The insoluble dietary fiber (IDF) of pomegranate peel residue was treated by mixed solid-state fermentation (SSF) of Aspergillus niger and Rhizopus oryzae. The content of bound polyphenols (BP) reached a maximum of 26.50 mg GAE/g DW after 5 days of fermentation, which was 3.22-fold higher than that of the unfermented group. The BP release during fermentation was strongly correlated with the activities of CMCase, xylanase and β-glucosidase. A total of 35 polyphenolic compounds and catabolic metabolites were identified, and potential biotransformation pathways were proposed. Structural characterization of IDF before and after fermentation via SEM, XRD, and TGA revealed that the degradation of cellulose and disruption of hemicellulose and hemicellulose–lignin complexes played a key role in BP release. Moreover, the postfermentation BP in vitro showed enhanced antioxidant capacity and pronounced inhibition of α-amylase/α-glucosidase. Collectively, the mixed SSF significantly promote the BP release, facilitating pomegranate peel valorization.

As a novel surface modifier and interfacial cross-linker, the potential of metal polyphenol networks (MPNs) in modifying Pickering stabilizers remains unclear. In this work, tannic acid-Fe 3+ (TA-Fe 3+ ) was used to modify coconut protein-pectin complex particles (CP-PE) to improve their emulsifying properties for stabilizing high internal phase Pickering emulsions (HIPPEs). The results showed that the formation of a thick supramolecular network coating on the surface of CP-PE and CP-PE-TA-Fe 3+ exhibited a larger particle size, lower H 0 , and suitable wettability. CP-PE-TA-Fe 3+ could adsorb and anchor at the oil-water interface more rapidly, forming a spatial barrier with higher viscoelasticity and mechanical properties to resist disturbances from the processing environment. Moreover, CP-PE-TA-Fe 3+ -stabilized HIPPEs exhibited ideal viscoelasticity and excellent physical stability, enabling them to serve as outstanding inks for 3D printing with superior printing adaptability and printing precision (“letter E" 97.60 ± 0.02 % and “flower” 99.82 ± 0.00 %). Our work provided novel insights into improving the emulsifying properties of food-grade Pickering stabilizers and offered valuable information for broadening the potential applications of MPNs in the food industry.

The effective separation of dyes and inorganic salts is highly desirable for recycling inorganic salts and water resource in printing and dyeing wastewater treatment. In this work, tannic acid (TA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) were grafted on the PES/Fe ultrafiltration membrane via the coordination assembly and Michael addition strategy to fabricated a loose nanofiltration membrane (LNM). The effect of PEI concentration on membrane morphologies and properties was systematically investigated. The membrane surface becomes more hydrophilic and transforms into positive charge after the PEI grafting. The optimized PES/Fe-TA-PEI membrane possesses high pure water flux (124.6 L·m−2·h−1) and excellent dye rejections (98.5%, 99.8%, 98.4%, and 86.4% for Congo red, Eriochrome black T, Alcian blue 8GX, and Bromophenol blue, respectively) under 2 bar operation pressure. Meanwhile, the LNM showed a high Alcian blue 8GX rejection (>98.4%) and low NaCl rejection (<5.3%) for the dye/salt mixed solutions separation. Moreover, the PES/Fe-TA-PEI LNM exhibited good antifouling performance and long-term performance stability. These results reveal that such LNM shows great potential for effective fractionation of dyes and salts and recycling of textile wastewater. Keywords:loose nanofiltration;dye desalination;polyphenol;polyethyleneimine;grafting

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) presents formidable treatment barriers due to dysfunctional vasculature and an immunosuppressive microenvironment. To address these challenges, we engineered a bioinspired near-infrared (NIR)-responsive copper–polyphenol nanoplatform, SCP, to implement a NIR-triggered “bridge-and-attack” therapeutic strategy. This nanoassembly was constructed through the coordination of salvianolic acid B (SAB) with copper ions and further stabilized by a polydopamine (PDA) shell. Upon NIR irradiation, SAB and Cu 2+ were co-released from SCP, enabling simultaneous vascular remodeling and tumor cell killing. The released SAB promoted vascular normalization, increasing pericyte coverage to 51.6% and alleviating tumor hypoxia, thereby facilitating intratumoral penetration and immune-cell infiltration. Meanwhile, released Cu 2+ , together with PDA-mediated photothermal activation, induced cuproptosis and immunogenic cell death (ICD). This combined remodeling of the tumor microenvironment enhanced CD8 + T cell infiltration and achieved a tumor inhibition rate of 88.5% in 4T1 tumor-bearing mice with favorable systemic biosafety. Overall, this interfacial nanomaterial design integrates vascular normalization, photothermal-enhanced cuproptosis, and immunotherapy, providing a promising materials-based strategy for TNBC treatment.

