Bacteriorhodopsin is a biological material with excellent photosensitivity properties. It can directly convert optical signals into electrical signals and is widely used in various biosensors. Here, we present a bR-based wearable pH biometer that can be used to monitor wound infection. The mechanism of the pH-sensitive effect of the bR electrode is explained, which generates a transient photovoltage under light irradiation and a negative photovoltage when the lamp is turned off. Since the photoelectric signal of bR is affected by different pH values, the photovoltage is changed by adjusting the pH value. The ratio (Vn/Vp) of negative photovoltage (Vn) to positive photovoltage (Vp) has a good linear relationship (R2 = 0.9911) in the pH range of 4.0–10.0. In vitro experiments using rats as a model confirmed that this wearable pH biometer can monitor pH changes that occur in wound infection.

This study introduces a novel design for pH-sensitive bilayer Janus hydrogels with bidirectional bending capabilities, achieved through the layer-by-layer polymerization of two distinct hydrogel layers. The upper layer, composed of P(HEMA -co- 4VP), swells in acidic environments due to the protonation of pyridine groups, inducing bending toward one side. Conversely, the lower layer, made of P(HEMA -co- AA), expands in alkaline conditions by deprotonation, causing bending toward the opposite direction. The bilayer hydrogel demonstrates significant shape deformations, influenced by variations in layer thickness and pH conditions. Detailed analyses of swelling behaviors, compressive toughness, and rheological properties reveal that the unique composition ensures distinct and tunable mechanical responses. Furthermore, hydrogels fabricated into complex geometries, such as flower- and starfish-shaped structures, showcase practical applications in soft robotics and biomimetic devices. The versatility of the design is further confirmed by substituting P(HEMA -co- 4VP) with P(HEMA -co- DMAEMA), which maintained the bidirectional bending responses under both acidic and alkaline conditions. This research expands the theoretical understanding of stimulus-responsive hydrogels and offers an innovative platform for designing intelligent actuators adaptable to diverse and dynamic environments.

Light-driven micro/nanomotors have made enormous progress in various practical applications owing to their excellent controllability and programmability. However, it is still far from real intellectualization. Herein we demonstrate the successful fabrication of hollow cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) micromotors with autonomous phototaxis reversal behavior by in-situ sensing the local pH change of surrounding environment without altering the lighting direction. The fabricated motors exhibit excellent and controllable propulsion under low-strength visible light illumination (1100 LUX) due to faster charge separation between different facets of the crosslinked polyhedral Cu 2 O microstructures. Intriguingly, our Cu 2 O micromotors are possible to respond smartly to the local pH gradient and reverse from negative to positive phototaxis, therefore the motors are capable of evacuating automatically after mission. We envision that such adaptive micromotor with great intellectualization via responding autonomously to the local stimuli shows great promise in various applications especially biomedical scenarios.

Localized and interface pH values are important parameters for studying the corrosion progress and complex interface reactions. Although commercial glass pH sensors have been widely used to measure solution pH value due to their advantages of long stability and high sensitivity, they were unable to determine the interface and microregion pH value for their difficulty in miniaturization. In this work, an all-solid-state pH micro-sensor with strong adhesion strength was in-situ fabricated on diameter 15 μm tungsten ultramicroelectrode (UME) using constant current anodizing. The pH micro-sensor showed good linear response (R 2 = 0.999), excellent sensitivity (with a slope of −53.8 mV/pH), quick response (<0.1 s), long lifetime (>44 days) and great anti-interference ability to most of the ions in marine (selectivity coefficients pK ij > 7), such as SO 4 2− , Cl − , NO 3 − , K + , Mg 2+ and Fe 2+ . Then, the pH micro-sensor, combined with the potentiometric mode of SECM, was further employed to explore the localized pH value distribution during the galvanic corrosion of Fe-Cu couple in 0.1 M NaCl solution. To further verify the anti-interference ability of pH micro-sensor, potentiometric SECM experiment was also conducted in artificial seawater. Results showed that both acidic sites and alkalizing sites appeared on the Fe surface, while homogeneous alkalization took place overall Cu surface. This was consistent with the SVET results that anodic and cathodic areas existed simultaneously on Fe surface. Thus, it could be concluded that local corrosion occurred on Fe surface and only part of the Fe surface acted as the anodic even under galvanic effect. However, Cu acted as cathode with the homogeneously distributing cathodic current on the whole surface during the galvanic corrosion.

