A superhydrophobic magnetic nanomaterial, Fe 3 O 4 @C16&TMS, was synthesized by hexadecylating the surface of the Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles and sealing the residual hydroxyl groups. The nanomaterial exhibits a high specific surface area of 45.3 m²/g, and superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 158.11°. The high specific surface area offers numerous adsorption sites, and the superhydrophobic characteristics of the synthesized nanomaterial can selectively enrich non-polar volatile methylsiloxanes (VMSs) through hydrophobic interactions, thereby significantly enhancing extraction efficiency and reducing matrix interference. Notably, no significant decline in performance was observed after 6 consecutive reuse cycles. Based on this material, a rapid and simple method for the determination of VMSs in water was developed using magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. The method enabled effective extraction of VMSs from water within 20 min, achieving recoveries ranging from 70.4% to 117.0%. The method limit of quantitation (LOQ) was 0.004 ng/mL, with intra-day precision (RSD) ranging from 0.9% to 3.9%. Analysis of real water samples revealed contamination in all 16 selected water bodies, with five specific VMSs species detected at concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 0.52 ng/mL. In summary, the proposed method enabled rapid and simple determination of VMSs in water samples, demonstrating significant potential for environmental analysis applications. Mild and efficient degradation of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste requires natural PET hydrolases. However, their inherent limitations, such as high cost, poor operational stability, and catalytic working temperatures below the glass transition temperature of PET, urgently necessitate the advancement of highly thermostable systems with thermophilic catalysis performance. Here, we develop a hydrolase-mimicking thermophilic nanozyme using MgAl layered double oxide with the “memory effect”, which exhibits remarkable catalytic activity and structural stability over multiple reuse cycles. Moreover, different from traditional nanozymes that usually require the ·OH radical-involving mechanism for microplastic degradation, the catalytic hydrolysis capability of thermophilic nanozyme originates from abundant Lewis basic sites that activate water molecules to release OH − ions, thereby facilitating the degradation of PET powders and films under mild conditions. By exemplifying the superior degrading performance toward various polyesters and commercial plastic bottle pellets, thermophilic nanozymes provide an effective method for eliminating polyester microplastics with a distinctive hydrolytic degradation process and may inspire future explorations into the structural mimicry of natural hydrolases.

Wireless communication technology permeates modern society, with low-frequency bands such as the C-band (4–6 GHz) serving as primary operational frequencies. The potential environmental impact of microwave radiation from these bands has garnered significant attention. However, the longer wavelengths characteristic of low-frequency signals necessitate larger absorber dimensions, presenting a critical challenge for developing lightweight microwave absorption materials. Herein, the design idea of synergizing the intrinsic absorption of multi-dimensional magnetic powder and the scattering mechanism of microporous structure was proposed. Lightweight porous polyurethane (PU) composites co-modified by the flaky carbonyl iron (FCI)/spherical carbonyl iron (SCI) were successfully obtained by a one-step foaming method. The FCI/SCI/PU achieved a minimum reflection loss per unit density of − 44 dB·cm 3 /g. This composite foam material shows advantages of easy preparation, low cost, and excellent low-frequency absorption performance, which has a great application prospect in creating an electromagnetic clean and safe environment. Meanwhile, this coordinated design strategy of magnetic constituents and microporous structures provides a reference for the development of low-frequency microwave absorption materials.

With the increased demand for food safety, how to detect food spoilage in real time is widely researched. A intelligent film of konjac glucomannan (KGM)/sodium alginate (SA)/carboxylated cellulose nanofibers (CCN) with varying concentrations of Roselle extracts (REs) (KSC/REs) were prepared in this work. The physicochemical properties, functional properties and practical applications of the KSC/REs film were systematically evaluated. Specifically, FT-IR, XRD, XPS and SEM analyses indicate that rare earth elements (REs) have successfully incorporated into the KSC film via hydrogen bonding. In addition, REs enhance the film's thickness, tensile strength, antioxidant activity and thermal stability through hydrogen bonding interactions. As the concentration of REs increased, the film's transmittance (TS) rose by 357%, while its water vapour permeability (WVP) decreased by approximately 44%. The KSC/REs films with varying concentrations of REs could exhibit pH-responsiveness in different pH environments. Notably, the KSC/REs films could detect the metamorphosis of chicken, pork, and shrimp through color change and the results became more pronounced with the concentration of REs. Through the membrane's ΔE value, it was found that at different pH levels, the ΔE value of the KSC/RES-12 membrane was generally around 10 greater than that of the KSC/RES-3 membrane. This indicates that increased concentrations of REs result in more pronounced colour changes in the membrane. Briefly, a bio-based intelligent packaging film was developed in this work, demonstrating potential applications in meat freshness monitoring.

