Carbon monoxide selective methanation (CO-SMET) holds promise for removing low-concentration CO in the hydrocarbon reforming for hydrogen (H 2 ) production process and is a deep CO removal technology suitable for low-temperature fuel cells. However, developing highly efficient CO-SMET catalysts remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report a supported catalyst (Ru 1.0 (Cl)/TiO 2 ) with highly dispersed ruthenium (Ru) metal on a high-specific-surface-area mesoporous titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) catalyst. This catalyst exhibits excellent performance in CO-SMET. It can reduce the CO concentration to below 10 ppm in a wide temperature range of 190–300 °C, and the outlet CO concentration can reach an ultra-low level of 0.2 ppm in the optimal temperature zone (210–220 °C). Through XPS and in situ DRIFTS characterizations, the crucial role of Ru–Cl species at the metal-support interface is revealed. The presence of chlorine atoms leads to electron enrichment in the Ru metal, enhancing its adsorption and activation of CO.

The valorization and toxicity reduction of phenolic substances are critical challenges for achieving green and sustainable development in the petroleum, coal, and biomass industries. This study investigated the phenolic model compound guaiacol hydrodeoxygenation over Ru/Al 2 O 3 catalysts, demonstrating that synthesis within an anaerobic glovebox significantly enhances catalytic activity compared to ambient synthesis. Four solvents (ethanol, methanol, tetrahydrofuran, and n-dodecane) were evaluated for their impact on guaiacol conversion and product distribution. Experimental results demonstrated that non-polar n-dodecane achieved 100 % guaiacol conversion and 92.8 % cyclohexane selectivity, attributed to weak catalyst-solvent interactions verified by first-principles calculations. Reaction optimization enabled > 90 % yields of 2-methoxycyclohexanol, cyclohexanol, and cyclohexane. Crucially, a novel low-temperature demethoxylation pathway via the intermediate 2-methoxy-1-cyclohexen-1-ol was identified through quantum chemistry calculations, offering a strategy to enhance cyclohexanol production. Kinetic analysis revealed apparent activation energies of 55 kJ/mol (demethoxylation) and 72 kJ/mol (dehydroxylation). The catalyst maintained stable performance over five cycles. These findings underscore the critical importance of catalyst synthesis, solvent environment, and reaction control in achieving efficient and selective guaiacol hydrodeoxygenation, offering strategies for green valorization and toxicity reduction of phenols.

Rational design of combined noble metals and earth abundant metal-based materials is important in the development of highly active and stable electrocatalysts with reduced noble metal loading toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). As a cheaper alternative to platinum (Pt), ruthenium (Ru) has similar bond strength with hydrogen. In this work, we develop carbon fiber-supported cobalt carbonate hydroxides nanowires for the deposition of Ru (CF@Ru–CoCH NWs) and achieve high HER performance under alkaline condition. Such novel catalyst exhibits a low Tafel slope (65 mV dec −1 ), small overpotential of, respectively, 66 and 121 mV at geometrical current density of −10 and −100 mA cm −2 . The superior performance, comparable to commercial Pt for HER, is attributed to the synergistic effect from Ru nanoparticles (NPs) and cobalt carbonate hydroxides nanowires (CoCH NWs). Dual-pathway kinetic analysis confirms that the CoCH NWs are able to lower the energy barrier of the Volmer step while Ru improves the Heyrovsky step to form hydrogen gas, thereby enhancing overall HER activity.

Ruthenium (Ru)-based materials, as a class of efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts, play an important role in hydrogen generation by electrolysis of water in an alkaline solution for clean hydrogen energy. Hybrid nanostructure (HN) materials, which include two or more components with distinct functionality, show better performance than their individual materials, since HN materials can potentially integrate their advantages and overcome the weaknesses. However, it remains a challenge to construct Ru-based HN materials with desired crystal phases for enhanced HER performances. Herein, a series of new Ru-based HN materials (t-Ru-RuS2, S-Ru-RuS2, and T-Ru-RuS2) through phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN) and chemical transformation are designed to achieve highly efficient HER properties. Owing to the plentiful formation of heterojunctions and amorphous/crystalline interfaces, the t-Ru-RuS2 HN delivers the most outstanding overpotential of 16 mV and owns a small Tafel slope of 29 mV dec–1 at a current density of 10 mA cm–2, which exceeds commercial Pt/C catalysts (34 mV, 38 mV dec–1). This work shows a new insight for HN and provides alternative opportunities in designing advanced electrocatalysts with low cost for HER in the hydrogen economy.

Ammonia borane is a promising hydrogen-storage material, and efficient catalysts for its hydrolytic dehydrogenation are vital for future hydrogen energy. Trace Ru-doped RuCo alloy nanoparticles supported on potassium citrate derived porous carbon nanosheets (CNS) were synthesized via wet-chemical method. The RuCo/CNS catalyst shows activity for AB hydrolytic dehydrogenation, achieving 100% hydrogen selectivity and the turnover frequency of 4286.1 mol H 2 mol Ru −1 min −1 under mild conditions. This activity originates from the improved mass transfer arising from the hierarchical pores of the CNS, the effective stabilization of active sites by the carbon matrix, and optimized Ru-Co electronic synergy in the nanoparticles.

