In this work, pure and homogeneous Ni incorporated CdS photocatalyst was prepared by vulcanization of ZIF material synthesized from Cd/Ni salt by solvothermal method . The prepared pure CdS photocatalysts by the vulcanization of ZIF material exhibits better catalytic activity due to its larger specific surface area. The introduction of Ni can further improve the hydrogen production activity. The effect of Ni incorporating amount and annealing temperature on the hydrogen production activity of CdS photocatalyst was researched systematically. The photocatalytic activity at 10 % Ni incorporated CdS sample is greatly enhanced after annealing at 700 °C, which is attributed to the effective doping of Ni into the CdS lattice by annealing. The average hydrogen evolution rate is 1644.6 μmol/g/h, which adds up to about 119 times that of normal CdS. The current research provides a simple and effective method for improving the photocatalytic activity of CdS.

Two-dimensional (2D) beta indium sulfide ( β -In 2 S 3 ) shows great potential in photocatalytic hydrogen production due to its broad-spectrum response, relatively negative conduction band edge, high carrier mobility and low toxicity. However, the high charge recombination rate limits the application of In 2 S 3 . Here, we in-situ grew 2D cadmium sulfide (CdS) on the surface of In 2 S 3 doped with copper ions (Cu 2+ ) to construct a heterojunction photocatalyst that suppresses charge recombination. The in-situ grown method and shared sulfur composition were conducive to forming the efficient interface contact between In 2 S 3 and CdS, promoting charge transfer and showing the high spatial charge separation rate, resulting in a hydrogen production rate of 868 µmol g -1 h −1 . The induced Cu 2+ extended the light absorption range and stabilized the photocatalyst . By creating stable 2D/2D heterojunction photocatalysts with high charge separation efficiency, this work opens new possibilities for applying In 2 S 3 materials in photocatalytic hydrogen production.

The exploitation of morphological engineering strategies enables the design of semiconductor-based photocatalysts with a precision that significantly enhances their photocatalytic activity. In this study, a paradigm has been provided that embeds plasmonic nanostructures within the bulk of the semiconductor, which demonstrates an improvement in interfacial charge transfer and separation. It involves a distinct core-double shelled Au@carbon dots@CdS hybrid, exhibiting excellent photocatalytic H 2 generation under the visible light radiation. The interfacial engineering between the plasmonic nucleus and the semiconductor shell has been performed by the incorporation of carbon dots as faster charge channels. The effective driving force for plasmon-enhanced bulk charge separation of semiconductors and the unhindered interfacial charge transmission derived from carbon dots have been demonstrated by the use of steady state surface photovoltage (SPV) and transient state surface photovoltage (TPV) methods, as well as some intrinsic kinetics information of interfacial photoexcited charge carriers transfer processes.

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is a promising route to simultaneously address two critical issues related to the energy and environment. Herein, a direct Z-scheme photocatalytic system, Ti3+ defective TiO2/CdS nanoflowers, was fabricated to enhance the production of C1–C3 products from CO2 reduction. First, nanoflower-like TiO2 (NF-TiO2) is prepared using a TiB2 precursor to build in Ti3+ defects. Then, the NF-TiO2/CdS heterojunctions are constructed via the sulfurization of TiO2/Cd-MOF. Importantly, the optimal heterojunction photocatalyst NF-TiO2/CdS0.6 exhibits a highly promoted CO2 reduction activity not only for CO and CH4 but also for C2–C3 hydrocarbons. The cumulative yields of CO and CH4 are 1007.0 μmol/g and 83.5 μmol/g (2.5 h), respectively, and a yield of 55.3 μmol/g (2.5 h) of C2–C3 hydrocarbons is obtained. This enhanced yield of C1–C3 products is attributed to the synergistic effects of abundant Ti3+ defects that increase adsorption and activation of CO2, the large surface area that provides sufficient active sites, and a direct Z-scheme heterojunction with a good intimate contact interface that effectively separates charge carriers and accumulates electrons with strong reducibility. Moreover, the photoluminescence analysis of hydroxyl radicals was conducted to provide evidence for the direct Z-scheme mechanism. This work provides a facile method for the construction of a TiO2-based direct Z-scheme photocatalytic system for improving photocatalytic performance toward CO2 reduction.

A new hybrid fluorescent nanosensor (Flu@Mea-CdS) for the Cu 2+ detection in aqueous solution was constructed through fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). The Flu@Mea-CdS was fabricated by amide linkage between CdS quantum dots capped with cysteamine (Mea-CdS) and fluorescein. With the formation of FRET process from Mea-CdS quantum dots to fluorescein, the fluorescence intensity of fluorescein at 520 nm was significantly enhanced. In addition, the sensor based on FRET has high selectivity for Cu 2+ ions detection. With the presence of Cu 2+ ions, Cu 2+ ions were transferred to Cu 2 S by the reaction with Flu@Mea-CdS, which caused the inhibition of FRET process and quenched the fluorescence signal of 520 nm. Compared with Mea-CdS quantum dots, the Flu@Mea-CdS sensor has a lower detection limit for Cu 2+ . The linear range is 4–14 μM, and the detection limit is 0.17 μM. The sensor has been successfully applied to the detection of Cu 2+ ions in practical samples, which shows its potential application value in environmental monitoring.

