Ni–Mo Interfacial Electronic Transfer and Acid-Site Coupling Drive Carbon-Backbone-Retentive Hydrodeoxygenation of Fatty Acid Esters under Mild Conditions

Zihang Wang,Yujing Wu,Jinliang Yan,Zhiyu Li,Hui Zhou,Peng Fu

Biodiesel, a renewable and carbon-neutral fuel, offers a sustainable alternative to petroleum diesel. However, its widespread application is hindered by the need for energy-intensive deoxygenation processes that often degrade the carbon backbone of fatty acid esters. This study presents a non-noble NiMo/HBeta bifunctional catalyst for the complete conversion of methyl stearate under mild conditions (190 °C), achieving 92.53% selectivity toward C18 alkanes and a high HDO/DCO (hydrodeoxygenation/(decarboxylation + decarbonylation)) ratio of 12.38, outperforming previously reported catalytic systems. Mechanistic insight reveals that atomically dispersed Ni δ+ –MoO x sites enable directed electron transfer from Ni to Mo. This creates a synergistic interface where Ni activates H 2 while Mo polarizes the C=O bond, lowering the barrier of the HDO pathway to 1.76 eV and kinetically favoring carbon-retentive deoxygenation. Concurrently, Mo reshapes the acid properties by suppressing strong Brønsted sites, establishing a Lewis-acid-dominated microenvironment that selectively cleaves C–O bonds while inhibiting C–C scission. This work elucidates how interfacial electronic synergy and tailored acidity cooperatively steer reaction pathways, offering a design principle for efficient biomass upgrading under mild conditions.

Highly Efficient Anti-CO Poisoning Catalyst By Coupling Mo 4d–Ce 4f Electronic States to Regulate the Electronic Structure of Pt

Jiaqi Cheng,Junting Yang,Ge Qi,Yuwei Ma,Jinxiao Bao,Qingchun Wang

This work presents a novel strategy for improving the anti-CO poisoning performance of Pt-based catalysts by coupling the electronic states of Mo 4d and Ce 4f to modulate the Pt electronic structure. The introduction of Mo into CeO2 creates a composite support (Mo-CeOx) that induces electron redistribution at the Pt/CeO2 interface, inducing the electronic structure modulation of Pt, thereby influencing the Pt–CO interaction. This electronic tuning not only enhances Pt’s CO tolerance but also promotes charge transfer and improves catalyst stability. Density functional theory calculations and experimental data reveal that Mo doping decreases the formation energy of oxygen vacancies, facilitating Pt stabilization and the generation of active sites. The resulting Pt/Mo-CeOx/rGO catalyst exhibits significantly enhanced methanol oxidation reaction activity, with a mass activity 4.67 times higher than that of the undoped counterpart, alongside excellent CO poisoning resistance and long-term stability. This work introduces a new paradigm for designing highly efficient and durable Pt-based catalysts by leveraging electronic state engineering, offering a powerful approach for tackling CO poisoning in electrocatalysis.

Synergistic Optimization in Ru-Sensitized Mo-WO3 Nanosheets for Ultrasensitive ppb-Level H2S Sensing and Real-Time Wireless Oral Health Monitoring

Jie Hu,Yong Chen,Xuni Yin,Qi Zeng,Chang Chen,Jiu Yin

Although metal oxide semiconductors are promising candidates for practical disease diagnosis based on H2S detection, achieving high sensitivity and a low detection limit remains a considerable challenge. In this work, Ru-functionalized Mo-doped WO3 (Ru@Mo-WO3) nanosheets were successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal process followed by annealing and chemical reduction. The H2S sensing performances of all WO3-based sensors were systematically investigated. The optimized Ru@Mo-WO3 sensor exhibited a remarkable response of 120 to 5 ppm H2S at the optimal operating temperature, which was approximately 30 times higher than that of pristine WO3. Moreover, the Ru@Mo-WO3 sensor demonstrates short response times, excellent H2S selectivity, and remarkable long-term stability with a low detection limit (7.9 ppb). Comprehensive experimental analyses and density functional theory (DFT) simulations reveal that the significant enhancement in sensing performance originates from the synergistic effects of Mo doping and Ru sensitization. Meanwhile, a wireless gas-detection device based on the as-fabricated Ru@Mo-WO3 gas sensor was developed to achieve real-time monitoring of oral H2S for noninvasive oral hygiene assessment. This study offers a promising strategy for the rational design of high-performance WO3-based H2S sensors.

