Characterization of Waste Amidoxime Chelating Resin and Its Reutilization Performance in Adsorption of Pb(II), Cu(II), Cd(II) and Zn(II) Ions

Chunhui Zheng,Chunlin He,Yingjie Yang,Toyohisa Fujita,Guifang Wang,Wenchao Yang

The continuous expansion of the market demand and scale of commercial amidoxime chelating resins has caused large amounts of resin to be discarded around the world. In this study, the waste amidoxime chelating resin was reutilized as an adsorbent for the removal and recovery of Pb(II), Cu(II), Cd(II) and Zn(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The physical morphology and chemical composition of the waste amidoxime chelating resin (WAC-resin) from the factory was characterized by the elemental analyzer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The influence of the initial metal ions concentration, contact time, temperature and the solution pH on the adsorption performance of the metal ions was explored by batch experiments. It was shown that the optimal pH was 4. Kinetic studies revealed that adsorption process corresponded with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the adsorption isotherm was consistent with the Langmuir model. At room temperature, the adsorption capacities of WAC-resin for Pb2+, Cu2+, Zn2+and Cd2+reached 114.6, 93.4, 24.4 and 20.7 mg/g, respectively. Keywords:waste amidoxime chelating resin;characterization;reutilization;heavy metals

Remediation of Cd (II) ions in aqueous and soil phases using novel porous cellulose/chitosan composite spheres loaded with zero-valent iron nanoparticles

Bo Li,Ming Li,Panpan Zhang,Yuanfeng Pan,Zhihong Huang,Huining Xiao

Novel porous cellulose/chitosan composite spheres loaded with nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI/PCSs) were fabricated for the removal of Cd (II) from aqueous solution and the remediation of Cd species in contaminated soil. The green-based nZVI/PCSs exhibited the improved dispersion and antioxidability of nZVI compared to the pristine one. The results from SEM/EDS suggested that the Fe (0) took part in the adsorption of the Cd (II) ions; whereas XPS analysis revealed that Fe (0) and amino groups in nZVI/PCSs played crucial roles in Cd (II) removal via the effects of precipitation or chelation. The results of the experiments in aqueous solution and model fitting showed that the adsorption of Cd (II) induced by nZVI/PCSs was better described by Langmuir isotherm and the maximum adsorption capacity reached up to 110.3 mg/g. The soil remediation tests demonstrated that nZVI/PCSs could significantly enhance cadmium immobilization, enabling the conversion of most exchangeable Cd species to Fe Mn oxides and organic matters in contaminated soil after the remediation. Overall, nZVI/PCSs have great potential as an excellent adsorbent with cost-effectiveness in Cd (II) removal from the aqueous solution and the remediation of Cd species in contaminated soil phases.

Enhanced microalgal biomass and lipid production with simultaneous effective removal of Cd using algae-bacteria-activated carbon consortium added with organic carbon source

Jianke Huang,Bocheng Su,Xingyi Fei,Jiayi Che,Ting Yao,Ruizeng Zhang,Sanjiong Yi

Recently, using microalgae to remediate heavy metal polluted water has been attained a huge attention. However, heavy metals are generally toxic to microalgae and consequently decrease biomass accumulation. To address this issue, the feasibility of adding exogenous glucose, employing algae-bacteria system and algae-bacteria-activated carbon consortium to enhance microalgae growth were evaluated. The result showed that Cd 2+ removal efficiency was negatively correlated with microalgal specific growth rate. The exogenous glucose alleviated the heavy metal toxicity to algal cells and thus increased the microalgae growth rate. Among the different treatments, the algae-bacteria-activated carbon combination had the highest biomass concentration (1.15 g L −1 ) and lipid yield (334.97 mg L −1 ), which were respectively 3.03 times of biomass (0.38 g L −1 ) and 4.92 times of lipid yield (68.08 mg L −1 ) in the single microalgae treatment system. Additionally, this algae-bacteria-activated carbon consortium remained a high Cd 2+ removal efficiency (91.61%). In all, the present study developed an approach that had a great potential in simultaneous heavy metal wastewater treatment and microalgal lipid production.