This research investigated the inhibitory effect and mechanism of 6,7-dimethoxy-3H-quinazolin-4-one (DMQ) on polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and bacteria ( Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus ), as well as its anti-browning properties on fresh-cut apples. The findings demonstrated that DMQ potently inhibited PPO activity with an IC 50 of 98 ± 3 μmol L −1 . Subsequently, the inhibitory mechanism of DMQ against PPO was elucidated through enzyme kinetics, fluorescence analysis, as well as computer molecular simulation. The results revealed that the interaction between DMQ and PPO led to structural elongation and relaxation of the enzyme, and influenced the microenvironment of amino acid residues at the binding region. These changes modified secondary structure and molecular conformation of PPO, ultimately resulting in the reduction of catalytic activity. Antibacterial experiments demonstrated that DMQ exhibited remarkable antibacterial properties by enhancing cell membrane permeability in E . coli and S . aureus , contributing to cellular contents leakage and bacterial cell death. Furthermore, DMQ delayed the enzymatic browning of fresh-cut apples by controlling phenolic metabolism. In particular, it was confirmed by cytotoxicity and stability tests that DMQ was safe at experimental concentrations and had good thermal stability and photostability. These discoveries offered a theoretical framework for the potential application of DMQ in food preservation.

This study applied a novel strategy to modify an inert fluorine-containing surface by combining alkaline lignin (AL) and silk fibroin (SF), introducing many active sites. The intercalation sites of SF during the formation of the AL coating allow the shape of the Mortise-Tenon metal-organic framework (MOF). MOF-303 with a Mortise-Tenon structure was grown on the surface of the membrane. The PVDF@MOF-303 membrane possesses superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic properties. The modified membrane showed perfect resistance to oil adhesion. Stable oil-in-water emulsions and toxic heavy metal ions can be separated by the PVDF@MOF-303 membrane with a Mortise-Tenon structure. This membrane has achieved outstanding oil-in-water emulsion separation efficiency (over 99.2 %) and flux (over 4200.0 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ). After ten repeated experiments, a separation efficiency of 93.0 % was obtained. This membrane was used for heavy metal adsorption with high capacity (over 3374.4 mg m −2 ) and efficiency (over 99.6 %). Even more importantly, harmful heavy metal ions soluble in water can be effectively removed during emulsion separation. It can modify other substrates due to the easy preparation method and efficient performance described in this report.

A combination of germination and extrusion was applied to whole grain corn to increase its nutritional composition, functional properties and non-anthocyanin polyphenol profile, especially related to in vitro hypoglycemic effects. Individual germination and extrusion both led to an increase in soluble dietary fiber and lysine, methionine , tryptophan content, while insoluble dietary fiber content decreased. Extruded germinated whole corn flour (EGWCF) had a higher water absorption and solubility index, showing 103 and 575% increases over untreated ones, respectively. Germination increased free, bound phenolic acid and bound flavonoid content to 169, 230 and 311%, respectively. The total phenolic acid and flavonoid content of EGWCF was 260 and 249% of WCF, respectively. Germination increased the polyphenol composition from 12 to 15 species. Phenolic profiles of EGWCF exhibited collective effects, showing three new phenolic compounds . Polyphenol extracts showed more potent activity against α -glucosidase rather than α -amylase. Free form polyphenols had stronger inhibitory activity than the bound forms. Compared with WCF, free and bound polyphenol extracts from EGWCF increased the anti- α -glucosidase activity by 221 and 40%, and increased the anti- α -amylase activity by 105 and 108%.

Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.) is a functional food with long medical usage and excellent health-promoting effects. In this study, comparative metabolomics analysis between the yellow hawthorn berry (Crataegus pinnatifida) and the red-skinned ones was first carried out with the peel and flesh separated to fully understand the polyphenol composition and metabolite variations. A total of 453 polyphenols was characterized, among which phenolic acids and flavonoids were abundant, and were closely relevant to the antioxidant capacity of hawthorn fruits. Polyphenol profile showed accession-specific accumulation in peel or flesh of different colored hawthorn. The unique yellow hawthorn was found to have few anthocyanins but show enhanced flux to synthesize flavones and flavonols, especially flavone C-glycosides and acylated flavonol glycosides. The specific acylation decoration includes acetylation, p-coumaroylation, and malonylation. In addition, the yellow hawthorn showed excellent α-glucosidase inhibitory effect, which might be associated with the high concentration of 8 polyphenols including 5 phenolic acids, 2 flavone C-glycosides, and an acylated flavonol glycoside, namely quercetin-7-O-(6''-malonyl)glucoside. Such acylated flavonol showed the highest correlation ship with the inhibition effect of hawthorn fruits on α-glucosidase, and was predicted to had the lowest binding energy with the enzyme by molecular docking analysis, indicating its great potential as a strong α-glucosidase inhibitors and an important antidiabetic ingredient in yellow hawthorn. Thus, acylated flavonol glycosides and C-glycosyl flavones might be chemotaxonomic markers differentiating varieties and bioactivities of yellow hawthorn from the traditional red-skinned ones. These findings complement the existing knowledge on the metabolite composition and nutritional properties of hawthorn fruits.

