Additive-Free, In Situ Rapid Repair of Vacancies in Fe[Fe(CN)6] Electrodes for Efficient Capacitive Deionization

Zewen Fan,Wannan Wang,Jing Ren,Shaofei Zhang,Ruipeng Ren,Yong-Kang Lv

Fe[Fe(CN)6] (FeHCF) is considered a promising material for capacitive deionization–desalination of saline wastewater due to its excellent structure. However, additives are usually introduced during the synthesis of FeHCF in order to avoid [Fe(CN)6]3– vacancy defects filled by ligand water, which can result in the appearance of harmful byproducts and additional water treatment costs. In this study, an additive-free in situ vacancy repair strategy is proposed for the rapid synthesis of high-quality FeHCF in a saturated K3Fe(CN)6 solution. During the process of synthesizing FeHCF in solution, a high concentration of [Fe(CN)6]3– is found to facilitate the binding of Fe3+ to [Fe(CN)6]3– and hinder the hydrolysis and coordination reaction of Fe3+. After undergoing repair, FeHCF4 demonstrates an increased capacity and highly reversible electrochemical performance due to the robust structure. When utilized as Faraday cathodes in hybrid capacitive deionization (HCDI) systems, FeHCF4 exhibits a higher salt removal capacity (65.67 mg g–1) and lower energy consumption (0.68 kWh kg–1-NaCl) compared to unrepaired FeHCF1, while still maintaining excellent cycling performance. This environmentally friendly approach of repairing vacancies serves as a source of inspiration for the advancement of high-performance Prussian Blue analogues as capacitive sodium-removing materials.

3,5-Dimethyl-8-methoxy-3,4-dihydro-1H-isochromen-6-ol Attenuates Ulcerative Colitis via Targeting NLRP3 in Mice

Mengru Zhou,Xiaoyao Ma,Jiaqi Zhang,Xuan Lu

3,5-Dimethyl-8-methoxy-3,4-dihydro-1H-isochromen-6-ol (DMD) is a polyketide compound obtained from the endophytic fungus Penicillium sp. HJT-A-10 of Rhodiola tibetica. R. tibetica is a nourishing food and also used in traditional Chinese medicine and Xizang medicine. In dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis (UC) mice, DMD significantly alleviated the pathological symptom of UC. Network pharmacology studies have shown that nucleotide-binding domain-like receptor family pyrin domain containing (NLRP) 3 is the primary target protein of DMD associated with anti-UC. In molecular biology studies, DMD suppressed the activation of NLRP3 and decreased the expression of downstream inflammatory proteins and pro-inflammatory cytokines in UC. The finding was further verified in knockout mice. DMD lost the effect of attenuating DSS-induced UC in NLRP3–/– mice. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that DMD reduces inflammatory response and balances the barrier integrity to attenuate UC via targeting NLRP3, and DMD is a potential natural agent or dietary supplement for attenuating UC.

Polyamide 6 composite nano-fiber/net functionalized by polyethyleneimine on quartz crystal microbalance for highly sensitive formaldehyde sensors

Bin Ding,Xianfeng Wang,Jianyong Yu,Moran Wang

A nanostructured complex, polyethyleneimine (PEI) functionalized polyamide 6 (PA 6) (PEI-PA 6) nano-fiber/net (NFN), is developed as a novel sensing coating on quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) for highly sensitive formaldehyde detection. The NFN structured substrate comprising common electrospun nanofibers and two-dimensional (2D) spider-web-like nano-nets fabricated by a facile electro-spinning/netting (ESN) process, exhibit large specific surface area, high porosity and large stacking density, which make them optimal candidates for sensing applications. The responses of the sensors in response to formaldehyde were analyzed in terms of PA 6 NFN membranes morphologies, PA 6 substrate and sensing PEI coating loads, and the comparison with nanoporous fibers. Experimental results show that this new PEI-PA 6 NFN nanostructure based QCM sensor exhibits excellent formaldehyde sensing performances in terms of remarkably low detection limit (50 ppb), rapid response, superior selectivity and good reproducibility. We expect the highly sensitive and robust NFN-based QCM sensor may serve as a practical and powerful tool for gas sensing and chemical analysis.

