A fluorescence and SERS dual-mode sensing on tetracycline antibiotics based on Ag@NH2-MIL-101(Al) nanoprobe

Junjie Qi,Jingkun Li,Yuqi Wan,Yu Li,Fuwei Pi

Antibiotic residues are becoming more and more concern due to the increasingly serious resistance from bacteria to organism. On-site and accurate evaluation on antibiotics is necessary and urgent to effectively solve such public issue. To provide point-of-care-test (POCT) ideas for antibiotic accurate evaluation, a fluorescence (FL)-surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) dual-mode detection of tetracycline antibiotic (TCs) was realized for the first time. Based on the inner filter effect in Ag@NH 2 -MIL-101(Al) nanoprobe, the fluorescence quenching was induced and the SERS signal was swiftly turn on through π-π interaction and hydrogen bonding in the presence of TCs. This FL-SERS dual mode sensor displayed excellent detection limits (FL in ∼10 −3 ppm, SERS in ∼10 −5 ppm), and achieved a reliable detection of TCs in honey with a recovery rate of 84.45%−112.08%. This method combines the advantages of FL and SERS detection, meanwhile, two techniques verified against each other to achieve highly sensitive and specific FL-SERS dual-mode sensor for TCs. We believe that such antibody-or aptamer-independent FL and SERS complementary nanoprobe can be applied to fast, direct and multiple sensing in environment and food hazards.

MIL-161 Metal–Organic Framework for Efficient Au(III) Recovery from Secondary Resources: Performance, Mechanism, and DFT Calculations

Guangyuan Hu,Zhiwei Wang,Weiye Zhang,Hongxing He,Yi Zhang,Xiujun Deng,Weili Li

The recovery of precious metals from secondary resources is significant economically and environmentally. However, their separation is still challenging because they often occur in complex metal ion mixtures. The poor selectivity of adsorbents for gold in complicated solutions prevents further application of adsorption technology. In this study, a Zr-based MOF adsorbent, MIL-161, was synthesized using s-tetrazine dicarboxylic acid (H2STz) as an organic ligand. MIL-161 demonstrated a high adsorption capacity of up to 446.49 mg/g and outstanding selectivity for gold(III) in a simulated electronic waste solution as a result of the presence of sulfur- and nitrogen-containing groups. In addition, the MIL-161 adsorbents were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), Brunner–Emment–Teller (BET), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Additionally, the adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics of the MOF adsorbents were also thoroughly examined. More importantly, the experimental results and DFT calculations indicate that chelation and electrostatic interactions are the main adsorption mechanisms.Keywords:selectivity;e-wastes;metal–organic framework;gold;adsorption;DFT calculations

Constructing MIL-53(Fe)@ZIF-67(Co) binary metal–organic framework hierarchical heterostructure electrodes for efficient oxygen evolution

Dan Wen,Yan Ma,Guomei Mu,Qiuping Huang,Xuefeng Luo,Dunmin Lin,Chenggang Xu,Fengyu Xie,Guangzhao Wang,Wenhan Guo

Improving the efficiency of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is important to solve the global energy crisis and greenhouse gas emission problems. In this paper, a preparation method for a MIL-53(Fe)@ZIF-67(Co) composite electrode is proposed. The hierarchical structure formed by the combination of MIL-53(Fe) and ZIF-67(Co) provides a rich channel for the transport of electrons and mass in the OER process. XPS analysis and DFT calculations revealed that Fe electrons in MIL-53(Fe) were transferred to Co in ZIF-67(Co) through O, which confirmed the rapid charge transfer effect of this transport channel. The MIL-53(Fe)@ZIF-67(Co) electrode has significant OER performance. When the current density reaches 10 mA cm−2, the overpotential is only 193 mV. This study inaugurates a new way for the rational design of a multiphase interface and the construction of new MOF channel structures.

