Despite metal-air batteries possessing very high theoretical energy densities, inefficient reversibility of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the oxygen electrode undermines their rechargeability, which has slowed their market entry. Herein, we demonstrate a simple procedure for synthesis of a hybrid of MnO and metallic Co supported on N-doped graphene that exhibits activity and stability as a bifunctional ORR/OER catalyst, with a round trip ORR/OER overvoltage of 0.85 V, which remained constant for at least 70 h when cycling alternately, between oxygen evolution at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and oxygen reduction at −1 mA cm−2. Insights into the key properties of the catalyst that influence its performance are proposed based on structural characterization by TEM, SEM, Raman spectroscopy, XRD and XPS. Besides MnO and metallic Co as the predominant crystalline species in the Co-Mn hybrid oxide, XPS revealed Mn3O4 and CoO rich surfaces, ascribed to oxidation of MnO and metallic Co due to atmospheric exposure. The synergetic interaction between the Co-Mn hybrid oxides and N-doped graphene, as well as Co-Mn interaction, favor improved ORR, OER and bifunctional ORR/OER performance of the catalyst.

Phenolic compounds have increasingly serious damage to the environment, and it is imperative to develop new detection means for them. In this study, Mn-doped ZnS quantum dot (Mn/ZnS QDs) were synthesized and conjugated with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) via its ligand N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) to form a bionanoconjugates with the phosphorescent response, named Mn/ZnS QDs-HRP. In the presence of a small amount of hydrogen peroxide, phenolic compounds can quench the phosphorescence of Mn/ZnS QDs-HRP, and the quenching type is speculated to be a synergistic effect of dynamic mechanism and internal filtration effect. Taking catechol as an experimental object, the phosphorescence signal of Mn/ZnS QDs-HRP showed a good linear correlation with the concentration of catechol, and the detection limit was 0.068 μM (S/N = 3). The strong anti-interference ability of room temperature phosphorescence endows the probe with excellent sensitivity, and the specific recognition performance of the enzyme makes it have excellent selectivity. Moreover, the probe exhibits good repeatability and stability. When used for actual sample detection, Mn/ZnS QDs-HRP provides stable and reliable quantification of catechol in different water samples with spiked recoveries of 92.3–104.4 %. This study provides a sensitive, convenient, and efficient phosphorescent response sensor for detecting phenolic compounds, which is of positive significance for environmental protection.

CeO 2 nanozymes have garnered significant attention in chemodynamic therapy due to their peroxidase-like activity and ability to deplete glutathione. However, their catalytic efficiency is constrained by the low conversion rate of Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ . To overcome this limitation, the electron transfer was accelerated by introducing the transition metal Mn atom as a valence electron donor through lattice charge transfer. In detail, we introduced Ce 1-x Mn x O 2 into the poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) scaffold fabricated by selective laser sintering. The conversion from Ce 3+ to Ce 4+ promoted the decomposition of H 2 O 2 within the tumor microenvironment to generate hydroxyl radicals with high oxidative activity, consequently inducing oxidative stress. The conversion from Ce 4+ to Ce 3+ depleted intracellular antioxidant glutathione, disrupting redox balance in tumor cells. This continuous redox cycle ultimately triggered apoptosis in tumor cells. Using a first-principles Hubbard-corrected approximate density-functional method, the analysis of the electron band structure revealed the presence of donor energy levels within the bandgap of Ce 1-x Mn x O 2 , enabling electron transfer channels around 0.645 eV. Electrochemical experiments confirmed that Ce 0.8 Mn 0.2 O 2 significantly reduced the activation overpotential from 0.907 V to 0.646 V, enhancing its redox capacity. As a result, the scaffold exhibited a threefold increase in tumor-killing rate. These findings highlight the immense potential of CeO 2 nanozymes in enhancing chemodynamic therapy for effective tumor treatment.

To enhance biocompatibility and physiological stability of hydrophobic MnO nanoparticles as contrast agent of T 1 -weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), dopamine-functionalized poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) was used to coat the surface of about 5 nm MnO nanoparticles. Although hydrophilic coating might decrease longitudinal relaxivity due to inhibiting the intimate contact between manganese of nanoparticle surface and proton in water molecules, higher longitudinal relaxivity was still maintained by manipulating the PEGylation degree of MnO nanoparticles. Moreover, in vivo MRI demonstrated considerable signal enhancement in liver and kidney using PEGylated MnO nanoparticles. Interestedly, the PEGylation induced the formation of about 120 nm clusters with high stability in storing and physiological conditions, indicating passive targeting potential to tumor and prolonged circulation in blood. In addition, the cytotoxicity of PEGylated MnO nanoparticles also proved negligible. Consequently, the convenient PEGylation strategy toward MnO nanoparticles could not only realize a good “trade-off” between hydrophilic modification and high longitudinal relaxivity but also contribute additional advantages, such as passive targeting to tumor and long blood circulation, to MRI diagnosis of tumor. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Mimetics of superoxide dismutases (SOD), with certain ability to eliminate superoxide radicals under aerobic conditions, would be promising as drug candidates for antioxidant therapy. Many efforts have been devoted to synthesize small molecular compounds to mimic the functionality of natural SOD. In this paper, the Mn(III)/Co(III)/Fe(III) complexes have been synthesized with the Schiff base ligand (NaH 2 L), which was condensed from 2-hydroxynaphthalen-1-naphthaldehyde and 3,4-diaminobenzenesulfonic acid. The structures of complexes 1 and 3 have been determined by X-ray crystallographic method, and all the complexes have been investigated using FT-IR, MS. The binding constants between metal complexes and bovine serum albumin (BSA) have been determined by fluorescence spectroscopy. Meanwhile, we have synthesized 3 hybrid proteins through the interaction of the complexes and BSA. The SOD-like activity was tested by xanthine/xanthine oxidase method. The result shows that BSA molecule can increase the SOD activity of the transition metal complexes.

