Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a class of hazardous gases that are widely present in the atmosphere and cause great harm to human health. In this paper, a ratiometric fluorescent probe (Dye@Eu-MOFs) based on a dye-functionalized metal–organic framework was designed to detect VOCs, which showed high sensitivity and specificity for acetaldehyde solution and vapor. A linear correlation between the integrated fluorescence intensity (I510/I616) and the concentration of acetaldehyde was investigated, enabling a quantitative analysis of acetaldehyde in the ranges of 1 × 10−4~10−5μL/mL, with a low detection limit of 8.12 × 10−4mg/L. The selective recognition of acetaldehyde could be clearly distinguished by the naked eye under the excitation of UV light. The potential sensing mechanism was also discussed. Significantly, a molecular logic gate was constructed based on the whole system, and finally, a molecular logic network system for acetaldehyde detection connecting basic and integrated logic operations was realized. This strategy provided an effective guiding method for constructing a molecular-level logic gate for acetaldehyde detection on a simple platform.

Sample pretreatment prior to analysis is crucial for enhancing the quality of detection of target analytes. Herein, we propose a novel, easy-to-assemble continuous gas lift extraction device for the extraction of pharmaceutical pollutants. As a proof-of-concept, we assess the performance of the developed system through laboratory-scale experiments utilizing a homemade adsorbent. This device works by inserting an upright hollow cylindrical tube into the sample solution, with the upper end fitted with an air inlet and the lower end is equipped with a porous adsorbent. When gas is injected into the tube, the sample solution is circulated through the porous adsorbent driven by the pressure differential created by gas movement, thereby facilitating capture of target components within the sample solution. The adsorbent can be replaced based on the target molecule. We synthesize a type of porous adsorbent in the shape of a round cake, made from quartz sand that is surface-modified with a Zr-based metal–organic framework, using a solvothermal method. The experimental results indicate that the developed extraction method exhibits good performance with the limit of detections of 0.045–0.25 ng/mL, thereby demonstrating its potential for real-world applications.

The naphthalene tetracarboxdiimide (NDI) modified NH 2 -UiO-66(Zr) and NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr) (NDI/UZr and NDI/MCr for short) metal organic frameworks (MOFs) materials with strong covalent bond O C–N–C O were designed and prepared by solvothermal method. The comprehensive physical and chemical properties of the materials were characterized, and the adsorption and photocatalytic properties of the materials were evaluated by using methylene blue (MB) and Cr(VI) in single and mixture system. When the initial concentration of MB was 50 mg·L −1 , the photocatalytic degradation rate constant of NDI/MCr(2:1) was 10.3 and 13.8 times higher than that of NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr) and NDI/UZr(2:1), respectively. Additionally, NDI/MCr(2:1) exhibited 1.6 times higher reaction rate constant than that of NDI/UZr(2:1) for the removal of 10 mg∙L −1 Cr(VI). The enhanced adsorption and photocatalytic ability over NDI/MOFs were attributed to the MOFs larger specific surface area and wider spectral response, and NDI showed high electron affinity, superior charge carrier transport properties. Free radical and electron capture experiments indicated that h + , •O 2 − , and e − were the main active species in the NDI/MOFs system. Among them h + and •O 2 − played an essential role in the removal of MB, while e − and •O 2 − contributed to the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI). The mechanism of the photocatalytic process was discussed in detail.

The development of intelligent, sensitive, and visual methods for the rapid detection of veterinary drug residues is essential to ensure food quality and safety. Here, a smartphone-based dual inverse signal MOFs fluorescence sensing system was proposed for intelligent in-site visual detection of malachite green (MG). A UiO-66-NH 2 @RhB-dual-emission fluorescent probe was successfully synthesized in one step using a simple one-pot method. The inner filter effect (IFE) quenches the red fluorescence, while hydrogen bonding interaction enhances the blue fluorescence, enabling highly sensitive, accurate, and visual detection of MG dual inverse signals through fluorescence analysis. The probe showed great linearity over a wide range of 0.1–100 μmol/L, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 20 nmol/L. By integrating smartphone photography and RGB (red, green, and blue) analysis, accurate quantitative analysis of MG in water and actual fish samples can be achieved within 5 min. This developed platform holds great promise for the on-site detection of MG in practical applications, with the advantages of simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and rapidity. Consequently, it may open up a new pathway for on-site evaluation of food safety and environmental health .

