d-Orbital Orientation-Governed Room-Temperature Magnetism in Charge Transfer Cocrystals

Shiyue Sun,Jie Zhu,Tingting Li,Shaolin Du,Yunzhe Ke,Chenfei Yang,Yajing Sun,Xiaotao Zhang,Shuaishuai Ding,Wenping Hu

The design of molecular magnets with programmable spin states at room temperature is challenging for quantum materials. Although organic charge transfer (CT) cocrystals offer a promising framework for tuning spin states through electronic coupling, the deliberate design of donor (D)-acceptor (A) pairs and based on orbital-regulation strategy to mediate effective magnetic interactions has remained unexplored. Here we prove that CT cocrystals provide a platform where metal orbital characteristics govern magnetic strength, while the ordered CT lattice mediates long-range exchange interactions to support collective magnetic ordering. We obtained C60-H2TPP, C60-CuTPP, C60-CoTPP with successively increasing ferromagnetism at 300 K. Through orbital-regulation strategy, the substitution of metal ion Cu2+ with Co2+ precisely reorients the unpaired electron orbital from an alignment parallel to the donor molecule plane to one that points directly toward the C60 molecule. This spatial orientation leads to a significant enhancement in saturation magnetization, revealing that the orbital orientation of the D and A molecules can systematically govern the ferromagnetic ground state in cocrystals. Our results support orbital-regulation strategy as an effective design principle for room-temperature molecular magnets, with implications for spintronic applications based on organic quantum materials.

Rational Engineering of Phospholipase D Unlocks Robust Catalysis for Phosphatidylserine Formation

Xurui Zhao,Xiufeng Wang,Yijie Sheng,Shuizhi Lin,Shuping Xu,Zhixiang Hu,Xueping Ling,Cuixue Chen,Mingfeng Cao,Haiyang Cui,Yinghua Lu

Phosphatidylserine (PS), a major brain phospholipid, supports the central nervous system’s health and may alleviate cognitive decline, including in Alzheimer’s disease. A key challenge in green enzymatic PS synthesis is the suppression of hydrolysis while enhancing PLD-catalyzed transphosphatidylation. Here, we developed a mechanism-guided engineering strategy for Streptomyces antibioticus phospholipase D (SaPLD). The substitution of W187I increased the PS yield to 58.3%, while V380W improved thermostability. Combining beneficial mutations generated SaPLD-R7 (W187I/V380W/G381A), which overcame the activity–stability trade-off and achieved up to 95.8% PS yield using the enzyme produced by 5 L scale fermentation. Molecular dynamics simulations showed that SaPLD-R7 enhanced substrate binding and catalysis by shortening the key active site distances and reducing local flexibility. Solvent contact and energy analyses further indicated improved stability. This work establishes a structure–mechanism–function framework for enhancing PLD transphosphatidylation and provides a robust enzymatic route for high-efficiency PS production as a valuable functional food ingredient.

Chemo-Enzymatic Synthesis of the Key Chiral Intermediate of d-Biotin

Chang-Li Xu,Xiao-Mei Wu,Bao-Di Ma,Yi Xu

The (3aS, 6aR)-lactone serves as the key chiral intermediate for the synthesis of d-biotin. A promising approach involves the asymmetric hydrolysis of meso-dimethyl ester catalyzed by an esterase to yield the (4S, 5R)-monomethyl ester, which is subsequently reduced and cyclized to afford (3aS, 6aR)-lactone. This study first optimized the fermentation medium and culture conditions for the recombinantE. colipET21a-EstSIT01 harboring theMicrobacteriumesterase gene, which exhibits high selectivity for the asymmetric synthesis of (4S, 5R)-monomethyl ester. Under optimal conditions (fermentation medium: glycerol 25 g/L, yeast extract 15 g/L, NaCl 10 g/L, MgSO4•7H2O 5 g/L; induction was initiated 2 h post-inoculation at 30 °C and pH 7.2), the enzyme activity increased 5.1-fold compared to the initial level, reaching 1072.7 U/L. Secondly, the reaction conditions for the whole-cell synthesis of (4S, 5R)-monomethyl ester catalyzed by EstSIT01 were optimized. The results indicated that organic solvents adversely affected enzyme stability, while high buffer salt concentration negatively impacted enzyme activity at elevated substrate concentrations. The optimal reaction strategy involved maintaining the pH of the aqueous reaction system at 7.5 by the controlled addition of aqueous ammonia to neutralize the (4S, 5R)-monomethyl ester produced during the reaction. Using 17.5 g/L cells and 200 mM substrate meso-dimethyl ester in deionized water, with the reaction pH mentioned at 7.5, complete conversion (100%) was achieved within 4 h at 30 °C. The space–time yield reached 441.6 g/L/d, exceeding the typical requirement for industrial biotransformation (>100 g/L/d), with 99.1% enantiomeric excess (ee) of (4S, 5R)-monomethyl ester. Finally, (4S, 5R)-monomethyl ester was reduced using sodium borohydride to synthesize (3aS, 6aR)-lactone with an ee value of 98.7%. The overall yield from meso-dimethyl ester to (3aS, 6aR)-lactone was 86.2%. These results demonstrate that this integrated chemo-enzymatic approach constitutes a greener method with promising potential for industrial application.