Anchoring HPW by amino-modified MIL-101(Cr) to improve the properties of SPEEK in proton exchange membranes

Xiaocan Zhang,Huixiao Ma,Tong Pei,Ruochen Zhang,Yiran Liu

Incorporating phosphotungstic acid (HPW) in proton exchange membranes (PEMs) is an effective way to improve proton conductivity, but its leakage remains a problem. It can be solved by immobilizing acid in membranes to enhance the stability of PEMs. Herein, we proposed a novel sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) composite membrane (SPEEK/HPW@MIL) that was prepared by blending amino-modified MIL-101(Cr) to anchor HPW. In this work, HPW was anchored through hydrogen bond to minimize its leakage and enhance the overall compatibility. The incorporation of MIL-101(Cr)-NH 2 also helped lower the swelling ratio and improve the dimensional stability. Compared with pristine SPEEK and SPEEK/MIL membrane, the proton conductivity of the SPEEK/HPW@MIL composite membrane increased by 26% and 14%, respectively. The superior performance recommended a promising conception for anchoring HPW in PEMs.

Shiyu Zhang,Qiuyu Qiao,Yangfeng Wen,Kena Ren,Xiaoyu Ma,Haisheng Tao

A novel composite of acetic acid-modulated AC-NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) was prepared by mild chemistry . The catalyst was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunaure-Emmett-Teller (BET) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Acetic acid can control the crystal size, so that the catalyst had a large specific surface area (99.35 m 2 ·g −1 ) and pore size (0.13 cm 3 ·g −1 ), the adsorption amount of Rhodamine B (RhB) up to 446.965 mg·g −1 , after the addition of peroxydisulfate (PDS), the catalytic degradation efficiency of RhB was as high as 99.7%. Electronic paramagnetic resonance spectrometer (EPR) and quenching experiments showed that the catalytic process may involve radical (·OH, SO 4 -· and O 2 ·- ) and non-radical ( 1 O 2 ) processes, in which the contribution of 1 O 2 to degradation reached 63.55% and played a major role.

Efficient lithium extraction from aqueous solutions by MIL-100(Fe): A study on adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics and mechanism

Chengyu Huangfu,Shuning Yu,Bo Tong,Anni Yang,Jiafei Lyu,Xianghai Guo

MIL-100(Fe) is a kind of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with robust water and chemical stability. The adsorption kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics and regeneration of MIL-100(Fe) were investigated to illustrate the process of efficient lithium adsorption. The adsorption kinetics of MIL-100(Fe) followed Pseudo-second-order model, and the lithium adsorption equilibrium was reached rapidly in 2 h. Langmuir model fit best with the adsorption isotherms, indicating chemisorption of lithium ions on MIL-100(Fe) and possibly a monolayer adsorption process. By calculating thermodynamic parameters (Δ G θ , Δ H θ and Δ S θ ), the adsorption of lithium on MIL-100(Fe) can be illustrated by a spontaneous endothermic process. The adsorption mechanism involved electrostatic interaction, impact of crystal defect sites and coordinative interactions between metal active sites and lithium ions (Fe—F‧‧‧Li). MIL-100(Fe) was regenerated for four cycles, and there was only a slightly decrease in adsorption capacity and the morphology remained stable. Combined with extremely short equilibrium time and high stability, MIL-100(Fe) can be a promising adsorbent for lithium extraction.

Preparation of Cu-CS@IN@MIL-100 (Fe) for controlled indoxacarb release and reduced non-target organism risks

Yongpan Shan,Yajie Ma,Changcai Wu,Xiangliang Ren,Xianpeng Song,Dan Wang,Hongyan Hu,Xiaoyan Ma,Yan Ma

Control release of pesticides based on target plant characteristics is highly desirable for improving the effective utilization rate and reducing non-target organism risks. Here, the controlled release formulations (Cu-CS@IN@MIL-100 (Fe)) were successfully prepared by employing MIL-100 (Fe) as the carrier material, indoxacarb (IN) as the model pesticide, and chitosan (CS) as a coating to chelate copper ions by chemical crosslinking. The prepared Cu-CS@IN@MIL-100 (Fe) had an acceptable loading content (36.25 %). The introduction of CS and copper ions endowed it with sustained release properties under weak acidity conditions like cotton leaves. The laboratory bioassay experiments showed that Cu-CS@IN@MIL-100 (Fe) had practical good insecticidal activity (LC 50 = 4.936 mg/L) in controlling Helicoverpa armigera larvae. For long-term control efficacy experiments, after 14 days of application, the Cu-CS@IN@MIL-100 (Fe) treatment (73 %) mortality of Helicoverpa armigera larvae was significantly higher than the 15 % indoxacarb suspension concentrates (SC) treatment (27 %). Moreover, Cu-CS@IN@MIL-100 (Fe) had no adverse effect on cottonseed germination and the acute toxicity to Chrysopa pallens larvae was significantly lower than IN SC. Therefore, MIL-100 (Fe) could be used as an ecological safety carrier for pesticide delivery to improve IN effective utilization and reduce non-target organism risks.