A novel method to prepare composite MoSi2 coatings on Mo substrate: Microstructure, oxidation behavior and anti-oxidation mechanism at 1500 °C

Feng Jiang,Chenchen Li,Xiang Ling

Molybdenum (Mo) is a promising structural material for ultra-high temperature applications, but its catastrophic oxidative degradation remains a critical bottleneck. Conventional single-layer silicide coatings often fail prematurely due to either weak interfacial adhesion (spallation) or insufficient long-term structural stability (cracking). To overcome these limitations, a novel dual-layer composite coating was developed in this study. An inner Mo-Si diffusion layer (∼90 μm) was first fabricated by pack cementation process to ensure robust metallurgical bonding with the Mo substrate. Subsequently, an anti-oxidative outer layer (∼98 μm) containing MoSi 2 , boron and quartz was deposited using slurry sintering technique. Isothermal oxidation tests revealed that the composite coating exhibited excellent protective performance at 1500 °C in air, with only minimal mass loss of 0.178 mg/cm 2 after 9 h. Microstructural analysis demonstrated that bidirectional Si diffusion dynamically transformed the coating into a highly stable gradient structure of SiO 2 -Mo 5 Si 3 -MoSi 2 -Mo 5 Si 3 during high-temperature exposure. The superior oxidation resistance was attributed to a synergistic anti-oxidation mechanism: the inner layer physically anchored the coating to prevent spallation, while the outer layer continuously generated a B 2 O 3 -fluxed fluid borosilicate glass phase that effectively sealed microcracks and pores. This work provides an effective architectural design strategy for developing high-performance oxidation-resistant coatings on refractory metals in ultra-high temperature environments.

Ni-Mo alloy anchored on carbon nitride coated γ-Al2O3 for hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenols into aviation fuel-range cycloalkanes

Zifan Wu,Lu Chen,Yacong Deng,Fengyu Tian,Guangzheng Sun,Yuting Qiu,Yichuan Li,Yuan Pan,Bin Liu,Bin Dong,Yongming Chai

Lignin-derived phenols, with their high energy density and rich aromatic structure, are potentially high-quality feedstocks for the production of aviation fuel-range cycloalkanes. Herein, we fabricated a Ni Mo alloy catalyst anchored on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) coated γ-Al 2 O 3 (10Ni-5Mo/CN@γ-Al 2 O 3 ), which could completely hydrodeoxygenate various lignin-derived phenols into cycloalkanes under mild conditions. 10Ni-5Mo/CN@γ-Al 2 O 3 significantly catalyzed the hydrodeoxygenation of lignin oil at 240 °C under 3 MPa H 2 for 8 h, achieving a deoxygenation degree of 96.5 % and a high propylcyclohexane selectivity (41.8 %), and the resulting products met the requirements for aviation fuels. The study results showed that electron transfer within Ni Mo alloys and the strong interaction between g-C 3 N 4 and surface anchored Ni Mo alloys in 10Ni-5Mo/CN@γ-Al 2 O 3 facilitated the dissociation of H 2 into active hydrogen to hydrogenate the aromatic rings. Meanwhile, the formation of oxygen vacancies enhanced the adsorption and activation ability of the catalyst for oxygen-containing substrates, which was beneficial for the demethoxylation and dehydroxylation reactions. This work provides a new strategy for constructing supported non-noble metal catalysts for the hydrodeoxygenation of lignin oil into aviation fuels.

