In this study, attapulgite (AT) was treated by high-temperature roasting and hydrochloric acid to form HcAT. It was then modified with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APS) through the grafting method to synthesize a new adsorbent, which exhibits relatively low regenerative energy consumption in CO2 adsorption and desorption processes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N2 adsorption–desorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis were selected to support the research. The CO2 adsorption process on the adsorbent was studied at different APS loadings and different temperatures. The maximal amount of CO2 adsorbed on the adsorbent is 1.81 mmol/g at 313 K when the APS mass fraction is 30%. The Freundlich isotherm model shows a great correlation with the CO2 adsorption isotherm obtained from the experimental data, and R2 reached up to 0.996. The isosteric heat while CO2 adsorbed on 30%APS-HcAT is calculated as 62.63 kJ/mol. The regeneration cyclic stability of 30%APS-HcAT is excellent, while the CO2 adsorption capacity only decreased by 3.2% after 10 cycles. The energy consumption in the CO2 desorption process was also calculated as 26.875 kJ/mol. Three different kinetic models were selected to fit the experimental data, and two models showed a great fit, which were the pseudo-second and Avrami’s fractional order models. The activation energy of 30%APS-HcAT was 38.826 kJ/mol, which can be calculated from the experimental data, and this value is higher compared with those of the other sorbents modified by the impregnation method and also much lower than the value of the chemical absorption process between traditional amine solvents and CO2.

ObjectivesThis study was conducted to investigate the xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitory activities of 18 monomeric anthocyanins from berry fruits and roselle, and to illustrate the underlying mechanism of the most active anthocyanin delphinidin-3-O-sambubioside.Materials and MethodsEighteen monomeric anthocyanins were prepared and purified in our laboratory. The inhibitory properties of anthocyanins were investigated by in vitro inhibitory activity studies and fluorescence quenching studies; the inhibitory mechanism was explored through kinetic studies, fluorescence quenching studies, circular dichroism analysis and computational docking simulations.ResultsXO inhibitory activities of anthocyanins were related to the structures of B rings and glycosides. Among all the tested anthocyanins, delphinidin-3-O-sambubioside showed the most potent inhibitory activity with an IC50 of 17.1 μM, which was comparable to the positive control allopurinol. Spectroscopic results revealed that delphinidin-3-O-sambubioside could spontaneously interact with XO and induce conformational changes. Computational docking study indicated that delphinidin-3-O-sambubioside could bind to XO with a proper orientation, stably formed π–π interactions and hydrogen bonds with key residues, thus preventing the substrate from entering the active pocket.ConclusionsIn brief, our study identified delphinidin-3-O-sambubioside as a potent XO inhibitor from natural anthocyanins, which is potentially applicable for prevention and treatment of hyperuricemia.

K 2 TiYb(PO 4 ) 3 microcrystals with langbeinite structure have been prepared for the first time by solid state reaction. Pure K 2 TiYb(PO 4 ) 3 sample with size of 10–20 µm was obtained when the calcination temperature was 1000 °C. The microstructure and performance of the microcrystals are studied by using X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), FTIR and Raman spectra , UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra, and upconversion photoluminescence spectra. The electronic structure analysis by XPS shows that K 2 TiYb(PO 4 ) 3 has the stronger Ti-O ionic band and weaker P-O covalent band than KTiOPO 4 . The absorption peaks at 911 and 975 nm are assigned to the transition of Yb 3+ from 2 F 7/2 (0) to 2 F 5/2 (2′) and 2 F 5/2 (0′) levels, respectively. Under the excitation of 980 nm laser, K 2 TiYb(PO 4 ) 3 produces polychromatic luminescence: strong blue emission at 480 nm and weak red emission at 653 nm, and the corresponding lifetimes are 268.6 and 275.1 μs, respectively. The strong blue emission is assigned to the cooperative luminescence between Yb 3+ -Yb 3+ pairs, and the red emission is related to defects in the samples. All the CIE color coordinates for the langbeinite-type compounds are located in the blue region, which shows their great potential as blue upconversion photoluminescence materials.

