Solid-state sodium batteries offer new opportunities for emerging applications with sensitivity to safety and cost. However, the prevailing composite electrolyte structure, as a core component, is still poorly conductive to Na ions. Herein, a 3D architecture design of Na + conductive Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 framework is introduced to in situ compound with polymer electrolyte, subtly inducing an anion-enriched interface that acts as rapid ion immigration channel. Multiple continuous and fast Na + transport pathways are built via the amorphization of polymer matrix, the consecutive skeleton, and the induced anion-adsorbed interface, resulting in a high ionic conductivity of 4.43 × 10 −4 S·cm −1 . Notably, the design of 3D skeleton not only enables the content of inorganic part exceeds 60 wt% without any sign of agglomeration, but also endows the composite electrolyte reach a high transference number of 0.61 by immobilizing the anions. The assembled quasi-solid-state cells exhibit high practical safety and can stably work for over 1500 cycles with 83.1% capacity retention. This tactic affords new insights in designing Na + conductive composite electrolytes suffering from slow ion immigration for quasi-solid-state sodium batteries. Graphical abstract

Conversion-type selenium cathodes are considered a highly promising alternative to sulfur cathodes due to their high conductivity and similar theoretical capacity. However, stress-diffusion and shuttle effects during the conversion process remain significant challenges that urgently need to be addressed. Herein, a composite matrix of MoSe 2 anchored on the surface of N -doped hollow mesoporous carbon nanospheres (NHMCNS) was designed as a Se host to construct Se/C cathodes (Se/MoSe 2 @NHMCNS). Anchored MoSe 2 successfully mitigated selenium loss by enhancing the chemisorption of polyselenides within the matrix. Meanwhile, polyselenides adsorbed on the Se/C cathode surface exhibit lower diffusion barriers and more negative Gibbs free energy during the conversion from chain polyselenides to Na 2 Se. MoSe 2 accelerated the catalytic conversion of polyselenides to the final discharge products from both kinetic and thermodynamic perspectives. The huge stress induced by structural transformation during the conversion process is mitigated by MoSe 2 synergistic carbon walls, which effectively maintain the structural stability of the cathode. Based on this three-in-one strategy, the sodium-selenium battery assembled with Se/MoSe 2 @NHMCNS exhibits stable cycling performance (400.6 mAh g −1 at 2C after 500 cycles), and the pouch battery also demonstrates good practical performance.

Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) exhibit high theoretical capacity as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, their practical application is severely hindered by poor cycling stability. In this study, Co 3 S₄/1T-MoS₂ heterostructure was confined on nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets composite (Co 3 S₄/1T-MoS₂@NC) by high-temperature pyrolysis and hydrothermal sulfidation, using ZIF-67 as the precursor, modulated by a small-molecule carbon source. The heterostructure between Co 3 S₄ and 1T-MoS₂ synergistically enhances the electrical conductivity and rapid diffusion kinetics. The aggregation of MoS 2 nanosheets at the interface effectively enhances the electrochemical performance of the material, while the nitrogen-doped carbon generated at the interface provides additional active sites. This interface engineering and the formation of heterostructures endow the material with improved ion storage capabilities. The composite remains high specific capacities of 1192.2 mAh g⁻¹ for LIBs and 615.3 mAh g -1 for SIBs after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g -1 . The combination of enhanced charge transport and structural stability highlights the potential of the heterostructure strategy for next-generation high-performance alkali metal-ion batteries.

High-voltage and low-cost manganese-based P 2-type oxides show real promise as promising cathode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). But the P 2 − O2 phase transformation and Na + /vacancy ordering results in the inferior structural stability and Na + diffusion coefficient , which further leads to rapid decay of capacity and poor rate capability. Herein, in consideration of the synergetic effects of dual cationic doping, electrochemically inactive Li + and active Co 3+ codoping are proposed to solve the above issues. The novel two-step doping strategy, Co doping during synthesis of precursors via coprecipitation reaction followed by Li doping during solid-state reaction, are rationally developed. As anticipated, the Li/Co codoped P 2-type oxide exhibits the absence of P 2 − O2 phase transformation and Na + /vacancy disordering, which gives rise to an outstanding cycling stability (86.7% capacity retention within 100 cycles at 0.1C) and high-rate capability (reversible capacity of 109 mAh g −1 even at 10C). In addition, the full-cells composed of the codoped P 2-type positive and hard carbon negative show high energy-density, good lifespan and high-rate property. This proposed cationic codoping provides an effective and scalable tactics for modulating the structural properties of high-voltage P 2-type cathodes for advanced SIBs.