In recent years, the global burden of gout has been increasing, and an excessively high level of blood uric acid is an important cause of gout attacks. The rapid detection of uric acid (UA) is of great significance for the auxiliary diagnosis of disease. We synthesized bifunctional Fe3Cu-MOFs that combined excellent peroxidase activity and fluorescence probe. UA reacts with uricase to generate H2O2, which could be catalyzed by the Fe3Cu-MOF to involve hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2). And these free radicals can oxidize o-phenylenediamine (OPD) to 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP) and the solution changes from colorless to yellow. Meanwhile, there is fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between DAP and Fe3Cu-MOF, resulting in the weakening of the blue fluorescence of Fe3Cu-MOF. Based on these mechanisms, we constructed a dual-mode sensor for UA detection. The detection ranges of the colorimetric method and the ratiometric fluorescence method of this sensor are 1–250 and 0.5–250 μM, respectively, and the limits of detection are 0.43 and 0.30 μM, respectively. These results indicate that the sensor has excellent sensitivity for UA detection. In addition, we have also successfully applied this sensor to the detection of UA content in human serum samples and urine samples.

Full-scale water electrolysis for hydrogen production represents a critical component of clean energy systems. This study introduces a novel MOFs-derived catalyst that achieves full water electrolysis performance comparable to commercial catalysts but at a significantly reduced cost, offering a promising alternative for hydrogen production via water electrolysis. The hydrothermal method was employed to incorporate citric acid into the ZIF8@ZIF67 metal-organic framework. Following carbonization, the resulting catalyst effectively exposed cobalt active sites and markedly enhanced the specific surface area. A thorough investigation was conducted into the structural features and electrocatalytic properties of the catalyst. The catalyst demonstrated superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activities, enabling highly efficient water electrolysis. At a current density of 10 mA cm⁻², the overpotential for OER was as low as 361 mV, while the HER overpotential was 168 mV. During overall water electrolysis, the catalyst achieved a voltage of 1.637 V, which is comparable to that of commercial catalysts (1.625 V).

Utilizing plastic wastes as linker sources for metal–organic framework (MOF) synthesis is a green and sustainable methodology for the chemical upcycling of plastics. However, improving the depolymerization efficiency of polymers and avoiding highly corrosive solvents during the purification of the products remain significant challenges. Herein, we propose an approach to efficiently hydrolyze practical poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) wastes using aqueous dispersions of ultrasmall ZnO (6 nm) nanoparticles as the catalysts and subsequently synthesize five typical nano-MOFs by one-pot and two-pot strategies. The neutral hydrolysis of PET is greatly accelerated, with PET being completely depolymerized at 200 °C in 60 min with a terephthalic acid yield of 95.6%. The PET-derived MOF nanoparticles present high BET surface areas that are higher than or close to those of congeneric MOFs synthesized from petroleum-based and highly purified ligands. As a water absorbent, the two-pot MIL-101(Cr) exhibits high thermal stability with a water uptake capacity of 1327.3 mg g−1. For photocatalytic degradation of antibiotic pollutants, MIL-53(Al, Fe) samples derived from PET textiles show a high tetracycline removal efficiency of over 90% within 60 min without additives in an aqueous system, outperforming most of the conventionally prepared MOF catalysts. This approach disposes of discarded plastics in an eco-friendly way and produces value-added materials with excellent catalysis and adsorption properties.

Modulating the morphology of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been identified as an effective strategy for enhancing the electrocatalytic performance of CO 2 reduction reactions (CO 2 RR). In this study, CAU-17 MOFs ([Bi(BTC)(H 2 O)]·2 H 2 O·MeOH) were prepared via a sonication-assisted method at room temperature, which is considered a simpler technique compared to the conventional hydrothermal method . Additionally, the morphology of CAU-17 MOFs was further regulated by incorporating a rare-earth metal (La), resulting in the observation of two distinct structures, i.e. CAU-17 hexagonal prism (CAU-17-HP) and CAU-17 layer (CAU-17-Layer). Compared to CAU-17-HP, CAU-17-Layer exhibits an excellent selectivity towards formate with the maximum Faradaic efficiency of 95.5% at − 1.1 V RHE in an H-cell. Subsequently, the limited catalytic activity of CAU-17-Layer was boosted by anchoring nano CeO 2 onto its surfaces (CeO 2 @CAU-17-Layer). The as-prepared composite catalyst demonstrated outstanding performance in the conversion of CO 2 to formate, with a current density surpassing − 100 mA cm -2 at potentials more negative than − 1.0 V RHE and reaching − 200 mA cm -2 at − 1.5 V RHE in a flow cell. This study demonstrates the significant potential of morphology-engineered and rare-earth metals composited MOFs in facilitating highly efficient reduction of CO 2 .

