5′-(CGA)n sequence-assisted pH-controlled assembly of supramolecular DNA nanostructure

Yuting Yan,Yanwei Cao,Chunsheng Xiao,Yang Li,Xiaoxuan Xiang,Xinhua Guo

Herein, the DNA strands containing 5′-(CGA)n and consecutive guanines are used to construct supramolecular DNA nanostructures that are size-controlled by pH values. Additionally, the introduction of thymine linkers within DNA nanostructures is necessary to maintain the stability of long-sized nanostructures. This work also demonstrates a method for accurately building DNA nanostructures.

Poly dimethyl diallyl ammonium coated CMK-5 for sustained oral drug release

Chen Zhang,Qinfu Zhao,Long Wan,Tianyi Wang,Jin Sun,Yikun Gao,Tongying Jiang,Siling Wang

A new oral sustained drug delivery system (DDS) involving a combination of inorganic mesoporous material (CMK-5) and organic polymer poly dimethyl diallyl ammonium (PDDA) was established to determine its general suitability for use with poorly water soluble drugs. Nimodipine , carvedilol and fenofibrate , three different drugs with acidic or alkaline properties, were selected as model drugs and loaded into carriers. The physicochemical properties of the drug carriers were systematically studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen adsorption. The structural body changes of the composites in release medium, with or without additional salts, were also studied using particle sizing systems, nitrogen adsorption and zeta potential measurement in order to investigate the sustained release mechanism of the drugs. The results obtained showed that sustained release of drug from the designed DDS was mainly due to the blockage effect arising from the strong swelling of the coated polymers when in contact with release medium. Additional salts, when they reached a certain level, allowed a dramatic burst release. We believe that our designed sustained DDS provide a new option for water insoluble drugs and can be considered as fundamental for those more sophisticated DDS increasingly required in modern medical treatments.

Production of aromatic hydrocarbons through catalytic pyrolysis of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural from biomass

Yan Zhao,Tao Pan,Yong Zuo,Qing-Xiang Guo,Yao Fu

Catalytic pyrolysis of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was conducted on a fixed bed reactor at atmospheric pressure. HMF could be converted into aromatic hydrocarbons through catalytic pyrolysis . The catalysts and reaction conditions were both critical in maximizing the aromatic hydrocarbons selectivity . Four catalysts, β-zeolite, HZSM-5, Ga/HZSM and In/HZSM were tested in this study. HZSM-5 (Si/Al   =   50) was found to be the most effective catalyst in both reactivity and selectivity among these catalysts. Under the reaction temperature of 600   °C, the highest carbon yield of 48.99% of aromatic hydrocarbons was achieved from catalytic pyrolysis HMF with HZSM-5 (Si/Al   =   50) as catalyst. Moreover, the HZSM-5 (Si/Al   =   50) catalyst was recycled for five times without shown deactivation of the catalyst.

A biodiesel additive: etherification of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural with isobutene to tert-butoxymethylfurfural

Feifei Yang,Shuguang Zhang,Z. Conrad Zhang,Jingbo Mao,Shenmin Li,Jingmei Yin,Jinxia Zhou

Biodiesel is a sustainable and environmentally compatible diesel fuel substitute that presents certain limitations, particularly low-temperature flow properties, which are attributable to its long fatty chain structure. Branched alkyl derivates such as tertiary butyl ethers are efficient biodiesel additives for improved cold flow behaviour of biodiesel. In this study, tert-butoxymethylfurfural (tBMF) is synthesised as a biodiesel additive through etherification of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), a non-edible biomass-derived building block, with isobutene (IB) on a series of acid zeolites and liquid acids. The catalytic activity and selectivity of a zeolite catalyst involve not only optimisation of the number and strength of its acidic sites and adsorption properties but also promotion of its internal pore space. Efficient solvent systems did not include extremely weakly polar or strongly polar solvents but included moderately polar solvents, such as glycol dimethyl ether which presents suitable hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties. The HY zeolite with a SiO2/Al2O3 mole ratio of 12 in combination with glycol dimethyl ether solvent exhibited an excellent tBMF selectivity of 94 mol% with 59 mol% 5-HMF conversion after 3 h of reaction at 60 °C. Side reactions of 5-HMF dimerisation and the IB oligomerisation were minimal under mild reaction conditions. The activity of the deactivated catalyst was fully recovered by calcination in air, and a detailed deactivation mechanism was proposed.