Ultrahigh Energy and Power Densities of d-MXene-Based Symmetric Supercapacitors

Beenish Mustafa,Wengang Lu,Zhiyuan Wang,Fuzhuo Lian,Andy Shen,Bing Yang,Jun Yuan,Chang Wu,Yangbowen Liu,Weiwei Hu,Lei Wang,Geliang Yu

Here, rational design electrodes are fabricated by mixing MXene with an aqueous solution of chloroauric acid (HAuCl4). In order to prevent MXene from self-restacking, the groups of -OH on the surface of Ti3C2Txnanosheets underwent a one-step simultaneous self-reduction from AuCl4-, generating spaces for rapid ion transit. Additionally, by using this procedure, MXene’s surface oxidation can be decreased while preserving its physio-chemical properties. The interlayered MX/Au NPs that have been obtained are combined into a conducting network structure that offers more active electrochemical sites and improved mass transfer at the electrode–electrolyte interface, both of which promote quick electron transfer during electrochemical reactions and excellent structural durability. The Ti3C2Tx-AuNPs film thus demonstrated a rate performance that was preferable to that of pure Ti3C2Txfilm. According to the results of the characterization, the AuNPs effectively adorn the MXene nanosheets. Due to the renowned pseudocapacitance charge storage mechanism, MXene-based electrode materials also work well as supercapacitors in sulfuric acid, which is why MXene AuNPs electrodes have been tested in 3 M and 1 M H2SO4. The symmetric supercapacitors made of MXene and AuNPs have shown exceptional specific capacitance of 696.67 Fg−1at 5 mVs−1in 3 M H2SO4electrolyte, and they can sustain 90% of their original capacitance for 5000 cycles. The highest energy and power density of this device, which operates within a 1.2 V potential window, are 138.4 Wh kg−1and 2076 W kg−1, respectively. These findings offer a productive method for creating high-performance metal oxide-based symmetric capacitors and a straightforward, workable approach for improving MXene-based electrode designs, which can be applied to other electro-chemical systems that are ion transport-restricted, such as metal ion batteries and catalysis. Keywords:symmetric supercapacitors;MXene;chloroauric acid (HauCl4);energy density;power density;aqueous electrolyte;energy storage;2D materials

Terahertz rare-earth orthoferrite metamaterials by 3-D direct writing technology

X. X. Zeng,R. Wang,X. Q. Xi,B. Li,J. Zhou

Terahertz (THz) radiation excites electronic and optical modes of many materials, and controlling interaction of these materials with THz pulses provides a fascinating avenue to achieve unprecedented functionalities in return. Here, woodpile-structured rare-earth orthoferrite metamaterials built with 3-D direct ink writing technology are proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Polarization-independent THz refraction and switching of resonances by varying the number of layers in the structure, as well as the structural parameters and specimen support angle are achieved. Such all-rare-earth-orthoferrite dielectric metamaterials are easy to fabricate and can be very promising in developing efficient and low cost THz functional metadevices.