Preparation of 6-gingerol loaded chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol active films and applications in the preservation of grouper fillets

Jiaqi Yuan,Huihui Liu,Jian Zhang,Jing Xie,Jun Yan

The limited shelf-life and vulnerability to microbial contamination of grouper fillets pose a pressing challenge. 6-gingerol exhibits both antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, which have the potential for application in food preservation. This study aimed to assess the antibacterial effect of 6-gingerol, prepare a 6-gingerol loaded CS/PVA active films, and evaluate the preservation effect on grouper fillets. Results indicated that the incorporation of 6-gingerol (1.8 mg/mL) significantly enhanced the elongation at break, antimicrobial, and antioxidant activities by 64.35 %, 72.85 %, and 87.13 %, respectively, compared to CS/PVA film. The total volatile basic nitrogen, thiobarbituric acid reactive substance, and the total sulfhydryl of grouper fillets on day 12 were reduced by 35.39 %, 38.96 %, and 36.52 %, respectively, along with improved sensory ratings. The shelf-life of grouper fillets was extended from 9 days to 12 days. This study provides a novel approach for preserving grouper fillets and the high-value utilisation of ginger, providing a valuable reference for developing natural active packaging materials with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.

Interleukin-6-taregeted dual-drug nanoparticles enhance glioblastoma chemotherapy by facilitating blood-brain barrier penetration and alleviating cardiotoxicity

Zesheng Sun,Jialiang Lin,Yue Huang,Qianqian Liu,Xucheng Zhu,Yu Yang,Ya Wen,Chunbin Shao,Weiquan Liao,Yan Song,Sharon Prince,Yi Wang,Rongqin Huang,Jinlong Shi

Overcoming the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to effectively deliver chemotherapeutics while minimizing systemic toxicity remains a formidable challenge in glioblastoma (GBM) treatment. Herein, amphiphilic liposomal nanoparticles are engineered to encapsulate hydrophobic ursolic acid (UA) and hydrophilic doxorubicin (DOX), surface-functionalized with an interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor-targeting peptide (I 6 P 8 ) to enable glioma-specific targeting. The I 6 P 8 -modified nanoparticles facilitate BBB penetration and selective glioma accumulation, thereby potentiating the synergistic cytotoxicity of DOX and UA. Furthermore, the interaction between I 6 P 8 and IL-6 not only impairs IL-6-mediated glioma cell proliferation but also enhances therapeutic efficacy. Notably, the dual-drug nanoparticles mitigate DOX-induced cardiotoxicity by attenuating NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX4) expression and promoting nitric oxide (NO) release via UA, thereby preserving myocardial integrity. Comprehensive in vitro and in vivo evaluations confirm that the engineered nanoplatform significantly prolongs median survival of GBM-bearing mice while exhibiting excellent biocompatibility. This study introduces a targeted and low-toxic nanotherapeutic strategy for effective GBM management.

Vat photopolymerization 3D printing of Al2O3 ceramic cores with strip-shaped pores by using polyamide 6 fiber template

Xiaofei Zhai,Jingyi Chen,Ruyue Su,Xiong Gao,Xueqin Zhang,Rujie He

The complex ceramic core used for hollow turbine blades requires high porosity and flexural strength. This work combined vat photopolymerization 3D printing with sacrificial template method to prepare Al 2 O 3 ceramic cores with strip-shaped pores using polyamide 6 (PA6) fibers as templates. When the porosity was greater than 30%, the maximum flexural strength reached up to 110.48 MPa. The sacrificial templating method improved the porosity of Al 2 O 3 ceramic cores, forming an internal porous structure that combined strip-shaped large pores with irregularly shaped small pores. The influences of PA6 fiber content and diameter on the shrinkage, porosity, microstructure, and comprehensive properties of alumina ceramic cores were studied, revealing the mechanism of the coexistence of high porosity and high strength.

The culture of A549 cells and its secreted cytokine IL-6 monitoring on the designed multifunctional microfluidic chip

Hong He,Xiaoli Wang,Haolan Tan,Songtao Xiang,Yi Xu

A multifunctional microfluidic chip integrated with perfusion cell culture and in situ SERS detection of cell secretion was designed and developed for the detection of IL-6 secretion from LPS-stimulation of A549 cells in this paper. Researching works were focused on A549 cell activity and secretion in the constructed LPS-stimulated A549 cells model. On the designed microchip, a bubble trap chamber was designed to remove the bubbles in the culture medium which could also be simultaneously preheated by a split hot plate. Then, a long-time perfusion culture process of 549 cells could be realized. Under the optimized conditions the A549 cells could be cultured and kept in good activity for more than 36 h. Subsequently, the model of interaction between LPS and A549 cells was established on the designed microchip. When LPS-stimulated A549 cells, the IL-6 which was one of the secretions formed in this process was detected quantitatively by SERS spectral technique. The silver-coated gold nano-stars were prepared and taken as a sensitive enhancing probe for the SERS detection of IL-6 secreted from LPS-stimulated A549 cells. The immunomagnetic beads, IL-6 antigen, and SERS probes were mixed and incubated in the microchip and form a sandwich structure which was captured by the permanent magnet in the detection zone for SERS detection. The reference material of IL-6 was used to establish the calibration curve, and the linear range and detection limit were 1–10000 pg/mL and 0.75 pg/mL, respectively. Then, the IL-6 secretion from LPS-stimulated A549 cells was detected hourly for 7 h by this established method. The process of LPS stimulation of A594 cells did not lead to a sustained increase in the SERS spectral signature of IL-6. Instead, IL6 secretion initially increased sharply, then decreased and eventually stabilized. It could be due to a potential mechanism that the cells self-regulated to mitigate the inflammatory effects in response to sustained stimulation. The proposed multifunctional microfluidic chip, characterized by high sensitivity and the ability to perform continuous hourly detection, exhibited significant application prospects in the study of external stimulation on cells.

