Multifunctional SrFeO3-δ@Al composite macrocapsules for synergistic high-temperature thermal storage and oxygen separation

Yeku Wang,Shengxin Li,Deqiu Zou,Nan Sheng,Chunyu Zhu

Developing high-performance materials for integrated thermal energy storage and oxygen production is critical for advancing sustainable energy systems. Aluminum as heat storage phase change materials has a high latent heat storage density, but suffering from the leakage problems. The SrFeO 3− δ (SFO) oxygen carrier exhibits exceptional redox activity for air separation with a high reduction enthalpy of 96 kJ/mol. In this study, we report a multifunctional composite macrocapsules composed of SFO shell and metallic aluminum core, engineered to synergistically combine thermochemical, latent, and sensible heat storage with air separation capabilities. The composite macrocapsule has a high heat storage capacity of 435.9 J/g at a temperature duration of 873 K to 1073 K and an oxygen storage capacity of 1.69 wt%. After conducting 50th thermal cycles in air for the composite macrocapsules, the samples remain unbroken and the oxygen absorption/release and heat storage capacities remain stable. The synergy between the thermochemical properties of SFO and the phase change heat storage of aluminum enables dual functionality, i.e., efficient high-temperature heat storage and on-demand air separation for chemical looping applications. This work provides a scalable paradigm for multifunctional energy materials, bridging the gap between thermal management and carbon neutral technologies.

High-Energy SWCNT Cathode for Aqueous Al-Ion Battery Boosted by Multi-Ion Intercalation Chemistry

Wending Pan,Yan Zhao,Jianjun Mao,Yifei Wang,Xiaolong Zhao,Kee Wah Leong,Shijing Luo,Xinhua Liu,Huizhi Wang,Jin Xuan,Shichun Yang,Yue Chen,Dennis Y. C. Leung

The aqueous Al-ion battery has achieved great progress in recent years. It now shows comparable performance to that of even non-aqueous Al-ion batteries. However, it also shows relatively low energy output and there is limited general understanding of the mechanism behind this restriction to its practical application. Thus, the development of a high-performance cathode material is in great demand. Herein, a high-capacity single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) is developed as a cathode for the water-in-salt electrolyte-based aqueous Al-ion battery, which provides an ultra-high specific capacity of 790 mAh g –1 ( based on the mass of SWCNT ) at a high current density of 5 A g –1 even after 1000 cycles. Moreover, the SWCNT/Al battery shows a complicated multi-ion intercalation mechanism, where AlCl 4 – , Cl – , Al 3+ , and H + can function at the same time, improving the battery output. Beyond recently revealed H + and metal ion co-intercalation, the Cl-assisted intercalation of Al 3+ ions mechanism is also studied by experimental characterization and modeling for the first time, which significantly boosts the Al 3+ storage capacity. This multi-ion intercalation mechanism combines the high-voltage anion deintercalation and the high-capacity cation intercalation, and thus, benefits the development and application of high-energy Al-ion batteries in the future.

Enhanced mechanical and wave-absorption properties of SiC–Si3N4–FeSi porous ceramics by introducing Al

Huihui Zhang,Guocheng Ma,Haibo Wu,Ming Yuan,Xuejian Liu,Zhengren Huang

SiC-based porous ceramic wave-absorbing materials have attracted much attention due to their excellent properties such as low density, high-temperature resistance, and oxidation resistance. In this work, the impedance matching of SiC ceramics is improved by introducing Si 3 N 4 wave-transparent phase, and the dielectric loss capability of SiC ceramics is enhanced by introducing FeSi wave loss phase. To achieve a balance between impedance matching and absorption loss in porous ceramics, different molar contents of Al were introduced into FeSi to tailor electromagnetic parameters. The effects of introducing FeAl x Si 1− x on the phase composition, microstructure, dielectric loss, and microwave absorption mechanism of SiC–Si 3 N 4 porous ceramics were systematically investigated. When FeAl 0.25 Si 0.75 is added, the minimum reflection loss of the porous ceramics is as low as −58.02 dB, and the flexural strength is as high as 87.23 MPa. The presence of Al promotes the transformation of the Si 3 N 4 crystal and the generation of Al 2 O 3 . The introduction of FeAl 0.25 Si 0.75 into SiC–Si 3 N 4 has constructed “inductor–capacitor–resistance” microcircuit, which enhances polarization loss, conductivity loss, and magnetic loss, and realized the double enhancement of the mechanical and wave-absorbing properties of porous ceramics.

