Necklace-box structural FeS 2 /WS 2 carbon nano-composite fibers (NB FeS 2 /WS 2 -CNFs) are fabricated by electrospinning-sulfuration-hydrothermal process. NB FeS 2 /WS 2 -CNFs exhibit the spatial confined structure, which is able to restrain volume expansion effectively in the process of Na + intercalation/deintercalation and improve the cycling stability and rate performance. NB FeS 2 /WS 2 -CNFs exhibit remarkable initial coulombic efficiency (ICE = 87.0%) and stable long cycle (~422.6 mA h g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 after 500 cycles) for sodium storage capability. The heterojunction interface between FeS 2 and WS 2 can alleviate the damage of the micro-crystal plane and enhance electrochemical kinetic process. The structure evolution and mechanism of sodium storage are explored by ex-situ methods, which further confirm the spatial and interface confinement effect distinctly. In addition, the electrochemical kinetic properties of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) are compared, thereby revealing the energy storage mechanism and different ion migration modes of the three batteries. This work provides a guide for the synthesis of bimetallic compounds based on the spatial confinement and heterojunction interface confined strategy that efficiently improves energy storage performance of electrode material.

Sponge-like three-dimensional porous carbon-encapsulated Na3.32Fe2.34(P2O7)2 nanoparticles (labeled to NFPO@SC) were manufactured by a sol–gel method followed by multistage calcinations and utilized as the cathode material for sodium-ion batteries. The excellent electrochemical performance of the NFPO@SC cathode can be attributed to its unique porous structure, which facilitates electrolyte penetration, reduces the diffusion path of sodium ions, and increases electronic conductivity. In addition, the full battery is assembled by NFPO@SC and hard carbon, which are employed as cathode and anode electrodes, respectively. The full battery delivers a high discharge capacity (112.2 mA h g–1 at 0.5 C) and maintains 93.9% stable capacity over 1000 cycles at 5 C.

Overlithiated oxide cathode materials show high capacity but poor cycle stability and voltage attenuation. In this work, a concentration difference driven molten salt ion exchange strategy is used to replace a small quantity of lithium ions by sodium ions. With the entry of sodium ions, the interplanar spacing is increased and the structure is stabilized. The electrochemical properties of materials have been improved obviously. The powder X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy are used to detect the entry of sodium ions and structural changes. The modified materials display high discharge specific capacity, excellent cycling performance, and reduced voltage attenuation.

An adduct of myrcene and maleic anhydride (AMMA) was synthesized using a Diels-Alder reaction. The adduct was transformed into the corresponding sodium , calcium salt and zinc salts (Na-AMMA, Ca-AMMA, and Zn-AMMA) using a metathesis reaction . The chemical structures of AMMA, Na-AMMA, Ca-AMMA, and Zn-AMMA were confirmed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), 1 H and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR), and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Mixed Ca/Na/Zn salts from AMMA provided thermal stabilization for poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC). The thermal and mechanical properties of the PVC samples were investigated using discoloration and Congo red tests, scanning electron microscopy analysis (SEM), thermal gravity analysis (TGA), TGA–FTIR analysis, thermal gravity-mass spectrometer analysis (TGA-MS), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Optimal design of the Ca/Na/Zn-AMMA formulation was studied. The application of Ca/Na/Zn-AMMA in an optimized formulation for a biobased, primary thermal stabilizer for PVC could significantly improve PVC thermal stability. The optimized Ca/Na/Zn-AMMA formulation had higher thermal stability, higher storage modulus , and lower glass transition temperatures than PVC blends without any thermal stabilizers and using commercial CaSt 2 /ZnSt 2 . The weights of the Ca/Na/Zn-AMMA samples were 33.3–75.0% that of CaSt 2 /ZnSt 2 , but provided higher thermal stability. Myrcene-derived Ca/Na/Zn-AMMA was shown to have strong potential as a primary PVC thermal stabilizer.

Yolk-shell-structured transition metal sulfides (TMSs)/carbon nanocomposites are highly desirable in advanced energy storage system, such as sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and supercapacitors (SCs). Nevertheless, practical applications are still prevented by the loose attachment of TMSs with carbon caused by conversion stress, the aggregation of TMSs nanoparticles and the sluggish ion transport caused by high crystallinity of carbon. Here, the disperse hollow Co 9 S 8 nanoparticles encapsulated into N,S-codoped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with poor crystallinity through Co N C bond was synthesized (CS-NSCNT) to overcome the above obstacles. The designed CS-NSCNT can provide the short diffusion path and prevent the huge volume expansion of conversion reaction. Moreover, the established Co N C bond endows the strong interaction and regulates the electronic structure thus promote the stability and rate performance effectively. The CS-NSCNT SCs’s electrode delivers a high specific capacitance of 1150 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , with a high cycling life stability and rate performance. For SIBs, the CS-NSCNT cathode demonstrates an initial reversible capacity of 475 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and an excellent rate performance with a capacity retention of 53 % at 10 A g −1 . This work may satisfy the long-stability, high-capacitance/capacity, high-power/energy density application requirements of future applications.