Catalytic Amidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-Furandicarboxamide over Alkali Manganese Oxides

Xiaofang Li,Xiuquan Jia,Jiping Ma,Yongming Xu,Yizheng Huang,Jie Xu

2,5-Furandicarboxamide was firstly synthesized in yield of 85% via catalytic oxidative amidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural with aqueous NH 3 over alkali manganese oxides of α -MnO 2 /Na x MnO 2 . The intermediates of 5-hydroxymethyl-furonitrile, 2,5-dicyanofuran, and 5-cyano-2-furancarboxamide were verified and their reactivities were further examined. The kinetic analysis results showed that the transformation of intermediate product of 5-cyano-2-furancarboxamide to 2,5-furan-dicarboxamide is a slower step, which is closely relative to the reaction temperature and basicity of catalyst.

Perovskite LaMnO3/ZSM-5 composites for H2S reactive adsorption at high temperature

Liu Dongjing,Zhou Weiguo,Wu Jiang

Perovskite LaMnO 3 /ZSM-5 was used for reactive adsorption of hydrogen sulfide at 500–700 °C. The sorbents showed good desulphurization performance, the highest sulfur capacity of 1020 µmol S/g over 5La5Mn/ZSM-5 was obtained at 600 °C. The reducing gases (H 2 and CO) can obviously shorten the breakthrough time and reduce the sulfur capacity. Incorporating Mn ions into La 2 O 3 lattice improved the sulfidation activity due to the formation of perovskite LaMnO 3 with good reducibility and structure stability.

Layered nanohydroxyapatite as a novel nanocarrier for controlled delivery of 5-fluorouracil

Honglin Luo,Dehui Ji,Chunzhi Li,Yong Zhu,Guangyao Xiong,Yizao Wan

Layered materials intercalated by drug molecules have attracted much attention since they exhibit improved safety and effectiveness in drug delivery. In this work, layered nanohydroxyapatite (L-nHAp) was synthesized by template method and a model anticancer drug 5-fluorouracil (5FU) was loaded by intercalation technique. The morphology and structure of L-nHAp/5FU hybrids were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). XRD and FTIR revealed the successful drug intercalation into the gallery of L-nHAp. TGA evidenced enhanced thermal stability of the drug molecules in the gallery of L-nHAp. The in vitro release experiments demonstrated that the release of 5FU from L-nHAp/5FU was slower than that from rodlike nanohydroxyapatite (R-nHAp)/5FU. Furthermore, the release of 5FU from L-nHAp/5FU hybrid could be fitted by first-order, Higuchi, and Rigter-Pappas models. It is believed that L-nHAp may be a promising carrier for anticancer drugs.

Hydroxyl-functionalized pillar[5]arene with high separation performance for gas chromatography

Mengyi Ba,Wen Li,Yanli Song,Yuanyuan Zhang,Xiang Xu,Haixin Liu,Zhiqiang Cai,Shaoqiang Hu,Xianming Liu,Tao Sun

Here we report the first example of employing hydroxyl-functionalized pillar[5]arene (P5A-C10-OH) as stationary phase for capillary gas chromatographic (GC) separations. The statically coated P5A-C10-OH capillary column possessed moderate polarity and column efficiency of 3233 plates per m determined by n-dodecane. As a result, the P5A-C10-OH column exhibited high-resolution capability for the mixture of 17 analytes from apolar to polar nature. Importantly, it exhibited advantageous performance for high resolution of the challenging isomers of bromonitrobenzene, chloroaniline, bromoaniline, iodoaniline and dimethylaniline with good peak shapes over the P5A-C10 and commercial HP-35 columns. In addition, eight cis-/trans-isomers with diverse types were baseline separated on the P5A-C10-OH column. And the application of detecting isomeric impurities in real samples gave strong evidence of its potential and feasibility for the viable GC analysis.

Mesoporous Cu-doped ZSM-5 zeolite for efficient radical-mediated decarboxylative silylation

Jun-Qing Ye,Pin-Xi Wang,Xin Rong,Qi-Da Ding,Jun-Feng Qian,Sheng-Chun Chen,Ming-Yang He,Qun Chen

Vinylsilane compounds are essential chemical feedstocks and intermediates in organic synthesis. A heterogeneous Cu-containing mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst developed through an in-situ doping method can be used for preparing vinylsilane compounds via decarboxylative coupling with remarkable catalytic efficiency. The mesoporous structure along with the appropriate surface area and pore volume of the catalyst is likely to be responsible for facilitating mass transfer in the reaction process. Additionally, due to the suitable Brønsted and Lewis acid active sites, adsorption and activation of reactant molecules can be readily triggered to promote the generation of alkoxyl radicals, which is the crucial species to complete the catalytic cycle. Importantly, the transformation exhibits high efficiency, broad substrate scope, and good reusability for at least six cycles.

