Solid phosphoric acid (SPA) catalysts with different carriers were prepared and used for catalytic fast pyrolysis of poplar wood to produce levoglucosenone (LGO), a valuable anhydrosugar derivative that can be used in various organic synthesis applications. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) experiments were performed to evaluate the catalytic capabilities of these catalysts under different reaction conditions. The results indicated that SPA catalyst prepared with the SBA-15 carrier exhibited the best catalytic capability for selectively producing LGO. Both the catalytic pyrolysis temperature and catalyst-to-biomass ratio affected the pyrolytic products greatly. The maximal LGO yield reached as high as 8.2 wt% from poplar wood, obtained at the pyrolysis temperature of 300 °C and the catalyst-to-biomass ratio of 1. The by-products during the catalytic pyrolysis process were mainly acetic acid (AA) and furfural (FF). In addition, the SPA catalyst possessed better catalytic capability than the liquid phosphoric acid (H 3 PO 4 ) catalyst to produce LGO.

The catalytic pyrolysis of biomass is a promising technology for producing high-quality fuels and value-added chemicals. However, the development of this technology has been hindered by high coke formation and low target product yield. In this study, chemical liquid deposition (CLD) was adopted to improve the catalytic performance of HZSM-5 in the catalytic pyrolysis of biomass. The changes of the characteristics, including crystallographic structure, porosity and acidity, of the HZSM-5 zeolite after modification were analyzed by XRD, N 2 adsorption-desorption, FTIR and NH 3 -TPD. The results showed that CLD modification reduced the mesopore volume, pore opening size and the number of external acid sites without changing the micropore structure. Py-GC/MS (a pyrolyzer equipped with a gas chromatography-mass spectrometer) and kinetic analysis were used to analyze the catalytic performance of the parent and CLD-modified zeolites. It was found that the production of aromatics increased first and later decreased, reaching optimal levels at a 4% deposition of SiO 2 , while the selectivity of monoaromatics increased continuously. Additionally, CLD modification raised the energy barriers for the char/coke formation reactions and could inhibit its production. The deposition amount of 4% showed the best char/coke inhibitory effects for catalytic pyrolysis of cellulose, while the char/coke formation decreased continuously with the increase of the deposited amount of SiO 2 for catalytic pyrolysis of lignin.

Perfluoroocatane sulfonate (PFOS) has drawn increasing global attention due to its environmental omnipresence and adverse health effects. This study presents a synergistic strategy to address the dual challenge of legacy PFOS contamination and sustainable sewage sludge disposal by developing a novel, zinc-modified sludge-based biochar (Zn/SBC) for highly efficient PFOS removal. The innovation lies in the one-step pyrolysis using ZnCl 2 as an activator, which dramatically enhanced the specific surface area by 50-fold (to 261.33 m 2 /g) by creating a well-developed micro- and mesoporous structure. Under optimized conditions, 26%Zn/SBC exhibited a superior PFOS adsorption capacity of 60.14 mg/g, 5.83 times than that of pristine biochar, and achieved >99% removal across a wide pH range (3–11). The material exhibited remarkably stable performance, sustaining a removal efficiency over 93.6% in the presence of high concentration of competing ions and humic acid. After 5 cycles of repeated uses, 26%Zn/SBC remained highly reactive in adsorption for PFOS. In addition, the superior adsorption of PFOS by optimized 26%Zn/SBC is attributed to a unique concurrent mechanism, including electrostatic attraction facilitated by the elevated point of zero charge (pH PZC = 8.1), surface complexation with Zn/ZnO sites, π-anion interaction, and hydrophobic effects. This study not only presents a high-performance and low-cost adsorbent for PFOS remediation, which holds the potential for more cost-effective PFAS removal, but also establishes a sustainable "waste-to-wealth" strategy, paving the way for practical solutions to concentration persistent organic pollutants in aquatic environments.

The pyrolysis of pyridine, a model compound for fuel-nitrogen in coal, biomass, and tar, was investigated in a flow reactor at a pressure of 30 Torr and a temperature range from 773 to 1473 K. Twenty-seven species, including three radicals, three sets of isomers, nine hydrocarbons and nine nitrogenous species, were identified and quantified by synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry. Several intermediates were newly detected compared with previous pyridine pyrolysis studies based on the photoionization efficiency spectra including cyanides, a benzene isomer, and resonance-stabilized radicals (propargyl and benzyl radicals). A new kinetic model for pyridine pyrolysis was developed and validated against the measured data. Kinetic modeling, rate-of-production and sensitivity analysis were performed to reveal the pyrolysis kinetics of pyridine and the formation of the key products. The results indicate that the decomposition of pyridine is dominated by the H-abstraction reactions. Hydrocarbon radicals, alkenes and alkynes are mainly produced by the elimination of HCN from nitrogenous intermediates. The formation of nitrogenous products relates to the removal of acetylene from pyridine. A new growth route from C 3 HN to C 5 HN and C 7 HN was observed and analyzed, which has not been reported previously regarding the pyrolysis studies of fuel-N. By comparing the pyridine pyrolysis with pyrrole pyrolysis experiments, the influence of different C-N bond structures on reaction mechanisms and product distributions was revealed. Results of this work are helpful in deepening the understanding of pyridine conversion behaviors related to coal and biomass combustion and conversion processes.

