Plasma-Driven Fe/Cu-MOF Catalyzed CO2 Decomposition to CO

Xin Long,Shijie Zhou,Dong Liang,Mingdong Zhou,Liwei Sun,Yuehui Li

Room-temperature plasma-assisted catalysis represents an important pathway for CO 2 valorization. Rational design of catalysts tailored to plasma environment holds significant potential for improving catalytic efficiency. Unprecedentedly, we report a coordination-engineering strategy to fabricate the Fe/Cu mix-metal organic framework (Fe/Cu-MOF) catalysts for plasma-driven CO 2 dissociation into CO. Precise modulation during synthesis revealed an optimal Fe:Cu ratio of 0.44:0.56 to generating synergistic active sites favorable for CO production. The in situ-formed FeCu-based catalyst exhibited exceptionally high CO space-time yield of 32.3 mmol·gcat-1·h-1 under room-temperature plasma conditions. The coordination-tailored electronic structure enables the dynamic variations in the oxidation states of Fe/Cu upon plasma activation, thus facilitating sustained CO 2 activation. This work establishes atomic-level control of bimetallic sites as a powerful paradigm for plasma-catalytic systems. Graphical For the first time, Fe-Cu bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) synthesized via a one‑pot solvothermal method were used for efficient decomposition of CO 2 into CO with excellent stability under nonthermal plasma (NTP). This integrated approach offers fundamental insights and technical support for the development of robust catalysts under plasma conditions.

Electrochemically Activated Ni-Fe Oxyhydroxide for Mimic Saline Water Oxidation

Shusheng Wan,Xiaojun Wang,Guiru Zhang,Yongcheng Wang,Jie Chen,Qiaoxia Li,Yixiao Zhang,Liwei Chen,Xiaoming Wang,Guang Meng,Kun Jiang

Utilizing renewable energy to produce green hydrogen from saline water electrolysis is becoming increasingly important yet is largely challenged by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction kinetics, the competitive anodic chlorine evolution reaction, and the resultant electrode corrosion. Here, we report an electrochemically activated Ni-Fe oxyhydroxide catalyst that delivers an early onset potential of 1.51 V at 100 mA cm–2 within mimic saline water of 0.5 M NaCl + 1 M NaOH. During the electrochemical activation, ex situ X-ray radiation and in situ Raman characterizations reveal the structural reconstruction of amorphous Ni (oxy)hydroxide generation and electronic structure modulation from Fe intercalation. Headspace gas chromatography and iodine titration results confirm the ∼100% Faradaic efficiency toward O2 evolution on activated NiFeOxHy, whereas the long-term stability is assessed by an anion exchange membrane electrolyzer, demonstrating only 350 mV voltage decay during the 100 h continuous electrolysis at 500 mA cm–2.

Sulfite activation by Fe-doped g-C3N4 for metronidazole degradation

Qiansong Li,Hao Xu,Guanyu Zhou,Feng Cheng,Meijing Wang,Jing Zhang,Yunqi Wang,Xue Huang,Qingguo Wang

The shortcomings of homogeneous activation for metal/sulfite such as narrow pH range, recovery and potential secondary contamination seriously limit the application of metal/sulfite systems in practical conditions. To overcome these drawbacks, we tested the degradation of metronidazole using an iron-doped graphite carbonitride (5%Fe-g-C 3 N 4 ) as the catalyst to activate sulfite. The mechanism of the reaction was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, radical quenching and chemical probe experiment. The effects of pH, Fe-g-C 3 N 4 , sulfite dosages and common anions were assessed and the degradation pathway of MNZ was also proposed. The results showed that 5%Fe-g-C 3 N 4 was an effective catalyst for sulfite activation in the heterogeneous system and SO 4 − and OH were the main radicals leading to the degradation of metronidazole. After five times of recycle, Fe-g-C 3 N 4 still had a good catalytic activity. Moreover, the Fe-g-C 3 N 4 /sulfite system could degrade metronidazole at a wide pH range of 4–9.

