Two-component systems (TCSs) sensing and responding to various stimuli outside and inside cells are valuable resources for developing biosensors with synthetic biology applications. However, the use of TCS-based biosensors suffers from a limited effector spectrum, hypersensitivity, low dynamic range, and unwanted signal crosstalk. Here, we developed a tailor-made Escherichia coli whole-cell γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) biosensor by engineering a chimeric GABA chemoreceptor PctC and TCS. By testing different TCSs, the chimeric PctC/PhoQ showed the response to GABA. Chimera-directed evolution and introduction of the insulated chimeric pair PctC/PhoQ*PhoP* produced biosensors with up to 3.50-fold dynamic range and good orthogonality. To further enhance the dynamic range and lower the basal leakage, three strategies, engineering of PhoP DNA binding sites, fine-tuning reporter expression by optimizing transcription/translation components, and a tobacco etch virus protease-controlled protein degradation, were integrated. This chimeric biosensor displayed a low basal leakage, a large dynamic range (15.8-fold), and a high threshold level (22.7 g L–1). Finally, the optimized biosensor was successfully applied in the high-throughput microdroplet screening of GABA-overproducing Corynebacterium glutamicum, demonstrating its desired properties for extracellular signal biosensing.

This study investigated the catalytic hydrogenation of ethyl nicotinate using Pd/Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 foam ceramic catalysts prepared via sol-gel impregnation (SI), sol-gel precipitation (SP), precipitation-impregnation (PI), and co-precipitation (CP). We aimed to evaluate the performance and stability of these catalysts as coatings on foam ceramic surfaces in a high-pressure hydrogen reactor at 403 K and 5 MPa. Various physicochemical characterization methods were employed to correlate catalytic performance with physicochemical properties. Results indicated that sol-gel prepared supports had higher specific surface areas, more acidic sites, and better metal-carrier interactions compared to the precipitation method. SEM analyses revealed flatter and smoother coatings from the sol-gel method, while TEM showed uniform Pd distribution with impregnation. Ultimately, the SI method provided the best catalytic performance with a conversion of 86.77 %. The conversion of the substrate remained above 80 % after five cycles.

In this manuscript, three components of lignocellulosic biomass were obtained by deconstructing bamboo with γ-valerolactone-H 2 O biphasic system, and the delignification rate of 80.92 % was achieved at 120 °C for 90 min. Lignin nanospheres with diameters ranging from 75 nm to 2 um could be customized by varying the self-assembly rate. Furthermore, the lignin nanospheres-poly(vinyl alcohol) film was prepared by cross-linking lignin nanospheres and poly(vinyl alcohol), which can obtain 90 % ultraviolet absorption capacity, while the light transmittance in non-ultraviolet band was almost unchanged. At the same time, due to the strong hydrogen formation between lignin nanospheres and poly(vinyl alcohol) bond network, the tensile properties of the composite film were also improved by 30 %. Besides, the high specific surface area of biomass-derived porous biochar (2056 m 2 /g) can be obtained after carbonization of solid residues at 850 °C for 2 h, which was almost 8 times the specific surface area of the direct biomass carbonization due to the removal of lignin and hemicellulose. biomass-derived porous biochar can be used as an adsorbent, with a CO 2 capture capacity of 4.5 mmol g −1 at normal temperature (25 °C, 1 bar). The filtrate after the reaction contained a large amount of hemicellulose oligomers, which can be reacted with dichloromethane at 170 °C for 1 h to obtain the furfural yield of 74 %. In summary, the proposed biorefinery scheme achieves a full-component upgrade of lignocellulose and can be further applied in various downstream fields.

Current clinical strategies for the treatment of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA) primarily target cartilage biology, overlooking the synergetic effect of various cells and inorganic components in shaping the arthritic microenvironment, thereby impeding the effectiveness of existing therapeutic options for TMJOA. Here, γ-Fe 2 O 3 @TA@ALN magnetic nanoparticles (γ-Fe 2 O 3 @TA@ALN MNPs) composed of γ-Fe 2 O 3 , tannic acid (TA), and alendronate sodium (ALN) are engineered to reconstruct the osteoarthritic microenvironment and mitigate TMJOA progression. γ-Fe 2 O 3 @TA@ALN MNPs can promote chondrocytes’ proliferation, facilitate chondrogenesis and anisotropic organization, enhance lubrication and reduce cartilage wear, and encourage cell movement. Magnetic-responsive γ-Fe 2 O 3 @TA@ALN MNPs also exhibit pH sensitivity, which undergoes decomposition within acidic environment to release ALN on demand. Under a 0.2 T static magnetic field, γ-Fe 2 O 3 @TA@ALN MNPs accelerate the synthesis of cartilage-specific proteins, and suppress catabolic-related genes expression and reactive oxygen species generation, affording additional protection to TMJ cartilage. In TMJOA mouse models, articular injection of γ-Fe 2 O 3 @TA@ALN MNPs effectively alleviates cartilage degeneration and subchondral bone loss in short and long terms, offering promising avenues for the development of therapeutic interventions for TMJOA.