Machine Learning-Based Screening of Cosmetic Ingredients Identifies Vat Blue 6 as a Thyroid Hormone Receptor β Disruptor

Siyi Wang,Min Nian,Yu Ma,Xiaojia Chen,Xiaotong Ji,Changzhi Shi,Xing Chen,Mingliang Fang

Thyroid disorders are among the most prevalent endocrine conditions worldwide, exhibiting a rising incidence and disproportionately affecting women. In this study, we hypothesized that cosmetics may contain previously unidentified thyroid-disrupting chemicals. To evaluate this possibility, we compiled a comprehensive data set of cosmetic ingredients and developed a random forest regression-based machine learning model to predict their potential to disrupt thyroid hormone receptor β (TRβ), a critical regulator of thyroid function. From the top 40 compounds ranked by the model, 12 frequently used cosmetic ingredients were selected for experimental validation. Of these, six demonstrated measurable binding affinity toward TRβ. Notably, Vat Blue 6 (VB6), a colorant utilized in cosmetic formulations, exhibited structural characteristics potentially mimicking thyroid hormones and displayed potent TRβ binding with an affinity (Kd) as low as 0.7 μM. Subsequent in vitro assays and in vivo experiments in mice confirmed VB6’s thyroid-disrupting effects, evidenced by dose-dependent reductions in serum thyroid hormone concentrations and morphological alterations of thyroid tissue. This study highlights the efficacy of machine learning approaches in rapidly screening large chemical inventories to identify potential thyroid disruptors and underscores the critical need for further toxicological assessment of cosmetic ingredients, particularly considering their frequent and prolonged exposure among female populations.

Metatranscriptomic Insights into Aerobic Biotransformation of 6:2 Fluorotelomer Sulfonate by an Enrichment Culture under Sulfur-Limiting Conditions

Md G. Kabir,Zhiwen Tang,Xiqian Zhang,Frederic Coulon,Andreas Tiehm,Xin Song

6:2 Fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FTS), an alternative for PFOS, has become an environmental concern due to its toxicity. This study investigated the aerobic biotransformation of 6:2 FTS under sulfur-limiting conditions using an enrichment culture, SXC01. The enriched culture achieved ≥99.5% degradation of 6:2 FTS at initial concentrations of 0.5, 2.5, and 5 mg/L within 14 days, with notable corresponding defluorination ratios of 77.2%, 28%, and 16.8%, respectively. Eleven transformation products were identified and quantified over time, and the accumulation of intermediate product 6:2 FTUCA suggested that its further degradation may represent a rate-limiting step. Furthermore, the production of PFHxA is more significant than that of PFBA, suggesting the transformation of 6:2 FTUCA via 5:2 sFTOH pathway is more dominant than the other proposed alternative pathway. Metatranscriptomic analysis revealed the upregulation of key genes associated with desulfonation (e.g., ssuEADCB cluster, cysI, sbp, iscS) and defluorination (e.g., ladA, dehH, crcB, dhaA), indicating a synergistic metabolic network driving 6:2 FTS biotransformation. Active genera identified included Brucella, Rhodococcus, and Pseudoclavibacter. Moreover, the predominant Brucella anthropi SX009 was successfully isolated and shown to completely degrade 6:2 FTS within 14 days. This study provides novel insights into the mechanisms of 6:2 FTS biotransformation.