The pH test is particularly important in many fields, such as chemical production and medical diagnosis. However, the most commonly used pH test strips for pH detection have disadvantages such as low strength , poor stability, only qualitative measurement and only a single-color response. Therefore, a dual-mode pH sensor prepared by a phase conversion method with Poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) as the substrate and carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as probes was developed. This sensor is capable of producing dual changes in fluorescence color and fluorescence intensity over the full range of pH. The -COOH and -NH 2 groups in CQDs can interact with the amide group in PMIA to make the sensor highly stable. Three correlations were established based on the fluorescence color and fluorescence intensity at different pH, which compensated the shortage of traditional pH test paper that could not be quantitatively detected. More importantly, the sensor can be used for pH detection in a wide range of water samples, and both colorimetric and fluorescence detection modes exhibit extremely high fit coefficients (R 2 > 0.99) and short response times (∼5 s). Therefore, the dual-mode pH sensor provides an important solution for the development of pH detection devices with high stability and accuracy.

Nanoencapsulation can effectively protect phase change material (PCM) from the ambient. Sugar alcohols have great potential for thermal energy storage. However, base or acid used in the most popular encapsulation methods may damage the PCM core. In this study, binary sugar alcohols of D-mannitol (DM) and inositol (IN) were first nanoencapsulated at neutral pH conditions. Nanocapsules with silica as the shell and different DM/IN ratios of 4.0:1, 4.6:1 and 5.5:1 were synthesized at different precursor ratios of tetraethoxysilane to triethoxysilane of 8:6, 9:5, and 10:4. The nanoencapsulation was demonstrated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The phase change characteristics, thermal energy storage-release performance and thermal stability of the nanocapsules were studied by differential scanning calorimeter, thermal energy storage-release experiments, SEM, thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA) and thermal cycling tests. Results show that the phase change characteristics and thermal energy storage-release performance of the nanocapsules varied with the DM/IN mixing ratio and ratios of precursors. The DM/IN-4.6:1-9:5@SiO 2 nanocapsules exhibited the best phase change characteristics and thermal energy storage-release performance. Thermal stability of the nanocapsules was improved compared to pure binary sugar alcohols.

Oral insulin delivery represents a compelling alternative to conventional injections because of its enhanced patient compliance and administration convenience. However, this approach faces substantial challenges stemming from physiological barriers that include the gastrointestinal environment, mucus layer obstruction, and poor intestinal absorption. To overcome these limitations, we designed glycosylated proanthocyanidin (PC) nanoparticles using a sacrificial ZIF-8 template for insulin encapsulation. The resulting nanoparticles achieved high loading efficiency and combined two critical functions: gastric protection and enhanced intestinal absorption. Specifically, the nanoparticles preserved insulin stability under acidic gastric conditions and released their payload in response to physiological pH. Furthermore, surface glucose modifications significantly improved the cellular uptake through specific interactions with glucose transporters. When evaluated in a type 1 diabetic mouse model, this Ins@PC@PEG-Glu nanoparticle system showed markedly better therapeutic effects with 7.9% bioavailability, demonstrating its strong potential as an oral insulin delivery platform.