Metal nanoparticles encapsulated in zeolite have been recently developed as a special type of catalyst that shows significant advantages in activity, shape-selectivity, and stability over conventional supported catalysts. The selectivity modulation of encapsulated nanoparticle catalysis by the zeolite microenvironment is theoretically possible but not addressed yet. Here, we report the in situ encapsulation of sub-nanometric palladium species within MFI-type zeolites, which exhibit high activity and good stability in the hydroconversion of furfural as a model reaction of biomass upgrading. Remarkably, different products, e.g., furan, furfural alcohol, and 1,5-pentanediol, from furfural hydroconversion can be obtained when silicalite-1, Na-ZSM-5, and H-ZSM-5 are employed as hosts of palladium nanoparticles, respectively. Density functional theory calculations and spectroscopy investigations reveal that both the adsorption of furfural and the activation of hydrogen are significantly affected by the zeolite microenvironment, leading to different reaction pathways. Our work presents an elegant example of catalytic selectivity modulation of encapsulated metal nanoparticles by tuning the zeolite microenvironment.

Peroxidase (POD)-mimicking nanozymes have got great progress in the sensing field, but most nanozyme assaying systems are built with a single-signal output mode, which is vulnerable to the effect of different factors. Thus, establishment of a dual-signal output mode is necessary for acquiring dependable and durable performance. This work described an Fe doped noradrenaline-based carbon dots and Prussian blue (Fe,NA-CDs/PB) nanocomposite as a POD-like nanozyme and modified gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for the colorimetric and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) dual-mode sensor of Pb(II) in traditional Chinese medicine samples. With 2,2′-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) and 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) as the substrates, it was found that the addition of Pb(II) inhibited the POD-like activity of Fe,NA-CDs/PB and AuNPs, so it was used for colorimetric and SERS dual-mode assays. The POD-like activity was shown to be a “ping-pong” catalytic mechanism, whereas the addition of Pb(II) produced noncompetitive inhibition with modulatory effects on Fe,NA-CDs/PB. The linear response range for colorimetric and SERS sensor detection of Pb(II) was 0.01–1.00 mg/L with the detection limit of 5 μg/L and 8 μg/L, respectively. This dual-mode detection system shows excellent selectivity. More importantly, the Pb(II) in traditional Chinese medicine samples have successfully assayed with good recovery from 90.4 to 108.9 %.

The development of high-performance narrowband near-infrared second window (NIR-II) phosphors remains a critical challenge in the fields of advanced bioimaging and optical thermometry. Herein, a series of Mn 5+ -doped ABaPO 4 (A = Li, Na, K) phosphors are synthesized via conventional solid-state method, and the effect of A-site alkali metal cations on their crystal structure and luminescence properties is comparatively investigated. Mn K -edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy unambiguously confirms that Mn ions are predominantly stabilized in the +5 oxidation state and exclusively occupy tetrahedral [PO 4 ] sites in all three hosts. All samples exhibit characteristic narrowband NIR-II emission in the 1160-1200 nm range originating from the 1 E → 3 A 2 spin-forbidden transition of Mn 5+ . The lattice distortion induced by different A-site cations significantly modulates the doping limit, crystal field strength, thermal stability and temperature sensing performance of Mn 5+ ions. All three Mn 5+ -doped hosts exhibit good thermal stability. The fluorescence decay lifetime of LiBaPO 4 : Mn 5+ reaches 772.436 μs NaBaPO 4 : Mn 5+ shows unique energy level splitting and achieves a maximum relative temperature sensitivity of 2.43% K −1 based on the fluorescence intensity ratio technique. KBaPO 4 : Mn 5+ possesses a highly symmetric crystal lattice and a higher doping limit, with a thermal quenching activation energy ( ΔE ) of 0.414 eV. This work not only provides three promising NIR-II phosphors for bioimaging and optical thermometry, but also offers new insights into the research of Mn 5+ -activated phosphate systems.