Rapid glucose detection holds significance to diabetes. Here, a novel colorimetric glucose sensor for interstitial fluid (ISF) glucose detection is proposed, comprising a gradient porous polyglycolic acid (PGA) microneedle array patch (MAP) for ISF extraction and a porous 3,3’,5,5’-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB)-functionalized PGA film for glucose sensing. Instead of using pore-forming agents, porous PGA structure is fabricated by solvent volatility method, which brings the benefit of eliminating residual agents and enabling the formation of uniform, tunable micropores. PGA MAP was designed and fabricated with a gradient porosity from tip (7.2 ± 2.3%, N = 10) to the substrate (48.5 ± 1.1%, N = 10), providing high mechanical strength at the tip and hygroscopicity across the microneedle. With a compression failure force of 0.51 ± 0.13 N ( N = 10), it successfully punctured artificial skin model and absorbed 1.40 ± 0.06 µL of liquid in 1 min ( N = 10). By using the co-precipitation method, TMB was uniformly distributed inside the microstructure of porous PGA film. It effectively prevents the color errors caused by coffee ring effect. Furthermore, enzymes were well immobilized onto TMB-functionalized PGA film due to its hydrophilicity and porosity. Finally, the sensor exhibits uniform, distinct, and linear color changes in response to glucose with a detection limit of 0.13 mM in the range of 2 to 10 mM. Shape memory droplet manipulation platforms have garnered widespread attention due to their programmable droplet control capabilities. Current research primarily focuses on superhydrophobic surfaces and slippery lubricant-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS); however, vulnerable surface micro/nanostructures and loss of lubricant oils are unavoidable. Herein, we report a shape memory quasi-liquid polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) brush surface that can avoid the above imperfections. The surface was prepared by introducing a layer of SiO 2 as a “bridge” on a shape memory epoxy substrate to provide abundant functional active groups for grafting PDMS brushes. By precisely controlling the thickness of the SiO 2 layer and the grafting condition of the PDMS brushes, the obtained surface shows good shape memory property and low adhesion to diverse liquids with different surface tensions. Reversible anisotropic/isotropic droplets sliding control for both water and organic droplets was demonstrated through dynamic introduction/removal of the groove structures on the surface, proving the excellent droplet manipulation function based on the combination of shape memory property and the low adhesion of the PDMS brushes. Furthermore, the obtained material can be used as a functional coating for diverse substrates to impart anti-fouling and self-cleaning properties. This work proposed the use of a nanoscale SiO 2 layer as a “bridge”, which offers a strategy to address the challenge of grafting PDMS brushes onto a polymer surface. Meanwhile, given the excellent advantages of quasi-liquid PDMS brushes and programmable controllability of shape memory polymer, this work could provide some fresh ideas for the development of a droplet manipulation platform. The unique physiological barriers and rapid clearance of the ocular surface result in less than 5% bioavailability of topical drugs, forcing frequent high-dose administration, reducing compliance, and risking toxicity. Existing ophthalmic semi-solid formulations can delay clearance but often cause blurred vision and foreign body sensation due to high viscosity, limiting clinical use. In this study, a polysaccharide-based dual-dynamic crosslinked hydrogel (HC gels) was prepared via an in situ Schiff base reaction between aldehyde-functionalized hyaluronic acid and aminated carboxymethylcellulose under physiological conditions for sustained ocular drug delivery. By modulating the gelation kinetics, a controllable transition from a low-viscosity solution to a gel (15–384 s) was achieved. The in situ -formed gel dynamically adapts to the ocular surface during blinking, forming a thin, uniform, transparent layer that ensures conformal coverage, resists blinking and tear clearance, and significantly extends drug retention. In a rat model of uveitis, HC gels effectively alleviated inflammation via sustained dexamethasone release. Overall, HC gels provide a novel strategy for safe, effective, and sustained ocular drug delivery. The alternative text for this image may have been generated using AI.

To address the critical challenge of suppressing glass-phosphor interface reactions in high-melting-point phosphor-in-glass (PiG) for high-power laser illumination, this study fabricates a Y 3 Al 5 O 12 :Ce 3+ (YAG:Ce) phosphor-in-silica glass (YAG:Ce-PiSG) with high quantum efficiency and stability by regulating alkali metal oxides. Incorporation of Cs 2 O notably inhibits SiO 2 -YAG:Ce reactions, maintaining the PiSG’s internal quantum efficiency (IQE) at 97.7% of pure YAG:Ce (88.3% even after 1400 °C calcination for 2 h), while smaller alkali ions (Li + , Na + ) accelerate YAG:Ce decomposition. Cs 2 CO 3 acts as a flux to promote the melting of nano-SiO 2 , thereby facilitating the formation of a dense, transparent glass matrix. Owing to the large ionic radius of Cs + and its weak interaction with oxygen ions, the ready generation of non-bridging oxygen (NBO) is suppressed, consequently enabling the formation of a complete silica glass network that prevents alkali metal ions from etching the YAG:Ce phosphor. Leveraging the mixed alkali effect (10% Li 2 O + 5% Cs 2 O), the PiSG retains excellent luminescence and resists 200 °C hydrothermal treatment for 10 h. The PiG film-sapphire device delivers 3080 lm luminous flux and 213 lm W −1 efficiency under blue laser excitation. These findings demonstrate that the developed YAG:Ce-PiSG serves as a highly promising color-conversion material for high-performance laser illumination.

