Electrochemical hydrogenation of biomass-derived substrates offers a sustainable route to valuable chemicals, yet conventional systems often struggle to simultaneously achieve high efficiency and high product purity. Here we report an electrochemical process based on a porous solid-electrolyte reactor that integrates efficient hydrogenation with intrinsic purification for biomass-derived substrates, thereby eliminating the need for supporting electrolytes. The system promotes the hydrogenation of maleic acid solution (a model unsaturated biomass substrate) into succinic acid (a model saturated biomass substrate), via a cation shielding effect while suppressing competing reactions such as hydrogen evolution. By continuously recycling the generated sodium succinate from the cathode to the middle layer, the reactor further converts it into pure succinic acid, establishing a closed-loop alkali-metal-cation shuttle that enhances selectivity and minimizes side reactions. This system delivers succinic acid Faradaic efficiencies ~ 85%, long-term operational stability (over 500 hours), and a final solution of > 98% purity, without downstream electrolyte recovery. These results highlight a scalable pathway toward cleaner, more efficient electrochemical upgrading of biomass.

Background Peptides are versatile building blocks for nanomaterials. Their self-assembled hydrogels feature tunable properties and good biocompatibility, enabling applications in cell culture, tissue engineering, and drug delivery. Peptide self-assembly arises from the synergy of multiple noncovalent interactions; among them, π–π stacking between aromatic residues is widely considered to be associated with ordered assembly in aromatic peptides. Methods Eight aromatic heptapeptides containing a “-Y-F-F-” motif were designed to examine how subtle variations in side-chain hydrophobicity correlate with self-assembly and gelation behaviors commonly attributed to aromatic stacking. Results Fluorescence and FT-IR results indicated that replacing Gly with the slightly bulkier and more hydrophobic Ala between two Phe residues is associated with more ordered networks, and only AA, GA, Fmoc-AA, and Fmoc-GA formed hydrogels under the tested conditions. And TEM/AFM and rheological measurements further revealed qualitative differences in nanofiber morphologies and sequence-dependent self-healing behavior among these gels. As a proof of concept, AA and GA gels exhibited low cytotoxicity, and their DOX-loaded gels displayed pH-responsive release. Notably, A-DOX showed a 66.91% higher cumulative release at pH 6.0 than at pH 7.4, leading to more sustained inhibition of HeLa cell proliferation compared with free DOX. Conclusion These results revealed that aromatic stacking together with an appropriate degree of hydrophobicity favors ordered peptide assembly, and that modest sequence changes can translate into distinct gel structures and drug-release functions.

Bagasse is a by-product of the sugar industry, and its combustion generates dust containing a fraction of ultrafine particles smaller than 10 nm. In this study, carbon dots (CDs) were separated and extracted from bagasse combustion dust using a simple water-based purification method. The structure and optical properties of the CDs were characterized and analyzed. The results suggest that the CDs contain graphitic or graphene-like carbon domains, together with small amounts of N, S, Cl, and Na impurities in their lattices. The shells of CDs are mainly composed of functional groups such as hydroxyl, carbonyl, carboxyl, epoxy, and amino groups. The CDs exhibited blue photoluminescence under UV excitation and blue anti-Stokes emission under 675 nm excitation. The observation of this blue emission after insertion of a long-pass filter in the excitation path supports the assignment of this emission to anti-Stokes photoluminescence. The down-conversion photoluminescence (DCPL) intensity was approximately ten times higher than that of the anti-Stokes emission. The temperature-dependent PL response suggests that these CDs may be further explored for fluorescence-based temperature sensing. In addition, preliminary cell-imaging results demonstrate their feasibility for laser confocal bioimaging. This study provides a potential strategy for the resource utilization of biomass combustion soot and the reduction of solid particulate emissions.

Shade stress reduces light availability and limits plant growth and development. Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) participates in plant stress responses, but whether H 2 S-related shade responses vary among bermudagrass accessions from different origin-site environments remains unclear. Seven Cynodon dactylon accessions collected from different sites in China were exposed to shade stress (a 50% reduction in natural sunlight intensity outdoors) and treated with NaHS (an H 2 S donor) and hypotaurine (an H 2 S scavenger). Shade stress reduced dry weight, fresh weight, net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and Fv/Fm, and increased reactive oxygen species accumulation and membrane damage. Compared with plants exposed to shade stress alone, NaHS-treated plants showed higher endogenous H 2 S content, biomass, gas-exchange parameters, and APX, POD, and SOD activities, together with lower H 2 O 2 , O 2 − , MDA, and reduced electrolyte leakage. Hypotaurine showed the opposite pattern relative to NaHS. Across the seven accessions, H₂S content, biomass, gas exchange, and antioxidant activity in NaHS-treated plants under shade were associated with collection-site climatic variables, including sunshine duration, precipitation, mean annual temperature, and altitude, along the longitudinal gradient. These results suggest that exogenous H 2 S is associated with improved shade responses in bermudagrass, and that accession-level variation in this response may be related to origin-site environmental conditions.