In response to the limitations of the traditional acid leaching process in terms of environmental impact and safety, this study developed a ternary mixed acid system (hydrochloric acid - oxalic acid - citric acid) without the use of hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid. The influence of three process parameters, namely, the concentration of the mixed acids, the liquid-solid ratio, the acid leaching temperature, and the acid leaching time, on the removal efficiency of impurities such as Fe, Mn, Al, K, and Na in quartz sand was systematically investigated. The experimental results revealed that the optimal acid leaching conditions were a hydrochloric acid concentration of 4.5 mol·L − 1 , an oxalic acid concentration of 0.03 mol·L − 1 , a citric acid concentration of 0.04 mol·L − 1 , a liquid-solid ratio (mass ratio) of 5:1, a constant temperature of 60 ℃, and a holding time of 3 h. Under these conditions, the removal rates of Fe, Mn, and Al reached 89.2%, 71.0%, and 60.1%, respectively. Moreover, K and Na were also removed to a certain extent, with removal rates of 39.6% and 25.5%, respectively. Mechanistic analysis revealed that in the ternary mixed acid system, hydrochloric acid provides an acidic environment, and the combination of oxalic acid and citric acid synergistically promotes the dissolution of impurities through complexation, reducing impurities on the surface of quartz sand, improving the cleanliness, and forming micro-porous structures. Compared with the traditional hydrogen fluoride-nitric acid leaching process, the fluorine-free ternary mixed acid system proposed in this study has a similar or even better removal efficiency for impurities such as Fe and avoids the environmental and safety risks associated with hydrogen fluoride. This system can achieve the simultaneous removal of various impurities in quartz sand under normal pressure and medium-low-temperature conditions, providing a new technical path for the development of quartz sand purification technology for safety and environmental protection.

Sucrose-derived carbon spheres are promising host materials for cathode sulfur species in Room-Temperature (RT) Na-S batteries. Therefore, the morphology, micro-mesoporous structure, and oxygen-containing functional groups of sucrose-derived nanocarbon spheres were regulated to effectively accommodate sulfur species. This structural design facilitates sulfur confinement, improves charge/ion transport, and enhances the cycling stability of AC@S composites. With increasing activation temperature, the developed porous structure provides more storage sites for active sulfur species; however, excessive activation can reduce the content of oxygen- containing functional groups and weaken the chemical anchoring capability of the carbon framework. Among the prepared samples, AC@S-900 delivered the highest initial capacity of 1323.35 mAh g -1 at 1.0 C, whereas AC@S-750 exhibited superior cycling durability, delivering an initial specific capacity of 941.48 mAh g -1 and maintaining 566.04 mAh g -1 after 1500 cycles, corresponding to an ultralow capacity decay rate of 0.027% per cycle. DFT calculations further suggested that oxygen-containing functional groups can provide polar adsorption/catalytic sites, reduce the conversion energy barriers of Na 2 S x species. Specifically, the carbon framework's carbonyl (C=O) and epoxy (C-O-C) groups can enhance the sulfur redox kinetics. Download: Download high-res image (308KB) Download: Download full-size image