Strawberry fruits are among the popular berries due to their bright colour and desirable flavour. However, their rapid quality loss results in a short shelf life and low economic value. This study aimed to comprehensively examine the effects of preharvest spraying at small green (SG), large green (LG), white (W), and red-turning (RT) fruit stages, along with postharvest treatments using γ -aminobutyric acid (GABA) and its synthesis inhibitor, 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MP), on fruit quality and shelf life. Preharvest application of 10 mM GABA at RT stage significantly enhanced the fruit colour, weight, firmness, soluble solids content (SSC), and the contents of GABA, citric acid, Vc, and soluble sugars at harvest. Postharvest treatment with 10 mM GABA notably delayed the decreases in organic acids, soluble sugars, firmness, colour, and SSC. In addition, postharvest 10 mM GABA treatment reduced the decay incidence and weight loss, while 0.2 mM 3-MP had opposite effects in both preharvest and postharvest treatments. GABA partially induced or inhibited the expression of genes involved in citrate metabolism. Overall, GABA demonstrates effectiveness in improving fruit quality (e.g., increase in organic acids, soluble sugars, firmness, colour, and SSC after preharvest treatment or delaying the decrease of these indices) and extending shelf life by modulating the transcripts of genes related to citrate metabolism.

As an environmentally functional material, zeolite solids can strongly adsorb and decompose harmful indoor gases, such as formaldehyde, to improve the home environment. Rare earth sulfide as a nontoxic and environmentally friendly pigment with good coloring performance is one of the promising choices to replace toxic cadmium- and lead-based pigments. In this work, multifunctional red γ-Ce2S3 pigments coated with microporous zeolite solids have been prepared by a hydrothermal method. The preparation process is safe and environmentally friendly. The fabricated composite solids not only absorb gas and water but also absorb water by microporous structures. The solids also show a stable red color, self-cleaning, and radiative cooling. Our results suggest that the multifunctional red cerium sulfide pigment-coated zeolite solids can be applied in color display, temperature and humidity control, and air purification.

Lead halide perovskite single crystals (LHPSC) are promising for room-temperature γ-ray spectroscopy in radiation detection. While MA(CH3NH3)-based LHPSCs are the most straightforward and cost-effective to synthesize from solution, their performance in γ-ray spectroscopy is hindered by significant noise and ion migration at high bias, which degrades their energy resolution (ER). The work introduced an n-type/intrinsic/n-type photodiode incorporating passivation layers of MA-based LHPSCs, grown through solution-process epitaxial growth. This single-polarity device demonstrated an outstanding ER of 3.6% for 662 keV γ-ray photons. Overall, this work provides useful information for developing room-temperature γ-ray detectors based on solution-processed lead halide perovskites.

The nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method and its variants have garnered significant attention for the fabrication of ion-exchange membranes (IEMs) due to several potential advantages, including ease of scalability, reduced material requirements, and enhancements in operational performance. However, the hazards associated with traditional membrane fabrication solvents poses a considerable limitation to the advancement and application of NIPS. This study explores the use of a green solvent, specifically γ-valerolactone (GVL), for the first time in the preparation of IEMs via the NIPS technique. Initially, fundamental investigations, including thermodynamic and kinetic analyses of the casting solution composed of GVL and chloromethylated polysulfone (CMPS), as well as assessments of membrane morphology and electrochemical properties, are conducted to evaluate the feasibility of IEM production in comparison to the NMP/CMPS system. Additionally, some applied experiments, such as desalination by electrodialysis (ED) and acid recovery via diffusion dialysis (DD), are performed to examine the impacts of casting solution composition on the performances of the resulting membranes. The results from the ED experiments indicate that the membrane produced from a 19 w.% GVL/CMPS solution can achieve a 27% reduction in energy consumption while maintaining a comparable current efficiency to commercial membranes. Furthermore, the DD experiments reveal that this membrane exhibits a H + dialysis coefficient of 42 × 10 − 3 $$ 42\times {10}^{-3} $$ m/h and a separation factor of 256, significantly surpassing the performance metrics of commercial membranes. These findings clearly demonstrate that GVL is a viable green solvent for the preparation of polysulfone IEMs with highly competitive performance characteristics.

