AimsMethicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an important zoonotic pathogen with multidrug-resistant phenotypes increasingly prevalent in both human and veterinary clinics. This study evaluated the potential of auranofin (AF) as an antibiotic adjuvant to enhance the anti-MRSA activity of florfenicol (FFC) and established a pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) model to compare the efficacy of FFC alone or in combination with AF against MRSA.Methods and resultsWe observed an increased susceptibility and significant synergistic effects of MRSA to FFC in the presence of AF. The combination treatment of FFC and AF significantly inhibited MRSA biofilm formation and decreased the metabolic activity of mature biofilms. Importantly, AF fully restored the efficacy of FFC in both Galleria mellonella larvae and murine models. PK/PD studies demonstrated that the AUC24h/MIC targets required to achieve the bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects were significantly lower with the combination therapy compared to florfenicol monotherapy.ConclusionsThese results reveal the potential of AF as a novel adjuvant to improve the efficacy of FFC in treating MRSA invasive infections and provide valuable PK/PD insights for designing effective combination therapies.

Photothermal immunotherapy, especially combined with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) targeting programmed cell death 1 (PD-1), marks a breakthrough in cancer treatment. However, therapy often triggers compensatory upregulation of other immune checkpoints. This study introduces an advanced strategy to enhance the efficacy of photothermal immunotherapy by utilizing a novel nanocarrier that targets both PD-1 and T-cell immunoreceptor with Ig and ITIM domains (TIGIT) immune checkpoints. The dual blockade could counteract the compensatory upregulation of immune checkpoints triggered by PD-1 targeted therapies alone. The nanocarrier of this work is composed of a ZrB 2 photothermal core and a mesoporous silica layer, and finally coated with biocompatible polydopamine. This design could effectively deliver both TIGIT and PD-1 inhibitors directly to tumor sites, minimizing systemic side effects such as cytokine release syndrome. We demonstrate that this approach not only enhances cytotoxic responses of T and NK cells, but also promotes macrophage polarization towards a tumor-suppressing M1 phenotype dendritic cell maturation and immunogenic cell death. Our findings provide a promising avenue for cancer immunotherapy.

In this work, N-doped reduced graphene oxides (NRGO) was synthesized via a facile urea-hydrothermal treatment of graphene oxide and used as support for ultrafine Pd nanoparticles (NPs). It was found that N in NRGO can improve the dispersion of Pd NPs. NRGO supported Pd catalyst (Pd/NRGO) is highly active and selective for the hydrogenation of C C bond in cinnamaldehyde and hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone under mild conditions. X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectra and transmission electron microscopy characterizations confirmed the interaction between NRGO and Pd enhanced with the amount of N atom in NRGO. Raman spectroscopy of adsorbed cinnamaldehyde on Pd/NRGO suggested that NRGO played a positive role in the selective activation of C C bond in cinnamaldehyde.

Nobel metal nanoparticles have attracted intense attentions in biological immunoassay due to the inhereted good catalytic activity. In this study, a new kind of nanocomposite of ternary Pt@Pd@Ru nanodendrite-decorated graphene oxide (GO–Pt@Pd@Ru) was prepared as a signal label for ultrasensitive detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). With a sandwich type immunoassay, the established electrochemical immunosensor showed highly sensitive detection performance towards CEA in a linear range (0.1 pg mL−1 to 9 ng mL−1) with an ultralow detection limit of 0.05 pg mL−1. The enhancing detection performance could be attributed to: ternary Pt@Pd@Ru nanodendrites have exhibited superior electrochemical reduction activity towards H2O2, then GO–Pt@Pd@Ru can combine all generated electrochemical reduction current towards H2O2 by the decorated Pt@Pd@Ru nanodendrites, which can significantly amplify the detection signal.

Photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 into high value-added CH 4 is a promising solution for energy and environmental crises. Integrating semiconductors with cocatalysts can improve the activities for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction; however, most metal cocatalysts mainly produce CO and H 2 . Herein, we report a cocatalyst hydridation approach for significantly enhancing the photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 into CH 4 . Hydriding Pd cocatalysts into PdH 0.43 played a dual role in performance enhancement. As revealed by our isotopic labeling experiments, the PdH 0.43 hydride cocatalysts reduced H 2 evolution, which suppressed the H 2 production and facilitated the conversion of the CO intermediate into the final product: CH 4 . Meanwhile, hydridation promoted the electron trapping on the cocatalysts, improving the charge separation. This approach increased the photocatalytic selectivity in CH 4 production from 3.2% to 63.6% on Pd{100} and from 15.6% to 73.4% on Pd{111}. The results provide insights into photocatalytic mechanism studies and introduce new opportunities for designing materials towards photocatalytic CO 2 conversion.

Efficient, cost-effective and stable catalysts for cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are highly desirable for both chemical and microbial fuel cells. Nano-materials with three-dimensional (3D) porous materials are gaining popularity recently, because of their large surface areas and numerous active sites. In this work, we prepare a unique self-supporting Pd–Cu bimetallic catalyst with 3D porous structure using a facile double-template fabrication process and evaluate its performance as an ORR catalyst. This catalyst is found to possess an electrochemically active surface area of 80.2 m 2 /g Pd , a peak current of 17.4 mA/cm 2 and an unusual limiting current density of 12 mA/cm 2 . Meanwhile, the fabricated bimetallic catalyst displays a better long-term stability than the state-of-the-art Pt/C catalyst. This work provides useful information on the facile preparation of cost-effective cathodic catalysts for chemical or microbial fuel cells in a controllable way.

Promotion of the catalytic efficiency and reduction of the usage amount of Pd are crucial to developing effective and low-cost catalysts for catalytic reduction of organic aromatic nitro pollutant compound at present. Herein, we report a hybrid material of ultrafine Pd nanocrystals (PdNCs) grown on an excellent support of SnO2-decorated graphene nanosheets (SnO2-GNS) for a highly efficient reduction of a representative aromatic nitro compound (4-nitrophenol). The supporting material of SnO2-GNS was prepared simply by one step of homogeneous reaction with a positively charged polymer as stabilizer and active site for absorption of the PdNCs precursor. Transmittance electronic images demonstrate that the PdNCs are densely and well covered on the SnO2-GNS with a uniform size of 3.4 nm. This nanohybrid exhibits the fastest reduction time (4 minutes) compared to other controlled materials. Moreover, it shows high kinetic responses with an apparent kinetic rate constant (kapp) of 2.03 × 10−2 s−1 and turnover frequency (TOF) of 1.70 s−1. The cycle performance (10 times) experiments demonstrate that this nanohybrid also displays a good anti-poisoning capability. Thanks to the ultrafine PdNCs, this as-prepared PdNCs/SnO2-GNS nanohybrid may have broad potential in other catalytic fields, for example, organic synthesis, fuel cells and electrochemical biosensors.

Graphical Not just another brick in the wall: Brick-like Au@Pd core–shell nanobricks (CNBs) with a concave surface were synthesized through a one-pot procedure, and show an enhanced performance towards ethanol electrooxidation. The improved performance of the CNBs is a result of the exposed stepped surfaces, high-index facets, and the synergistic effects of the core and shell metals. Au@Pd core–shell nanobricks (CNBs) with concave surfaces and Pd shells with a thickness of approximately 5 nm were synthesized by co-reduction of HAuCl 4 and H 2 PdCl 4 in the presence of Au seeds and Ag ions. These as-synthesized concave CNBs exhibit significantly enhanced catalytic activity for the electrooxidation of ethanol in alkaline media compared to the commercially-used Pd black. The improved performance of the Au@Pd CNBs can be attributed to the exposed stepped surfaces, high-index facets, and the synergistic effects of the core and shell metals.

