptake capacity, rather than the water uptake rate of granules. Diffusion was the dominant mechanism for the release of pymetrozine from granules. Pymetrozine was found to reduce the survival of transplanted rice seedlings suffering from transplanting shock. Incorporating pymetrozine in controlled-release granules alleviated this phytotoxicity. The survival rate of rice seedlings in granular pymetrozine treatments ranged 68.8–85.0%, whereas the survival rate was <50% for powdered pymetrozine treatments. Additionally, four prepared granule formulations had a significant control effect on rice planthopper with efficacies ranging from 76.7% to 98.0% 40 days after seedling box treatment. CONCLUSIONS The granule with an intermediate release rate of pymetrozine was shown to be more suitable for seedling box treatment than field application and traditional liquid spraying for the long-term control of paddy planthoppers. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Controlled release of herbicides through glyphosate intercalated layered double hydroxides and enhancement of anti-scouring ability via poly-l-aspartic acid and chitosan modification

Fanping Kong,Qian Zhang,Yuan Xie,Jiyue Ding,Hui Zhao,Zihan Zhang,Zequn Ma,Hailin Cong,Zilin Meng

Nanocarrier preparations could effectively improve the utilization rate of pesticides, and reduce pesticide loss. In this study, glyphosate (GLY)-loaded Mg Al layered double hydroxide (GLY@LDH) was synthesized via an in-situ method. Subsequently, GLY@LDH composite samples were prepared using a layer-by-layer self-assembly approach and modified with poly-L-aspartic acid (PASP) and chitosan (CS). XRD, FT-IR, SEM, and Zeta potential characterization confirmed that GLY was successfully loaded in the interlayer of LDHs and PASP/CS were successfully encapsulated on the surface of the composite sample. The release effect in different ionic solutions and soils was studied and analyzed. The release behavior conforms to the Ritger-Peppas kinetic model, and the release mechanism was ion exchange, which was further explored by means of XRD, SEM, and molecular simulation. The results of the anti-scouring experiment and contact angle measurement indicated that the layered self-assembly material enhanced the washing resistance of the material. The practical application effect of the sample was verified through a pot experiment. This study provides new insights into the simple preparation of pesticide-controlled release formulations that reduce leaching losses.

Highly swellable, cytocompatible and biodegradeable guar gum-based hydrogel system for controlled release of bioactive components of liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.): Synthesis and evaluation

Abid Naeem,Chengqun Yu,Xiaoli Wang

Glycyrrhiza glabra Linn (liquorice) has been widely used for therapeutic purposes to treat digestive disorders, immunomodulatory disorders, inflammatory disorders, diabetes, viral infections, and cancer. Liquorice contains a wide variety of bioactive compounds, including glycyrrhizin, flavonoids, and terpenoids. Several factors compromise their therapeutic efficacy, such as poor pharmacokinetic profiles and physicochemical properties. Therefore, to improve its overall effectiveness, liquorice solid dispersion (LSD) was incorporated into biopolymer-based guar gum-grafted-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (Guar gum- g -AMPS) hydrogels designed for controlled delivery via the oral route and characterized. The qualitative analysis of LSD revealed 51 compounds. Hydrogel structural properties were assessed for their effect on swelling and release. The highest swelling ratio (6413 %) and drug release (84.12 %) occurred at pH 1.2 compared to pH 7.4 (swelling ratio of 2721 % and drug release of 79.36 %) in 48 h. The hydrogels exhibited high porosity (84.23 %) and biodegradation (9.30 % in 7 days). In vitro hemolysis tests have demonstrated the compatibility of the hydrogel with blood. CCK-8 assay confirmed the biocompatibility of the synthesized hydrogel using osteoblasts and RIN-m5f cells. LSD exhibited good anti-inflammatory activity when loaded into hydrogels after being subjected to protein denaturation experiments. Moreover, LSD-loaded hydrogels have good antioxidant and antibacterial properties.