The synthesis of 2-aryl-2,3-dihydroquinolin-4(1 H )-ones from aromatic aldehydes and and 1-(2-aminophenyl)ethanone catalyzed by l -proline in ionic liquids was achieved for the first time. High yields up to 88.7% were achieved. Mild reaction conditions, enhanced rates, improved yields, and reagents’ reactivity, which is different from that in standard organic solvents, are the remarkable features observed in ionic liquids. In addition, the reaction mechanism was studied using computational methods, and the results were consistent with experimental findings. Graphical abstract

The physical adsorption of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) onto an anchored layer introduces disordered stacking and a tangled dipole orientation at the hole-selective layer (HSL) surface, which affects the charge-transport dynamics and interface-driven energy loss in photovoltaic devices. Herein, we develop a collaborative strategy that combines stacking-order-driven interfacial dipole flipping with a chlorine-iodine exchange, achieved by depositing bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) onto SAMs. This HSL exhibits a crystalline order characterized by dipole flipping and long-range periodic alignment in in-plane direction, driven by π-π interactions among carbazole units. It demonstrates enhanced stability against perovskite precursor solvents and thermal perturbations. The chlorine from BiOCl undergoes a chlorine-iodine exchange at the buried interface, modulating perovskite crystallization and weakening electron-phonon coupling. Our champion single-junction inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) achieve remarkable power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 27.25% (1.55 eV, 0.09 cm²) and 20.24% (1.85 eV, 0.09 cm²) with exceptional repeatability and operational stability. When employing SAMs/BiOCl as both HSL and interconnection layer, the champion perovskite-organic tandem solar cell (PO-TSC) attains an exceptional PCE of 28.14% (certified 27.84%) with steady power output of 27.86% (certified 27.59%). The device retains 90% of its initial efficiency under continuous maximum power point tracking with one-simulated-sun illumination over 600 hours.

Vortical motion naturally occurs on various scales, from galaxies to skyrmions, influencing the dynamics of mass and information transport. Yet its impact on lattice dynamics in solids is rarely explored so far, primarily owing to the strong interatomic bonds in real materials that inhibit the actual transport of their constituent species. Here we investigate the effect of vortical modes of polarized phonons on the heat insulation of solid materials using synchrotron X-ray diffuse scattering and inelastic neutron scattering along with ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. We demonstrate this vortical vibration as well as its effect on thermal insulation in CsAg 2 I 3 , where the anisotropically bonded iodine atoms form the low-lying transverse optical phonons for enhancing scattering phase space. Moreover, the vortical modes, mainly arising from the chiral symmetric operations acting on the iodine sites, induce two-dimensional short-range-ordering of atomic clusters, lead to a substantially increased phonon scattering centers with a diameter on the order of ~2 primitive cells. This eventually results in extraordinary heat insulation in the single-crystalline CsAg 2 I 3 , exhibiting a thermal conductivity as low as 0.08 W/m-K at room temperature. This strategy establishes a material design paradigm for heat insulation and unveils an unexplored avenue for phonon transport manipulation.

Fusarium graminearum is a pathogenic fungus responsible for significant plant diseases. To combat infections caused by this pathogen, we designed a pH-responsive nano-pesticide thiabendazole@MIL-101(Fe). Through systematic optimization of the loading parameters, the optimal preparation conditions were determined as follows: the thiabendazole solution concentration was 3 mg/mL, the amount of carrier used was 0.0400 g, and the loading time was 6 h. Structural characterization revealed that MIL-101(Fe) possesses a uniform octahedral structure with a smooth surface. Thiabendazole was successfully loaded into its pores without damaging the crystal structure of MIL-101(Fe). Regarding release behavior, thiabendazole@MIL-101(Fe) exhibited significant pH-responsive characteristics. After 238 h, the cumulative release rate of thiabendazole reached 74.08% at pH = 5.0, while the cumulative release rates at pH = 7.0 and 9.0 were 62.17% and 57.22%, respectively. The release kinetics study showed that the release process of thiabendazole@MIL-101(Fe) followed a first-order model. Furthermore, Ritger-Peppas model fitting suggested that the release mechanism is consistent with Fickian diffusion across pH = 5.0, 7.0, and 9.0. The prepared thiabendazole@MIL-101(Fe) displayed antibacterial activity comparable to that of conventional SC Thi and exhibited no adverse effects on wheat seed germination or seedling growth. This study provides new ideas and methods for the development of efficient and environmentally friendly nano-pesticides.

