Highly Efficient Narrow-Band Green-Emitting Na3K5(Li3SiO4)8:Eu2+ Phosphor with Low Thermal Quenching

Yujia Wan,Peipei Dang,Dongjie Liu,Qianqian Zhang,Yi Wei,Hongzhou Lian,Guogang Li,Jun Lin

In the pursuit of high efficiency and wide color gamut in displays, there is still an urgent demand for high-performing narrow-band green-emitting phosphors. Inspired by a mineral UCr4C4-type structure with a highly condensed framework, a novel narrow-band green-emitting Na3K5(Li3SiO4)8:Eu2+ (NKLSO:Eu2+) phosphor is designed. This phosphor exhibits a green emission peaking at 525 nm with a full width at half-maximum (fwhm) of 43 nm. The narrow-band emission is associated with the highly symmetric sites for Eu2+. Benefiting from its high structural rigidity, this NKLSO:Eu2+ phosphor shows a very low photoluminescence (PL) thermal quenching, maintaining 96%@150 °C integrated PL intensity of the original PL intensity. Moreover, by incorporating a small amount of Al3+ into the lattice, the internal quantum efficiency (QE) and external QE of this phosphor is enhanced from 70 to ∼100% and 21 to 38%, respectively. The as-fabricated wLED-1 (InGaN chip@blue, NKLSO:1.25% Eu2+@green, KSiF6:Mn4+@red) shows a wide color gamut (106% NTSC), demonstrating vivid photographs when used in a projector. The as-fabricated wLED-4 (BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+@blue, NKLSO:1.25% Eu2+@green, CaAlSiN3:Eu2+@red) presents a low correlated color temperature of 5390 K and a high color rendering index (Ra) of 86.9. These results show that narrow-band green-emitting NKLSO:Eu2+ has potential applications in both backlight displays and solid-state lighting.

Biocatalytic membranes anchored with zeolitic imidazolate framework‑8 for enhanced trypsin loading and efficient proteolysis

Yuqing Li,Hui Ye,Luping Su,Chuan Gao,Yuzhong Zhang,Hong Li

ZIF-8 was uniformly anchored onto the membrane pores, and then trypsin was immobilized via chelation. • Asymmetric interconnected pores enhance trypsin-substrate contact and reduce fouling. • The trypsin loading per unit mass of ZIF‑8 embedded in membranes was 1.58-fold that of ZIF‑8 crystals. • EVAL/ZIF-8-TR membrane exhibits superior affinity and reaction rate. • BSA degradation efficiency was significantly improved during filtration. Proteolysis plays an important role in various fields but suffers from several limitations, including autolysis, time consumption, low efficiency, and difficulty in enzyme recovery. Biocatalytic membranes integrate enzyme immobilization and membrane separation to enhance stability and reusability, but their application in proteolysis remains challenging due to unstable enzyme loading and high mass transfer resistance. Herein, biocatalytic membranes were fabricated by embedding zeolitic imidazolate framework‑8 (ZIF‑8) into ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVAL) via the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method, followed by trypsin incorporation. The ZIF‑8 nanocrystals were anchored on membrane pores, enhancing the stability of ZIF‑8 within the porous structure, preventing aggregation, and providing abundant adsorptive sites. The asymmetric structures of the membranes were obtained by NIPS, which was beneficial for reducing fouling and provided a large surface area for enzyme loading and enhanced substrate-enzyme contact. Trypsin was loaded onto ZIF‑8 through chelation, and the high porosity and connectivity of the membrane were retained. The trypsin loading reached 0.34 mg/cm², and the loading per unit mass of ZIF‑8 embedded in membranes was 1.58-fold that of ZIF‑8 crystals. Higher affinity and reaction rate of biocatalytic membranes during dynamic filtration were obtained when compared to free trypsin from Michaelis-Menten kinetic parameters. Moreover, pressure‑driven convective transport overcame diffusion limitations, significantly improving bovine serum albumin hydrolysis efficiency. This work holds great promise for enzyme-immobilized biocatalytic membranes, and offers a green and sustainable solution for high-efficiency proteolysis. Development of pH-responsive ZIF-8-based multimetallic redox nanoreactors for ferroptosis-mediated cancer therapy