A novel electrospun β-CD/CS/PVA nanofiber membrane for simultaneous and rapid removal of organic micropollutants and heavy metal ions from water

Jie-Ping Fan,Jun-Jing Luo,Xue-Hong Zhang,Bing Zhen,Chun-Yi Dong,Yan-Chen Li,Jian Shen,Yu-Tong Cheng,Hui-Ping Chen

In this work, a novel electrospun β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)/chitosan (CS)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofiber membrane was prepared to simultaneously and rapidly remove organic and heavy metal micropollutants. The preparation conditions were optimized by multi-objective response surface methodology, and obtained as follows: 100% of the amount of β-CD (relative to PVA), 49.49% of the amount of CS (relative to PVA), 20 cm of the distance between the needle tip and the collector drum, 0.23 mL h −1 of the flow rate of the spinning solution, and 8.72% of the amount of PVA (relative to water). The characterization by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed a well cross-linked β-CD/CS/PVA nanofiber membrane was formed. In the static and dynamic adsorption experiments, the results demonstrated that the β-CD/CS/PVA nanofiber membrane was highly efficient in simultaneous and rapid removal of organic and heavy metal micropollutants in water treatment process.

Rice husk derived double network hydrogel as efficient adsorbent for Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) removal in individual and multicomponent systems

Jianhong Ma,Tong Li,Yutang Liu,Tao Cai,Yuanfeng Wei,Wanyue Dong,Hui Chen

In this study, lignin extracted from rice husk was used to synthesis double network hydrogel adsorbent, named RH-CTS/PAM gel. RH-CTS/PAM gel exhibited macroporous structure and high buried water content, which gave rise to the exceptional adsorption performance. As results, in individual systems, the equilibrium time of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) with initial concentration of 200 mg/L could be reached within 10 min, with the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 374.32, 196.68 and 268.98 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption rate and capacity of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) in multicomponent systems were lower than that of individual systems. However, in a few cases of ternary system, higher adsorption rate and capacity was observed compare to binary systems. Adsorption mechanism indicated that both oxygen-containing and nitrogen-containing functional groups played a dominant role during the adsorption process, and mainly through chemical interaction along with a small amount of physical interaction.

Water-soluble CdSe/CdS and CdSe/Cd x Zn1−x S quantum dots with tunable and narrow luminescent spectra and high photoluminescence efficiency

Zhang Qiang,Cao Yongqiang,Shen Jianxing,Yang Ping

Nearly monodisperse CdSe/CdS and CdSe/Cd x Zn 1− x S core–shell quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized by the epitaxial growth of CdS or Cd x Zn 1– x S shells on pre-synthesized CdSe cores through a facile organic route. The thickness effect of CdS and Cd x Zn 1− x S shells on the properties of resulting core–shell QDs, such as the photoluminescence (PL) efficiency, PL full width at half-maximum (fwhm), and PL decay lifetime, were investigated. The PL efficiency is greatly enhanced from 9 % of CdSe cores to 64 % of CdSe/Cd x Zn 1− x S core–shell QDs. The PL spectra are narrowed after coating (fwhm ~28–32 nm). The alloy Cd x Zn 1− x S shell is especially effective to enhance the PL efficiency, and it leads to a smaller red-shift in PL spectra compared with that of the CdS shell. The water-soluble CdSe/Cd x Zn 1− x S core–shell QDs were obtained by the encapsulation of amphiphilic poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (PSMA)–ethanolamine (EA) polymers, which was initially dispersed in oil phase. It was found that the CdSe/Cd x Zn 1− x S QDs in water still retained a high PL efficiency as well as a small value in fwhm after encapsulating the CdSe/Cd x Zn 1− x S QDs with PSMA–EA polymers, expanding the applications of these core–shell QDs in aqueous environment.

Low toxic and highly luminescent CdSe/Cd x Zn1−x S quantum dots with thin organic SiO2 coating for application in cell imaging

Du Yingying,Yang Ping,Matras-Postolek Katarzyna,Wang Junpeng,Che Quande,Cao Yongqiang,Ma Qian

A silanization process was employed to transfer hydrophobic quantum dots (QDs) prepared via an organic route at high temperature into water phase. The QDs were further coated with a thin organic SiO 2 shell to form QDs@SiO 2 composite nanoparticles by ligand exchange or remaining initial organic ligands on the surface. In this study, QDs with different ligands, either trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) or oleic acid (OA), were employed to investigate the effects of ligands on the reverse micelles in preparing QDs@SiO 2 nanoparticles. In the preparing process, hydrophobic QDs were silanized by partially hydrolyzed tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). For TOPO-capped CdSe QDs, surface TOPO ligands were completely replaced by partially hydrolyzed TEOS. As for OA-capped CdSe/Cd x Zn 1− x S QDs, surface OA ligands were partially replaced. It was found that the ligand exchange drastically reduced the photoluminescence (PL) efficiency of CdSe QDs. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity studies of QDs@SiO 2 have been carried out in detail. The results indicate that CdSe/Cd x Zn 1− x S QDs@SiO 2 composite nanoparticles exhibit lower cytotoxicity compared with CdSe QDs@SiO 2 , because the SiO 2 shell and remained OA ligand layer can effectively prevent the leakage of toxic Cd 2+ ions. Meanwhile, it was found that these CdSe/Cd x Zn 1− x S QDs@SiO 2 nanocomposites could keep excellent PL properties even for 24 h incubating with Siha cells, which indicating that our prepared composite nanoparticles are potentially applicable for cell imaging in biological systems.