Amino-functionalized MIL-125(Ti) for photodenitrification of pyridine in fuels via coordination activation by unsaturated Ti4+ centers

Shihui Wang,Zhoujun He,Ling Wu,Deling Wang,Ruiru Si,Xiyao Liu,Ruowen Liang

Due to their explicit structure, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been supposed to be credible platforms to research the micro-mechanism of heterogeneous photocatalysis. In this study, amino-functionalized MOFs (MIL-125(Ti)–NH2 (denoted as MTi), UiO-66(Zr)–NH2 (denoted as UZr) and MIL-68(In)–NH2 (denoted as MIn)) with three different metal centers were synthesized and applied for the denitrification of simulated fuels under visible light irradiation, during which pyridine was used as a typical nitrogen-containing compound. The results showed that MTi had the best activity among the above three MOFs, and the denitrogenation rate increased to 80% after 4 h of visible light irradiation. On the grounds of the theoretical calculation of pyridine adsorption and actual activity experiments, it can be presumed that the unsaturated Ti4+ metal centers should be the key active sites. Meanwhile, the XPS and in situ infrared results verified that the coordinatively unsaturated Ti4+ sites facilitate the activation of pyridine molecules through the surface –N⋯Ti– coordination species. The coordination–photocatalysis synergism promotes the efficiency of photocatalytic performance and the corresponding mechanism is proposed.

Coupling plasmonic effect into stable AgCl/NH2-MIL-68In Z-scheme heterojunction system for efficient photodegradation of levofloxacin

Mian He,Jun Chen,Yang Yang,Xinru Hu,Ziru Jiang,Yuan Yan,Jingyi Sun,Lianshe Fu,Jiamin Wei,Tinghai Yang

Unstable contact interface, inferior charge transmission efficiency and low redox capability significantly inhibit the photocatalytic property of heterojunctions . Herein, a stable AgCl/NH 2 -MIL-68In Z-scheme heterojunction that couples with plasmonic Ag nanoparticles (NPs) to promote efficient long-range charge separation is rationally designed. This heterostructure is successfully fabricated by the in-situ growth of AgCl and Ag NPs on the surface and framework of NH 2 -MIL-68In via a facile ion exchange precipitation approach. Benefiting from the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Ag NPs and the interfacial heterojunction, the visible light response is enhanced and the recombination rate of photogenerated charges is weakened. Impressively, the artificial Z-scheme heterojunction exhibits superior photocatalytic activity for levofloxacin degradation. Furthermore, the adjustment of the AgCl and Ag NPs loading ratio of NH 2 -MIL-68In further improves the photocatalytic degradation activity of levofloxacin (0.0222 min −1 ), which is much higher than that of pure NH 2 -MIL-68In ( k  = 0.00121 min −1 ) and AgCl ( k  = 0.00093 min −1 ). This work not only develops an effective photocatalyst for the degradation of organic pollutants, but also provides a promising sight for feasible designing the more stable Z-scheme heterojunction with efficient charge separation efficiency.

Highly efficient sunlight-driven reduction of Cr(VI) by TiO2@NH2-MIL-88B(Fe) heterostructures under neutral conditions