Effects of various rare earth oxides on morphology and size of oxide dispersion strengthening (ODS)-W and ODS-Mo alloy powders

He ZHANG,Zhi-bo LI,Xiao-chun DENG,Ben CHEN,Guo-hua ZHANG,Kuo-Chih CHOU

Ultrafine oxide dispersion strengthening (ODS)-Mo and ODS-W alloy powders containing different types of oxide nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by spraying method (solid−liquid mixing method) combined with the reductions with carbon black and hydrogen in sequence. It is concluded that the solution concentration and type of rare earth oxide have no effect on the grain size of ODS-Mo alloy powder, but have obvious effect on that of ODS-W alloy powder. The higher the concentration of rare earth solution is, the smaller the average grain size of ODS-W alloy powder is. Furthermore, compared with doping with CeO 2 , the grain sizes of reduction products of La 2 O 3 and Y 2 O 3 doped WO 3 are relatively larger. Compared with the undoped case, there is almost no change for grain size of ODS-Mo alloy powder, while the grain size of ODS-W alloy powder becomes much larger. This is probably due to the appearance of the composite oxide (such as La 2 WO 6 ) formed by the reaction between tungsten oxide and rare earth oxides, which promotes the heterogeneous nucleation and growth of tungsten grains during the reduction process of ODS-W, while there is no complex oxide composed of molybdenum and rare earth oxides in the reduction process of ODS-Mo.

Novel red phosphors KBaEu(XO4)3 (X = Mo, W) show high color purity and high thermostability from a disordered chained structure

G. Q. Wang,X. H. Gong,Y. J. Chen,J. H. Huang,Y. F. Lin,Z. D. Luo,Y. D. Huang

Two novel red phosphors KBaEu(XO4)3 (X = Mo, W) have been synthesized by high-temperature solid-state reactions and the crystal structures were determined for the first time. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data reveal that their space groups are C2/c. The crystalline structure is constituted of K/BaO8 distorted square antiprisms and distorted EuO8 polyhedra which form chains lying along the c-axis and two kinds of distorted XO4 tetrahedra. This high disorder of K/Ba which might lower the crystal field symmetry around Eu3+ results in the high purity of red emission around 615 nm originating from 5D0 → 7F2 transition under near-ultraviolet (NUV) excitation. With increasing temperature, the luminescence of KBaEu(XO4)3 (X = Mo, W) phosphors decreases almost linearly with subtle alteration for the CIE coordinate. As the temperature reaches 550 K, the red emission intensity decreases to 37.3% and 50.7% of that at 300 K for KBaEu(MoO4)3 and KBaEu(WO4)3, respectively. The analysis of the decay curves of the 5D0 → 7F2 emission at variable temperatures indicates the weak cross relaxation and non-radiative energy transfer between Eu3+ ions. These results demonstrate that the investigated phosphors are attractive for application in high power NUV excited white LEDs.

Orbital hybridization and adsorption modulating in Mo/P co-doped Ni3S2 enables superior urea-assisted water electrolysis at industrial current density

Jie Sun,Nan Zhao,Jianjiao Xin,Miao Yu,Chunmei Lv,Yanqing Jiao,Xiuwen Wang

Rational designing a robust bifunctional electrocatalyst for urea-assisted water splitting (UWS) toward a carbon-neutral economy is imperative factor to address the energy-intensive challenges of sustainable hydrogen production at industrial current densities. In this study, a Mo/P co-doped Ni 3 S 2 one-dimensional nanoarray, decorated with two-dimensional nanosheets (MP-Ni 3 S 2 ), is synthesized using an in-situ growth method. The optimized MP-Ni 3 S 2 exhibits a significant advantage in the urea oxidation reaction (UOR), achieving much lower potentials (1.346 V at 100 mA cm −2 and 1.505 V at 1000 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M + 0.33 M urea) comparable to the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which requires 302 mV and 445 mV at the same current densities. The MP-Ni 3 S 2 ||MP-Ni 3 S 2 electrolyzer reduces the cell voltage from 2.146 V for overall water splitting (OWS) to 1.856 V for UWS at 500 mA cm −2 , surpassing most reported catalysts. Theocratical calculations demonstrate that Mo and P doping in Ni 3 S 2 , through the hybridization of Mo/Ni 3d and N/O 2p orbitals, effectively accelerates UOR kinetics by lowering the energy barrier in dehydrogenation and N-N coupling processes, while P doping optimizes the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption (ΔG H* ) to enhance HER activity, thereby synergistically improving overall performance. These findings offer a viable strategy for the development of energy-saving hydrogen production.