Production of pyridine derivatives from bio-based feedstocks instead of fossil fuels is a promising strategy. The development of effective heterogeneous catalysts and mild reaction systems for pyridinization of renewable biomass derivatives remains a huge challenge. In this article, a direct and environment-friendly method was reported to produce 3-hydroxypyridine from bio-based furfural in water over a Raney Fe catalyst. Raney Fe exhibited an efficient catalytic performance for activation of the aldehyde group of furfural and afforded an 18.2% yield of 3-hydroxypyridine at 120 °C with ammonia as N source. The polymerization of furfural on the catalyst in hot water was the main cause of deactivation, which was verified by the scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and N 2 adsorption and desorption analysis. A possible mechanism for this reaction was also proposed. This study provides a new way for academia and industry to realize the synthesis of nitrogen-containing chemicals from biomass and its derivatives.

Polymer solution has extremely extensive applications in many natural and industrial processes, especially in oilfield development field, such as polymer flooding, fracturing and water shut-off. Thus, the study of flow behaviors of polymer in formation pores is significantly important. In this paper, the flow behaviors of the polymer droplets in the 3-D pore throat structure were systematically studied. Additionally, the influencing factors (polymer concentration, molecular weight and pore throat ratio, for instance) were investigated. As the increasing of polymer concentration and molecular weight, the polymer droplets were more difficult to break, which means the critical flow rate decreased and the average sizes of the first daughter droplets (FDD) were longer synchronously. Moreover, with the increase in pore throat ratio, the critical flow rate increased and the length of the FDD decreased. In addition, the prediction models of the length of the FDD with polymer concentration and pore throat ratio were established, respectively. The prediction model revealed that the length of the FDD satisfied an exponential relationship with the polymer concentration and a linear relationship with the pore throat ratio. Finally, the average size of droplets after macroscopic core flooding experiment was 8 μm and 17 μm when the polymer concentration was 0.01% and 0.1%, respectively. The results were consistent with the breakup behaviors of polymer droplets in the microscopic pore throat structure.

To explore the effects of end groups on the confined crystallization of an alkyl chain, 3-pentadecylphenol (PDP) was infiltrated into the anodic aluminum oxide template (AAO) to investigate the melting and crystallization behaviors of PDP in a nanoconfined environment. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) found that the solid–solid phase transition of PDP occurred under confined conditions, and the absence of the (00L) reflections indicated that the stacking of the end groups of the alkyl chain layered structure was seriously disturbed. Thermal analysis (TG) showed that the thermal stability of the confined samples decreased due to the confinement effect, and the introduction of end groups made the confinement effect more obvious. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) results well reflected the space–time equivalence in the PDP crystallization processes, i.e., the solid–solid phase transition can be achieved by reducing the cooling rate or confining PDP in the nanometer space. Compared with C15, the introduction of the end groups with a phenol ring led to the disappearance of the solid–solid phase transition of an alkyl chain at high cooling rates. In the confined environment, the introduction of the end groups with a phenol ring caused the melting double peaks of the alkyl chain to become a single melting peak, and it also caused the disappearance of the surface freezing monolayer for alkyl chains. Through the analysis of crystallinity, it was found that AAO-PDP was more sensitive to AAO pore size changes than AAO-C15, the Xc of AAO-PDP had a good linear relationship with the pore size d, but the Xc of the AAO-C15 had a nonlinear relationship with the pore size d. Attenuated total reflection (ATR)-IR proved that in the confined environment, the order of the alkyl chain decreased and the degree of chain distortion increased.