Enhanced Hydrodeoxygenation performance through novel Al-Doped radial channel Silica-Supported Carbon-Encapsulated nickel catalysts

Bolong Jiang,Yuhan Zhang,Huan Wang,Kun Liu,Nan Jiang,Jiayou Li,Hua Song,Yanguang Chen

Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) plays a crucial role in upgrading pyrolysis-oil derived from biomass. Here we describe a method for fabricating a carbon-encapsulated nickel metal–acid bifunctional catalyst (Ni@C/RCS-Al) supported on aluminum-doped radial channel silica (RCS-Al). This catalyst exhibits a large surface area and highly dispersed accessible active sites, achieved through a combination of salicylate- and MOF-assisted strategies. The RCS-Al was prepared by a one-pot salicylate-assisted hydrothermal method in an aqueous phase containing an Al source, which is simple, has a high yield, and saves time. The results show that Ni@C/RCS-Al displays a well-defined radial channel pore structure with a mesopore diameter of 31.1 nm, which can significantly increase the number of accessible active sites and accelerate mass transfer. The MOF-assisted strategy leads to the formation of highly dispersed smaller carbon-encapsulated nickel nanoparticle active sites, and Al doping contributes to the adjustable acid sites, demonstrating that Ni@C/RCS-Al is a metal–acid bifunctional catalyst. Importantly, the kinetics study revealed a high reaction constant for the constructed Ni@C/RCS-Al catalyst. Ni@C/RCS-Al demonstrates remarkable performance in HDO, achieving complete m -cresol conversion and 100 % selectivity to the target product methylcyclohexane within a brief period of 75 min (T = 250 °C p = 2 MPa, m-cresol/catalyst (g) = 7.5). This exceptional performance stems from its radial channel pore structure and optimization of metal–acid sites. The thin carbon layer on the Ni surface contributes to its superior stability and water resistance, as verified by an experimental study and DFT calculations. This work opens up a new idea for the application of radial channel silica-supported catalysts in various reactions.

Enhanced antibacterial activity of Al-doped CuS incorporated PVA nanofiber films: Photothermal and photodynamic perspectives

Yingfeng Wang,Kaizhun Li,Huiqin Zhang,Xun Zhang,Wei Li,Ming Huang,Xiaojuan Li,Shumin Zhang

Antibiotic resistance poses a major challenge to modern healthcare and requires innovative microbial control strategies. Here, we report a novel method for integrating aluminum-doped copper sulfide (CuS@Al) microspheres into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix by electrospinning to obtain multifunctional nanofiber membranes with both photothermal and photodynamic antimicrobial properties (PVA-CuS@Al). Based on the rational design of Al doping to form structural defects on CuS microspheres, the light absorption and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were significantly enhanced. Under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation (808 nm, 2.0 W/cm²), PVA-CuS@Al with 5 wt% CuS@Al achieved rapid temperature rise from 25 °C to 181 °C within 15 s, and complete inactivation of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was achieved within 10 min by photothermal ablation. In addition, under simulated sunlight, the membrane effectively generates ROS, achieving 100 % bacterial inhibition through photodynamic effects. The performance of the material goes beyond previous studies by combining dual antibacterial mechanisms on a single platform, reducing the required additive concentration (3 wt% CuS@Al), while maintaining biocompatibility and blood compatibility. This work introduces the development strategy of a new generation of antibacterial wound dressing with high efficiency and low cytotoxicity.

Sb doped Al-Si/AlN composite phase change material with improved thermal conductivity and reliability

Shuhui Chen,Jinjie Mo,Ziye Ling,Zhengguo Zhang,Xiaoming Fang

The propensity for leaks in high-temperature molten alloys greatly restricts their extensive use in storing high-temperature thermal energy. In tackling this matter, the research concentrates on Al-Si/AlN composite phase change materials (PCMs), incorporating the modifier Sb to significantly improve their heat conduction and thermal steadiness. The results reveal that incorporating Sb alters the Si phase from a bulk form to an elongated one, simultaneously triggering the creation of an Al-Si@Al 2 O 3 core-shell configuration. This structural optimization reduces free electron scattering and extends the mean free path of electrons, thereby improving the thermal conductivity of the material. It was established that the ideal fraction of Sb mass is 0.6 %, where the thermal conductivity of the Sb-altered Al-Si/AlN composite PCMs attains 49.5 W/(m·K), marking a 15.2 % enhancement over the original Al-Si/AlN composite PCMs, with a latent heat of 351.5 kJ/kg. Additionally, the creation of the Al 2 O 3 shell led to the altered materials showing remarkable thermal stability across 200 high-temperature thermal cycles, resulting in less than a 4 % decrease in latent heat post-cycle and no leakage detected. The study offers not just an innovative approach for creating advanced Al-Si/AlN composite PCMs but also broadens their use in storing thermal energy at high temperatures.

