Endowing piezoelectric and anti-fouling properties by directly poling β-phase PVDF membranes with green diluents

Zhang Jianwen,Cao Peng,Cui Zhaoliang,Wang Qian,Fan Fan,Qiu Minghui,Wang Xiaozu,Wang Zhaohui,Wang Yong

Membrane fouling can be efficiently mitigated by the vibration of the piezoelectric membrane stimulated by AC signals, but it is still a challenge to fabricate piezoelectric membranes with great efficiency, low energy-consumption, and no harm to the environment during its preparation. The present work provides a new approach to poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes with piezoelectric properties by directly poling β-phase PVDF membranes using green diluents, which revealed better piezoelectric properties than poling α-phase PVDF membranes. Basically, absolute β-phase crystals of PVDF membranes were induced over thermally induced phase separation with the addition of Acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC)/ionic liquid ([BMIM]PF 6 ), which are regarded as green and environment-friendly diluents. To endow the piezoelectric property to the β-phase PVDF membrane, a poling process was necessarily conducted. The effect of the poling process on the membrane structure, morphologies, properties, and performances was investigated. Meanwhile, a vibration test for both of the poled and unpoled membranes was performed in an excitation of the alternating signal. The results demonstrated that the poling process positively endowed the piezoelectric property to the PVDF membranes. The membrane structure, morphologies, and performances of the membranes were also changed to some extent by the poling process. Additionally, filtrations of the poled membrane both with and without electrical signals were carried out to test their antifouling performance on the CaCO 3 suspension system and BSA solution, respectively. It was observed that the stable flux of the membranes notably improved when subjected to an electrical AC signal. Thus, it depicted that the piezoelectric PVDF membrane directly poled from the β-phase possesses a promising antifouling performance due to its high piezoelectric vibration.

A Hydrophobic, Self-Powered, Electromagnetic Shielding PVDF-Based Wearable Device for Human Body Monitoring and Protection

Min Sang,Sheng Wang,Shuai Liu,Mei Liu,Linfeng Bai,Wanquan Jiang,Shouhu Xuan,Xinglong Gong

With the rapid development of the electronics, information technology, and wearable devices, problems of the power crisis and electromagnetic radiation pollution have emerged. A piezoelectric wearable textile combined with electromagnetic shielding performance has become a favorable solution. Herein, a multifunctional PVDF-based wearable sensor with both electromagnetic shielding function and human body monitoring performance is proposed by incorporating silver nanowires (Ag NWs) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) hybrid-networks into PVDF-casted commercial nonwoven fabrics (NWF). The coordination of Ag NWs and MWCNTs networks ensures the ideal electrical conductivity and mechanical strength. The maximum shielding value of the developed sensor reaches up to 34 dB when the area densities of the Ag NWs and MWCNT are kept at 1.9 and 2.0 mg/cm2, respectively. Additionally, the hydrophobicity of the as-proposed sensor (water contact angle of ∼110.0°) ensures the self-cleaning function and makes it resistive against water and dirt. Moreover, the sensor possesses a force-sensing property by generating different piezoelectric voltages (0, 0.4, 1.0, and 1.5 V) when stimulated by various forces (0, 20, 44, and 60 N). Not only can it respond to different external stress in a timely manner (response sensitivity of ∼0.024 V/N, response time of ∼35 ms), but it can also monitor different body movements, such as joint bending, running, and jumping. This work opens up a new prospect of monitoring the human body as well as protecting human health from electromagnetic radiation surroundings.