The development of tunable metamaterials has attracted increasing attention. However, achieving real-time modulation of the optical properties remains a significant challenge. Stimuli-responsive polymers with their rapid response characteristics offer new opportunities for applications in optical modulation and sensing. Here, we propose a novel approach for controlling interparticle spacing and pH sensing by constructing a plasmonic metasurface via self-assembly of nanoparticles (NPs) at the liquid–liquid interface. Variations in the surface plasmon resonance peak position and reflectance in the reflection spectrum indicate changes in the interparticle spacing within the metasurface. Furthermore, pH variations in the aqueous phase modulate the intensity of the Raman characteristic peaks in surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectra. We demonstrate that AuNPs modified with poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) exhibit reversible pH-responsive behavior. The pH-induced coupling and decoupling of plasmonic modes enable tunable interparticle distances from 14 to 2.2 nm and linear pH sensing over a broad range of pH 3 to 11. The sensing performance has also been validated in practical samples.

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) have been widely studied as treatment alternatives to anbiotics to avoid the occurrence of bacterial resistance because of their negligible bacterial resistance and high antibacterial efficiencies. Herein, we developed an infection microenvironment-responsive nanogel (STF) to successfully achieve a PTT synergized CDT for bacterial infection. Through a one-step/pot method, STF nanotherapeutics consisting of Fe3+/sodium alginate (SA) based nanogels and Fe3+/tannic acid (TA) based metal–phenolic networks (MPNs) were conveniently prepared by the coordination-triggered simultaneous self-assembly of SA, TA, and Fe3+ ions. Afterward, their photothermal and catalytic performances were intensively investigated. Moreover, the sterilization effect of the STF nanogel was evaluated through in vitro and in vivo bactericidal assays. The STF nanogel exhibited a photothermal enhanced peroxidase-like activity because of the good photothermal effect of MPNs. In addition, its Fenton activity was further accelerated by an extra amount of Fe2+ derived from the degradation of Fe3+-chelating agents (SA) and reduction of TA. Together, the STF nanogel possessed a photothermal/Fe2+ dual-augmented catalytic property. In vitro and in vivo antibacterial assays proved its satisfactory bactericidal efficiency owing to PTT/Fe2+ dual-enhanced CDT. Our research findings suggested that the developed intelligent bactericidal nanogel has great potential to be used as an antibiotic alternative to avoid bacterial resistance in future clinical treatments.

Stimuli-responsive surfaces have the potentials to solve the trade-off between biocompatibility and antibacterial performance by switching specific function on-demand, which makes them a promising option for developing biocompatible antibacterial surfaces. In this study, a pH-responsive antibacterial surface was created by grafting polycationic brushes and forming an acid-sensitive zwitterionic structure through a spontaneous amino-yne click reaction. Under physiological conditions, the zwitterionic structure provided the surface with good biocompatibility, as confirmed by lower hemolysis and cytotoxicity, as well as low adhesion and activation of platelets. When bacteria begin to colonize on the biomaterial surface, the decrease in local pH can break the acid-sensitive enamine bond and expose the polycations, activating the bactericidal activity. The good and on demand bactericidal activity was verified by the stimulated and authentic bacterial infection conditions. This study highlights the potential of stimuli-responsive zwitterionic surfaces as a valuable option for infection-resistant medical devices .

Hydrogels have attracted widespread attention in anticounterfeiting due to their unique physical/chemical properties and designability. However, hydrogels’ poor mechanical properties and sluggish response to chemical stimuli pose challenges for their wide application. A fluorescent tough organohydrogel capable of freeform writing of information is reported in this work. By incorporation of the fluorescent monomer 7-methylacryloxy-4-methylcoumarin into the polyacrylamide network in a covalently cross-linked manner while intertwining with the carboxymethyl cellulose sodium network, a fluorescent tough organohydrogel with a dual-network structure is prepared. The organohydrogel shows acid–base-mediated adjustable fluorescence through the transformation of fluorescent monomers. Ion printing and electrical stimulation design achieved free information storage and encryption. In addition, the prepared organohydrogel has good antifreezing properties and can be encrypted and decrypted at subzero temperatures. The encrypted information in the organohydrogel can be read only after UV-light irradiation. These patterned fluorescent organohydrogels should find applications in protected message displays for improved information security.