Wanmei Zhou,Zixin Wang,Chengdong Nie,Haiting Tian,Xiaoyi Duan,Lina Fu,Quan Zhou,Litao Wang,Yujie Fu

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) lacks effective tumor-selective strategies, particularly limiting ferroptosis-based therapies that depend on oxidative stress. Here, we develop a structurally reinforced ternary redox-cycling nanoreactor that integrates Zr 4 ⁺-stabilized zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) with redox-active Cu/Mn centers and ultrasmall Au nanodots, while co-loading paclitaxel (PTX) for acidic tumor microenvironment-responsive release. The Cu-Mn-Au interfaces enable rapid electron shuttling, sustaining multivalent metal cycling, accelerating Fenton-like reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, depleting GSH, and promoting lipid peroxidation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further support its self-perpetuating redox mechanism. Dual surface modification with 4 T1 cell membranes and folic acid confers homotypic and receptor-mediated targeting. Mechanistic studies reveal coordinated GPX4/SLC7A11 suppression, PTX-enhanced cell-cycle arrest, and NCOA4/HO-1-mediated ferritinophagy, collectively amplifying ferroptosis. Unlike conventional metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), this Zr-reinforced trimetallic system maintains continuous redox cycling under reductive conditions. Overall, the nanoreactor achieves sustained ROS amplification, iron-homeostasis remodeling, and enhanced tumor-selective ferroptosis, offering a promising therapeutic strategy for TNBC. Butyrophilin-like 3 and 8 tetramers clamp Vγ4Vδ1 T cell receptors for antigen-independent activation

De Dong,Huiling Li,Yuwei Zhu,Zebin Lu,Junliang Zhu,Xinyu Tian,Zhiwei Huang

BTNL3 and BTNL8, butyrophilin-like (BTNL) family receptors, are predominantly expressed on intestinal epithelial cells. The BTNL3-BTNL8 complex selectively activates human Vγ4⁺ T cells, which play critical roles in intestinal immune homeostasis and tissue damage repair. Here, we report the structure of the BTNL3-BTNL8-Vγ4Vδ1 T cell receptor (TCR) complex. The structure reveals that BTNL3-BTNL8 forms an antigen-independent tetramer, in contrast to the phosphoantigen-driven association of BTN2A1-BTN3A1. Two BTNL3-BTNL8 heterodimers clamp a head-to-head TCR homodimer to form a 2:2:2 BTNL3:BTNL8:Vγ4Vδ1 TCR complex, with the Vγ4 HV4 and CDR2 loops jointly engaging BTNL3. Structural alignment indicates that the CD1d binding site on TCR overlaps spatially with one monomer within a TCR dimer, suggesting that TCR dimerization sterically precludes simultaneous engagement of CD1d molecules. Together, our results elucidate the structural mechanism of BTNL3-BTNL8-mediated engagement and activation of Vγ4Vδ1 TCR, offering insights into γδ TCR signaling initiation.

Study on Persulfate Activation and Tetracycline Degradation by Chlorine-Doped Carbon Derived from ZIF-8

Wulue Xu,Runhua Chen,Qingwei Wang,Rongkui Su,Yuxia Song,Bo Xiao,Changqing Su

To address the inherent drawbacks of peroxymonosulfate advanced oxidation processes (PMS-AOPs), including the low efficiency of reactive species production, short radical half-lives, and restricted pollutant degradation performance, sodium salt-assisted modification was adopted to fabricate ZIF-8-derived carbon. In this study, sodium salt-assisted modification was adopted to treat ZIF-8, and the chlorine-doped derived carbon materials HNC-Tx-Cl were prepared for peroxymonosulfate activation and tetracycline degradation in water. Compared with NC-800 fabricated by direct calcination of ZIF-8 at 800 °C, HNC-800-Cl synthesized via NaCl-assisted calcination exhibits more abundant pore structures and richer carbon defects, with a specific surface area of 1115 m2/g and a high graphitic defect ratio ID/IGof 1.20. Catalytic tests reveal that HNC-800-Cl achieves 93.39% tetracycline removal within 90 min at a catalyst dosage of 0.05 g L−1and PMS concentration of 0.1 mM. The system possesses a strong anti-interference ability toward complex water environments, maintaining a favorable degradation performance in the presence of coexisting anions, natural organic matter and actual water matrices. It also exhibits outstanding cycling stability, retaining a removal rate of 80.34% after five recycling runs. Radical quenching experiments and EPR characterization verify that superoxide radical (·O2−) is the dominant reactive species during tetracycline degradation. Both the radical and non-radical pathways are clarified to illustrate the mechanisms of PMS activation and pollutant degradation. This work provides a novel catalytic material strategy to overcome the deficiencies of conventional PMS-AOPs, and offers a new perspective for structural regulation and non-metallic doping modification of ZIF-8-derived carbon materials.