2D Ti3C2Tx MXene/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanocomposites for attenuation of electromagnetic radiation with excellent heat dissipation

Krishnamoorthy Rajavel,Suibin Luo,Yanjun Wan,Xuecheng Yu,Yougen Hu,Pengli Zhu,Rong Sun,Chingping Wong

The present study deals with novel, and cost-effective preparation of 2D MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) filled polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer nanocomposite for the attenuation of electromagnetic interference (EMI). The obtained nanocomposite showed remarkable shielding effectiveness ( SE ) of 48.47 ± 3.5 dB for 22.55 vol% filler contents at a thickness of 2 mm. Formation of conducting network along with the assembly of micro capacitor network preserved for its high EMI shielding performance. The absorption dominated EMI shielding mechanism explained by the strong resonance, and interfacial polarization favors the loss of incident EM energy confirmed from dielectric measurements. Besides, the enhanced thermal conductivity of MXene-PVDF nanocomposites about 0.767 ± 0.034 Wm −1 K −1 at 22.55 vol% filler content depicts that a large amount of incident EM wave attenuated majorly by dielectric components which would be dissipated as heat quickly. The fabricated MXene-PVDF nanocomposites could be a potential candidate for EMI shielding materials and promising multifaceted electronic utilization.

Fluoro-polymer-coated carbon nanotubes for improved interfacial interactions and dielectric properties in MWCNTs/PVDF composites

Song Shixin,Xia Shan,Wei Yingcong,Lv Xue,Sun Shulin,Li Quanming

In this paper, the fluoro-polymer-coated multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared by in situ atom transfer radical polymerization of 2-(perfluoroalkyl) ethyl methacrylate (FEMA) on the surface of MWCNTs. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that the fluoro-polymer on MWCNTs surface improved the dispersion and compatibility of MWCNTs in the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix. The PFEMA@MWCNTs/PVDF composites exhibited improved thermal stability and reduced crystallinity due to enhanced interface strength between MWCNTs and PVDF. Furthermore, nearly 100% polar phase PVDF formed after introducing high PFEMA@MWCNTs content into PVDF matrix. It was also found that PFEMA@MWCNTs-filled PVDF composites present advantages in increasing dielectric constants and decreasing loss tangents due to the restriction of interface polarization and leakage current. Based on the percolation threshold and ac conductivities, the PFEMA@MWCNTs/PVDF composites exhibit good insulation properties and are promising for high-performance dielectric composite applications.

Rational Design of PDA/P-PVDF@PP Janus Membrane with Asymmetric Wettability for Switchable Emulsion Separation

Jingjun Peng,Bhaskar Jyoti Deka,Shaodi Wu,Zhongyuan Luo,Jehad A. Kharraz,Wei Jia

Water pollution caused by oil spills or sewage discharges has become a serious ecological environmental issue. Despite the membrane separation technique having a promising application in wastewater purification, the membrane fabrication method and separation robustness have remained unsatisfactory until now. Herein, we developed a novel strategy, spacer-assisted sequential phase conversion, to create a patterned polyvinylidene fluoride@polypropylene (P-PVDF@PP) substrate membrane with a multiscale roughened surface. Based on that surface structure, the underwater oil resistance behavior of the P-PVDF@PP membrane was improved. Moreover, owing to the abundant active sites on the P-PVDF@PP surface, the polydopamine/P-PVDF@PP (PDA/P-PVDF@PP) Janus membrane could be readily fabricated via wet chemical modification, which exhibited excellent switchable oil–water separation performance. Regarding surfactant-stabilized oil-water emulsion, the as-prepared PDA/P-PVDF@PP Janus membrane also had robust separation efficiency (as high as 99% in the n-hexane/water, chloroform/water, and toluene/water emulsion separation cases) and desirable reusability. Finally, the underlying mechanism of emulsion separation in the PDA/P-PVDF@PP Janus membrane was specified. The as-designed PDA/P-PVDF@PP Janus membrane with high-efficiency oil–water separation shows potential application in oily wastewater treatment, and the developed fabrication method has implications for the fabrication of advanced separation membranes. Keywords:emulsion separation;Janus membrane;patterned interface;switchable wettability

Uniform ZIF-67@17-FAS/PVDF superhydrophobic nanofibrous membrane via co-solvent strategy for membrane distillation

