Removal of hexavalent chromium from wastewater by Cu/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles

Ye Jien,Wang Yi,Xu Qiao,Wu Hanxin,Tong Jianhao,Shi Jiyan

Passivation of nanoscale zerovalent iron hinders its efficiency in water treatment, and loading another catalytic metal has been found to improve the efficiency significantly. In this study, Cu/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles were prepared by liquid-phase chemical reduction for removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater. Synthesized bimetallic nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmet–Teller isotherm, and X-ray diffraction. The results showed that Cu loading can significantly enhance the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by 29.3% to 84.0%, and the optimal Cu loading rate was 3% (wt%). The removal efficiency decreased with increasing initial pH and Cr(VI) concentration. The removal of Cr(VI) was better fitted by pseudo-second-order model than pseudo-first-order model. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the Cr(VI) removal was spontaneous and endothermic, and the increase of reaction temperature facilitated the process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that Cr(VI) was completely reduced to Cr(III) and precipitated on the particle surface as hydroxylated Cr(OH) 3 and Cr x Fe 1−x (OH) 3 coprecipitation. Our work could be beneficial for the application of iron-based nanomaterials in remediation of wastewater.

Synthesis of Ag–Cu alloy nanosheets for ascorbic acid detection

Kong Lijun,Chen Jiahao,Peng Zehui,Zhang Jiawei,Gao Yuan,Yan Shancheng

Metal alloy nanosheets play a very important role as catalysts, which also show obvious advantages in the field of biosensor. Compared with traditional methods, such as enzyme method, gas chromatography or optical absorbance, the detection of ascorbic acid is simpler and more stable by spectroscopy. Ag–Cu alloy nanosheets with a thickness of about 1–3 nm and an average lateral size of 3–5 nm were synthesized in this study by the soft template method. These nanosheets were used to construct a sensor for measuring the concentration of ascorbic acid. The initial UV-Vis absorption peaks for the Ag–Cu alloy nanosheets in aqueous solution were effectively quenched upon addition of ascorbic acid. As the ascorbic acid concentration was in the range of 5–250 mmol/L changes, the UV absorbance intensity for the sensor also changed. Because of its wide detection range, high sensitivity, and excellent stability, the Ag–Cu alloy sensor method may be an excellent alternative to the traditional ascorbic acid measure method.

Covalent organic framework nanorods bearing single Cu sites for efficient photocatalysis

Zhiyue Dong,Liang Zhang,Jiang Gong,Qiang Zhao

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) nanostructures capable of efficient visible light absorption, complete holes-electrons separation, and reactant enrichment remain a synthetic challenge for advanced photocatalysts. Herein, we rationally design a novel Cu-coordinated terpyridyl-based, 2D lamellar COF-909(Cu) nanorods. The coordinated single Cu sites not only dramatically enhance the visible light absorption and achieve the complete electrons-holes separation, but also provide the specific binding sites to enrich N/O-containing organic toxicants. The laminar arrangement and 1D nanochannel of COF-909(Cu) nanorods shorten the transfer distance of electrons to the active sites. As a proof of concept, it shows excellent performance in the photocatalytic degradation of sulfamethoxazole, which surpasses the-state-of-art photocatalysts. Density functional theory calculations confirm the structure-function relationship between the single Cu sites and the complete electrons-holes separation as well as strong binding sites for target molecules.

Preparation and properties of graphene reinforced Cu/0.5CeO230Cr electrical contact materials

Shuang Liu,Lihua Li,Meng Zhou,Shengli Liang,Yi Zhang,Jinliang Huang,Baohong Tian,Yongfeng Geng,Yong Liu,Yanlin Jia,Xu Li,Alex A. Volinsky