The thermodynamic properties of electrolyte solutions elucidate the mechanisms of ionic interactions in solution. This study investigates the thermodynamic properties of the ternary systems containing cesium bromide (CsBr), water, and either 1,2-butanediol (1,2-BDO) or 1,4-butanediol (1,4-BDO) at 298.2 K utilizing potentiometric techniques. CsBr molalities were in the approximate range of 0.01 to 1 mol·kg −1 , and the mass fraction of 1,2-BDO/1,4-BDO in 1,2-BDO/1,4-BDO+H 2 O binary mixed solvents were 0, 0.10, 0.20, and 0.30. The Debye-Hückel model, the Pitzer model, along with the Nernst equation were explored to determine the thermodynamic parameters, which included the mean ionic activity coefficients ( γ ± ), osmotic coefficients ( φ ), excess Gibbs free energy ( G E ), standard Gibbs free energy of transference (Δ G
0 t
), and primary hydration number ( n hydr ). The results reveal that the γ ± of CsBr decreases with increasing the molality of CsBr and with increasing the mass fraction of 1,2-BDO and 1,4-BDO in the binary mixture. A positive value for the Δ G
0 t
signifies that the transfer of CsBr from pure water to the mixed solvent system is thermodynamically unfavorable and thus non-spontaneous. These findings can provide thermodynamic data to support potential industrial processes.

Based on mother liquor rich in lithium, strontium and bromine obtained from the brine of underground oil–gas field in Qaidam Basin after pre-treatment, the isothermal dissolution equilibrium method was used to study the stable solid–liquid equilibria and phase diagrams of the quinary system LiBr − NaBr − KBr − SrBr 2 − H 2 O and its subsystems at 298.15 K. The solubilities of solids in each system were determined, respectively, and the equilibrium solid phases were determined. In order to clearly reflect the regularities and characteristics of phase equilibria of multi-component systems, the corresponding phase diagrams were also plotted and analyzed. The Pitzer model for the quinary system was parameterized by using relevant experimental thermodynamic data. The solubilities of solids in this quinary system and its subsystems were calculated and compared with experimental results. The results not only help to reveal the thermodynamic behavior of relevant bromides in the process of brine concentration, but also provide some theoretical support for the comprehensive utilization of its brine resources.

Fluorescent corrosion indicators can identify underlying corrosion on metallic substrates by detecting metal ions resulting from corrosion processes. Nevertheless, the direct incorporation of fluorescent probes into the coating may result in numerous adverse effects. To maximize effective application, encapsulating these probes in specific carriers is considered to be a viable technique. In this work, the design and application of a new fluorescent probe were reported, which contains o-benzylaminophenol (BC) as fluorophores and nanomesoporous silica (MSP) as carrier. MSP, characterized by an average particle size of 90 nm, was synthesized using a sol-gel process. BC was synthesized, which exhibited yellowish-green fluorescence upon the addition of aluminum nitrate, methanol, and water. A novel intelligent container with the function of early corrosion warning was developed by incorporating BC into the MSP carrier by vacuum impregnation. BC@MSP smart containers were included in the solvent-based polyurethane coatings and applied on 2024-T3 aluminum alloy. The coating is engineered to identify corrosion within 24 h following exposure to 3.5 wt.% NaCl by the formation of a complex by BC reacting with metal ions (Al 3+ ). Electrochemical impedance evidenced that the epoxy coating with 4 wt.% BC@MSP presents high corrosion resistance even after 28 d.

An azithromycin-imprinted electrochemical sensor was developed using hollow nanocages derived from metal-organic frameworks, combined with multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The modification of the molecularly imprinted layer enhanced selective recognition for azithromycin by enabling dual binding modes through covalent (boronate ester bonds) and non-covalent (hydrogen bonding) interactions. The hollow porous structure of the Co 3 O 4 /CNFs (carbon-nitrogen frameworks) nanocages reduced the diffusion distance of electrolytes across the electrode surface, accelerated the redox reaction, enhanced sensing signals, and enhanced sensitivity. Moreover, the combination of Co 3 O 4 /CNFs nanocages and multi-walled carbon nanotubes significantly enhanced the conductivity of the modified electrodes, thus further improving sensitivity. It also provided a larger support area for constructing the imprinted layer, which increased recognition sites. After optimization, the sensor exhibited excellent azithromycin recognition, with a broad linear range (0.2−500 μM) and a low limit of detection (0.12 μM). The sensor showed satisfactory recoveries in real sample analysis (milk = 94.67%−100.99%, urine = 96.89%−107.33%), highlighting its significant potential for monitoring trace levels of azithromycin.