The β-glucan nanotube carrier achieves detoxification and efficacy enhancement of celastrol in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma therapy by increasing targeted controlled release and macrophage polarization

Zihan He,Zhangwei Yang,Mingjie Hu,Kexing Wang,Zhenpeng Qiu,Qi Wang,Xinyan Chen,Cong Chang,Junjie Hu,Yan Meng

Celastrol (Cel) is a monomer from a famous traditional Chinese medicine named Tripterygium wilfordii Hook. f . Cel has shown great potential in treating intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) but still faces problems, including poor water solubility, high toxicity, and lack of targeting ability. Thus, the present work constructed a drug-delivery system using black fungus  polysaccharide self-assembled -nanotubes (BFP). Cel-loaded nanotubes (BFP-Cel) were confirmed to have a high loading content of Cel (38 %), liver targeting, and enzyme-controlled release abilities. Moreover, BFP carriers could significantly increase the uptake efficiency of Cel by tumor cells. In vivo experiments showed that BFP-Cel could effectively inhibit tumor growth and reduce the physiological toxicity of Cel. Furthermore, BFP, as a carrier, could regulate the immune microenvironment in the liver through the activation of macrophages and play an immunomodulatory role. In summary, the BFP nanotube carrier could achieve detoxification and efficacy enhancement of Cel in treating ICC by increasing the targetability, controlled release ability, cell-uptake effect, and regulation of the immune microenvironment.

Tianhao Ying,Chenghong Jiang,Sadia Munir,Ru Liu,Tao Yin,Juan You,Jianhua Rong,Shanbai Xiong,Yang Hu

This work aimed to synthesize oregano essential oil/β-cyclodextrin microcapsules (OEO/β-CDs) and then prepare gelatin-based controlled-release antibacterial films with different OEO/β-CDs contents (0%–2%) for chilling preservation of grass carp fillets. The results of FTIR , XRD, DSC and accelerated release ratio showed that OEO was successfully encapsulated in OEO/β-CDs and its thermal stability was effectively improved. Moreover, at 2% of addition amount of OEO/β-CDs, the tensile strength of the films increased from 14.43 MPa to 18.72 MPa. In addition, the films showed significant antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas (61.52%), Aeromonas (62.87%), and Shewanella putrefaciens (66.67%). Preservation experiments showed that the films effectively prevented the increase of TVB-N, and TBA value of the refrigerated fillets and significantly suppressed the growth of spoilage organisms , thus extending the shelf life by 2–3 days. Therefore, the synthesized film has promising potential as an active packaging material for the preservation of grass carp.

Dual-mode droplet rolling strategy: Mimicking Earth's rotation and revolution for dual-cycle synergy in the efficient capture and controlled release of trace targets

Qian Wang,Kexin Liu,Kunming Xing,Yuyan Li,Yumin Liu,Guangyao Tan,Yingnan Sun,Shusheng Zhang

Current microchips functionalized with antibodies or aptamers primarily enhance the capture and detection efficiency of single targets in microfluidics by refining microchannel designs or developing functional enhancement materials. However, strategies to extend the interaction path for efficiency optimization remain underexplored, as they may cause elevated hydraulic pressure and fluid shear forces within the microchannels, and the potential for path extension is inherently limited. This study introduces a novel dual-mode droplet rolling strategy, mimicking Earth's rotation and revolution, which employs a closed-loop patterned superwetting chip to achieve efficient capture of trace biological targets in gravity-driven droplets. Specifically, the external cyclic motion in the "revolution" mode greatly extends the interaction path between the droplet-contained targets and the active interface. Meanwhile, the internal cyclic vortex flow in the "rotation" mode markedly increases the contact frequency between droplet-contained targets and the active substrate. Consequently, the dual-cycle synergistic amplification significantly enhances the effective contact opportunities between the targets and the functionalized closed-loop track, thereby markedly improving target capture efficiency. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate the specific and efficient capture of both micron-sized polystyrene microspheres (6 μm and 15 μm) and nanoscale AuNPs (50 nm) through multilayer modification of the superslippery track, highlighting the platform's versatility for targets of varying sizes. We achieved 91.3% capture efficiency for circulating tumor cells (MCF-7 cells, ~20 μm), underscoring the chip's high efficiency in specific target capture. Furthermore, we showcase the strategy's applicability throughout the entire workflow, encompassing efficient capture, controlled release, immediate recovery, and downstream cultivation using pathogenic bacteria (E. coli, ~1 μm). This strategy holds significant promise for detecting tumor markers and pathogens in body fluid samples, offering an innovative approach to capture-based diagnostics.