AIE featured copper nanoclusters encapsulated in ZIF-8 for sensing Hg2+ and visualizing latent fingerprint

Yuan Song,Shuxin Zhang,Jiayuan Xu,Yuxuan Lv,Ruifeng Xie,Xu Han,Fang Chai

AIE featured CuNCs@ZIF-8 was constructed with blue fluorescence in aqueous solution. • The CuNCs@ZIF-8 probe detecting Hg 2+ via a turn-on response with LOD of 30 nM. • The probe enabled reliable detection of Hg 2+ in real samples. • CuNCs@ZIF-8 powder achieved the visualization of fingerprint with third level. Mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) as the most toxic heavy metal, poses serious threat to human health, environment and ecosystem. Therefore, the development of precise, convenient and portable fluorescent probe for the real-time monitoring Hg 2+ has become imperative. Here, the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) featured copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) encapsulated in a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) (CuNCs@ZIF-8) were fabricated and exhibited bright blue emission, AIE property, excellent water solubility, and stability. The emission of CuNCs enhanced more than 6 folds after encapsulating into ZIF-8 validating the AIE feature, with quantum yield of 11.49% and lifetime of 9.67 μs. The enhancement of fluorescence can be deduced originating from the restricted intramolecular motion of CuNCs confined within the rigid ZIF-8. Notably, the CuNCs@ZIF-8 exhibited highly selective response toward Hg 2+ , and the limit of detection was determined at 30 nM. Spectroscopic investigations revealed that the fluorescence enhancement was not caused by generation of new emissive species or typical charge-transfer processes. This behavior can be attributed to the combined influence of Hg 2+ -CuNCs interactions and the confinement effect of the ZIF-8 framework, suppressed non-radiative decay and promoted AIE emissions. With the excellent selectivity and stability, the CuNCs@ZIF-8 was successfully applied for monitoring Hg 2+ in real water samples with satisfactory recoveries. The robust emission of the CuNCs@ZIF-8 enabled its utilization in visualizing latent fingerprint, providing high-resolution recognition of level 3 features. In general, this work offered a feasible strategy underscoring its great potential for multiple applications with practicality and reliability in environmental monitoring and forensic analysis. ZIF-8-Functionalized Flame-Retardant and Elastic PAN Separator for High-Safety Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Hongbo Xiao,Jianxian Li,Fumiao Liu,Xiaoxin Dou,Kaiyue Li,Zhoujun Pang,Jinsheng He,Tinglan Zeng,Tianyu Zeng,Yuanzheng Luo

With a theoretical specific capacity of 1675 mAh·g–1 and an energy density approaching 2600 Wh·kg–1, lithium–sulfur (Li–S) battery chemistry occupies a unique position among emerging electrochemical energy storage technologies. The primary challenge faced by current (LSBs) is to enhance energy density while ensuring safety. To address these challenges, we developed a PAN@ZIF-8 composite separator by assembling zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) on electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers. This separator effectively reduces the shuttle effect of Li2Sn through a combination of ZIF-8’s pore sieving and chemical anchoring at the zinc sites. The PAN@ZIF-8 separators exhibit an initial discharge capability of 1154.84 mAh·g–1 at 0.2C and maintain excellent cycling stability after 100 cycles, with a Coulombic efficiency exceeding 98.3%. The PAN@ZIF-8 battery has good rate performance. Upon stepping the current density back down to 0.2C, the PAN@ZIF-8 cell recovered a reversible capacity of 686.54 mAh·g–1. Compared with PP and PAN separators, the attenuation rate is lower. Furthermore, the tensile strength of the PAN@ZIF-8 separator reaches 12 MPa and the breaking strain exceeds 15%. Compared with the PAN separator, the tensile strength deformation increases by 20%. Meanwhile, due to the high ignition point and good thermal conductivity of ZIF-8, the flame retardant performance of the separator has been enhanced. The PAN@ZIF-8 separator cannot be ignited under an alcohol flame with a temperature higher than 300 °C. This research offers an effective strategy to overcome the safety and cycling stability issues of Li–S batteries and paves the way for the development of high-performance key components for advanced Li–S batteries.