Measuring the CO 2 concentration is the base of carbon accounting which aims to abate the greenhouse gas emission. This paper pays attention to developing sensitive material for CO 2 detection in vehicle exhaust. For this purpose, La 1-x FeO 3-δ nanoparticles with A-site deficiency were synthesized by flame spray pyrolysis (FSP). The dynamic response of the prototype CO 2 sensors was evaluated by checking the gas-mixture with 5%–15% CO 2 . It was observed that the amount of A-site deficiency would obviously affect the performance of the material. La 0.95 FeO 3-δ sensor exhibits the highest response (S = 3.38) and a relatively short response time (t 90 = 114s) among the serial La 1-x FeO 3-δ sensors (x = 0, 0.02, 0.05, 0.07 and 0.1). The improvement of the response might be attributed to the increase of oxygen vacancies and the higher valence of B-site cations caused by the introduction of A-site deficiency. Furthermore, the sensor exhibited good selectivity against NH 3 , NO, NO 2 and CO, as well as good repeatability. However, water vapor is still a disturbance in the response. The response at 40% RH and 80% RH are 2.11 and 1.73, respectively. Finally, the sensing mechanism based on the participation of the oxygen vacancies was discussed.

Understanding the mechanism of thermal degradation of a material may suggest a promising way for further improving its thermal properties. poly(melamine-co-phenolic resin) (P(M-co-PR)) has been widely used in flame resistant and fire-proof materials. Our characterization of the thermal degradation of P(M-co-PR) is described in this work. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses were used to investigate the structural evolution during the thermal degradation of the copolymer. The evolutions of C = N and C-N bonding in heteroaromatic rings were monitored during the degradation process by C1s and N1s XPS spectra. The degradation processes of P(M-co-PR) is divided into three stages. The degradation kinetics of P(M-co-PR) was researched by using the Ozawa and Kissinger activation energy equation methods. The conclusion is that the Kissinger equation applied to the first stage, and the Ozawa equation applied to the second and third stages.

Non-precious metal-nitrogen-carbon (MNC) electrocatalysts have gained tremendous attention as promising electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the most applicable strategies for the synthesis of MNC materials heavily rely on pyrolysis treatment, which may easily lead to metal aggregation and subsequent degradation of catalytic performance. Herein, we developed a pyrolysis-free strategy for preparing MNC materials, which was demonstrated by achieving ultrathin cobalt-nitrogen-carbon (CoNC) layer with dense atomically dispersed cobalt sites depositing on graphene oxide (GO) via simple treatment of Co salt and GO in formamide. The formamide-derived CoNC layer deposited on GO (termed as f-CoNC/GO) could be controlled in 1‒2 nm thick. Remarkably, the f-CoNC/GO composite without pyrolysis exhibited excellent bifunctional performance toward ORR and OER, which was attributed to the dense atomically dispersed Co-N x sites and improved conductivity by GO substrate. Furthermore, the f-CoNC/GO-assembled rechargeable Zn-air battery showed highly efficient and stable performance, demonstrating our pyrolysis-free method to be straightforward, cost-effective, and feasible for the scalable production of MNC electrocatalysts.

Balancing performance, cost, and end-of-life management remains a challenge for sustainable polyethylene alternatives. This work investigates the thermal degradation pathways of fully bio-based poly(alkylene sebacate)s synthesized from sebacic acid and C 2 -C 6 α,ω-alkanediols. By systematically varying diol length and parity, we reveal that the pyrolysis kinetics are fundamentally governed by the interplay between ester dipole alignment and methylene segment length. In poly(ethylene sebacate) (PESe), the combination of antiparallel dipoles and short ethylene glycol segments induces dense inter-chain interactions and a homogeneous activation energy landscape, triggering a single-stage F1 random chain scission. Conversely, polyesters lacking this structural uniformity, whether due to odd-even parity (PPdSe, PPtSe) or extended even-even segments (PBSe, PHSe), preserve the energetic distinction between amorphous and crystalline domains. This phase separation leads to a sequential two-stage F2 to F3 degradation. Beyond programmable thermal stability, these polyesters exhibit tensile strengths comparable to high-density polyethylene (HDPE), resist neutral hydrolysis, yet are susceptible to enzymatic degradation and closed-loop chemical recycling into monomers. These findings establish diol parity and conformational constraints as precise design parameters for tailoring the end-of-life profiles of sustainable polyesters.

Carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes with exceptional separation performance and scalable processing are promising for precise gas separation. However, their broad applicability is hampered owing to stability issues, mainly resulting from physical aging. Herein, we manipulate the pyrolysis temperature (550 °C, 650 °C and 750 °C) to regulate the gas transport properties and control the physical aging of CMS membranes derived from 6FDA-DAM polyimide. The morphology, chemical composition and pore size of the membranes were characterized using SEM, IR, XPS and XRD. Results demonstrated that the pore structure of CMS membranes shows densification with increasing the pyrolysis temperature, affording enhanced separation efficiency for gas pairs: H 2 /N 2 , H 2 /CH 4 , and CO 2 /CH 4 pairs based on the size-sieving effect. Moreover, the effect of aging is more considerable for membranes pyrolyzed at a higher temperature. In addition, the membrane subjected to pre-aging treatment via vacuum storage exhibit better, stable gas separation performance beyond the upper-bond for polymeric membranes. The separation mechanism of the CMS membranes reveals that gas permeation behavior is dominated by diffusion. Tailoring gas permeation and physical aging can provide an alternative approach to tune the gas transport properties of CMS membranes.

In order to reduce the risks of sulfur-containing contaminants present in biofuels, the effects of microwave and content of hydrogen donor on the cracking of C–S bonds and the migration of sulfur were studied by co–pyrolysis of biomass and plastic. The synergistic mechanism of microwave and hydrogen donor was explored from the perspective of deducing the evolution of sulfur–containing compounds based on microwave thermogravimetric analysis . By combining temperature–weight curves, it was found that microwaves and hydrogen radicals promoted the cracking of sulfur–containing compounds and increased the mass loss of biomass during pyrolysis . The mixing ratio of hydrogen donor (plastic) was the key parameter resulting in the removal of sulfur from oil. By adjusting the mixing ratio, the yield of co–pyrolyzed oil was three times higher than that of cow dung pyrolysis alone and the relative removal rate of sulfur reached 73.67%. The relative content of sulfur in the oil was reduced by 73.77% due to the escape of sulfur–containing gases (H 2 S, COS and C 2 H 5 SH) and the formation of sulfate crystals in the char. Microwave selectively heated sulfur–containing organics and hydrogen radicals stimulated the breaking of C–S bonds, which improved the cracking efficiency of the oil. This breaking will provide a theoretical and technological reference for the environmentally friendly treatment of biomass and biofuels.

Investigation on the distribution and mechanism of co-pyrolysis products is vital to the directional control and high-value utilization of agriculture solid wastes. Co-pyrolysis, devolatilization, kinetics characteristics, and evolution paths of corn stalk (CS) and low-density-polyethylene (LDPE) were investigated via thermogravimetric experiments. The co-pyrolysis behaviors could be separated into two stages: firstly, the degradation of CS (150– 400 °C); secondly, the degradation of CS (400– 550 °C). The devolatilization index (DI) increased with the addition of LDPE. Furthermore, a combination of devolatilization chemical analysis with product analysis to analyze the intrinsic mechanism during co-pyrolysis. The results indicated that the yield of alkanes and olefin in gas products increased with the addition of LDPE. Additionally, LDPE pyrolysis maybe abstract hydrogen from CS pyrolysis and evolved into hydrogen, methane, and ethylene. Further, the co-pyrolysis kinetic parameters were computed by using model-free isoconversion methods, which showed promotion of CS pyrolysis and the reduced activation energy. All the activation energy were declined, which indicated a “bidirectional positive effect” during co-pyrolysis. The mean activation energy of P-cellulose (P-CE), P-hemicellulose (P-HM), P-lignin (P-LG), and LDPE decreased by 23.49 %, 12.89 %, 15.36 %, and 27.82 %, respectively. This study further proves the hydrogen donor transfer pathway in the co-pyrolysis process of CS and LDPE, providing theoretical support for the resource utilization of agricultural solid waste.

This study presented a novel method for the simultaneous generation of monophenol chemicals and carbon-based CO 2 adsorbent from polycarbonate (PC) by using salt solution-enhanced pyrolysis. The regulatory functions of several factors on the production of 4-isopropenylphenol (IPP) and phenol were investigated using a laboratory-scale pyrolysis reactor , including salt solution type (neutral, acidic, and alkaline), solution concentration, and pyrolysis temperature. The results revealed that the Na 2 CO 3 solution exhibited the best ability to enhance the preparation of IPP and phenol. At Na 2 CO 3 concentration of 1 mol/L and pyrolysis temperature of 600 °C, the optimum yields of IPP and phenol reached 28.83 wt% and 33.77 wt%, respectively. The pyrolysis char (PCSC) obtained under this condition exhibited good CO 2 adsorption behavior with a maximum adsorption capacity of 1.75 mmol/g at 30 °C because of its well-formed porous structure and copious oxygen-containing functional groups.
