Spinel oxides are promising electrocatalysts whose activity can be tuned by elemental composition, yet understanding multicomponent synergy remains challenging. Herein, a Spinel-type medium-entropy CoFeCrNiO 4 electrocatalyst is developed, and a Cr-Ni synergistic strategy is proposed to regulate dynamic surface reconstruction during OER. The catalyst exhibits an overpotential of 263.4 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and 365 mV at 300 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, with a low Tafel slope of 37.12 mV dec −1 . It also shows excellent stability, with only 2.78% overpotential decay after 24 h operation. In-situ characterization reveals that the Cr-Ni interaction promotes the formation of active oxyhydroxide species during reconstruction. This work provides insights into synergy-driven activity enhancement and offers guidance for the design of high-performance spinel OER catalysts.

p-Nitrophenol (p-NP) is a toxic and persistent pollutant commonly found in industrial wastewater, necessitating efficient and economically viable treatment strategies. In this work, we develop a low-cost and high-performance catalyst consisting of Fe-Cu-Cr mixed metal oxides supported on activated carbon (AC), synthesized through a simple impregnation-calcination method and applied for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation.Systematic optimization of preparation parameters revealed that HCl pretreatment of activated carbon, a ternary Fe-Cu-Cr composition, a 20 wt% metal loading, and calcination at 600 °C yield the highest catalytic activity, achieving p-NP degradation with Ct/C₀ ≈ 0.25 after 4 h. Notably, the total treatment cost can be maintained below 30 CNY per ton of wastewater, demonstrating a substantial economic advantage over reported catalytic systems. Mechanistic studies show that p-NP degradation follows a synergistic adsorption-catalysis pathway, wherein activated carbon enriches p-NP at the catalyst surface and multivalent metal oxides efficiently activate PMS to generate reactive oxygen species, primarily •OH. This work introduces a practical, scalable, and cost-effective catalyst design using earth-abundant metals, offering a promising avenue

In order to develop an efficient, environmentally friendly heavy metal ions adsorbent, the amino-modified expanded vermiculite-supported nano zero-valent iron (nZVI@PEI/EVMT) was prepared by using polyethyleneimine (PEI) as the functional reagent and expanded vermiculite (EVMT) as the carrier. The characterization results of nZVI@PEI/EVMT confirm that the PEI modification did not destroy the crystal configuration of EVMT, and when nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) was successfully loaded onto the PEI/EVMT surface, the value of saturation magnetic field was 41.5 emu/g, which could be separated from solution with magnet. The performance of Cr(VI) adsorption onto nZVI@PEI/EVMT was studied, showing that the ideal mass ratio for nZVI@PEI/EVMT was 1:1, and the removal capacity was largest when solution pH was 2. After four adsorption–desorption cycles, the adsorption amounts remained 40.1 mg/g. The Cr(VI) adsorption onto nZVI@PEI/EVMT was more consistent with a pseudo-second-order kinetics equation. Isotherm adsorption data accord with the Langmuir model, which suggests that the adsorption was the monolayer, the maximum adsorption amount was 116.2 mg/g at 30 °C and pH 2, and the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic. It was inferred that the adsorption mechanisms included electrostatic attraction, reduction, chemical complexation, and co-precipitation.

Ionic contaminants, especially heavy metal ions, are a significant challenge for ensuring the safety and quality of drinking water. Electrosorption and membrane separation are effective technologies to remove ionic contaminants; however, the constant electricity demand and lack of selectivity limit their further application. In this study, a low-pressure membrane with an electrically tuning surface charge was developed for the selective and efficient removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from water. Poly(vinyl ferrocene) (PVF) was used to fabricate an electrically responsive interface, and an activated carbon felt (ACF) was applied as a conductive substrate. Fluorescence characterization was then used to further highlight its redox properties and the tunability of its surface charge. The activated PVF-based electro-responsive adsorptive membrane (PERAM) showed an excellent adsorption capacity and selectivity for Cr(VI) during single-pass filtration. Notably, regeneration was achieved by the application of a reversed electric potential without the need for additional chemical additives. The Cr(VI) effluent concentration was reduced to <0.05 mg/L at a high flux of 424 L/m 2 ·h, and it had a treatment capacity of greater than 5140 L/m 2 due to effective activation and regeneration. The electrostatic force changes between the PVF and Cr(VI) at different potentials was the key mechanism that allowed for the rapidly reversible adsorption-desorption of Cr(VI) according to the results of the density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations.