Liver cancer, one of the most common types of cancer in the world, is the second leading cause of death for cancer patients. For liver cancer, there is an urgent need for an effective treatment with no or less toxic side effects. Lactonic sophorolipids (LSL), as a potential anticancer drug, has attracted wide attention of pharmaceutical researchers with its good biological activities. The effects of LSL and cell death inhibitors were measured by MTT test on HepG2 cells. Meanwhile, the morphology of the cells was observed under a microscope. The apoptosis rate was detected by flow cytometry, and the expression levels of enzyme activity of Caspase-3 and Caspase-9 were measured by detection kits. Meanwhile, mRNA levels of Apaf-1 , Caspase-3 , Bax , and Bcl-2 were measured by quantitative real-time RT-PCR; protein levels of Caspase-3, Cleaved Caspase-3, Bax, and Bcl-2 were measured by western blot. LSL can inhibit the proliferation of cells, and it is possible to induce apoptosis in cells. The HepG2 cells with LSL co-culture exhibited typical apoptotic morphology, and the expression levels of enzyme activity of Caspase-3 and Caspase-9 increased ( P < 0.05). We also found that LSL increases cell apoptosis rate and regulates the expression of genes and proteins associated with apoptosis through the Caspase-3 pathway. These results indicate that LSL may be one of the potential drug candidates to inhibit the proliferation and induce apoptosis in HepG2 cells.
Key points
• LSL, which is of good biological activities such as anti-bacterium, virus elimination, and inflammatory response elimination, has been firstly used to intervene in vitro to investigate its effect on HepG2 cell proliferation. • LSL can inhibit the proliferation of cells, and it is possible to induce apoptosis in HepG2 cells through the Caspase-3 pathway. • The mechanism of LSL action on HepG2 cell proliferation was firstly also discussed, which provides a certain experimental reference for the clinical treatment of liver cancer. The catalytic isomerization of 2-methyl-3-butenenitrile (2M3BN), a model reaction in the DuPont process, has been performed using NiL 4 (L=tri- O - p -tolyl phosphite) as a catalyst. The lowered catalytic activity in the isomerization with coexistence of 2-pentenenitrile (2PN) and 2-methyl-2-butenenitrile (2M2BN) indicates that both 2PN and 2M2BN are the catalyst inhibitors , and the quantitative relationship between the conversion of 2M3BN and the content of 2M2BN and 2PN is provided. DFT calculation results suggest that the inhibition effect is attributed to the generation of dead-end intermediates (2PN)NiL 2 and (2M2BN)NiL 2 , both of which take nickel atom out of the catalytic cycle in the isomerization process. To suppress the inhibition effect, new catalytic intermediates are rationally designed based on their computational %V bur . An efficient method that adding extra ligand 1, 5-bis(diphenylphosphino)pentane (dppp5) to the NiL 4 catalyst is selected experimentally. Compared to the results obtained with NiL 4 as catalyst, the (dppp5)NiL 2 increases the conversion of 2M3BN from 74.5 % to 93.4 % at 3 h of reaction and provides a high selectivity to 3PN (> 98 %) at optimal conditions.

Photostrictive effect that has been discovered for over half a century is getting renewed interest in recent years in view of the great potentials for optomechanical applications. Ferroelectric materials represented by lead lanthanum zirconated titanate have been widely studied in this field because of their relatively large photostriction and fast photoresponse, but their wide bandgaps with limit response to visible light hinder further practical application. Here, visible-light-driven photostrictions of the order of 10 −3 are discovered in Bi(Ni 2/3 Nb 1/3 )O 3 –PbTiO 3 (BNNPT) ferroelectric solid solutions. Three BNNPT compositions with different phase structures, exhibiting notably different piezoelectric and photovoltaic properties, are selected to conduct the photostriction investigation, and their analogous photostrictive behaviors contradict with previous acknowledgment that the photostriction of ferroelectrics originates from the photovoltage-induced inverse piezoresponse. The nonuniform shifts of the XRD diffraction peaks under external laser illumination and the redshifts of the laser power dependent Raman modes disclose that the photostriction is mainly attributed to the light-induced distortion of BO 6 octahedra. This study sheds insight into the mechanism of the photostriction of ferroelectrics.