Abstract
In this paper, the palladium nanoparticles were successfully encapsulated in metal–organic framework material, UiO-66, by a facile approach. Based on the microwave-assisted method, the pores of UiO-66 were activated and the metal precursors were reduced at the same time in the presence of reducing agent. The obtained Pd@UiO-66 was characterized via transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, N 2 adsorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Pd@UiO-66 exhibited efficient catalytic activity for the Suzuki–Miyaura coupling reactions at mild condition. A great deal of research has been carried out on the design of Pd-based catalysts in the direct synthesis of H2O2, mainly for the purpose of improving the H2O2 selectivity by weakening the activation energy on the Pd active site and thus inhibiting the dissociation of the O–O bonds in O2*, OOH*, and HOOH*. However, this often results in insufficient activation energy for the reaction between H2 and O2 on Pd, leading to difficulties in improving both the selectivity and productivity of H2O2 simultaneously. Based on this, this study reports an efficient catalyst composed of amine-functionalized SBA-15-supported Pd. The strong metal–support interaction not only makes the PdNPs highly dispersed with more Pd active sites but also improves the stability of the catalyst. The amine group modification increases the proportion of Pd0, further enhancing Pd activity and promoting the adsorption and conversion of H2 and O2 on Pd, thereby significantly increasing H2O2 productivity. Additionally, the density-functional theory simulation results showed that due to the hydrogen-bonding force between the amine group and H2O2, this particular anchoring effect would make the hydrogenation and decomposition of H2O2 effectively suppressed. Ultimately, both the selectivity and productivity of H2O2 are improved simultaneously.

It is a challenge to improve the long-term durability of Pd-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells. Herein, Pd/CeO2-C-T (T=800, 900 and 1000℃) hybrid catalysts with metal-support interaction are prepared from Ce-based metal organic framework (Ce-MOF) precursor. Abundant tiny CeO2 nanoclusters are produced to form nanorod structures with uniformly distributed carbon through a calcination process. Meanwhile, both carbon and CeO2 nanoclusters have good contact with the following deposited surfactant-free Pd nanoclusters. Benefited from the large specific surface area, good conductivity and structure integrity, Pd/CeO2-C-900 exhibits the best electrocatalytic ORR performance: onset potential of 0.968 V and half-wave potential of 0.857 V, outperforming those obtained on Pd/C counterpart. In addition, the half-wave potential only shifts 7 mV after 6000 cycles of accelerated durability testing, demonstrating robust durability.

Cerium dioxide (CeO 2 ) supported palladium (Pd) catalysts have found widespread application in CO oxidation reaction owing to their exceptional catalytic performance. The morphology of the CeO 2 support dictates the exposed crystal plane, exerting a profound influence on surface structure and redox properties. This is crucial as the atomic arrangement at the surface directly impacts catalytic activity. In this study, a range of CeO 2 supports with diverse morphologies ( e.g. nano-octahedra, nano-cubes, nano-particles, nano-spheres, and nano-rods) were successfully synthesized through hydrothermal methods and subsequently supported with Pd for CO oxidation. The spherical 1Pd/CeO 2 –S catalyst, revealing exposed (111) + (100) crystal planes, exhibited significantly higher CO catalytic oxidation activity compared to the catalysts with other morphological CeO 2 supports. The results indicated a positive correlation between the content of Pd x Ce 1-x O 2-y species and catalytic activity. Notably, this species was most abundantly formed in the spherical 1Pd/CeO 2 –S catalyst with exposed (111) + (100) crystal planes. The presence of this active species facilitated the formation of surface defects , increased oxygen vacancy concentration, and enhanced metal-support interaction, consequently greatly improving the CO low-temperature catalytic oxidation activity. Consequently, the oxidation state of Pd in the Pd/CeO 2 catalyst could be effectively regulated by controlling the exposure of (111) + (100) crystalline surfaces of the CeO 2 support, further optimizing the catalytic performance of the Pd/CeO 2 catalytic system.