One-step method to produce methyl-D-glucoside from lignocellulosic biomass

Junfeng Feng,Jianchun Jiang,Junming Xu,Zhongzhi Yang

One-pot acid-catalyzed methanolysis was applied to the liquefaction of biomass to obtain a high molar yield of methyl-D-glucoside at moderate temperature in a short time. A high bamboo conversion ratio (85 wt%) of bamboo and high molar yield of methyl-D-glucoside (40.6 mol%) were achieved. The conditions for high yield were methanol/bamboo mass ratio of 7 (350 mL methanol and 40 g bamboo), 2.0 wt% of catalyst, reaction temperature of 200 °C and reaction time of 10 min. Both hemicelluloses and cellulose (holocellulose) in the lignocellulosic biomass can convert into methyl-D-glucoside, a key and stable product. Methanolysis of biomass proved more efficient than its hydrolysis with an acid catalyst under similar reaction conditions, in water glucose yields were reduced to only 2–8 mol%.

D-tetramethrin induces cardiac looping failure in zebrafish during embryonic development

Xinhao Ye,Mijia Li,YunLong Meng,Shiyi Duan,Sijie Zhang,Keyuan Zhong

Cardiac looping is a crucial process during embryonic development. Abnormalities or failures in cardiac looping can lead to congenital heart defects, thereby affecting normal physiological function. Environmental pollutant exposure is one of the major causes of cardiac looping failure. D-tetramethrin is a hygienic insecticide widely used in households and public places, that can enter the human body through contact, insect transmission, and the food chain, thereby impacting human health. In this study, zebrafish embryos were exposed to different concentrations of D-tetramethrin to analyze its effects on heart development, and oxidative stress levels within the embryos. Additionally, qPCR was employed to analyze the transcription and the expression levels of genes related to heart development and function. The results showed that (1) D-tetramethrin exposure significantly reduced heart rate and increased the distance between the sinus venosus and the bulbus arteriosus (SV-BA), which suggested that D-tetramethrin induced cardiac looping failure and led to abnormal heart function. (2) D-tetramethrin exposure elevated the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in zebrafish embryos while decreasing the enzyme activities of key antioxidant stress enzymes, such as catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). (3) D-tetramethrin exposure resulted in a significant downregulation of the transcription of cardiac looping-related genes ( Myh6 , Nkx2.5 , Tbx2b , Tbx5a, Tnnt2c and Hand2 ) and heart function-related genes ( Gata4, Vmhc and Nppa ). Our findings indicate that D-tetramethrin causes the accumulation of ROS, which in turn alters the transcription levels of genes related to cardiac looping, ultimately resulting in cardiac looping failure.

Ferromagnetic Atomic d-p Orbital Hybridization for Promoting Al-S Batteries

Guobin Yu,Xiaoya Liu,Weiyuan Huang,Shixin Wang,Jiqiang Zhan,Lu Ma,Hongpeng Li,Xiaojing Lin,Tongchao Liu,Khalil Amine,Hongsen Li

Rechargeable aluminum-sulfur batteries (Al-S) are emerging as a promising alternative energy storage system beyond lithium-ion batteries due to their high energy density, abundant material resources, and economic efficiency. However, their practical application remains challenged by sluggish conversion kinetics, polysulfide shuttling, and low sulfur cathode utilization. While extensive studies have focused on enhancing polysulfide adsorption through catalytic strategies, the roles of electronic structure in dictating catalytic performance remain underexplored. Here, this work unveils the critical effect of unpaired electronic structure on the catalytic performance of single atom ferromagnetic transition metals through a systematic evaluation of three typical atomically dispersed ferromagnetic single atoms—Fe, Co, and Ni—supported on porous carbon (denoted as PC-SAFAs). Comprehensive characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the PC-SAFe catalysts, exhibiting the highest spin polarization arising from unpaired electrons, demonstrate the strongest interactions with polysulfide, thereby facilitating rapid and reversible polysulfide conversion reactions. Consequently, Al-S batteries incorporating the optimized PC-SAFe cathode achieve an impressive specific capacity of 508.8 mAh g −1 at 1.0 A g −1 after 500 cycles, along with much improved rate capability. This work provides a deeper understanding of the role of electronic structure in catalytic chemistry, and offers new insights for developing high-performance Al-S batteries.