Halogen-Substituted Spin-Crossover Fe(III) Compounds with Photoresponsive Properties

Zhi-Kun Liu,Zi-Shuo Yao,Jun Tao

Halogen-substituted Fe(III) compounds, [Fe(HphsalpmX)2]PTFB (HphsalpmX = 5-X-(R,S)-((phenyl(2-pyridyl)methylimino)methyl)phenol, PTFB = phenyltrifluoroborate; X = F for 1, Cl for 2, Br for 3) and [Fe(HphsalpmX)2]PTFB·MeOH (X = I for 4·MeOH), were synthesized. Compounds 1, 4·MeOH, and its desolvated form 4 exhibited an invariant high-spin state in the whole temperature range, while 2 and 3 underwent gradual, nonhysteretic, and incomplete spin crossover (SCO) with transition temperatures (TC) of 153 and 220 K, respectively. Interestingly, the SCO-active compounds 2 and 3 showed light-induced excited spin-state trapping (LIESST) effects at 10 K, and light-induced reversible ON/OFF switching behaviors were realized by alternately using 880 and 1064 nm light, while the thermally inert compound 4·MeOH unexpectedly showed a reverse-LIESST effect. These results may help to design and synthesize new photoresponsive SCO Fe(III) compounds for the development of switchable materials.

Sustainable electrochemical dyeing of indigo with Fe(Ⅱ)-based complexes

Xiaoyan Li,Kangkang Wang,Mengqian Wang,Wei Zhang,Jiming Yao,Sridhar Komarneni

In order to avoid the intensive burden of sewage treatment in the traditional dyeing process of indigo caused by the heavy usage of sodium dithionite (Na 2 S 2 O 4 ), an indirect electrochemical reduction dyeing method for denim fabrics was carried out. The indirect electrochemical reduction dyeing with different iron-based complexes was explored by cyclic voltammetry. In addition, the stability of the complex solution, the reduction potential of the dye solution, the rate of dye reduction (Re) and ferrous ion conversion (Xe) in the electrochemical process were investigated, which showed that the Fe(Ⅱ)-DGS-Abal B complex containing ferrous sulfate, sodium gluconate and Abal B (a complexing agent with high alkali resistance and electrical conductivity based on triethanolamine) had stronger reducing capacity. Furthermore, orthogonal experiments and gray clustering analysis were utilized to optimize the indirect electrochemical dyeing process for denim fabric. Under the optimized electrochemical reduction dyeing process, the rate of dye reduction could be up to 91.23% and the K/S value of dyed denim fabric could reach 14.75, which is 6.58% higher than that of the traditional dyeing process. Besides, the dyeing depth is nearly invariable within 7 times of cyclic dyeing and the dyeing liquid is more susceptible to biological and chemical degradation . Compared with the traditional reduction dyeing with Na 2 S 2 O 4 at higher temperature, the electrochemical reduction dyeing strategy uses electrical energy to reduce indigo at room temperature, and the reduction medium could be sustainably utilized by the circulation pump after the cyclic electrochemical reduction dyeing is completed, which not only decreases the COD value of dyeing wastewater, but also saves 63.5% of the economic cost. The eco-friendly electrochemical dyeing strategy presented here with obvious economic benefits could significantly contribute to enhance the sustainability of dyeing process for denim production.

Phase transition and magnetocaloric effect in particulate Fe-Rh alloys

Cao Yutao,Yuan Yue,Shang Yafen,Zverev Vladimir I.,Gimaev Radel R.,Barua R.,Hadimani R. L.,Mei Lan,Guo Gang,Fu Hao

Micro-sized particles of Fe x Rh 100− x ( x  = 50, 48, 45, 40, and 35) binary alloys were synthesized by a solid-phase reduction method and their structural properties, magnetic properties and cytotoxicity have been characterized. From X-ray diffraction results, the Fe 50 Rh 50 alloy is in a single chemically ordered α ′ phase while the face-centered cubic disordered γ phase arises and increases with Rh content when x is smaller than 50. The magnetization behavior of the alloys demonstrates that the α ′ phase consists of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic components due to the nonuniformity of elements in the particulate alloys. The maximal magnetic entropy change and the relative refrigeration capacity of the Fe 50 Rh 50 particles reach 9.7 J/kg K and 230 J/kg, respectively, with a 0–3 T magnetic field change. Despite its moderate magnetic entropy among the first-order transition materials, Fe 50 Rh 50 microparticles are promising for biomedical applications due to its large relative cooling power and low cytotoxicity.