Rationally Designed Flame-Retardant ZIF-67@γ-CD-MOFs@APP: An Integrated Hierarchical Nanostructure and Its Application in Polypropylene Towards Fire Resistance Enhancement

Junying Wu,Ruijie Guo,Houting Kang,Yanming Wang,Jingyuan Tian,Jierong Wang,Hong Yan

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have great potential in improving the fire safety of polymer materials. To improve the fire resistance and smoke suppression of polypropylene (PP), a flame-retardant system ZIF-67@γ-CD-MOFs@APP incorporating multiple flame-retardant elements was designed and applied to PP. The coated PP passed UL-94 V-0 level with the LOI up to 36.2% and char residue of 12.47%. The PHRR, PSPR, COP, and CO 2 P of coated PP were reduced by 52.65%, 24.72%, 36.49%, and 52.29%, respectively, compared to neat PP. In addition, the tPHRR, tPSPR, tCOP, and tCO 2 P were prolonged by 405.3%, 345.4%, 427.8%, and 405.3% compared to pure PP, allowing more escape time when facing a real fire. Integrating the hierarchical porous structure provided by ZIF-67 and γ-CD-MOFs, catalytic carbonization of transition metal Co and the nitrogen-containing ligand, ZIF-67@γ-CD-MOFs@APP played a flame-retardant role both in the condensed and gas phase, endowing PP with enhanced flame retardancy and smoke suppression. The “all-in-one” strategy provides helpful insights for constructing fire retardant system with multi-level nanostructure.

A highly charged and porous biochar embedded with hydrated ferric oxide nanoparticles for enhanced removal of Cd(II) and Cu(II) from water

Yan Li,Shunli Wan,Zhenbao Liang,Wenjing Zhou,Ran Chen,Qidi Liu,Yixin Ma

Owing to the limited pore structure and surface charged groups, it is still challenging for biochar (BC) as the host of metallic oxide nanoparticles to achieve the highly efficient treatment of heavy metals in water. To overcome this barrier, a highly porous and charged biochar (LABC) was developed as supporter to load hydrated ferric oxide (HFO), and a new nanocomposite HFO-LABC was acquired for heavy metal decontamination. The increased and enlarged pores from KHCO 3 for LABC activation apparently cut down adsorption equilibrium time of HFO-LABC to Cd(II) and Cu(II) (within 10 min) by reducing pore diffusion resistance of targeted metals. The predicted pore diffusion coefficient D is 2.3 ☓10 –8 and 3.6 ☓10 –8 cm 2 /s for Cd(II) and Cu(II) in HFO-LABC, respectively, about 10 times higher than that in HFO-BC (2.1 ☓10 –9 and 3.7 ☓10 –9 cm 2 /s). The introduced charged groups onto LABC notably enhanced Cd(II) and Cu(II) adsorption on HFO-LABC through promoting the dispersion of the loaded nanoparticles (size < 10 nm) and the potential Donnan membrane effect. Consequently, Fe-normalized adsorption capacities of Cd(II) and Cu(II) on HFO-LABC of 976.23 and 1170.77 mg/g-Fe are much greater than those on HFO-BC (299.50 and 510.92 mg/g-Fe). Moreover, HFO-LABC can achieve advanced treatment for synthetic and real Cd(II) and Cu(II)-polluted wastewater in cyclic batch system, with treatment capacities of 1500, 3500 and 8000, 4500 mL/g-HFO-LABC. In addition, the spent HFO-LABC can achieve complete regeneration using HCl-CaCl 2 binary solution with desorption rate >95 %.