A graphene reinforced Cu/CeO 2 Cr electrical contact material with high strength and electrical conductivity was designed. Graphene oxide (GO) was prepared with modified Hummers' method. Composite powders of GO, ceria nanoparticles , copper and chromium were prepared by freeze-drying. The GO-Cu/0.5CeO 2 30Cr electrical contact material was prepared by spark plasma sintering . Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization results indicated that during the sintering process, the graphene oxide was transformed into reduced graphene oxide (RGO). In addition, SEM and TEM characterization results indicated that the CeO 2 nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed in the matrix, which hindered the movement of dislocations and improved the strength of the matrix, and a small amount of carbon atoms combined with Cr to form Cr 3 C 2 , enhancing the interface bonding. Compared with Cu/0.5CeO 2 30Cr composites, the electrical conductivity, hardness, tensile strength , and welding resistance of the two composites containing 0.5 wt% and 1.0 wt% GO were both improved and the 0.5GO-Cu/0.5CeO 2 30Cr composites have better welding resistance.

Exploring the Antibacteria Performance of Multicolor Ag, Au, and Cu Nanoclusters

Shanshan Wang,Yingyi Wang,Yi Peng,Xiaoming Yang

Integrating kinds of bactericides as one entirety shows prospect for improving antibacterial efficiency, thus a new type of nanoclusters based on bactericide-directed herein emerged as a combination for achieving a higher antibacterial effect. Specifically, an easily operated approach for preparing bacitracin-directed silver, gold, and copper nanoclusters (AgNCs, AuNCs, and CuNCs, respectively) was proposed. Meanwhile, AgNCs@Bacitracin, AuNCs@Bacitracin, and CuNCs@Bacitracin emitted cyan, yellow, and red colors of fluorescence, respectively, and different sizes and nitrogen contents of these nanoclusters played a critical role for their fluorescence alterations. Significantly, AgNCs@Bacitracin exhibited robust bacteria-killing efficiency than other nanoclusters, owing to its marked damage on the bacterial membrane. Additionally, propidium iodide (PI) staining indicated the bacterial membrane damage of 72.3% to the bacteria population followed by the treatment with AgNCs@Bacitracin, and the introduction of AgNCs@Bacitracin lead to the higher reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, facilitating their attractive antibacterial activity. Moreover, this strategy of developing new nanoclusters broadened the avenues for designing the improved antibacterial materials.

Removal of Cu(II) from wastewater using doped HAP-coated-limestone

Xilong Peng,Wenjin Chen,Zongjian He,Dan Li,Heng Liu,Hong Jin,Guigen Zhou,Feigao Xu

Reducing copper content in copper-containing water is a worldwide environmental problem. It has been shown that hydroxyapatite (HAP) has a significant adsorption effect on heavy metals (including Cu 2+ ). In this study, doped HAP-coated-limestone was synthesized using waste limestone, diammonium hydrogen phosphate and two kinds of chloride (Mg 2+ , Sr 2+ ). The materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Brunner-Emmet-Teller (BET) measurements and scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was found that the structure of Mg 2+ and Sr 2+ doped HAP-coated-limestone was similar to that of HAP-coated-limestone. The surface of doped HAP-coated-limestone is rougher, and the specific surface area is larger than that of HAP-coated-limestone. Some factors have been investigated affecting the uptake behavior, such as doped element, contact time, temperature and Cu 2+ concentration to optimize the conditions. The adsorption isotherms of Langmuir and Freundlich were studied, and it was proved that the adsorption isotherm of Langmuir was more consistent with the adsorption process of doped HAP-coated-limestone. The quasi-second-order dynamics can be better used to describe the experimental results compared with quasi-first-order dynamics. At the temperature of 30 °C, the adsorption capacity of HAP-coated-limestone for Cu (II) is 90.90 mg·g −1 , while the adsorption capacity is 214.20 and 121.61 mg·g −1 for Mg 2+ and Sr 2+ doped HAP-coated-limestone, respectively. Through the calculation of thermodynamic parameters, the results show that the adsorption process of Cu (II) on HAP-coated-limestone and doped HAP-coated-limestone becomes easier with the increase of temperature in a certain temperature range. The adsorption process on HAP-coated-limestone and doped HAP-coated-limestone is spontaneous and endothermic.