Enhanced H2O2 activation and sulfamethoxazole degradation by Fe-impregnated biochar

Xiaoying Zhang,Peizhe Sun,Kajia Wei,Xia Huang,Xiaoyuan Zhang

Some uses of biochar/H 2 O 2 in the removal of organic pollutants from sewage have made the advanced oxidation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products by modified biochar possible. However, little is known about the performance of modified biochar and the mechanism of this process. Herein, the activation of H 2 O 2 by Fe-impregnated biochar (FBC, produced from maize straw, wheat straw and peanut shell) was studied, and the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was specifically investigated. The results show that Fe-impregnated biochar had the ability to activate H 2 O 2 and degrade SMX and its performance was better than that of the original biochar. With the increase of pyrolysis temperature from 350 °C to 700 °C, Fe-impregnated maize straw (1 g/L) enhanced the decomposition of H 2 O 2 (3 mM) from 66% to 99% within 2 h. The degradation of SMX (10 μM) by FM700/H 2 O 2 within 2 h reached 100%, which was approximately 3 times of that of the original biochar. The mechanism of activation-degradation was elucidated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The results show that the interaction of H 2 O 2 with C-OH promoted the generation of HO and that HO and non-radical sites jointly attacked SMX to degrade it. Impregnation with Fe not only increased the specific surface area of the biochar but also provided more active sites to activate H 2 O 2 and degrade SMX.

Magnetic and Biocompatible Fullerenol/Fe(III) Microcapsules with Antioxidant Activities

Mengjun Chen,Keyang Yin,Geping Zhang,Huizhong Liu,Bo Ning,Youyong Dai,Xiaojing Wang,Hongguang Li,Jingcheng Hao

Fullerene C60 (refers to C60 hereafter) has a unique three-dimensional architecture and intriguing physicochemical properties. It has great potential applications in materials chemistry and life science. However, a big obstacle for the widespread application of C60 lies in the limited strategies to make supramolecular structures with diverse morphologies and functions. Herein, we report a strategy to prepare C60-based, magnetic microcapsules which can be used as external antioxidants to effectively attenuate oxidative stress. The microcapsules are composed of fullerenol, a highly water-soluble C60 multiadduct, and iron ions (Fe3+) released from a rusty nail. They can be easily obtained through coordination between the hydrophilic functional groups in fullerenol and Fe3+ with polystyrene microspheres as templates. The fullerenol/Fe3+ microcapsules have good colloidal stability both in water and serum. Their biocompatibility has been confirmed by in vitro tests on HEK293 and Hela cells. Electron spin resonance measurements indicate that the fullerenol/Fe3+ microcapsules can effectively scavenge hydroxyl radicals (OH·–) produced by H2O2, which greatly improves the living environment of the cells. The fullerenol/Fe3+ microcapsules exhibit ferromagnetic properties and can respond to the external magnetic field, enabling magnetic manipulation, and/or separation in practical applications.

Fe doped CoO/C nanofibers towards efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Weimo Li,Meixuan Li,Ce Wang,Yen Wei,Xiaofeng Lu

Rational design of highly efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential to construct high-performance energy devices. In this study, we have developed an electrospinning, in situ polymerization and carbonization process to fabricate Fe doped CoO/C (Fe-CoO/C) nanofibers as efficient OER electrocatalysts. In the synthesized Fe-CoO/C nanofibers, ultrathin carbon layer can be used as conductive network to promote electron transfer and thus improve the electrocatalytic activity. At the same time, additional active sites, like bridged site, formed by Fe doping, also provides the catalyst excellent electrochemical activity in OER. The as-prepared Fe-CoO/C nanofibers exhibit an excellent OER activity with an overpotential of 362 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 in an alkaline medium, which is comparable with the commercial RuO 2 catalyst. After 2500 cyclic voltammograms (CVs) cycles test, the catalyst still maintains the initial electrocatalytic activity, demonstrating a great durability. This strategy introduces both carbon layer and Fe doping to increase the conductivity and the density of active sites of CoO nanofibers, thus enhancing the electrocatalytic activity and stability. This work offers an efficient route to develop low-cost and highly active transitional metal oxide-based OER electrocatalyst for potential renewable electrochemical energy conversion and storage.