The aggregation and separation of magnetic biochar (MBC) are the bottlenecks in its application for the removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from aquatic media. To solve this problem, MBC and Fe(II)–sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel were combined to form SA–Fe(II)–MBC beads (SA–Fe–C), which were used for Cr(VI) removal and immobilization from aqueous solutions. SEM and XPS revealed that the 3D network structure of SA–Fe(II) hydrogel effectively prevented the aggregation of MBC. The experimental maximum Cr(VI) removal capacity of SA–Fe–C beads was 30.03 mg/g at pH 4. The spontaneous process of Cr(VI) removal by SA–Fe–C beads was best described by a pseudo-second-order model and dominated by chemical adsorption. Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure extraction showed that SA–Fe–C beads exhibited excellent immobilization capacity for Cr. The mechanism whereby SA–Fe–C beads removed and immobilized Cr(VI) from solution was found to involve: (1) adsorption, (2) reduction of Cr(VI) to trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) by Fe(II) and hydroxyl groups, and (3) co-precipitation of Cr(III) with Fe(II) to form chromite. In addition, the beads demonstrated excellent regeneration capability and reusability, showing promising potential for heavy metal removal from contaminated water.

The escalating issue of water pollution driven by rapid industrialization necessitates the development of advanced remediation technologies. In this study, a novel method for producing chromium (Cr(VI)) ion-imprinted biochar (Cr(VI)-IIP-PEI@NBC) from wheat residue was proposed. After acid-oxidative modifications, polyethyleneimine (PEI) and glutaraldehyde (GA) were employed as the functional monomer and crosslinker, respectively, to enhance the biochar’s selectivity and adsorption capacity. Under optimized conditions (pH 2.0, 55 °C), the adsorbent achieved a maximum Cr(VI) uptake of 212.63 mg/g, which was 2.3 times higher than that of the non-imprinted biochar. The material exhibited exceptional specificity (99.64%) for Cr(VI) and maintained >80% adsorption efficiency after five regeneration cycles, demonstrating excellent reusability. Comprehensive structural characterization via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), Brunner–Emmet–Teller measurements (BET), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) confirmed successful Cr(VI) imprinting in the biochar and its high thermal stability and mesoporous architecture, elucidating the mechanisms behind its superior performance. This study presents a sustainable and high-performance adsorbent for the efficient treatment of chromium-contaminated wastewater, with significant potential for industrial applications.

Fe-Cr alloys were fabricated using powder metallurgy (PM) with varying additions of ZrC (0–1.5 wt%) to investigate the influence on microstructure and mechanical properties. The resulting alloys exhibited a bimodal grain structure with dispersed nano-oxides (TaO, ZrO 2 ) and carbides (ZrC). The alloy containing 1.5 wt% ZrC demonstrated the most favourable combination of properties, achieving a yield strength of 1373 MPa and an elongation of 11.9 % at room temperature, which is attributed to synergistic dispersion strengthening. At 700°C, this alloy retained a yield strength of 470 MPa, surpassing that of many oxide dispersion-strengthened alloys. Incorporating ZrC refined the microstructure, promoted phase transformations, and inhibited the formation of coarse oxides, enhancing strength and ductility.

The high reactivity of Fe(0) with Cr(VI) makes it the best choice for Cr(VI) removal. Interstitial compound Fe3C was produced during the carbothermic reduction of mesoporous phenolic resin/ferric ions to form Fe(0)/Fe3C nanoparticles embedded in mesoporous carbon (Fe(0)/Fe3C@MesoC). Fe3C accelerates the electrochemical corrosion process of α-Fe(0) in solution, and the positive/negative equipotential interface that is formed by iron–carbon (Fe–C) microelectrolysis of Fe(0)/Fe3C@MesoC induces the capture of Cr(VI) anions and Cr(III) cations as a result of this process. Cr(VI) was completely reduced to Cr(III) by the Fe(0)/Fe3C@MesoC catalyst with a high electron efficiency (40.5%) relative to nanosized zero-valent iron (1.9%) and Fe@MesoC (32.7%). Surface ferrous ions are the principal reactive species responsible for Cr(VI) reduction (at least 64%); Fe(0)/Fe3C and undetectable surface ferrous ions account for a small part of Cr(VI) reduction (around 28%), and only 8% of Cr(VI) ions are reduced by active hydrogen (H*). The proposed structure of Fe(0)/Fe3C@MesoC provides new insight into iron–carbon material preparation and application in in situ chemical reduction.