A high-efficient, low-cost, and eco-friendly catalyst is highly desired to activate peroxides for environmental remediation. Due to the potential synergistic effect between bimetallic oxides’ two different metal cations, these oxides exhibit superior performance in the catalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). In this work, novel Mn1.8Fe1.2O4 nanospheres were synthesized and used to activate PMS for the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA), a typical refractory pollutant. The catalytic performance of the Mn1.8Fe1.2O4 nanospheres was substantially greater than that of the Mn/Fe monometallic oxides and remained efficient in a wide pH range from 4 to 10. More importantly, a synergistic effect between solid-state Mn and Fe was identified in control experiments with Mn3O4 and Fe3O4. Mn was inferred to be the primary active site in the surface of the Mn1.8Fe1.2O4 nanospheres, while Fe(III) was found to play a key role in the synergism with Mn by acting as the main adsorption site for the reaction substrates. Both sulfate and hydroxyl radicals were generated in the PMS activation process. The intermediates of BPA degradation were identified and the degradation pathways were proposed. This work is expected to help to elucidate the rational design and efficient synthesis of bimetallic materials for PMS activation.

We presented a homogeneous heparin-mediated fluorescence anisotropy (FA) assay of antithrombin (AT) based on long-lived luminescent polyethyleneimine capped Mn-doped ZnS (PEI-Mn-ZnS) QDs. The PEI-Mn-ZnS QDs with long lifetime luminescence at 585 nm displayed a very low background of FA value, which was very helpful for FA assaying of large molecules. The medium heparin was crucial for AT determination, and different heparin amounts resulted in different linear range of detection and sensitivity. For example, the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.9 nM AT with a detection linear range from 8.6 nM to 21.5 nM was found when the heparin concentration was 75 μM. The proposed method also exhibited high selectivity over the coexisting or related proteins such as human serum albumin and thrombin.

Discrimination of glycoproteins with different glycans is a significant but difficult issue. We presented here a new strategy for strengthening the discrimination of glycoproteins by introducing a new signaling channel, fluorescence polarization (FP), into a “single probe with three signaling channels” sensor array. The single probe was aminophenylboronic-acid-conjugated poly(acrylic acid)–Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots, and the three signaling channels were FP, room temperature phosphorescence and light scattering. Ten glycoproteins, including ovalbumin, fibrinogen, transferrin, horseradish peroxidase, vascular endothelial growth factor, immunoglobulin G, avidin, hyaluronidase, cellulase R-10, and glucose oxidase, were involved for evaluating the discriminating capability. The introduction of the FP signaling channel improved the discriminating power of the sensor array, so that the 10 glycoproteins at 0.15 μM could be well discriminated both in PBS buffer and in the presence of human serum sample. The identification accuracy of the unknown samples was 96.25% (77 out of 80) at the 0.15 μM level and 97.50% (78 out of 80) at the 0.2 μM level. The integration of the signaling patterns with different responsive principles was demonstrated as the promising way to enhance the discrimination power of the single-probe-based sensor arrays.

Catalytic oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) feedstock to value-added chemical 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) is of great importance in biomass valorization. However, it is still challenging to develop non-noble metal-based catalysts for high selectivity of DFF due to the coexistence of other undesired derivatives. In this study, Mn x Mg 1-x SnO 3 was prepared by Mn incorporating into the crystalline lattice of MgSnO 3 , triggering synergetic catalysis for selective aerobic oxidation of HMF to DFF. Among polymetallic oxides with varying Mn-Mg molar ratios, Mn 0.67 Mg 0.33 SnO 3 (Mn/Mg ratio = 2:1) exhibited the best catalytic activity with DFF yield of 80.6 % and selectivity of 87.5 % at 160 °C for 6 h. It is revealed by various characterization analysis that Mn species in Mn 0.67 Mg 0.33 SnO 3 could not only act as active sites directly but also promote the transformation of oxygen into singlet oxygen for HMF oxidation. Furthermore, the used Mn 0.67 Mg 0.33 SnO 3 catalyst could be successfully reactivated through a straightforward two-step regeneration method involving impregnation followed by calcination, demonstrating remarkable stability.

In the zinc production industry using Mn-rich zinc ore, substantial quantities of anodic slime are generated during electrolytic zinc production, containing ∼ 40 % Mn and ∼ 3 % Pb. While a valuable secondary resource, this material poses environmental risks as solid waste. Conventional reductive leaching methods rely on costly reductants and generate high carbon emissions. This study introduces a process utilizing flue gas from zinc plants as a reductant, achieving 92 % Mn leaching efficiency while simultaneously extracting 25 % Sr and fixing 92 % SO 2 as sulfate in solution. Kinetic analysis shows a mixed control model with an activation energy of 13.83 kJ/mol, with reaction rates further enhanced by optimizing gas inlet design. The MnSO 4 -rich leachate is processed into battery-grade MnSO 4 powder, and Sr is recovered as SrCO 3 , suitable for use as an additive in electrolytic zinc processes. Additionally, NaOH consumption for flue gas desulfurization decreases significantly from 2.14 kg to 0.17 kg per Nm 3 . Economic evaluation indicates reagent costs represent only 2 % of the total value of MnSO 4 and SrCO 3 products, offering a sustainable pathway for anodic slime utilization and SO 2 mitigation in zinc smelting.