Wenchao Chi,Jiawei Zou,Fanrong Ai,Yanjun Lin,Wenchao Li,Chuanliang Cao,Kang Yang,Kui Zhou

Copper is an indispensable micronutrient in human health, which has important effects on the promotion of angiogenesis and thus contributes to bone formation and antimicrobial activity. We used ion exchange and pneumatic printing methods to prepare hydroxyapatite (HA) microspheres with different copper content. The microspheres were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Considering the resistance of hydroxyapatite to biodegradation in vivo, the degradation rate of microspheres in modified simulated body fluids was studied. In addition, cell proliferation and antibacterial experiments were carried out to study the biological properties of microspheres. HA-1.5MCu microbeads treated by 1.5 mol/L CuSO4curing solution have good performance on degradation, antibacterial properties and cell survival rate on day 7. The results showed that HA-1.5MCu microbeads may be used as a good repair material for bone defects. Keywords:hydroxyapatite;microbeads;copper;biological performance

Reductive dechlorination of haloacetamides in drinking water by Cu/Fe bimetal

Shenghua Chen,Wenhai Chu,Hongbin Wei,Hongying Zhao,Bin Xu,Naiyun Gao,Daqiang Yin

Haloacetamides (HAcAms), a class of highly toxic nitrogenous disinfection by-products (N-DBPs), have been widely detected in drinking water . The control of DBPs is an important measure to ensure the safety of drinking water. Due to the presence of residual chlorine and organic compounds that failed to be effectively removed, HAcAms could be formed in the finished drinking water distribution systems. In the study, Cu/Fe bimetal with different molar ratios of Cu to Fe was synthesized. This study reported that Cu/Fe bimetal reduced trichloroacetamide (TCAcAm) to dichloroacetamide (DCAcAm) and monoacetamide (MCAcAm), and the reduction ability of Fe was greatly improved due to the incorporation of Cu. The optimal HAcAm removal was achieved when the molar ratio of Cu to Fe was 2.0%, Cu/Fe bimetal could reach complete degradation of TCAcAm within 1 h. With the increase of Cu/Fe bimetal dose or the decrease of solution pH, the reduction ability of Cu/Fe bimetal for HAcAm removal also increased. The calculated integrated toxicity values from HAcAms, which was used to reflect the comprehensive control effect of Cu/Fe bimetal for HAcAms, were also reduced with the decrease of solution pH and the increase of bimetal dose. The release of Cu 2+ was not detected during the whole treatment process, Cu/Fe bimetal may be an excellent material for controlling DBPs as the end – control methods in tap water.

Carbon-coated Cu-TiO2 nanocomposite with enhanced photostability and photocatalytic activity

Sibo Chen,Xin Li,Wuyi Zhou,Shengsen Zhang,Yueping Fang

Carbon-coated Cu-TiO 2 nanocomposite (Cu-TiO 2 @C) was constructed using one-step method of thermal reduction. Their photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production from methanol aqueous solution was investigated. Under UV–vis light irradiation, the hydrogen yield of the 10 mg optimal Cu-TiO 2 @C reached 269.1 μmol h −1 , which was very close to that of Pt@TiO 2 (290.8 μmol h −1 ). The Cu-TiO 2 @C also displayed much higher photocatalytic stability in comparison with Cu-TiO 2 without coated carbon layer. The nano-Cu as photocatalytic active site improve the efficiency of photoinduced carrier separation. The carbon layer with the ability to transfer photogenerated electrons faster and to adsorb hydroxyl radicals more easily, leading to a very significant increase the reaction rate. In addition, the carbon layer can also provide a chemical protection to the Cu nanoparticles and increase the stability of the photocatalysts. The Cu-TiO 2 @C photocatalyst with the low cost, enhanced photostability and photocatalytic activity is expected to be an excellent nanocomposite t in reforming of biomass or bio-derivatives field.