Strong d-p covalent interaction of Mo-P bonds within phosphorus lattice-doped MoS2 boosts visible-light photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline

Zhongjian Wang,Guojun Lv,Jingbo Wang,Zhuoran Zhang,Yuhan Jiang,Yangbin Shen

The strong d-p covalent interaction of Mo-P bonds was obtained. • Lattice doping of P into MoS 2 formed Mo-P bonds in 0.2P-MoS 2. • 0.2P-MoS 2 achieved 91.7% tetracycline degradation under LED irradiation. Antibiotic pollution in water calls for sustainable remediation approaches such as photocatalysis. Despite its promising structure and visible-light response, MoS 2 is hindered by rapid carrier recombination, which severely restrict its photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, we reported a strategy of lattice phosphorus doping into MoS 2 to modulate the electronic structure, broaden visible-light absorption, and facilitate charge separation and migration. The optimized 0.2P-MoS 2 achieved 91.7% degradation of tetracycline (30 mg/L) within 80 min under low-power LED irradiation, with a reaction rate constant 5.5-fold higher than pristine MoS 2 . The superior photocatalytic degradation activity for 0.2P-MoS 2 arises from the narrowest band gap (1.21 eV) and accelerated charge carrier migration originated from the strong d-p covalent interactions in the generated Mo-P bonds. Radical scavenging experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance characterizations identified superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ) and holes (h⁺) as the dominant reactive species. Furthermore, possible photocatalytic degradation pathways of tetracycline were proposed over the 0.2P-MoS 2 catalyst. Moreover, the 0.2P-MoS 2 catalyst maintained high activity after five consecutive cycles, demonstrating its excellent stability. This work offers an electronic structure engineering perspective for rational design of MoS 2 -based photocatalysts and provides a viable approach for antibiotic degradation under low-power light sources, holding substantial promise for environmental remediation. Importance of surface peroxo species in the epoxidation of cyclohexene by Mo-doped TS-1 and O2 under solvent-free conditions

Yu-Le Wang,Songhai Wu,Yu-Zhen Xu,Yu-Dong Shan,Yong Liu,Xu Han

The selective oxidation of cyclohexene (Cy) to cyclohexene oxide (Cy-ep) using O2 remains challenging due to low epoxidation selectivity. In this work, a series of Mo-doped TS-1 (Mo-TS-1) catalysts were successfully synthesized for the epoxidation of Cy under solvent- and initiator-free conditions with O2 as the oxidant. Among them, 5Mo-TS-1 exhibited high catalytic performance, achieving 43.5% Cy conversion and 50.6% selectivity toward Cy-ep. Additionally, valuable byproducts such as 2-cyclohexen-1-ol (Cy-ol) and 2-cyclohexen-1-one (Cy-one) were obtained with yields of 28.0% and 21.4%, respectively. Since both Cy-ol and Cy-one are valuable intermediates in fragrance synthesis, over 43.5% of Cy was effectively converted into high-value products. Quenching experiments and Raman spectroscopy revealed that surface oxygen vacancies (Ov) facilitate the activation of O2 to form ≡Ov‑superoxo species, which abstract hydrogen from the allylic C-H bond of Cy to generate 3-cyclohexenyl radicals (Cy•). These radicals subsequently react with O2 to form Cy-OO•, followed by hydrogen abstraction from another Cy molecule to yield 2-cyclohexene-1-hydroperoxide (Cy-OOH). A positive correlation between Cy-OOH and Cy-ep formation underscores the critical role of Cy-OOH in the epoxidation process. Furthermore, Raman spectroscopy confirmed the presence of ≡Mo-(η2-O2) peroxo species on the catalyst surface, which preferentially attack the C=C bond of Cy to form Cy-ep. DFT calculations elucidated two distinct O2 activation pathways: In Pathway I, O2 is activated at Ov sites to form ≡Ov‑superoxo, which subsequently reacts with Cy to generate ≡Ov‑peroxo, Cy-OOH, and Cy•. In Pathway II, Mo(V/VI) sites either directly activate O2 or react with peroxo intermediates (≡Ov‑peroxo or Cy-OOH) to form ≡Mo-(η2-O2). This species selectively epoxidizes the alkene bond in Cy to Cy-ep. Notably, the direct activation of O2 at Mo(V/VI) sites bypasses the allylic oxidation route, thereby enhancing the epoxidation selectivity beyond the theoretical limit of 50.0%. This study provides new insight on the importance of surface superoxo and peroxo mediated by Ov and Mo(V/VI) in the epoxidation processes.