Two-dimensional (2D) graphitic-C3N4 (g-C3N4) was successfully hybridized with one-dimensional (1D) flux-grown Na-modified K2Ti6O13 nanobelts (Na-K2Ti6O13 NBs) for the first time to construct novel 1D/2D Na-K2Ti6O13/g-C3N4 heterostructured photocatalysts using a facile mixing–calcination method. The heterostructured Na-K2Ti6O13/g-C3N4 composites with three-dimensional (3D) hybrid architectures exhibited a remarkably enhanced photocatalytic efficiency for organic pollutant degradation in comparison with pure Na-K2Ti6O13 and g-C3N4 under both simulated sunlight and visible-light irradiation (λ > 420 nm), which could be mainly attributed to the synergistic effects between Na-K2Ti6O13 and g-C3N4 including more efficient interfacial charge transfer, longer lifetimes and the stronger oxidation and reduction ability of photogenerated charge carriers, fundamentally originating from the formation of Na-K2Ti6O13/g-C3N4 heterojunctions based on the well-matched energy-band structures. Moreover, the Na-K2Ti6O13/g-C3N4 hybrids showed good stability and reusability for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. Finally, the possible mechanisms responsible for the improved simulated sunlight and visible-light photocatalytic performance were also investigated, respectively, based on the results of PL spectra, time-resolved fluorescence decay spectra, radical species trapping experiments, ESR spectra and PL-TA measurements. Overall, this work will not only be beneficial for the design and development of more efficient visible-light-responsive g-C3N4-based composites for solar energy conversion and environmental remediation but will also be influential in optimizing the visible-light photocatalytic activity of wide-band-gap 1D titanate nanomaterials to meet the requirements of practical applications.

Lithium silicate (Li 4 SiO 4 ) sorbent has garnered attention in CO 2 capture due to its high theoretical adsorption capacity and fast kinetics. However, its adsorption capacity and kinetics were hindered by low CO 2 concentration. Improving adsorption performance of Li 4 SiO 4 at low CO 2 concentration has become the key to industrial application. In this work, high-activity Na-doped Li 4 SiO 4 with controllable active substance Li 3 NaSiO 4 was achieved. The influences of raw materials ratios on the CO 2 adsorption performance were systematically investigated. When R Li/Si =4.05:1 and R Na/Si =0.15:1, the sample exhibited the highest adsorption capacity of 32.28 wt% with an equilibrium time of 29 min, and a superior stable capacity of 31.09 wt% in 15 cycles. Importantly, the double exponential fitting revealed that LiNaCO 3 accelerated the ion diffusion rate and real-time adsorption processes showed Li 3 NaSiO 4 expedited surface chemical reaction rate. Based on these, a novel Na 2 CO 3 eutectic doping mechanism was proposed. The active substance Li 3 NaSiO 4 , generated through Na doping, along with its product formed from the reaction with CO 2 , molten LiNaCO 3 , acted synergistically to improve adsorption performance by accelerating surface chemical reaction rate and ion diffusion rate. Compared with other doped Li 4 SiO 4 , the sorbent prepared in this work demonstrated competitive adsorption performance, providing theoretical and technical support for the large-scale production of high-activity Li 4 SiO 4 .

O3-type layered oxide cathodes (NaxTMO2) for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted significant attention as one of the most promising potential candidates for practical energy storage applications. The poor Na+ diffusion kinetics is, however, one of the major obstacles to advancing large-scale practical application. Herein, we report bismuth-doped O3-NaNi0.5Mn0.5O2 (NMB) microspheres consisting of unique primary nanoplatelets with the radially oriented {010} active lattice facets. The NMB combines the advantages of the oriented and exposed electrochemical active planes for direct paths of Na+ diffusion, and the thick primary nanoplatelets for less surface parasitic reactions with the electrolyte. Consequently, the NMB cathode exhibits a long-term stability with an excellent capacity retention of 72.5% at 1C after 300 cycles and an enhanced rate capability at a 0.1C to 10C rate (1C = 240 mA g–1). Furthermore, the enhancement is elucidated by the small volume change, thin cathode-electrolyte-interphase (CEI) layer, and rapid Na+ diffusion kinetics. In particular, the radial orientation-based Bi-doping strategy is demonstrated to be effective at boosting electrochemical performance in other layered oxides (such as Bi-doped NaNi0.45Mn0.45Ti0.1O2 and NaNi1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3O2). The results provide a promising strategy of utilizing the advantages of the oriented active facets of primary platelets and secondary particles to develop high-rate layered oxide cathodes for SIBs.