Zhifan Guo,Chen Wang,Hongwei Liu,Yujia Tong,Kaili Zhao,Xiaohui Ju,Weixing Li

Co-solvent method to precisely reduce the polarity for preparing uniform ZIF-67 nanoparticles. • 17-FAS promotes interfacial compatibility between ZIF-67 and PVDF and increases wetting resistance. • High water flux of 24.7 kg·m −2 ·h −1 with only 3.01% decline rate after 72 h DCMD. Membrane distillation (MD) offers distinct advantages for wastewater treatment, including low operational demands and near-perfect solute rejection. However, its long-term application is severely hindered by issues such as material detachment, membrane deformation, and wetting. Here, a co-solvent-assisted synthesis strategy with n-heptane and methanol was proposed to prepare uniform ZIF-67 nanoparticles. By optimizing the fiber diameter, robust integration of ZIF-67 with the PVDF matrix is achieved. Furthermore, the incorporation of 1 H,1 H,2 H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (17-FAS) significantly improves interfacial adhesion between ZIF-67 and PVDF, effectively preventing particle detachment and reinforcing wetting resistance during prolonged operation. The successful incorporation of ZIF-67 and 17-FAS was confirmed by FTIR and XPS analyses, and SEM and AFM observations revealed the micro-rough morphology of membrane surface. The enhanced mechanical properties and thermal stability of the composite membranes were verified by tensile testing and TGA. The developed ZIF-67@17-FAS/PVDF membrane exhibits a high water contact angle of 156.6° and the permeate flux of 24.7 kg·m −2 ·h −1 with 3.01% decline rate for 3.5 wt% NaCl solution within 72 h of direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD). Remarkably, under a high-salinity condition of 10 wt%, the flux decline rate is only 7.01%, demonstrating outstanding long-term stability. This work provides a promising strategy to overcome the key limitations of MD membranes through synergistic size control, structural optimization, and interfacial engineering. The enhanced self-cleaning property of clothing fabrics through surface-fluorinated undamaged PGMA/PVDF co-modification

Hong Ye,Yu Kanping

Cotton-based clothing fabrics are welcome because they are warm, close-fitting, hygroscopic and breathable. However, surface hydrophilic hydroxyls will make them easy to stick to stains. High-cost preparing of inorganic nanoparticles can favor a building of hydrophobic coatings for them. To cheaply attain surface self-cleaning attributes of cotton-based fabrics, here, all-organic surface coatings were established utilizing surface-fluorinated uninjured polyglycidyl methacrylate (PGMA)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) co-modifying. High PVDF dosage incurred a large water contact angle (WCA) of treated fabric, and high hydrophilic attribute of pristine fabric was altered into high hydrophobic one. Antifouling attribute was acquired on the surfaces of treated fabrics, and effective ultraviolet (UV) and wearing resistances of the optimal coating/fabric composite with feeding 10 wt% of PVDF were fulfilled. The optimal fabric surface demonstrates a superhydrophobic attribute (WCA at 153.5 ± 1.5°). After UV irradiating for 24 h or surface abrasion for 100 cycles, this surface demonstrates a WCA surpassing 140° with a water sliding angle below 16°. The fiber weaving constitution and surface F assembling are critical for performance optimizing. The current research may give an effective route for large-area producing of self-cleaning cotton-based fabrics.

Recyclable and selective PVDF-based molecularly imprinted membrane combining mussel-inspired biomimetic strategy for dimethomorph elimination

Yunyun Wang,Haonan Ruan,Jing Zhang,Ying Huang,Mengyue Guo,Dandan Kong,Jiaoyang Luo,Meihua Yang