Efficacy, safety and mechanism of HP-β-CD-PEI polymers as absorption enhancers on the intestinal absorption of poorly absorbable drugs in rats

Hailong Zhang,Xiaoyan Huang,Yongjing Zhang,Yang Gao

Context: Oral bioavailability of some hydrophilic therapeutic macromolecules was very poor, thus leading to their limited application in clinic. Objective: To investigate the efficacy, safety and mechanism of HP-β-CD-PEI polymers on the intestinal absorption of some poorly absorbable drugs in rats. Methods: Effects of HP-β-CD-PEI polymers on the intestinal absorptions of drugs were investigated by an in situ closed loop method in rats. The safety of HP-β-CD-PEI polymer was evaluated by measurement of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity and amount of protein released from rat intestinal perfusate. The absorption enhancing mechanisms were explored by the measurement of zeta potential, transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) and in vitro transport of FD4 (a paracellular marker) across rat intestinal membranes, respectively. Results: HP-β-CD-PEI polymers, especially HP-β-CD-PEI1800, demonstrated excellent absorption enhancing effects on drug absorption in a concentration-dependent manner and the enhancing effect was more efficient in the small intestine than that in the large intestine. Five percent (w/v) HP-β-CD-PEI1800 obviously decreased the TEER, accompanied with increase in the intestinal transport of FD4, indicating that absorption enhancing actions of HP-β-CD-PEI polymers were possibly performed by loosening tight junctions of intestinal epithelium cells, thereby increasing drug permeation via a paracellular pathway. A good liner relationship between absorption enhancing effects of HP-β-CD-PEI polymers and their zeta potentials suggested the contribution of positive charge on the surface of these polymers to their absorption enhancing effects. Conclusion: HP-β-CD-PEI polymers might be potential and safe absorption enhancers for improving oral delivery of poorly absorbable macromolecules including peptides and proteins.

Intelligent monitoring of the available lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in soil samples based on half adder and half subtractor molecular logic gates

Junhua Chen,Xu Wang,Yiwen Lv,Manjia Chen,Hui Tong,Chengshuai Liu

The available heavy metals in soil samples can cause the direct toxicity on ecosystems, plants, and human health. Traditional chemical extraction and recombinant bacterial methods for the available heavy metals assay often suffer from inaccuracy and poor specificity. In this work, we construct half adder and half subtractor molecular logic gates with molecular-level biocomputation capabilities for the intelligent sensing of the available lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd). The available Pb and Cd can cleave DNAzyme sequences to release the trigger DNA , which can activate the hairpin probe assembly in the logic system. This multifunctional logic system can not only achieve the intelligent recognition of the available Pb and Cd according to the truth tables, but also can realize the simultaneous quantification with high sensitivity, with the detection limits of 2.8 pM and 25.6 pM, respectively. The logic biosensor is robust and has been applied to determination of the available Pb and Cd in soil samples with good accuracy and reliability. The relative error (Re) between the logic biosensor and the DTPA + ICP-MS method was from −8.1 % to 7.9 %. With the advantages of programmability, scalability, and multicomputing capacity, the molecular logic system can provide a simple, rapid, and smart method for intelligent monitoring of the available Pb and Cd in environmental samples.

Efficient Room-Temperature Phosphorescence via Engineering Heavy-Atom Effect and Band-Edge Arrangement in 0D d10 Metal (M=Zn, Cd) Halides for Anti-Counterfeiting

Guojun Zhou,Rongxiang Hao,Yilin Mao,Nan Zhang,Qiqiong Ren,Jianfang Lv,Xiuling Wang,Xian-Ming Zhang

Advancing room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is pivotal for optoelectronics, yet a key challenge lies in precisely controlling exciton dynamics to boost RTP efficiency. This study presents a strategic approach to enhance RTP in 0D d 10 metal halides by engineering the inorganic units [MBr 4 ] 2– ( M ═Zn, Cd). Using a π-conjugated ligand as organic template, we constructed a pair of isostructural hybrid bromides with 0D “host-guest” structure, namely (PTPP) 2 MBr 4 (PTPP = Pentyltriphenylphosphonium, M ═Zn and Cd). They exhibit the cyan afterglow originating from the RTP emission of PTPP + (T 1 →S 0 ), whose efficiency and lifetime surpass those of the pristine organic chromophore due to enhanced structural rigidity. Importantly, the substitution of Zn 2+ by heavier Cd 2+ triggers a dual role: a stronger heavy-atom effect and a band-edge arrangement transform from Type II to reverse Type I. The phosphorescence quantum yields (Φ P ) increase dramatically from 10.2% ( M ═Zn) to 45.75% ( M ═Cd). The Cd 2+ -system provides more efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) channels (S 1 →T n ) and faster ISC rate, accounting for superior RTP efficiency. Furthermore, they can be employed in multi-level anti-counterfeiting and information encryption. This work elucidates the dual functionality of d 10 metal center in modulating spin-orbit coupling and electronic structure, providing new insights for the rational design of RTP materials.