Nanofiltration (NF) membranes with efficient selectivity are critical for addressing water source pollution from toxic heavy metals and emerging micropollutants. Herein, we engineered a polyamide (PA) NF membrane with ambidextrous selectivity by leveraging the concentration-driven effect of piperazine (PIP) during interfacial polymerization (IP). This PIP concentration-driven effect was verified by modulating the PIP concentration gradient from low to high, which enhanced IP efficiency via both an intensified alkaline reaction environment and concentration-driven diffusion. The optimized NF membrane features an ultrafine pore size distribution and reduced electronegativity, exhibiting a remarkable shift from sole SO 4 2− /Cl − selectivity to impressive ambidextrous selectivity, encompassing both SO 4 2− /Cl − (α ≈ 48, 98.3 % for Na 2 SO 4 ) and Mg 2+ /Na + (α ≈ 37, 98.2 % for MgCl 2 ). Moreover, it membrane also achieved exceptional removal efficiencies of 94.8–98.9 % for heavy metals and 77.6–99.3 % for antibiotics, while maintaining a water permeability of 19.3 L/m 2 h bar and mitigating the perm-selectivity trade-off. When purifying surface water containing heavy metals and antibiotics, the optimized NF membrane exhibited superior multi-pollutant removal and improved water production quality compared to the NF270 and NF90 membranes, and especially with its water permeance increased by ~27 % to 179 %. Our work uncovers a fundamental correlation between the PIP concentration, IP reaction, PA nanostructures and NF performance, providing valuable insights into customizing high-performance NF membranes to address complex water pollution challenges.

This study introduces a novel electrochemical aptasensor designed for the sensitive detection of lactate in athlete sweat. The sensor is based on a PEI-rGO-modified SPCE coupled with AuPt NPs, and utilizes Na+-assisted DNAzyme for signal amplification. The PEI-rGO modification enhances the aptasensor's conductivity, while the AuPt NPs efficiently load MB and LDNA, generating stable electrochemical signals. Furthermore, the Na+-dependent DNAzyme leverages the Na+ naturally present in sweat to activate the cleavage process, amplifying the detection signal. The sensor exhibits a strong linear relationship between current response and lactate concentration in the range of 5 × 10−3 to 10 mM, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.974 μM. It demonstrates excellent specificity, stability, and repeatability. The optimized aptasensor offers significant potential for real-time, non-invasive lactate monitoring, particularly in athletic performance and health assessment. This work provides a promising approach for the development of reliable, portable biosensors for tracking lactate metabolism, with implications for sports science and health management.

Conversion-type selenium cathodes are considered a highly promising alternative to sulfur cathodes due to their high conductivity and similar theoretical capacity. However, stress-diffusion and shuttle effects during the conversion process remain significant challenges that urgently need to be addressed. Herein, a composite matrix of MoSe 2 anchored on the surface of N -doped hollow mesoporous carbon nanospheres (NHMCNS) was designed as a Se host to construct Se/C cathodes (Se/MoSe 2 @NHMCNS). Anchored MoSe 2 successfully mitigated selenium loss by enhancing the chemisorption of polyselenides within the matrix. Meanwhile, polyselenides adsorbed on the Se/C cathode surface exhibit lower diffusion barriers and more negative Gibbs free energy during the conversion from chain polyselenides to Na 2 Se. MoSe 2 accelerated the catalytic conversion of polyselenides to the final discharge products from both kinetic and thermodynamic perspectives. The huge stress induced by structural transformation during the conversion process is mitigated by MoSe 2 synergistic carbon walls, which effectively maintain the structural stability of the cathode. Based on this three-in-one strategy, the sodium-selenium battery assembled with Se/MoSe 2 @NHMCNS exhibits stable cycling performance (400.6 mAh g −1 at 2C after 500 cycles), and the pouch battery also demonstrates good practical performance.

Metal nanoparticles encapsulated in zeolite have been recently developed as a special type of catalyst that shows significant advantages in activity, shape-selectivity, and stability over conventional supported catalysts. The selectivity modulation of encapsulated nanoparticle catalysis by the zeolite microenvironment is theoretically possible but not addressed yet. Here, we report the in situ encapsulation of sub-nanometric palladium species within MFI-type zeolites, which exhibit high activity and good stability in the hydroconversion of furfural as a model reaction of biomass upgrading. Remarkably, different products, e.g., furan, furfural alcohol, and 1,5-pentanediol, from furfural hydroconversion can be obtained when silicalite-1, Na-ZSM-5, and H-ZSM-5 are employed as hosts of palladium nanoparticles, respectively. Density functional theory calculations and spectroscopy investigations reveal that both the adsorption of furfural and the activation of hydrogen are significantly affected by the zeolite microenvironment, leading to different reaction pathways. Our work presents an elegant example of catalytic selectivity modulation of encapsulated metal nanoparticles by tuning the zeolite microenvironment.