D-orbital Reconstruction Achieves Low Charge Overpotential in Li-oxygen Batteries

Zhou Yin,Yin Kun,Huang Yingying,Li Jiapei,Zhu Anquan,Lin Dewu,Gan Guoqiang,Zhang Jianfang,Liu Kai,Zhang Tian,Liu Kunlun,Luan Chuhao,Yang Huawei,Chen Hou,Guo Shaojun,Zhang Wenjun,Hong Guo

Charge overpotential for oxygen evolution reaction is a crucial parameter for the energy conversion efficiency of lithium-oxygen (Li-O 2 ) batteries. So far, the realization of low charge overpotential via catalyst design is a grand challenge in this field, which usually exceeds 0.25 V. Herein, we report an orbital reconstruction strategy to significantly decrease the charge overpotential to the low 0.11 V by employing PdCo nanosheet catalyst under a low-loading mass (0.3 mg/cm 2 ) and capacity (0.3 mAh/cm 2 ). Experimental and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the precise d-d orbital coupling ( d xz - d xz , d yz - d yz and d z 2 - d z 2 ) between the low-electronegativity Co and Pd leads to the reconstruction of Pd 4  d orbitals in PdCo nanosheets, thereby resulting in a downward shift of all the three active Pd 4  d orbitals ( d z 2 , d xz and d yz ) relative to that of Pd nanosheets. Furthermore, the highest energy level of the Pd 4 d z 2 orbital in PdCo is lower than the lowest energy levels of the Pd 4 d xz and 4 d yz orbitals in pure Pd, significantly decreasing the charge activation energy and achieving a highest energy conversion efficiency of 91%. This finding provides the orbital-level tuning into rational design of highly efficient electrocatalysts for Li-O 2 batteries.

Fumigant Activity of Sweet Orange Essential Oil Fractions Against Red Imported Fire Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Hu Wei,Zhang Ning,Chen Hongli,Zhong Balian,Yang Aixue,Kuang Fan,Ouyang Zhigang,Chun Jiong

Sweet orange oil fractions were prepared by molecular distillation of cold-pressed orange oil from sample A (Citrus sinensis (L.) ‘Hamlin’ from America) and sample B (Citrus sinensis Osbeck ‘Newhall’ from China) respectively, and their fumigant activities against medium workers of red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta Buren) were investigated. The volatile composition of the orange oil fractions was identified and quantified using GC–MS. Fractions from sample A (A1, A2, and A3) contained 23, 37, and 48 chemical constituents, and fractions from sample B (B1, B2, and B3) contained 18, 29, and 26 chemical constituents, respectively. Monoterpenes were the most abundant components, accounting for 73.56% to 94.86% of total orange oil fractions, among which D-limonene (65.28–80.18%), β-pinene (1.71–5.58%), 3-carene (0.41–4.01%), β-phellandrene (0.58–2.10%), and linalool (0.31–2.20%) were major constituents. Fumigant bioassay indicated that all orange oil fractions exerted good fumigant toxicity against workers of fire ants at 3, 5, 10, and 20 mg/centrifuge tubes, and B1 had the strongest insecticidal potential, followed by A1, B2, A2, B3, and A3. The fractions composed of more high volatile molecules (A1 and B1) showed greater fumigant effects than others. Compounds linalool and D-limonene, which were the constituents of the orange oil, exhibited excellent fumigant toxicity against red imported fire ant workers. Linalool killed red imported fire ant workers completely at 5, 10, and 20 mg/tube after 8 h of treatment, and D-limonene induced >86% mortality at 8 h of exposure.

Gold nanorods as colorimetric probes for naked-eye recognition of carnitine enantiomers

Wang Yanwei,Zhou Xiaojuan,Liu Qiang,Jin Yan,Xu Chunli,Li Baoxin

In this work, we proposed one simple and effective chiral-sensing method for the discrimination of carnitine enantiomers. The gold nanorods (AuNRs) were used as colorimetric probes to recognize carnitine enantiomers in this method. l -Carnitine can induce rapidly the blue-to-gray change of AuNR solution color, whereas d -carnitine cannot induce the obvious change of the color. Based on this distinct difference of color, a visual method for recognition of carnitine enantiomers was suggested. This method has been applied to detect the enantiometric excess of l -carnitine in the range of − 100~100%. The presented chiral measurement can be performed with a simple ultraviolet-visible spectrometer and even the naked eyes. In this method, AuNRs need no modification with chiral molecule, and the chiral recognition is based on the inherent chirality of AuNRs. This new method opens up possibility for fast and easy assay of carnitine enantiomers. Graphical abstract