Novel and efficient electromagnetic wave absorption of SiBCN(Fe) nanofibers

Chunmiao Liu,Yanchun Tong,Chang Liu,Jie Liu,Haibin Sun,Qiangqiang Hu,Shigang Wu,Yujun Zhao,Jiao Li,Xue Guo,Yurun Feng

In this work, novel and efficient SiBCN(Fe) nanofibers were successfully prepared by electrostatic spinning and polymer-derived ceramic (PDCs) methods, and their electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption properties were investigated after pyrolysis at 1100–1500 °C. Notably, SiBCN(Fe) nanofibers exhibit the best EMW absorption performance after pyrolysis at 1400 °C, with a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −72.87 dB at 3.6 GHz and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB, RL≤ −10 dB) of 4.34 GHz at 1.44 mm. Its excellent EMW absorption performance is attributed to its fiber structure, which facilitates the multi-level reflection and scattering of EMW. Meanwhile, the doping of Fe facilitates the in-situ generation of substances such as Fe 3 Si, which can impart SiBCN(Fe) nanofibers with magnetic loss and perfect impedance matching performance. The simulated radar cross-section (RCS) results show that the optimized SiBCN(Fe) nanofibers can effectively achieve the attenuation of EMW in a practical environment. Compared with many previously reported magnetic hybrid composites, SiBCN(Fe) nanofibers exhibit excellent electromagnetic absorption properties with a simpler preparation process, which have the potential to be used as lightweight, ultra-strong radar-absorbing materials.

Biomass-derived Fe/C composites for broadband electromagnetic wave response

Yi Chen,Rong Qiang,Yulong Shao,Jiawen Qiu,Qian Ma,Xiao Yang,Rui Xue,Bowen Chen,Shijiang Feng,Yuancheng Ding

Magnetic metal modified carbon-based composites synthesized through chemical methods have shown great potential in the field of electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. Biomass-derived carbon, as an alternative to traditional carbon sources, has better economic and environmental benefits. In this work,we embedded magnetic iron ions in dried agaric through multi-effect adsorption and obtained ripple-like Fe/C composites after high-temperature annealing. The effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of Fe/C composites can reach 6.3 GHz (11.5–17.8 GHz) at 2.5 mm, achieving broadband electromagnetic response. The excellent performance can be attributed to the ripple-like carbon, which enhances the transmission path of EMW in the absorber. On the other hand, the uniform loading of Fe nanoparticles on biomass-derived carbon promotes the interface polarization and dipole polarization and coordinates the impedance matching of the composites. This study provides a reference for the design and construction of efficient biomass-derived magnetic carbon-based absorbers.

Hydrodeoxygenation and hydrodesulfurization over Fe promoted Ni2P/SBA-15 catalyst

Bolong Jiang,Tianhan Zhu,Hua Song,Feng Li

The Fe-doped Ni 2 P/Fe-SBA-15 was prepared by the temperature programmed reduction method at a relative low temperature of 673 K. The effect of Fe on the catalytic performance for benzofuran (BF) hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) and dibenzothiophene (DBT) hydrodesulfurization (HDS) were investigated. The catalysts were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), N 2 adsorption-desorption, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH 3 -TPD), and transmission electron microscope (TEM) and CO uptakes. The results indicate the incorporation of Fe into SBA-15 contributes to the exposure of smaller Ni 2 P particles (5.6 nm) with an uniform dispersion, along with enhancement of weak and medium acid strengths . Compared with Ni 2 P/SBA-15, the Fe-doped Ni 2 P/Fe-SBA-15 exhibited a much higher BF conversion of 91.7% with an improved total deoxygenated product yield of 83.3%. The excellent HDO performance of Ni 2 P/Fe-SBA-15 can be ascribed to the exposure of highly-dispersed smaller Ni 2 P particles. Meanwhile, the improved dehydration of 2-EtPh to EB and the high deoxygenated product selectivity can be attributed to the enhanced acidity. As compared to the Ni 2 P/SBA-15, the Fe-doped Ni 2 P/Fe-SBA-15 showed a higher DBT HDS activity of 96.3% with the BP formation at a great proportion of 90.3%, indicating that DBT was mainly transformed through the desulfurization pathway during HDS.