With the advancement of nuclear energy, the recovery and reuse of uranium pose extremely challenging tasks. This paper commences by toughening polyacrylamide (PAM) with nanorubber polybutadiene (PB) through the radiation-induced graft polymerization (RIGP) method, and diaminomaleonitrile (DAMN) is introduced and amidoximated, giving rise to a three-dimensional network hydrogel named as bis-amidoxime (AO) -based three-dimensional hydrogel uranium adsorbent based on nano-rubber toughening (PAM/PB/DAMN-AO). This hydrogel not only retains the favorable hydrophilicity and chemical stability of PAM but also experiences a significant enhancement in mechanical properties due to the addition of nanorubber PB. In the tests of 10 cyclic compressions (with a strain of ε = 80 %), the compressive strength remains nearly unchanged, indicating a stable structure. During the amidoximation reaction and uranium-adsorption process, the pore structure of the hydrogel has been modified, evolving into a structure more conducive to uranium adsorption. In a 100 ppm uranium solution, the adsorption capacity reaches 154.4 mg·g −1 . The kinetic and isotherm models are evaluated, and the adsorption process is found to be more consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model ( R 2 = 0.992) and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model ( R 2 = 0.997). It exhibits high selectivity in the presence of competing ions and can still maintain an adsorption efficiency of over 90 % after 4 adsorption-desorption cycles, demonstrating excellent recyclability. The prepared hydrogel has a high adsorption capacity for uranyl ions and rapid adsorption kinetics, showing potential application prospects in the fields of nuclear wastewater treatment and uranium resource recovery.

The efficient production of γ-valerolactone (GVL) with high yield directly from xylose is of particular interest but remains a great challenge due to the long reaction path. We herein developed a facile catalytic system to directly convert xylose to GVL with a record-high yield of 54.3 %, employing β-zeolite supported Zr-based catalyst in 1,4-dioxane/isopropanol co-solvent. Using Zr(NO 3 ) 4 ·5 H 2 O as the Zr sources resulting in well-retained β-zeolite structure, larger surface area and pore volume and better dispersion of Zr species, as well as balanced acidic sites where higher amount of Brønsted acid sites promoted the ring-opening of furfural alcohol for this cascade reaction. Notably, the introduction of 1,4-dioxane facilitated the in situ formation of furfural (i.e. yield-determining step) by diluting the competitive adsorption behavior between isopropanol and xylose, allowing more xylose molecules to access the active center, thus promoting the sequential production of GVL with unexpectedly high yield. The present work provides a efficient and straightforward preparation of GVL from xylose, paving the pathway towards higher atom economy.

A dual-drug-loaded γ-polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA) hydrogel was synthesized, integrating third-generation dendrimers (G3) as cross-linkers for the simultaneous encapsulation of hydrophilic doxorubicin (DOX) and hydrophobic camptothecin (CPT). This hydrogel, formed via an efficient EDC/NHS-mediated reaction, demonstrated a biocompatible, porous, and pH-responsive network. The hydrophobic core of G3 significantly enhanced CPT loading, while γ-PGA facilitated effective DOX incorporation. Controlled drug release was observed, with DOX releasing faster in acidic tumor-like environments, optimizing therapeutic impact at the tumor site. In vitro studies highlighted the hydrogel's high biocompatibility and synergistic anticancer efficacy, reducing CT26 colon cancer cell viability more effectively than single-drug systems. In vivo experiments confirmed substantial tumor suppression, prolonged survival, and the absence of systemic toxicity in murine models. These results underscore the potential of this dual-drug delivery platform as a robust, multifunctional system for cancer therapy. The biocompatibility, degradability, and tailored drug release characteristics make this hydrogel a promising candidate for clinical translation, offering a novel solution for enhancing cancer treatment efficacy while minimizing side effects.

The Maillard reaction during the foods processing and hot-pressed oils period generates potential antioxidant compounds that, along with endogenous antioxidants, enhance oxidation stability of oil. This study specifically investigated the interaction between 1-(1 H -imidazole [4,5-C]pyridine-4-yl) ethenone (IMPE), a Maillard reaction product (MRP) isolated from a fructose-histidine system, and γ-tocopherol, the primary endogenous antioxidant in flaxseed oil. The results revealed a significant synergistic antioxidant effect between IMPE and γ-tocopherol. Accelerated oxidation tests (Schaal oven, Rancimat analyses) demonstrated that IMPE/γ-tocopherol mixture exhibited an extended oxidation induction period (7.84 h), substantially exceeding the additive effect expected from IMPE (4.12 h) and γ-tocopherol (5.01 h) individually, resulting in a synergistic degree (SD) of 1.25. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the B3LYP/6–311+G(d,p) level revealed that the primary mechanism underlying this synergy is the regeneration of γ-tocopherol by IMPE, a finding corroborated by experimental degradation assays. These results elucidate a molecular mechanism for MRP-endogenous antioxidant interactions and provide valuable insights for designing effective composite antioxidant systems, particularly for enhancing the stability of hot-pressed oils.