Mo or W doping into the surface of BiVO4 film photoanodes through a photoelectrochemical treating approach for efficient solar water oxidation

Gaili Ke,Feng Duan,Binyao Liu,Xiaotian Liu,Jinyu Wen,Bi Jia,Xiaoyan Liu,Huichao He,Yong Zhou

In theory, suitable metal ions doping into the surface of BiVO 4 photoanodes could improve its water oxidation performance effectively. But the common homogeneous reaction strategy is not well applicable for the preparation of BiVO 4 film photoanodes with metal ions surface doping. Herein, a photoelectrochemical treating approach was reported to prepare BiVO 4 films with W or Mo surface doping in saturated tungstate and molybdate-containing electrolyte, respectively. The doping of W or Mo into the surface of BiVO 4 film was attributed to the following reactions. Firstly, the photocorrosion of BiVO 4 film photoelectrodes resulted in the dissolution of VO 4 3+ from BiVO 4 lattice under AM 1.5 G illumination. Then, the WO 4 2+ or MoO 4 2+ in the saturated electrolyte entered and occupied the dissolved sites of VO 4 3+ on BiVO 4 surface through ions exchange reaction . Due to the lower radiative recombination of carrier as well as higher electrocatalytic water oxidation activity, the resultant W or Mo doped BiVO 4 films as photoanodes showed better solar water oxidation activity, kinetics and stability, although their light harvesting property and morphological feature were close to the pristine BiVO 4 film photoanode. The present work provides a new and effective approach for the achievement of metal ions doping into the surface of BiVO 4 photoanodes, which could inspire the preparation of similar photoanode materials.

Effects of oxygen vacancies on electric properties of high valence ions Mo/Zr/Ti doped Bi0.85Nd0.15FeO3 ceramics with morphotropic phase boundary

Jingxin Tian,Hongjun Zhang,Liwei Zhang,Dongliang Wang,Yong Huang,Elena Balashova,Boris Krichevtsov,Hua Ke

The effects of oxygen vacancies on electric properties of high valence ions (Mo/Zr/Ti) doped Bi 0.85 Nd 0.15 FeO 3 (marked as BNFM, BNFZ, BNFT) ceramics with morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) are investigated. MPB structures consisting of rhombohedral, intermediate and orthorhombic phases exist in all samples, which is confirmed by the XRD Rietveld refinements and TEM analyses. The BNFT has the maximum remnant polarization of 34.5 μC/cm 2 at 180 kV/cm, owing to its lowest paraelectric orthorhombic phase content. XPS and impedance results reveal that the BNFT ceramic has the relatively low oxygen vacancy contents and the largest impedance value, which is beneficial for the ferroelectric test. The best comprehensive properties of BNFT open wide prospects for improving BiFeO 3 -based ceramics.