The indiscriminate application and abuse of the broad-spectrum fungicide dimethomorph (DMM) not only causes serious residues on agricultural products, which indirectly endangers human health, but also directly harms aquatic organisms through the persistence of water pollution. In the present study, the integration of eco-friendly membrane technology and highly selective molecular imprinting technology was facilitated through the introduction of polydopamine (PDA) biomimetic technology, which promoted the elimination of DMM and held great significance for food safety and environmental protection. Herein, the fabrication process involved the initial preparation of PDA modification on the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane surface, followed by the modification of molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) with DMM as a template molecule to obtain a specific adsorbed membrane material (PVDF@PDA@KH570@dualMIP membrane, dMIM) for DMM. The physical properties and chemical feature of the developed dMIM were investigated using various characterization techniques, and the preparation parameters were optimized. Ultimately, the superior adsorption capacity (maximum capacity, 314 μg/cm 2 ) and adsorption selectivity of dMIM has been successfully achieved, alongside excellent reusability (number of cycles, 5 times). Moreover, in terms of practical application, the prepared dMIM demonstrated remarkable efficacy in eliminating DMM, with removal efficiencies in tap water ranging from 74.43 % to 86.12 % for three residual concentrations, and 90.71 %–95.67 % in Panax notoginseng aqueous extracts at three material-to-liquid ratios, while had little impact on the quality of the extracts. We believe that this strategy provides a new insight into the design of novel adsorption materials for the selective elimination of DMM in environmental water and complex food matrix.

Synergy of PVDF-HFP and ZIF-8 promotes PEO electrolyte towards all-solid-state lithium battery

Erwei Tan,Wenjie Peng,Qihou Li,Ding Wang,Xinhai Li,Jianguo Duan,Huajun Guo,Guochun Yan,Jiexi Wang,Zhixing Wang

Polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based electrolytes are considered to be promising for all-solid-state battery, benefiting from the superior flexibility, excellent processability and well compatibility. However, the low ionic conductivity at room temperature and poor stability under high voltage limit their further application. Herein, ZIF-8@PVDF-HFP/PEO (PPZ) solid electrolyte was successfully prepared by facial electrospinning process. On one side, the cooperation of PVDF-HFP and ZIF-8 was benefit to decrease the crystallization degree of PEO and thus promoted the Li + transfer. Moreover, the in-situ formed LiF layer derived from the decomposition of PVDF-HFP protected the electrolyte from contacting directly with the electrode, contributing to a stable electrode/electrolyte interface. The results demonstrated that the electrochemical stability and mechanical property of PPZ electrolyte were significantly improved when compared to the bare PEO electrolyte. The tensile strength increased from 0.5 to 6.7 MPa and the Li + transference number enlarged from 0.17 to 0.48. More importantly, the assembled LCO(LiCoO 2 )||PPZ||Li all-solid-state battery delivered a discharge specific capacity of 144.7 mAh g -1 at 0.2 C, nearly 1.6 times than that of the LCO||PEO||Li (90.7 mAh g -1 ). Besides that, the retention maintained at 86.3 % even after 200 cycles, manifesting a long-term cycling stability. This work provides a new idea for the practical application of PEO under high voltage.

Hierarchical metal-organic framework-functionalized PVDF tree-like nanofiber membrane for high-efficient photothermal membrane distillation

Zongjie Li,Shuye Wang,Xinhui Wang,Xiaobin Sun,Weimin Kang,Yong Liu

The development of membrane with strong sunlight absorption and high energy efficiency is the key to improve the water production efficiency in photothermal membrane distillation (PMD). In this paper, a hierarchical Cu-based metal–organic framework-functionalized polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) tree-like nanofiber membrane (Cu-CAT@TLNM-TLNMs) was developed for high-efficient PMD. The Cu-CAT@TLNM-TLNM was prepared by in-situ growth of Cu-CAT on the surface of PVDF tree-like nanofiber membrane (TLNM) as photothermal layer and PVDF TLNM as support layer, which exhibited excellent photothermal conversion performance, high energy utilization and high permeate flux. The PVDF TLNM with high specific surface area provided more active sites for the growth of Cu-CAT, thus forming a uniform Cu-CAT nanoarray. The spinous structure of the Cu-CAT photothermal layer can increase the length of the light-matter interaction and improve light absorption. In addition, the tree-like structure of the support layer with high porosity and small pore size can improve the permeate flux and long-term stability. Under the illumination of 1 kW·m −2 , the surface temperature of the Cu-CAT@TLNM-TLNMs reached about 80 °C within 50 s, with a permeate flux of 1.37 kg·m −2 ·h −1 , a salt rejection of >99.99 %, and a photothermal conversion efficiency of 76 %. More importantly, the permeate flux of the Cu-CAT@TLNM-TLNMs was still stable at 0.79 kg·m −2 ·h −1 with a salt rejection of >99.99 % after 84 h of continuous operation. This photothermal nanofiber composite membrane can be applied to solve the problem of freshwater shortage in areas where freshwater and fuel resources are scarce and solar energy is abundant.