Perovskite-structured Li 0.33 La 0.56 TiO 3 (LLTO) ceramic fillers are widely used for their low cost and environmental friendliness, yet their poor uniform dispersion in polymer matrices and inadequate interfacial compatibility between phases still limit performance. This study fabricated PDA@LLTO/PVDF-HFP composite electrolytes via solution casting, by modifying LLTO with a biodegradable polydopamine (PDA) coating. Dopamine undergoes oxidative self-polymerization on LLTO surfaces to form a PDA layer, whose excellent adhesion ensures firm binding to the LLTO surfaces, reducing filler surface energy and promoting uniform dispersion. Meanwhile, PDA’s phenolic hydroxyl and amino groups interact with PVDF-HFP’s fluorine and carbonyl groups via hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, and physical entanglement, forming a strong interface. PDA reduces interfacial gaps and defects by acting as a “molecular bridge” to improve adhesion between the two phases. Results show the 2.4 wt%-PDA@LLTO/PVDF-HFP composite exhibits well-balanced electrochemical performance: an ionic conductivity of 2.37 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 25 °C, an interfacial impedance reduced from 367 to 167 Ω, a lithium-ion migration number of 0.81, and an electrochemical stability window expanded to 4.88 V, The critical current density reaches 2.297 mA/cm 2 . The assembled solid-state full batteries deliver an initial discharge capacity of 168.59 mAh/g at 0.5 C, retaining 148.80 mAh/g (88.3% capacity retention) after 180 cycles, with Coulombic efficiency stabilized at 99.6% and significantly improved thermal stability. This work provides new insights for developing high-performance all-solid-state electrolytes, which hold promising applications.

Sutural distraction osteogenesis (SDO) involves the induction of new bone formation in the suture region through external distraction, widely employed for treating craniomaxillofacial deformities such as craniosynostosis and maxillary transverse hypoplasia. Nonetheless, there remains a deficiency in effective and minimally invasive therapeutic approaches to shorten the treatment duration and minimize the risk of relapse. Prussian blue (PB) nanozymes exhibit extensive biological applications due to their superior biocompatibility and enzyme-like activity. Incorporating cerium (Ce), which possesses REDOX and osteopromoting properties, into Prussian blue nanozymes not only preserves its excellent biosafety but also enhances stem cell recruitment and bidirectional regulation of osteogenesis promotion and osteoclast inhibition. Moreover, the bidirectional regulatory effects of cerium-doped prussian blue (CePB) nanozymes are significantly amplified under mechanical tension conditions. ANANSE (Analysis Algorithm for Networks Specified by Enhancers) analysis integrating RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, and CUT&Tag data identified Lhx2 as a critical transcription factor involved in regulating osteogenic differentiation of suture‑derived stem cells (SuSCs) mediated by CePB nanozymes, which was further validated in vitro. In summary, CePB nanozymes offer a novel adjuvant therapy for craniomaxillofacial suture distraction osteogenesis. This study provides the first in-depth, comprehensive, and reliable investigation into how nanozymes regulate stem cell fate through the integration of transcriptome analysis and epigenetic sequencing.

A series of perovskite-type LaMnO 3 (LMO) electrocatalysts (LMO-4, LMO-6, and LMO-8) with different oxygen contents (δ) has been successfully prepared by regulating the sintering temperature and time under nitrogen vs. air atmosphere sintered sample (LMO-0). We investigated the effects of microstructural features such as oxygen vacancies, adsorbed oxygen (O ads ), δ value, Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ ratio, and Mn-O bond lengths on their magnetic performance and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity and its intrinsic correlation mechanism. The nitrogen induces crystal structure transition from tripartite phase (LMO-0) to orthorhombic phase and increases the adsorbed oxygen (O ads ) content with the variation of annealing conditions. LMO-0 with a high δ-value and high Mn 4+ ratio exhibits a predominantly Mn 3+ -O-Mn 4+ ferromagnetic double-exchange interaction. Among the samples, LMO-0 exhibits the optimal OER activity with the lowest apparent kinetic slope and charge transfer resistance, which is attributed to its highest Mn 4+ ratio, oxygen vacancy content, and most significant electrochemically active area.

Aerogels are attractive for catalytic applications due to their ultra-low density and high surface area. Here, we prepare a novel composite aerogel integrating chitosan, cellulose, carbon nanofibers, and micron-sized Co 2 B@ZIF-67 catalyst via sol-gel and freeze-drying methods. The free-standing Co 2 B@e-ZIF-67 exhibits a hydrogen generation rate of 13,701.1 mL min⁻ 1 g⁻ 1 , attributed to the uniform immobilization of Co 2 B active species within the ZIF-67 framework, which prevents agglomeration and maximizes active site exposure. When embedded in the aerogel, the catalyst achieves a hydrogen generation rate of 9,811.7 mL min⁻ 1 g⁻ 1 , with an active site exposure efficiency of 71.7% and a low mass loss of 7.9% after reaction. The aerogel’s chemically crosslinked network ensures uniform catalyst dispersion and structural stability. Moreover, the use of natural polysaccharides (chitosan and cellulose) as the aerogel skeleton provides inherent biodegradability and recyclability, making this system a promising candidate for sustainable catalytic hydrogen production.