Qing Gao,Wanshuang Zhang,Yi Li,Li Lin,Wen Jin,Jiayin Qiu,Kai Xie,Xianfa Yuan

Injectable Que@ZIF-8/Gel hydrogel offers structural support and sustained quercetin release. • The hydrogel demonstrates pro-osteogenic, pro-angiogenic, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects. • It enables effective bone regeneration in rat calvarial defects, showing clinical promise. Effective bone regeneration demands biomaterials that provide mechanical support and actively orchestrate osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and immune modulation. Here, we engineered an injectable, photo-crosslinkable hydrogel by integrating quercetin-loaded Zif-8 nanoparticles within a GelMA matrix (Que@Zif-8/Gel). This composite exhibited tunable mechanics, sustained drug release, and favorable physicochemical properties. In vitro, Que@Zif-8/Gel supported BMSC adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation without cytotoxic or hemolytic effects. It also enhanced endothelial migration and tube formation, attenuated LPS-induced oxidative stress, and directed macrophages toward a reparative M2 phenotype characterized by elevated IL-10 and reduced TNF-α. In a rat calvarial defect model, Que@Zif-8/Gel treatment promoted substantial new bone formation, improved mineral density and trabecular structure, and upregulated osteogenic markers including COL-1 and OPN. In summary, these findings establish Que@Zif-8/Gel as a multifunctional platform that integrates structural reinforcement with angiogenic, antioxidant, and immunoregulatory activities, offering strong translational potential for vascularized bone regeneration.

Cerium and iron co-doped ZIF-8 as an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for water splitting

Yizhang Wang,Yu Yao,Ge Qi,Yuwei Ma,Jinxiao Bao,Shuang Li,Qingchun Wang

Developing high-efficiency, low-cost, and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for the large-scale industrialization of green hydrogen production. In this work, a novel Ce and Fe co-doped ZIF-8 electrocatalyst (Ce,Fe-ZIF-8) was successfully synthesized through a facile room-temperature ion-exchange strategy. The as-prepared catalyst retains the characteristic rhombic dodecahedral morphology of the ZIF-8 framework with a refined particle size of ∼86 nm and highly dispersed active sites. Benefiting from the synergistic electronic modulation between the rare-earth Ce and the transition metal Fe, Ce,Fe-ZIF-8 demonstrates outstanding bifunctional activity in 1.0 mol/L KOH electrolyte. Specifically, it requires overpotentials of only 242 mV (OER) and 96 mV (HER) at 10 mA/cm 2 . When utilized as both the anode and cathode for overall water splitting, the Ce,Fe-ZIF-8||Ce,Fe-ZIF-8 system achieves a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 at a remarkably low cell voltage of 1.58 V, surpassing the performance of commercial Pt/C||RuO 2 . Furthermore, the catalyst exhibits robust electrochemical stability for over 200 h of continuous operation. This work provides a facile and effective strategy for designing high-performance metal-organic framework (MOF)-based bimetallic electrocatalysts for sustainable energy conversion applications.