Self-cleaning and photodegradle PVDF separation membranes modified with self-assembled TiO2-g-CS/CNTs particle

Hongxu Liu,Junhao Xie,Ziyi Hu,Jingxuan Zhao,Ruijia Wang,Yuchao Qi,Shulin Sun

This work obtained separation membranes with UV-cleaning performance by adding TiO 2 -g-CS/CNTs photocatalyst to the PVDF . The positively charged chitosan (CS) and negatively charged carboxylic carbon nanotube (CNTs-COOH) can be self-assembled into the bilayer structure on the surface of TiO 2 particles through electrostatic attraction. The presence of many hydrophilic groups in CS and CNTs-COOH significantly improves the hydrophilicity of TiO 2 -g-CS/CNTs-PVDF membrane, and helps TiO 2 to be uniformly dispersed on the upper surface. TiO 2 -g-CS/CNTs promote the change of pore structure and expand the flux of the modified membrane to 4.5 times that of pure PVDF . Zeta potential demonstrates that the TiO 2 -g-CS particles successfully attracted CNTs in the PVDF matrix, and the membrane surface was still positively charged. Thus, the combined effect of the positively charged TiO 2 -g-CS and the highly adsorbed CNTs enhanced the retention of the contaminants. More importantly, there is a charge transfer between the grafted CS and TiO 2 interface to obtain a broader light absorption band. The excitation carriers provided by CNTs significantly contribute to the photocatalytic performance after transfer between TiO 2 and CS; thus, TiO 2 -g-CS/CNTs-PVDF produces higher photocatalytic activity for dye molecules (degradation rate > 97 %).

Fabrication of PS/PVDF-HFP Multi-Level Structured Micro/Nano Fiber Membranes by One-Step Electrospinning

Yixia Zhao,Zehao Zhang,Yan Zhang,Yuting Huang,Yanfei Chen,Bofei Chen,Weimin Kang,Jingge Ju

Recently, the multi-level interwoven structured micro/nano fiber membranes with coarse and fine overlaps have attracted lots of attention due to their advantages of high surface roughness, high porosity, good mechanical strength, etc., but their simple and direct preparation methods still need to be developed. Herein, the multi-level structured micro/nano fiber membranes were prepared novelly and directly by a one-step electrospinning technique based on the principle of micro-phase separation caused by polymer incompatibility using polystyrene (PS) and polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene copolymer (PVDF-HFP) as raw materials. It was found that different spinning fluid parameters and various spinning process parameters will have a significant impact on its morphology and structures. Under certain conditions (the concentration of spinning solution is 18 wt%, the mass ratio of PS to PVDF-HFP is 1:7, the spinning voltage is 30 kV, and the spinning receiving distance is 18 cm), the PS/PVDF-HFP membrane with optimal multi-level structured micro/nano fiber membranes could be obtained, which present an average pore size of 4.38 ± 0.10 μm, a porosity of 78.9 ± 3.5%, and a water contact angle of 145.84 ± 1.70°. The formation mechanism of micro/nano fiber interwoven structures was proposed through conductivity and viscosity tests. In addition, it was initially used as a separation membrane material in membrane distillation, and its performance was preliminarily explored. This paper provides a theoretical and experimental basis for the research and development of an efficient and feasible method for the preparation of multi-level micro/nano fiber membranes.