Activation of Peroxymonosulfate by Co–Al-LDH@PU Membrane for Efficient Removal of Tetracycline Hydrochloride

Liu Xilin,Yang Fuwei,Yao Zhiqian,Wang Xuan,Liu Pengfei,Li Jiayin,Zhou Hu

Immobilizing the activator on the carrier is an effective strategy to solve the difficult recovery and secondary pollution of activator in advanced oxidation process. In this study, cobalt–aluminum-layered double hydroxide (activator) was immobilized on a PU membrane carrier (Co–Al-LDH@PU membrane) by a hydrothermal in situ growth technique to form a recyclable peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator. The as-prepared Co–Al-LDH@PU membrane exhibited an excellent ability to activate PMS for the removal of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). 97.20% of TC (30 mg L −1 ) was eliminated with Co–Al-LDH@PU membrane (3 × 3 cm 2 ) and 1.6 mM PMS at pH 5.5 in 30 min. Singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was verified as dominant reactive oxygen species responsible for TC removal via quenching tests. Mechanism investigation suggested that the redox cycle of Co 2+ /Co 3+ on the surface of Co–Al-LDH@PU membrane was crucial for PMS activation. Meanwhile, Co–Al-LDH@PU membrane displayed the ideal reusability and versatility.

Preparation of Al-rich hierarchical zeolites by conventional alkali treatment: Defects as mesopore directing agents

Xingyang Li,Dandan Zhang,Quanwei Zheng,Jiakui Chang,Xuan Liu,Renchun Yang,Meng Pan

In industry, it is highly desired to prepare Al-rich hierarchical zeolites by conventional alkali treatment without the use of costly chemical and special process. Here we provide an alternative strategy in which crystal defects are employed as mesopore directing agents. The effective elimination of the intracrystalline defects induces the generation of mesoporous structure in the alkali treatment process. Thus, the limitation originating from the framework Si/Al ratio of parent zeolite is circumvented. This strategy holds all merits of the conventional alkali treatment approach, which is industrially unfavorable. As an example, the Al-rich hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites with very low Si/Al ratios were successfully prepared. The obtained Al-rich hierarchical zeolites were characterized by XRD, XRF, SEM, TEM, N 2 adsorption-desorption, in-situ IR, MAS NMR and NH 3 -TPD. The results showed that Si/Al ratios of the prepared hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites were around 10 and the increases of external surface area and mesoporous volume were up to 2.6 and 3.7 times respectively in comparison with parent zeolite. Moreover, the constructed mesopores were interconnected open channels. In the catalytic cracking of 1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene, the Al-rich hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites exhibited an excellent performance because of the improved diffusion of reactant and product.

Optimizing high-entropy FeCoCuMoMOOH (M=Mn, Ni, Al) as efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction

Zhang Wen-hua,Yi Bing,He Wen-xin,Ma Xiu-jia,Jia Yun-bo,Li Shi-qi,Guo Cai-wen,Wang Xue-wei

Industrial catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of water electrolysis are key to realizing green and clean hydrogen production. In this study, multivariate transition metal hydroxide catalysts with high-entropy structure were prepared, which exhibited optimized electrocatalytic performance and stability for water splitting in alkaline media. Using copper foam as the substrate, samples are obtained through the step-by-step combination and tuning of the multi-components. The electrochemical performance test results show that the optimized FeCoCuMoMnOOH catalyst exhibits an exceptional catalytic effect for the OER with an overpotential of 227 mV at a current density of 100 mA/cm 2 , much superior to the performance of FeCoCuOOH and FeCoCuMoOOH. In the 30-h timed current method test, the performance of the FeCoCuMoMnOOH catalyst is essentially non-decaying and shows good stability. The XPS results indicate that the metal components are stably combined to exist as a mixture of metal phases in the samples, which exerts a beneficial synergistic effect and offers more active sites. Meanwhile, Mn as an electron donor can increase the electron density and optimize the electron transport structure, which is conducive to the electrochemical reaction rate. This work sheds light on presenting an effective strategy for constructing multi-element high-entropy combinations with modulated component ratios, which provides a new idea for designing efficient and stable transition metal hydroxyl oxide catalysts. Multiscale mechanisms of dissolved Li⁺, Al³⁺, and Si⁴⁺ in enhancing flotation of fine-grained lepidolite