Fast and selective adsorption of rubidium and cesium by tannic acid-functionalized ZIF-8 composite

Zhiyue Han,Hequan Wang,Ying Liu,Haining Liu,Naicai Xu,Shaoju Bian

TA@ZIF-8 was synthesized via impregnation for selective Rb + /Cs + recovery from salt-lake brine. • Optimal TA loading (5 g L −1 ) maximizes active sites while preventing self-aggregation. • Rapid kinetics (30 min) and high selectivity for Rb + /Cs + in complex brine matrices. • Pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm indicate ion exchange–driven uptake. • >82% capacity retained after five cycles, demonstrating robust stability and reusability. Driven by the demand for rubidium (Rb) and cesium (Cs), an adsorption-based strategy employing a tannic acid (TA)-functionalized ZIF-8 composite adsorbent (TA@ZIF-8) was developed for the selective extraction of Rb + and Cs + from salt-lake brine. The incorporation of TA introduced phenolic hydroxyl groups, which significantly enhanced the affinity of ZIF-8 toward alkali metal ions, and enabled efficient adsorption of Rb + and Cs + . The material was systematically characterized by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Bath adsorption experiments demonstrated that TA@ZIF-8 achieved maximum capacities of 0.492 mmol g −1 for Rb + and 0.484 mmol g −1 for Cs + within 30 min under alkaline conditions (pH = 11), with high selectivity against competing ions (e.g., Na + , K + ). The adsorption behavior was well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, suggesting a chemisorption-controlled monolayer adsorption process. Furthermore, the adsorbent retained over 80% of its initial adsorption capacity after five adsorption–desorption cycles, demonstrating excellent reusability and structural stability. This work highlights the potential of polyphenol-functionalized metal–organic framework adsorbents for the efficient recovery of alkali metal resources. Pressure-resistant propylene/propane separation by ZIF-8 membranes decorated with polyether-block-amide copolymer

Jia Wang,Weixin Bai,Yuchen Gao,Yunpan Ying,Dahuan Liu,Qingyuan Yang

ZIF-8 is an ideal membrane material for C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation. However, its inherent framework flexibility leads to structural changes under external pressure, impairing the C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation performance. In this work, ZIF-8 membranes were decorated with a low-cost polyether-block-amide copolymer, Pebax 2533. The copolymer, containing flexible PTMO segments and rigid PA12 segments, enhanced the rigidity of the ZIF-8 framework through confinement effects and interfacial interactions. The resultant ZIF-8 P2533 membranes exhibit excellent pressure-resistant separation performance. As the transmembrane pressure was increased from 0 to 6 bar, the separation factor increased by 49%, from 152 to 227, while the C 3 H 6 flux reached 2.25 × 10 −3 mol·m −2 ·s −1 , outperforming most currently reported C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation membranes. This work demonstrates that Pebax 2533 post-modification significantly enhances the separation stability of ZIF-8 membranes under high-pressure conditions, highlighting their potential for practical C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation, although further enhancement of permeance is still desirable.

Self-Healing Epoxy Composite Coatings Enabled by a pH-Responsive Ce-ZIF-8 Nanocontainer System

Qiuli Zhang,Xuelian Li,Jiahui Liu,Linxin Yi,Chengxian Yin,Rong Wei,Lei Wu

A pH-responsive MBT/Ce-ZIF-8@TA nanocontainer system was developed to enhance the corrosion resistance of epoxy coatings. Porous Ce-ZIF-8 cores loaded with 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) were encapsulated by a functional tannic acid (TA) shell. In this system, TA acts as a “gatekeeper,” preventing premature leakage in neutral environments while triggering inhibitor release under corrosive stimuli. Release kinetics reveal a distinctive “on-demand” mechanism: while stable at neutral pH, a rapid burst release (87.84% in 24 h) occurs at pH 3.0, ensuring immediate delivery of inhibitors to passivate defects. The nanocontainers are uniformly dispersed in the epoxy matrix, significantly enhancing long-term corrosion protection. After 60 days of immersion in 3.5 wt % NaCl, the composite coating exhibits an impedance modulus 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of pure epoxy. Notably, scratched coatings demonstrate superior active self-protection, with Rc recovering from 7.76 × 109 Ω·cm2 to 1.58 × 1010 Ω·cm2 within 24 h. This enhanced performance is attributed to the synergistic combination of physical barrier reinforcement and pH-triggered chemical passivation by the released inhibitors.