Functional metal doping endows fluorescent carbon dots with richer physical and chemical properties, greatly expanding their potential in the biomedical field. Nonetheless, fabricating carbon dots with integrated functionality for diagnostic and therapeutic modalities remains challenging. Herein, we develop a simple strategy to prepare Gd/Ru bimetallic doped fluorescent carbon dots (Gd/Ru-CDs) via a one-step microwave-assisted method with Ru(dcbpy) 3 Cl 2 , citric acid, polyethyleneimine, and GdCl 3 as precursors. Multiple techniques were employed to characterize the morphology and properties of the obtained carbon dots. The Gd/Ru-CDs are high mono-dispersity, uniform spherical nanoparticles with an average diameter of 4.2 nm. Moreover, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) confirmed the composition and surface properties of the carbon dots. In particular, the successful doping of Gd/Ru enables the carbon dots not only show considerable magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performance but also obtain better fluorescence (FL) properties, especially in the red emission area. More impressively, it has low cytotoxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and efficient reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation ability, making it an effective imaging-guided tumor treatment reagent. In vivo experiments have revealed that Gd/Ru-CDs can achieve light-induced tumor suppression and non-invasive fluorescence/magnetic resonance bimodal imaging reagents to monitor the treatment process of mouse tumor models. Thus, this simple and efficient carbon dot manufacturing strategy by doping functional metals has expanded avenues for the development and application of multifunctional all-in-one theranostics.

Enhancing the catalytic activity for oxygen evolution and oxygen reduction reactions is critical for rechargeable metal-air batteries. Herein, coral-like Ru-doped cobalt oxide nanofibers are prepared by electrospinning and subsequent heat treatment, which reduce the charge transfer resistance of cobalt oxide and optimize its active sites. Moreover, the large specific surface area and rich porosity of the one-dimensional nanomaterials prepared by the electrospinning method markedly improved the catalytic activity. Under the same catalyst load, Ru-doped cobalt oxide nanofibers have an overpotential of 300 mV, which is smaller than that of ruthenium oxide. In the oxygen reduction reaction, the positive half-wave potential of Ru-doped cobalt oxide nanofibers and Pt/C is the same (0.81 V). This work combines the strategies of doping and the advantages of electrospinning nanofibers to make a breakthrough in the catalytic activity of doped cobalt oxide nanofibers, and provides a new basis for the design of one-dimensional nanofiber bifunctional catalysts.

Ruthenium (Ru) catalysts are highly efficient in the hydrogenolysis of polyolefin waste, converting the waste into valuable alkanes. However, excessive C–C bond cleavage of strongly adsorbed olefin intermediates often leads to low-value byproducts, primarily methane (CH4). In this study, we developed a Ru–Ni bimetallic catalyst supported on silica (RuxNiy/SiO2) that directly modulates olefin intermediate adsorption to suppress CH4 formation during polyolefin hydrogenolysis. By alloying low-electronegativity Ni with high-electronegativity Ru, we shift the Ru d-band center through electron transfer from Ni, weakening the adsorption of olefin intermediates. This modification facilitates hydrogenation and desorption pathways while suppressing excessive C–C bond cleavage. The resulting catalyst achieved complete polyethylene (PE) conversion at 250 °C, with 96.9 wt% liquid product yield and only 2 wt% CH4 production. Gasoline- and diesel-range alkanes (C5–C22) accounted for 77.1 wt% of the products. Additionally, the catalyst demonstrated excellent performance with real-world single-use polyolefin products. This work provides a new approach for controlling intermediate adsorption in polyolefin recycling, offering a promising path to enhance the efficiency and selectivity of plastic recycling technologies.

Sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics impede alkaline electrolysis. Here, vertically aligned Ru-decorated, Fe-doped Ni 3 S 2 nanowire arrays on Ni foam (Ru-NFS) are synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal route. Distinct from conventional Ni 3 S 2 →NiOOH systems, we operate in a low-Ru, Fe-co-modulated regime where Ru remains S-ligated and highly dispersed, evidenced by the absence of Ru-Ru scattering in EXAFS. This coordination accelerates NiOOH formation, enhances charge transfer, and mitigates Ru loss, yielding Ru-normalized activity beyond single-modulated controls. In 1.0 M KOH (iR-corrected), Ru-NFS requires only 206 and 245 mV to reach 10 and 100 mA cm -2 , respectively, and sustains stable operation. Mechanistically, COHP analysis shows that Fe substitution and, more strongly, Ru incorporation progressively weaken Ni-S bonds in the precursor, enabling rapid anodic reconstruction to NiOOH. On the reconstructed surface, DOS/PDOS reveal a d-manifold shifted toward EF with increased states, implying higher hole availability and optimized M-O covalency for coupled proton-electron transfer. DFT-CHE at 1.23 V (RHE) identifies *O→*OOH as the thermodynamic RDS, with ΔG reduced from 0.70 eV (NiOOH) to 0.48 eV (Fe-NiOOH) and 0.38 eV (Ru,Fe-NiOOH). Overall, Ru-Fe co-modulation couples reconstruction control with adsorbate-binding optimization, providing a blueprint for robust high-rate OER anodes.

The development of stable and efficient alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) electrocatalysts is critical for advancing alkaline exchange membrane fuel cells. Ruthenium (Ru) shows promise as a HOR catalyst with cost advantages over platinum (Pt) but suffers from low intrinsic activity and oxidation vulnerability. Herein, we combine lattice-matched epitaxial growth with active metal carrier interaction (RMSI). For the first time, a simple impregnation-annealing method was employed to achieve lattice-matched epitaxial growth between Ru nanoparticles and titanium carbide (TiC) during deposition on the TiC surface, providing an efficient and stable interfacial structure for the RMSI. RMSI promotes electron transfer from TiC to Ru, modulates Ru’s electronic structure, and optimizes its hydrogen adsorption Gibbs free energy (△GH*). Experimental data and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the synergy between the epitaxial structure and RMSI significantly enhances the alkaline HOR activity. Consequently, the Ru/TiC-200 catalyst exhibits a higher kinetic current density than Pt/C, with a performance 5.31 times that of Ru/C.