Growing tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) on self-supporting carbon fiber cloth is an effective means to enhance the sodium storage. However, it is difficult for WS 2 to exhibit high stability and fast reaction kinetics on the surface of carbon fiber cloth. Herein, we construct a composite structure that WS 2 nanosheets are grown on the surface of carbon fiber cloth with many gaps. These gaps are poured by pyrolytic carbon structure. The composite structures expose lateral (0 0 2) crystal plane of WS 2 nanosheets (WS 2 /CFC@C-P). When WS 2 /CFC@C-P is evaluated as an anode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), the exposed (0 0 2) lateral edge realizes the rapid migration of Na + with fast reaction kinetics. Moreover, the poured carbon stabilizes expanded WS 2 nanosheets to maintain original structure. Under the above merits, WS 2 /CFC@C-P could provide high reversible capacity (672 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles at 100 mA g −1 ) and rate capacity (657 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and 230 mAh g −1 at 2 A g −1 ). Furthermore, they deliver 297 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 2 A g −1 with a low capacity fading of 0.96% per cycle. This work provides a new insight to develop high performance SIBs by introducing the fine regulation of carbon layer.

Antimony trisulfide (Sb2S3) is a highly promising anode material for alkali-metal batteries due to its high theoretical capacity and abundant resources. However, severe volume expansion during charge-discharge and low electrical conductivity restrict its electrochemical performance. In this study, Sb2S3@NC core-shell nanorod with hollow feature (H-Sb2S3@NC) was successfully prepared via high-temperature carbonization and secondary sulfidation of the inorganic-organic Sb2S3@PDA composite precursor. It would induce the volatilization of partial Sb2S3 by controlling temperature during carbonization, concurrently forming the inorganic core-shell nanorod structure and its hollow feature. Compared to Sb2S3@NC without hollow feature, H-Sb2S3@NC exhibits superior cycling and rate performance when as anode for sodium-ion (SIBs) and potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). Specifically, as anode for SIBs, H-Sb2S3@NC retains 517.0 mAh g⁻¹ after 100 cycles at 100 mA g⁻¹ and even delivers 535.5 mAh g⁻¹ at 1000 mA g⁻¹ (Sb2S3@NC: 60.6 mAh g⁻¹ after 100 cycles at 100 mA g⁻¹, 39.7 mAh g⁻¹ at 1000 mA g⁻¹). For PIBs, H-Sb2S3@NC provides 431.1 mAh g⁻¹ after 50 cycles at 100 mA g⁻¹ (Sb2S3@NC: 208.3 mAh g⁻¹ under the same conditions). Ex situ characterizations confirm Sb2S3 undergoes a reversible conversion-alloying reaction during Na⁺/K⁺ storage. The internal voids of H-Sb2S3@NC could effectively buffer volume expansion stress, while N-doping in the NC (nitrogen-doped carbon) layer enhances ion/electron transport. These two factors synergistically ensure electrode structural stability and excellent kinetics. The temperature-controlled microstructure regulation strategy proposed in this study provides an effective approach to addressing the volume expansion problem of Sb2S3-based anodes and optimizing the electrode performance of alkali-metal ion batteries.

Na 0.67 Ni 0.33 Mn 0.67 O 2 (NNM) is regarded as a promising cathode material for Na-ion batteries (NIBs), but suffers from irreversible phase transformations characterized by multiple voltage plateaus, resulting in poor cycle stability and inferior rate capability. To address these issues, the Na 0.67 Ni 0.18 Cu 0.10 Zn 0.05 Mn 0.67 O 2 (NNCZM) cathode material is synthesized by a cation chelation and reassembly process, which can promote a more uniform element distribution than that prepared by the solid-state method (S-NNCZM), resulting in better Na + diffusion kinetics and rate capability. Replacing Ni 2+ with a small amount of Zn 2+ prevents the P2-O2 phase transformation, while replacing Ni 2+ with an appropriate amount of electrochemically active Cu 2+ eliminates Na-vacancy ordering and additionally contributes to capacity. Thus, the dual substitution of Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ for Ni 2+ makes the NNCZM electrode synergistically achieve a complete solid solution reaction and better cycling stability. Accordingly, it exhibits a large discharge capacity (110.2 mA h g −1 at 10 mA g −1 ) with a high initial coulombic efficiency (97.3%), remarkable cycle stability with 84.1% capacity retention over 200 cycles at 200 mA g −1 , and excellent rate capability with a discharge capacity of 61.0 mA h g −1 at 2000 mA g −1 , significantly outperforming the NNM and S-NNCZM electrodes.