Ranran Yuan,Cailiang Yue,Jinli Qiu,Fuqiang Liu,Aimin Li

TiO 2 @NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe) heterostructures (TMFe-x) were successfully synthesized and used in an efficient sunlight-driven reduction towards Cr(VI) in a neutral aqueous media. Further, the prepared TMFe-x heterostructures exhibited higher photocatalytic activity when compared with those exhibited by pure TiO 2 and NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe) under simulated sunlight irradiation. The optical TiO 2 modification content was determined to be 10 wt.% (TMFe-b), with 98.6% Cr(VI) being converted to Cr(III) within 35 min using ammonium oxalate as the hole scavenger at pH = 7. In neutral conditions, the kinetic rate constant (0.0878 min −1 ) was five times larger than the published values. Additionally, the photocatalytic performance of TMFe-b was maintained and Fe leaching was observed to be negligible after the completion of four reaction cycles. The superior photocatalytic property can be attributed to the high photoelectron-hole separation and migration efficiency. Subsequently, TMFe-b achieved Cr(VI) reduction under neutral conditions by capturing hydrogen from the water molecules or the hole scavengers. The photoelectrons and superoxide radicals were the main active species. Furthermore, TMFe-b was able to efficiently eliminate various pollutants through photocatalytic oxidation and reduction. This study suggests a novel strategy for the preparation of environmentally stable and efficient MOF-based photocatalysts to efficiently eliminate various pollutants. Further, there is a huge potential for the practical application of this technology to water purification .

Adsorption Behavior and Mechanism of Sulfonamide Antibiotics in Aqueous Solution on a Novel MIL-101(Cr)@GO Composite

Xiuna Jia,Sijia Li,Yudan Wang,Ting Wang,Xiaohong Hou

The occurrence of numerous antibiotics, such as sulfonamides (SAs), in environmental water has recently heightened concerns in consideration of their potential threat to human health and aquatic ecosystems. The removal of pharmaceuticals by adsorption comprises some of the most promising techniques because of their easy regeneration, low cost, and high efficiency. In this work, MIL-101(Cr)@GO, with a high surface area, was synthesized. Its adsorption properties toward three SAs were examined in batch adsorption experiments to probe the underlying factors of adsorption behavior and the mechanism for the first time. The pronounced factors that influenced the adsorption and removal process were investigated. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms were studied in order to characterize the operation. The adsorption kinetics demonstrated that the adsorption process would match the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Furthermore, the adsorption was spontaneous, entropy was decreased, and the process was exothermic, and the equilibrium data was more appropriate described by the Freundlich isotherm model. Moreover, the adsorption–desorption of MIL-101(Cr)@GO could be consecutively cycled at least five times. MIL-101(Cr)@GO exhibited remarkable removal efficiency compared to MIL-100(Fe), MIL-101(Cr), and other adsorbents. These results demonstrated that MIL-101(Cr)@GO would be a promising adsorbent for the removal of sulfonamides from water samples and even for environmental protection.

Surface functionalization of MIL-101(Cr) by aminated mesoporous silica and improved adsorption selectivity toward special metal ions

Xueping Quan,Zhongqiao Sun,Hao Meng,Yide Han,Junbiao Wu,Junli Xu,Yan Xu,Xia Zhang

Developing novel solid adsorbents with high efficiency and excellent selectivity is always an important target in the removal of toxic metal ions from waste water. In this study, a composite nano-adsorbent NH2-mSiO2@MIL-101(Cr) has been fabricated and applied in the efficient removal of Pb(II) and Cr(VI) for the first time. The nanocomposites were characterized by using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and thermal gravimetry analysis (TG). The results indicate that a typical core@shell structure has been fabricated by fully coating a mesoporous SiO2 shell over the micro/mesoporous MIL-101(Cr). As a result, the surface charge and the zeta potentials change significantly. Two toxic metal ions, namely, Pb(II) and Cr(VI) were chosen as the main adsorption targets to evaluate the surface adsorption activities. The adsorption conditions were optimized, the influences of other coexisting ions were explored, and the adsorption selectivity was investigated. Interestingly, the NH2-mSiO2@MIL-101(Cr) nanocomposites display a prominent adsorption activity compared with the original MIL-101(Cr) and non-aminated mSiO2@MIL-101(Cr) and excellent selectivity toward Pb(II) in the presence of other divalent metal ions. The adsorption kinetics and adsorption thermodynamics were simulated accordingly, and the enhanced adsorption mechanism was also suggested. The good reusability and adsorption selectivity of the NH2-mSiO2@MIL-101(Cr) suggest their potential applications in the selective removal of special metal ions such as Pb(II) from the waste water.