Photinia × fraseri is an important ornamental plant species widely cultivated in China with vibrant leaf color. However, there is limited information about the difference of phenolic constituents and bioactivity among P. fraseri leaves (PFL) with varied color, and the key factor which determines its color formation. Therefore, the aim of the present study was devoted to establishing the correlation among leaf color, anthocyanins and polyphenols profiles, together with antioxidant activity of PFL under varied light intensity. Results of color and pigment analysis on the four PFL groups indicated that total anthocyanins content was positively correlated with red color formation. Meanwhile, red leaves further exhibited a higher level of total anthocyanins (0.66 ± 0.02 mg/g), phenols (24.86 ± 1.33 mg/g), tannins (6.98 ± 0.23 mg/g), phenolic acids (73.60 ± 3.56 mg/g), condensed tannins (131.24 ± 5.51 mg/g), flavanols (3.42 ± 0.03 mg/g), flavonols (57.58 ± 0.19 mg/g), and antioxidant activities (0.17 ± 0.00 mmol/g for DPPH, 0.99 ± 0.06 mmol/g for ABTS, 1.73 ± 0.03 mmol/g for FRAP). Furthermore, a total of 11 phenolic compounds were identified from PFL, while caffeoylquinic acid derivatives and cyanidin-3- O -glucoside were the key phenolic compounds rich in red leaves. Principal component, hierarchical cluster, and correlation analysis indicated that high light intensity was the key factor responsible for the red color formation, as well as the high levels of total anthocyanins, phenolic acids and flavanols and antioxidant activities in the red leaves. Overall, the present study shall contribute to the exploration of the medicinal potential of the important horticultural plant P. fraseri and provide theoretical guidance for its further industrial development and application.

The consumption of wampee has traditionally been utilized to alleviate gastrointestinal inflammation and associated disorders; however, its exact mechanism has remained unknown. The aim of this study was to elucidate the therapeutic efficacy and underlying mechanism of wampee polyphenol extract (WPE) in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis (UC). The findings revealed that WPE alleviated diverse symptoms of UC, regulated various inflammatory cytokines, and effectively protected the colon tissue structure and barrier integrity, thereby inhibiting LPS translocation. Moreover, WPE restored the richness and diversity of gut microbiota and optimized its structure at the phylum and genus levels, causing a notable improvement in short- chain fatty acid (SCFA) metabolism, particularly acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid. Consequently, WPE was demonstrated to effectively suppress the LPS-induced TLR4-p38 MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathway by modulating gut microbiota and SCFA metabolism. These findings provided a theoretical basis for the use of wampee as a potential functional natural food for UC.

At present, there have been numerous studies on the surface modification of carbon fibers (CF); however, there are still problems such as toxic reagents and complex modification processes. This study proposes an environmentally benign modification strategy featuring mild reaction conditions and high efficiency, aiming to enhance both the interfacial bonding capacity between CF and epoxy resin matrices and the resultant mechanical performance. The metal polyphenol networks (MPN) were synthesized through coordination between tannic acid (TA) and Fe 3+ ions, which were subsequently co-deposited with polyethyleneimine (PEI) via phenol-amine conjugation to construct a hybrid MPN/PEI coating on fiber surfaces. The effect of the mass ratio of MPN to PEI on the deposition process was investigated. Maximum interfacial enhancement was achieved at an optimal MPN:PEI mass ratio of 1:2, as evidenced by comprehensive characterization. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), interfacial shear strength (IFSS), flexural strength, and transverse fiber bundles tensile strength (TFBT) of the composites were 84.17 MPa, 81.27 MPa, 1215.68 MPa, and 38.62 MPa, respectively, which were increased by 52.15%, 66.71%, 126.89%, and 89.97%, respectively, compared to the untreated CF composites. The use of biological materials for simple and efficient deposition provides a new idea for CF surface modification.

Scope Polyphenols are the major active substances in red jujube fruit, and their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities suggest their potential utility in the prevention of ulcerative colitis (UC). Methods and results In this study, the effect of polyphenol extracts from red jujube ( Ziziphus jujuba Mill. “Junzao”) (PERJ) on the dextron sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced UC mice is investigated. The result shows that PERJ effectively improves clinical symptoms, including food and water intake, the disease activity insex (DAI) and spleen index, and routine blood levels, and alleviates the shortening of the colon, in mice with DSS-induced UC. Meanwhile, PERJ remarkably decreases the expression of proinflammatory factors. Moreover, PERJ repairs intestinal barrier damage by increasing the expression level of mucin 2 and mucin 3, and the result is also confirmed in the histological assessment. Besides, the expression levels of Nod-like receptor family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) and mitogen-activated protein kinase cascade (MAPKs) signaling pathway-related proteins are inhibited by the PERJ administration. Finally, 16S rRNA sequencing analyses reveal that PERJ reverses intestinal microbiota dysbiosis by enhancing the abundance of Firmicutes and decreasing that of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes . Conclusion PERJ probably inhibits the development of UC by suppressing the NLRP3 and MAPKs signaling pathways and regulating gut microbiota homeostasis, and can be considered as a potential resource for preventing UC.