Due to their highly tunable structures and porous nature, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered substantial interest as versatile platforms for immobilizing noble metal nanoparticles in selective hydrogenation catalysis. However, the inherent limitations of MOFs, such as small micropores and weak interactions between inorganic nodes and guest noble metals (caused by organic ligands), often result in limited accessibility and the collapse of reactive sites. To overcome these challenges, this study focuses on a novel partial deligandation strategy and further, stabilizes the active Pt nanoparticles over it. Specifically, Ti-MOF-250 was synthesized by partially decomposing NH 2 –Ti-MIL-125 (Ti-MOF) at 250 °C, followed by the eco-friendly polyol reduction method to produce Pt/Ti-MOF-250 catalyst. Compared to the non-deliganded Ti-MOF, the Ti-MOF-250 catalyst, which retains residual organic ligands, exhibits a greater surface area, a hierarchical porous structure, and active defect sites that expose the unsaturated Ti metal centers. These features synergistically control the Pt particle size, enhance their uniform dispersion, and increase the number of exposed reactive sites. The distinctive structural properties of the Pt/Ti-MOF-250 catalyst enable unique furfural (FAL) adsorption geometries, achieving exceptional FAL conversion (97.4 %) and high selectivity (98.1 %) toward furfuryl alcohol (FOL). The partial deligandation approach paves the way to enhance the physicochemical properties of pristine MOFs, enabling the homogeneous confinement and stabilization of Pt nanoparticle catalysts to achieve exceptional catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability in hydrogenation reactions.

To effectively overcome the shortcomings of traditional chromatographic and enzymatic methods for detecting organophosphorus pesticides, Cu-MOFs with inherent peroxidase (POD)-like activity were constructed for direct colorimetric detection of omethoate (OMT). Benefiting from the mesoporous and benzene ring structure, Cu-MOFs demonstrated excellent OMT enrichment capability. OMT exhibited a pronounced inhibitory effect on the POD-like activity of Cu-MOFs whereas other pesticides showed negligible interference, demonstrating the specific identification of OMT by Cu-MOFs. Experimental data and theoretical calculations indicated that OMT effectively bond to Cu-MOFs through Cu 2+ coordination and ligand binding. Owning to its enrichment, identification and catalytic abilities, OMT detection was achieved and the limit of detection (LOD) was 16 μg L −1 . Furthermore, a smartphone-assisted portable detection was established with a LOD of 79 μg L −1 . Validation experiments of cabbage samples confirmed its’ reliability for practical applications. Our system integrated the enrichment, identification, and detection of OMT within a single system, improving both sensitivity and operational convenience.

Minocycline (MNC), as a second-generation semi-synthetic derivative of tetracycline, poses a potential carcinogenic threat to organisms in water, therefore high efficient removal of MNC is becoming a crucial key for water quality safety. This study has been successfully synthesized Ag/Ce bimetallic–doped MOF materials with diverse morphological characteristics by using microwave digestion and solvothermal methods, and it was demonstrated a significant adsorption potential in MNC from aqueous solutions. The characterization results were revealed that Ce exhibits oxygen vacancy enrichment as the central metal in MOFs, while Ag was distributed on carbon framework in the form of Ag 0 NPs, both of morphological features were provided more active sites for adsorption. The Ag/Ce–MOFs was achieved 98.26 % exceptional MNC adsorption efficiency at pH 9, which was followed a multilayer exothermic chemisorption mechanism. The results were shown that the maximum adsorption capacity of Ag/Ce-MOFs was 476.2 mg/g in Langmuir model, which was much more substantially surpassed than Ce–MOFs. In addition, the adsorption process was primarily mediated through hydrogen bonding, ligand interactions and amidation reactions.