Preparation and Characterization of Dual-Network Multifunctional Hydrogels Based on Peach Gum Polysaccharides: Ultrafast Self-Healing Ability, Favorable Mechanical Tunability, and Controlled Release Properties

Boyu Liu,Yumeng Han,Zhenqing Zhang,Jianing Hao,Hao Wan,Yongguo Jin,Qi Xu

Natural hydrogels have attracted considerable attention due to advantages of moisturizing, biocompatibility, and plasticity. In this study, a dual-network oxidized peach gum polysaccharide–carboxymethyl chitosan (OPGC) hydrogels with ultrafast self-healing ability was constructed by self-assembly using oxidized peach gum polysaccharide (OPGP) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS). After complete fracture, OPGC hydrogels rapidly self-healed within 30 s due to the dual-network structure formed by the hydrogen bonds between the OPGP molecules and the Schiff base bonds between them and the CMCS. Meanwhile, the hydrogels exhibited good injectability and biocompatibility. With the increase of CMCS from 0.5 wt% to 2.5 wt%, the gel formation time of OPGC hydrogels was drastically shortened from 12 min to 3 min, while the strength and water-holding capacity were enhanced. Furthermore, experimental in vitro and in vivo animal studies demonstrated excellent drug loading capacity of OPGC hydrogels, and the release rate of bactericide could be controlled by adjusting the content of CMCS. The OPGC hydrogels have outstanding properties for potential applications in the health and medical fields.

Siloxane and Nano-SiO2 Dual-Modified Bio-Polymer Coatings Based on Recyclable Spent Mushroom Substrate: Excellent Performance, Controlled-Release Mechanism, and Effect on Plant Growth

Jianrong Zhao,Yuanhao Zhang,Fuxin Liu,Songling Chen,Hongbao Wu,Ruilin Huang

Spent mushroom substrate (SMS)-derived bio-based polyurethane coatings typically exhibit poor hydrophobicity and short nutrient release durations, limiting their ability to satisfy long-term crop requirements. This study developed improved controlled-release urea by preparing water-repellent and compact bio-polymer coatings from recyclable SMS using non-toxic siloxane and nano-SiO2modifiers through simple processes. The dual modification markedly reduced water absorption (from 6.60% to 4.43%) and porosity (from 6.32% to 3.92%), creating a dense coating with lotus-leaf-like nanoscale surface protrusions and fewer intermembrane pores. As a result, the nitrogen (N) release period of the dual-modified bio-polymer-polyurethane-coated urea (SBPCU) with a 7% coating thickness was extended from 23 days to 42 days. Phytotoxicity assessments confirmed the excellent biosafety of the bio-polymer coating, revealing no adverse effects on maize growth and even promotional effects at low concentrations. This approach offers a sustainable, eco-friendly, and scalable strategy for producing bio-polymer-coated urea from agricultural waste, serving as a viable alternative to petrochemical coatings while improving nutrient use efficiency and biosafety.

A pH-responsive nano-carrier with mesoporous silica nanoparticles cores and poly(acrylic acid) shell-layers: Fabrication, characterization and properties for controlled release of salidroside

Hailong Peng,Ruichen Dong,Shenqi Wang,Zhong Zhang,Mei Luo,Chunqing Bai,Qiang Zhao,Jinhua Li,Lingxin Chen,Hua Xiong

A novel pH-responsive nano-carrier MSNs–PAA, possessing mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) cores and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) shell-layers, was developed for controlled release of salidroside . The vinyl double bonds modified MSNs were synthesized by using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as templates, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as silicon source, and 3-(trimethoxylsilyl) propyl methacrylate (MPS) as surface modification functionalities. The pH-responsive layers of PAA were grafted onto the vinyl double bonds of the MSNs via precipitation polymerization, producing the MSNs–PAA with a hollow cubic core and mesoporous shell with penetrating pore channels. The characteristic results also showed that PAA was successfully grafted onto the surface of the MSNs. The MSNs–PAA was investigated as carriers for loading and regulating the release of salidroside in different pH solutions for the first time. The results demonstrated that the PAA layers on the surface of MSNs–PAA exhibited opened and closed states at different pH values, and thus could regulate the uptake and release of salidroside. The application of such pH-responsive nano-carrier might offer a potential platform for controlled delivery and increasing the bioavailability of drugs.