Cucurbit[6]uril-modified copper catalysts with stabilized Cu+ sites for C2+ production at ampere-level current densities

Zong Li,Kaili Ni,Yifei Wang,Yuan Rui,Miaohui Wang,Haiping Lin,Peipei Huang,Qing Li

Achieving high activity and selectivity for multi-carbon (C 2+ ) products on copper-based catalysts at ampere-level current densities is important for advancing industrial electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (eCO 2 RR). However, oxidative copper species are prone to reduction to metallic copper at high reduction potentials, causing the decline of selectivity and stability for C 2+ products. Herein, we report that Cucurbit[6]uril (CB[6])-modified copper nanoparticles promote eCO 2 RR via stabilizing Cu + sites at ampere-level current densities. The Cu-CB[6]-3 catalyst exhibited the highest C 2+ productivity with a faradaic efficiency of 72.2 ± 1.0 % at a current density of 1.0 A cm −2 , and the corresponding potential was −1.2 V vs. RHE. Detailed systematical spectroscopic analyses revealed that the main reason for boosting the C–C coupling is that the strong coordination interaction and molecular-level confinement of CO 2 and reaction intermediates of CB[6] can not only stabilize Cu + at higher current densities, but also accelerate the reaction kinetics. Simultaneously, the hydrophobic inner cavity and hydrophilic outer surface of CB[6] molecules ensure the smooth progress of eCO 2 RR while suppressing the hydrogen evolution reaction, resulting in high C 2+ selectivity and long-term stability. This work provides an approach to design highly efficient catalysts for industrial eCO 2 RR.

Tailoring the Electrolyte/Electrode Interface with 18-Crown-6 and fluoroethylene carbonate for Controlled and Uniform Lithium Deposition

Bo zhang,Liguang Qin,Jiaqing Tang,Minghe Zhu,Yunzeng Cui,Shiyu Hua,Qinyang Xue,Shangqi Sun,Chang Guo

Lithium metal is considered the top choice for anode materials due to its exceptionally high energy density (3860 mAh g-1). However, its practical use in lithium metal anodes (LMAs) is limited by significant dendrite growth and unstable interface between the anode and electrolyte. Herein, 18-crown-6 and fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) were introduced as combined additives to improve the stability of the electrode/electrolyte interface and enhance long-term cycling performance. The presence of FEC promotes the formation of a LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), which guides lithium deposition and accelerates the transport of Li+ ions. Additionally, 18-crown-6 can eliminate “hotspots” during the lithium deposition and dissolution processes, leading to superior electrochemical performance. By incorporating 1wt% 18-crown-6 and 10vol% FEC, Li||Cu half-cells achieved an impressive average coulombic efficiency of 97%, while Li||Li symmetric cells demonstrated excellent stability for over 800 hours. When paired with LiFePO4, the Li||LFP full cell retained approximately 98% of its capacity and maintained a high average coulombic efficiency of 99% after 100 cycles at 0.5 C. This research underscores the vital role of 18-crown-6 and FEC in electrolytes, revealing a fresh strategy to reduce lithium dendrite formation in lithium-based energy storage systems.

Identification of a novel ipp gene cluster responsible for 2-isopropylphenol degradation in strain Rhodococcus sp. D-6

Qian Zhu,Kangning Wei,Kaihua Pan,Gang Hu,Weihao Zhu,Yanni Huang,Changchang Wang,Qian Li,Mingliang Zhang,Jiguo Qiu,Qing Hong

Isoprocarb (IPC), a widely used carbamate insecticide, causes environmental contamination and poses risks to humans and ecosystems. Rhodococcus sp. D-6, capable of utilizing IPC as the sole growth substrate, was isolated by our lab. Strain D-6 initiates IPC degradation through ester bond hydrolysis by the hydrolase IpcH, yielding 2-isopropylphenol (IPP). In this study, the catabolic pathway of IPP in strain D-6 was elucidated, and the ipp gene cluster responsible for its degradation was predicted by transcriptomic analysis. Key genes, including a novel two-component IPP monooxygenase gene ippA1A2 and a 2-isopropylhydroquinone dioxygenase gene ippB, are responsible for the successive conversion of IPP, resulting in the ring cleavage of IPP. IppA1, a group D flavin-dependent monooxygenase, along with its reductase component IppA2, hydroxylates IPP to 2-isopropylhydroquinone using reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) as cofactors. The optimal molar ratio of IppA1 to IppA2 was 3:1. The apparent Km and kcat values of IppA1 for IPP were 60.52 ± 1.27 µM and 70.07 ± 0.85 s−1, respectively. IppB, an extradiol dioxygenase, catalyzes 2-isopropylhydroquinone ring cleavage to generate 2-isopropyl-4-hydroxymuconic semialdehyde. The apparent Km and kcat values of IppB for 2-isopropylhydroquinone were 29.07 ± 1.54 μM and 147.65 ± 1.92 s−1, respectively. This study provides critical insights into the molecular mechanisms of IPP degradation, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of IPC degradation.