Cu-Ce MOF-based heterojunction catalysts for the electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Yajun Liu,Yongzhi Xiong,Chenxin Jin,Changzhou Chen,Liangliang Zhang,Jianchun Jiang,Jingcong Xie

Herein, a novel hydrothermal synthesis strategy is proposed for the preparation of novel Cu-Ce MOF heterojunction nano catalysts (CuCeO X /C) for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) electrooxidation reaction in this paper. CuCeO X /C exhibits superior catalytic performance, with the current density of CuCeO X /C reaching 100 mA cm −2 at a low potential of 1.408 V vs. RHE, and doubling to 280 mA cm −2 at a lower potential of 1.5 V vs. RHE. Under these conditions, the conversion of HMF reaches 100 %, with a selectivity of over 99.11 % for 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and a Faradaic efficiency of 97.76 %. Theoretical calculations and In-situ-EIS have demonstrated that Ce-based Cu-MOF heterojunction nanocatalysts enhance the adsorption energy of the CuCeO X /C catalysts on HMF substrates while also decreasing reaction energy barrier of HMFOR. Based on our work, the employment of CeCu/MOF heterojunction electrocatalysts for efficient electro-oxidation of HMF to FDCA paves a green and sustainable way for advancing sustainable chemical processes and biomass valorization.

Catalytic Esterification of Pentaerythritol over a Mesoporous Composite SnCl2@HZSM-5 Catalyst

Miao Mi,Jie Xiong,Suhong Zhang,Yidong Zhang,Xin Chen,Rong Shao,Wei Xu,Jianfei Ding

Graphical Compared to SnCl 2 and HZSM-5, SnCl 2 @HZSM-5 was a mesoporous composite, which had the most amount of total and weak acidity, and the weakest acid strength. More total acid content is beneficial to increase pentaerythritol conversion, and the weak acid can improve the selectivity of PETS, and weak acid strength is beneficial to inhibit the formation of carbon deposits. Therefore, SnCl 2 @HZSM-5 showed the highest pentaerythritol conversion, PETS selectivity and catalytic stability. The mesoporous HZSM-5 and SnCl 2 @HZSM-5 mesoporous composite were prepared by two-step crystallization and wet impregnation method, respectively. The catalytic esterification performances of SnCl 2 , HZSM-5 and SnCl 2 @HZSM-5 were compared. SnCl 2 @HZSM-5 had the most amount of total and weak acidity, and the weakest acid strength. More total acid content was beneficial to increase pentaerythritol conversion, and the weak acid could improve the selectivity of PETS, and weak acid strength was beneficial to inhibit the formation of carbon deposits. Brönsted and Lewis acid sites were present simultaneously on the SnCl 2 @HZSM-5 catalyst. Moreover, some extra Brönsted acid sites were created on the SnCl 2 @HZSM-5 catalyst, because the interaction of SnCl 2 with HZSM-5 may result in the exchange of Sn 2+ with protons. Both acid sites could catalyze the esterification reaction, and the Brönsted acid site was more beneficial to increasing PETS selectivity. Therefore, SnCl 2 @HZSM-5 showed the highest pentaerythritol conversion, PETS selectivity and catalytic stability. The generation of coke and the leaching of Sn were the main cause of catalyst deactivation. Under the optimized process conditions: 105 °C, 4.7 molar ratio of stearic acid and pentaerythritol, 1.2 wt % catalyst amount and 2.5 wt % SnCl 2 loading, after 3 h reaction time, the pentaerythritol conversion, PETS selectivity and yield was 99.3 %, 97.2 % and 96.5 %, respectively.

Constructing Pr-doped CoOOH catalytic sites for efficient electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Botao Fan,Hao Zhang,Bang Gu,Feng Qiu,Qiue Cao,Wenhao Fang

Electrocatalytic conversion of renewable biomass is emerging as a promising route for sustainable chemical production; hence it urgently calls for developing efficient electrocatalysts with low potentials and high current densities. Herein, a Pr-doped Co(OH) 2 hexagonal sheet (Pr/Co = 1/9, in mole) is synthesized by electrodeposition as highly performant catalyst for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) oxidation reaction (HMFOR) to produce 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). This novel and low-cost catalyst possesses a rather low onset potential of 1.05 V (vs. RHE) and requires only 1.10 V (vs. RHE) to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 for HMFOR, significantly outperforming Co(OH) 2 benchmark (i.e., 210 mV higher to reach 10 mA cm −2 ). The origin of Pr promotion effect as well as the evolution of CoOOH catalytic sites and HMFOR process has been deeply elucidated by physical characterizations, kinetic experiments, in situ electrochemical techniques, and theoretical calculations. The unique Pr-ameliorated CoOOH active centers enable 100% conversion of HMF, 99.6% selectivity of FDCA, and 99.7% Faraday efficiency, with a superior cycling durability toward HMFOR. This can be one of the most outstanding results for Co-based HMFOR catalysts to date in the literature. Thereby this work can help open up new horizons for constructing novel and efficient Co-based electrocatalysts by the utilization of lanthanide elements.