Homogeneously alloyed nanoparticles of immiscible Ag–Cu with ultrahigh antibacterial activity

Lingyan Yang,Liliang Chen,Yi-Chun Chen,Lei Kang,Jiantao Yu,Yuhang Wang,Chengjia Lu,Tsutomu Mashimo,Akira Yoshiasa,Chia-Hua Lin

Immiscible bimetallic Ag–Cu system has been synthesized by the pulsed plasma in liquid method with a graph of one pulse duration. Herein, by combining X-ray power diffraction, K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, our results indicate that homogeneously alloyed Ag–Cu nanoparticles (Ag–Cu NAs) have the average diameter about 2.1 nm, composed by 48.5 at% Ag and 51.5 at% Cu with chemical analysis and the estimated lattice parameter was 3.873 Å. The antibacterial property of Ag–Cu NAs was detected against E. coli and S. aureus strains according to the colony formed abilities of bacteria on agar plates covered with the nanoparticles. With very short incubation period, Ag–Cu NAs completely inhibited the E. coli and S. aureus growth at an ultralow concentration. The mechanism of antibacterial property of Ag–Cu NAs was performed by the inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry and the plane wave pseudopotential method implemented in the CASTEP package based on the density functional theory. The Ag + dissolution is correlated with antibacterial activity for Ag–Cu NAs-assisted antibacterial treatment. These findings obtained revealed that our Ag–Cu NAs could be served as a containing material of numerous bacteria-free products in order to avoid their bacterial contamination.

Effect of Cu(II) on the stability of oxyanion-substituted schwertmannite

Li Junfei,Xie Yingying,Lu Guining,Ye Han,Yi Xiaoyun,Reinfelder John R.,Lin Zhang,Dang Zhi

Schwertmannite, a Fe(III)-oxyhydroxysulfate mineral formed in acidic (pH 3~4), iron- and sulfate-rich acid mine drainage (AMD) environments, tends to undergo phase transformations with changes in pH and redox condition, which may depend on the presence of various trace anions and cations. In the present study, the effects of Cu(II) on the stability of arsenate-, chromate-, and molybdate-substituted schwertmannite were investigated. The release of Fe(III) and sulfate from schwertmannite seems to be accelerated in the presence of Cu(II) at pH ~ 3, while Cu(II) retarded the dissolution of schwertmannite at pH ~ 5. XRD and SEM results showed that pure schwertmannite and chromate-substituted schwertmannite underwent transformation to goethite over a 2-month period, the presence of Cu(II) enhanced the stability of the mineral’s structure at both pH 3 and 5. However, the structures of arsenate- and molybdate-substituted schwertmannites showed no significant changes in the presence or absence of Cu(II) at both pH 3 and 5. During the phase transformation process, the amount of released oxyanions followed the sequence of chromate > molybdate > arsenate. Moreover, the release of arsenate and chromate from schwertmannite was retarded in the presence of Cu(II) at pH 5, whereas the release of molybdate was promoted. These results have important environmental implications for the stability of schwertmannite and its potential to immobilize contaminant trace elements under AMD conditions.

Synthesis of Cu-Ag@Ag particles using hyperbranched polyester as template

Han Wen-Song

In this manuscript, the third-generation hyperbranched polyester was synthesized with 2, 2-dimethylol propionic acid as AB 2 monomer and pentaerythrite as core molecule by using step by step polymerization process at first. Then, the Cu-Ag particles were prepared by co-reduction of silver nitrate and copper nitrate with ascorbic acid in the aqueous solution using hyperbranched polyester as template. Finally, the Cu-Ag@Ag particles were prepared by coating silver on the surface of Cu-Ag particles by reduction of silver nitrate. The synthesized hyperbranched polyester and Cu-Ag@Ag particles were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, UV-vis spectra, x-ray diffraction, Laser light scattering, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and SEM. UV-vis spectra results showed that the Cu-Ag@Ag particles had a strong absorption band at around 420 nm. Laser light scattering and SEM studies confirmed that the most frequent particle sizes of Cu-Ag@Ag particles were 1.2 um. TGA results indicated that the Cu-Ag@Ag particles had good thermal stability.