Introduction: Serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase 3, a serine/threonine kinase that functions downstream of the PI3K signaling pathway, plays a critical role in neoplastic processes. It is expressed by various tumors and contributes to carcinogenesis. Objective: The objective was to investigate serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase 3 expression in nasopharyngeal carcinoma, to study the anti-tumor effects of serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase 3 shRNA by inhibiting its expression in nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells and to discuss the potential implications of our findings. Methods: Serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase 3 protein expression in nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell lines (CNE-1, CNE-2, HNE-1, HONE-1, and SUNE-1) and the human immortalized nasopharyngeal epithelium cell line NP69 were assayed by western blotting. Serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase 3 expression in 42 paraffin-embedded nasopharyngeal carcinoma tissues were performed by immunohistochemistry. MTT assay, flow cytometry, and scratch tests were performed after CNE-2 cells were transfected with the best serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase 3 shRNA plasmid selected by western blotting using lipofectamine to study its effect on cell proliferation, apoptosis, and migration. Results: Serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase 3 was overexpressed in human nasopharyngeal carcinoma tissues and cells. Serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase 3 expression decreased markedly after CNE-2 cells were transfected with the serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase 3 shRNA, leading to strong inhibition of cell proliferation and migration. In addition, the apoptosis rate increased in CNE-2 cells after serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase 3 knockdown. Conclusion: Serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase 3 expression was more frequently observed as the nasopharyngeal epithelium progresses from normal tissue to carcinoma. This suggests that serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase 3 contributes to the multistep process of NPC carcinogenesis. Serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase 3 represents a target for nasopharyngeal carcinoma therapy, and a basis exists for the further investigation of this adjuvant treatment modality for nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

In order to compound gelatin (GEL) with poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) (P(3,4HB)) to improve the hydrophilicity and biocompatibility, a simple and convenient method for preparing P(3,4HB)/GEL composite nanofibrous (P/G-CNF) was proposed. Alkyl Polyglycoside (APG) was used as an emulsifier to prepare a stable P(3,4HB)/GEL composite solution, and novel P/G-CNF was prepared by electrospinning. The intermolecular interaction, micromorphology and porosity, crystallization and mechanical properties , hydrophilicity and cytocompatibility of P/G-CNF were characterized. The results reveal that P(3,4HB), APG and GEL form many hydrogen bonds . When the m(P(3,4HB):GEL) is 10:2, the as-prepared nanofibrous exhibit the best micromorphology with a diameter and porosity of 604 nm and 68.33%. With the increasing GEL content, the crystallization and mechanical properties of P(3,4HB)/GEL composite nanofibrous scaffold (P/G-CNS) are further enhanced and decline after reaching the maximum. The hydrophilicity of P/G-CNS is significantly improved by introducing GEL. The cell proliferation rate of P/G-CNS is higher than 100%, of which the cytotoxicity grade is 0, indicating that it is non-cytotoxic. The P/G-CNS has excellent cytocompatibility and provides better cell attachment, growth and proliferation, showing promising application prospects for tissue regeneration and biomedical materials .

Nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has been a fatal and refractory disease worldwide. Novel therapeutic developments based on fundamental investigations of anticancer mechanisms underlie substantial foundations to win the fight against cancer diseases. In this study, we isolated a natural product fusaricide (FCD) from an endophytic fungus of Lycium barbarum, identified as Epicoccum sp. For the first time, we discovered that FCD potently inhibited proliferation in a variety of human NSCLC cell lines, with relatively less toxicity to normal cells. Our study exhibited that FCD induced apoptosis, caused DNA damage and cell cycle arrest in G0/G1 phase, and activated caspase-3 as well as other apoptosis-related factors in human NSCLC NCI-H460 cells. FCD was proven to be an iron chelator that actively decreased levels of cellular labile iron pool in NCI-H460 cells in our study. FeCl3 supplement reversed FCD-induced apoptosis. The upregulation of transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1) and downregulation of ferritin heavy chain (FTH) expression were observed after FCD treatment. In summary, our study highlighted the potential anticancer effects of FCD against human NSCLCs and demonstrated that the FCD-mediated apoptosis depended on binding to intracellular iron.