Zheyi Zhang,Qian Wei,Fen Jiao

The efficient recovery of fine-grained lepidolite remains a critical challenge in lithium resource extraction. This study proposes a flotation method leveraging mineral dissolution, focusing on the action mechanisms of Li⁺, Al³⁺, and Si⁴⁺ ions released from lepidolite and feldspar surfaces in alkaline environments. Flotation tests confirm that dissolved ions increase the flotation recovery of lepidolite from 45.24 % to 81.34 %. Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP), Zeta potential, laser particle size measurement, and high-speed photography demonstrate that selectively released ions induce selective particle aggregation by regulating mineral surface potentials, thereby increasing the apparent particle size. Surface tension and foam property tests show that dissolved ions reduce the surface tension of the collector solution, optimize foam stability, and enhance mineralization efficiency. This study elucidates the pivotal role of dissolved ions in fine-grained lepidolite flotation and provides new insights into interface regulation strategies for the flotation of fine silicate minerals.

Cost-Effective Rechargeable Magnesium Battery Based on a Fluorinated Alkoxyaluminate Electrolyte and a Carbonyl Polymer Cathode

Zijun Hu,Liang Huang,Xiaotang Gan,Yan Han,Jun Chu,Zhiping Song

Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) are one of the most promising “post-lithium” battery technologies, but the electrochemical performance is still far from expectation due to the sluggish reaction kinetics of divalent Mg2+ ions. Herein, we report a low-cost, high-performance Mg–organic battery based on the combination of a fluorinated alkoxyaluminate electrolyte and a carbonyl polymer cathode material. First, the one-pot synthesized Mg[Al(HFIP)4]2 (HFIP = hexafluoro-2-propanol) is proved superior to the Mg[B(HFIP)4]2 analogue in both Mg anode compatibility and electrochemical window, as the electrolyte salt in the G2–DME (G2 = diethylene glycol dimethyl ether; DME = 1,2-dimethoxyethane) mixture solvent. Second, a simple wet grinding method is proposed to effectively improve the dispersion uniformity of the poly(benzoquinone-pyrrole) (PBQPy) active material in the cathode. Third, the elaborate Mg–PBQPy battery exhibits superior electrochemical performance within 0.4–3.0 V, including a high reversible capacity of 197 mA h g–1, a high average discharge voltage of 1.6 V, and a high capacity retention of 71% after 500 cycles. Finally, based on various electrochemical analysis and ex situ characterization results, we propose a general microscopic structure evolution model to reveal the electrochemical behaviors of carbonyl polymer cathode in RMBs, including the swelling of polymer active material, trapping of Mg2+ ions, and reversible redox reaction.

Implanting an electrolyte additive on a single crystal Ni-rich cathode surface for improved cycleability and safety

Yongkang Han,Jinmei Xu,Wei Wang,Fu Long,Qunting Qu,Yan Wang,Honghe Zheng

Interfacial modification is one of the most important technologies to improve the overall electrochemical properties of Ni-rich cathodes. Herein, a novel strategy of in situ planting of an electrolyte film-forming additive on a single crystal NCM811 surface is proposed by consuming the residual lithium to develop a functional Al(Li)BOB nano-layer. Different from traditional physical coating, this approach cleverly consumed the undesirable residual lithium on the NCM811 surface. The in situ grown 30–50 nm Al(Li)BOB layer on the single crystal NCM811 cathode surface contributes to its much enhanced electrochemical performances. At a high operating voltage (charge voltage limit of 4.5 V vs. Li/Li+), the capacity retention is greatly increased from 57.0% to 83.5% after 295 cycles. Meanwhile, the incorporation of aluminum is effective in improving the thermal stability of the Ni-rich cathode. The novel interfacial strategy by in situ implanting of an electrolyte additive is of important significance for solving the critical interfacial issue for Ni-rich cathode materials.