Herein, a Cr-doped Ni-Cu/(NiOH) 2 coating supported on nickel foam (Ni-Cu-Cr/NF) was fabricated via a facile one-step electrodeposition strategy and employed as an efficient electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. In 1 M NaOH, Ni–Cu–Cr/NF requires an overpotential of 30 mV to reach a current density of − 10 mA cm⁻ 2 and exhibits a Tafel slope of 55 mV dec⁻ 1 . These electrochemical results are associated with the combined effects of the multicomponent composition and an increased electrochemically active surface area (ECSA). The ECSA of Ni–Cu–Cr/NF is approximately 23.6 times that of Ni–Cu/NF. In addition, the catalyst maintains stable operation for 60 h during continuous electrolysis. This work presents a simple preparation method for the novel Ni-Cu-Cr/NF catalyst and systematically investigates the impact of Cr doping on enhancing catalytic performance, providing an effective strategy for the development of nickel-based alloy electrocatalysts. The incorporation of polyoxometalates (POMs) in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with host-guest structure have proven to be effective strategy to rational design of heterogeneous catalysis. In this study, the Keggin-type POM@MIL-101(Cr) composite catalysts (PMo 12 , PW 12 and SiW 12 ) are synthesized for nitrogen fixation reaction without sacrificial agents at room temperature in the first time. The SiW 12 molecules are encapsulated in smaller cavities of MIL-101(Cr) by solvothermal method and in larger cavities by impregnation method, respectively. Solvothermal synthesized catalyst has a performance of 75.56 μmol·h −1 ·g -1 cat and TOF value of 1.95 h −1 , which are about 10 and 88 times than that of Na 4 SiW 12 O 40 . The excellent performance is ascribed to the synergistic effect of SiW 12 and MIL-101(Cr). The MIL-101(Cr) adsorbs a large amount of N 2 and generates sufficiently photogenerated electrons under sunlight irradiation, and electrons quickly transfer to the SiW 12 through hydrogen bonds. Moreover, the agglomeration effect of the homogeneous catalyst SiW 12 is weakened due to encapsulation with more exposed active sites. This work provides a feasible route to design and synthesize nanocomposite materials with exceptional performance for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation.

Chromium-forming metallic interconnectors (ICs) are generally used to assemble protonic ceramic fuel cell stacks (PCFCs). Thus, Cr poisoning is a potential threat to the performance and stability of PCFCs. The effects of Cr deposit and poisoning on the performance and stability of a typical BaCo0.8(Zr0.8Y0.2)0.2O3-δ(BCZY) air electrode after polarization with a current density of 0.2 A cm−2for 50 h are investigated. It is found that the BCZY and Cr2O3powder are able to react even at 400 °C. In addition, Cr poisoning affects the chemical stability of BCZY. The humidification of air accelerates the Cr deposition and poisoning of BCZY by promoting the surface segregation of Ba and Cr evaporation from IC, and the main phase of the surface deposit is BaCrO4. When the air humidity increases from 3% to 50%, the deposit layer depth increases from 0.949 μm to 2.870 μm. For the fuel cell exposed to air with a relative humidity of 3% and 50%, the polarization resistance (Rp) increases by 19.9% and 53.3%, while the ohmic resistance (RΩ) increases by 3.5% and 17.1%, respectively. This study lays the foundation for further design of Cr-tolerant air electrodes and the selection of working conditions.

To efficiently treat hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) wastewater, K2FeO4 was used to remove and reduce Cr(VI) in presence of Mn(II) in this paper. Batch removal experiments were carried out to study the effect of Fe/Mn molar ratios, initial pH, in-situ and ex-situ and co-existing ions on Cr(VI) removal. The results showed the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) was 97.7% for the initial Cr(VI) concentration of 10.0 mg/L at Fe/Mn molar ratio of 2:3 and initial pH 8.0. Meanwhile, the high removal efficiency of Cr(VI) had been maintained throughout the pH range of 3.0–8.0 in the experimental study. Moreover, the removal process was relatively stable regardless of in-situ and ex-situ, and co-existing ions such as Ca2+ and low concentration of HCO3− had no intense effect on Cr(VI) removal, while SO42− inhibited Cr(VI) removal in the reaction system. To investigate the removal mechanism of Cr(VI) by K2FeO4 in presence of Mn(II), the reaction products were characterized by the Fourier transformed infrared spectrometer, X-ray powder diffraction, Transmission electron microscopy and the high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results indicated the ferrate decomposition products of γ-FeOOH/γ-Fe2O3 had the ability to adsorb Cr(VI) and react with Mn(II) to form γ-Fe2O3-Mn(II) complex to adsorb and reduce Cr(VI).