Tetracycline (TC) residues have been noted as an important class of emerging contaminants in the environment, thus fast, straightforward, highly sensitive detection method is becoming an issue that must be addressed. Herein, a novel CDs@ZIF-8 sensing material was fabricated by encapsulating luminescent carbon dots (CDs) into the metal-organic framework (ZIF-8) to achieve highly luminescent porous composites. Furthermore, to avoid the secondary contamination caused by powders, a shapable CDs@ZIF-8/CS film sensor as a portable disposable test strip with dual-function of TC detection and adsorption was designed by crosslinking CDs@ZIF-8 with chitosan (CS). The as-prepared CDs@ZIF-8/CS hybrid film exhibited the high sensitivity and selectivity for TC fluorescence detection and rapid decontaminate capability, as well as high optical transmittance and robust mechanical property, which were essential for the practical sensing application. This paper-based dual-functional luminescent sensor exhibits promising practicability for TC detection and contaminant removal in pharmaceutical analysis, food safety and water treatment.

The design and construction of Ag 2 S heterostructures capable of significantly separating photocarriers is a significant challenge in photocatalysis. In this study, CdS/Ag 2 S heterojunction composite photocatalyst is fabricated through a simple one-step hydrothermal method. The composite structure is characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV-visible diffuse reflection spectroscopy. Under visible light irradiation, the photocatalytic activity of the sample is evaluated by degradation of methyl orange. The photoelectric chemical performance of the CdS nanoparticles modified by Ag 2 S is closely related to the ratio of Cd/Ag cation. The experimental results show that the sample ACS-2 (CdS-Ag 2 S = 1:1) composite has higher charge transfer/separation efficiency and longer carrier life. The degradation efficiency reaches 74.4% within 30 min, and the degradation rate constant is 0.047 min −1 . After four cycles, the degradation efficiency of the catalyst only decreases slightly, indicating that the CdS/Ag 2 S catalyst has good stability and repeatability. Meanwhile, the study of the photocatalytic mechanism shows that •O 1 − is the primary active substance in the catalytic process, and h + and •OH play a secondary role. This work provides a great significance for constructing efficient Ag 2 S-based heterojunction photocatalyst systems.

As an efficient and sustainable technology, photocatalysis driven by visible light has made great contributions to the removal of heavy metals from environment. In this work, a series of Cd 3 (TMT) 2 /CdS heterojunction composite photocatalysts were prepared by self-formation of CdS nanoparticles using an octahedral coordination polymer Cd 3 (C 3 N 3 S 3 ) 2 (denoted as Cd 3 (TMT) 2 ) as a precursor. The photocatalytic performance of Cd 3 (TMT) 2 /CdS heterojunction composites for Cr(VI) has been significantly improved under visible light irradiation owing to effective separation and migration of photoexcited charge carriers. Moreover, Cd 3 (TMT) 2 /CdS composites exhibited remarkable photocatalytic reduction performance of Cr(VI) solution with high concentration. This photocatalyst provides a novel route in the photoreduction of Cr(VI).

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) detection as a potential development strategy for Cu 2+ ion sensor has arisen extensive attention. Herein, CdS/Ti 3 C 2 heterostructure was synthesized by electrostatically driven assembly and hydrothermal method. On the basis of a CdS/Ti 3 C 2 heterostructure, a novel anodic PEC sensing platform was constructed for highly sensitive detection of trace amount of Cu 2+ . Carrier transport at the interface of CdS/Ti 3 C 2 heterostructure was tremendously improved, due to the generation of effective Schottky junctions. Under visible light irradiation, the CdS/Ti 3 C 2 heterostructure-modified PEC platform exhibits great anode photocurrent signal, and the formation of Cu x S reduces the PEC response with the presence of Cu 2+ as a representative analyte. Thus, the linear response of Cu 2+ ranges from 0.1 nM to 10 µM and the limits of detection (LOD, 0.05 nM) are obtained, which is lower than that of WHO’s Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality (30 μM). This idea of component reconstitution provides a new paradigm for the design of advanced PEC sensors. Graphical abstract

Nanomaterial selection is critical for photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing. In this report, a novel cathodic photoelectrochemical (PEC) strategy was proposed for the detection of doxorubicin hydrochloride (Dox) and gentamicin sulfate (CN). The photocathode was synthesized by noncovalently coupling cadmium sulfide (CdS) to the porphyrin-derived metal–organic framework (CdS@PCN-224). This type of assembly created a pleasant interface for the combination of doxorubicin hydrochloride and gentamicin sulfate, resulting in a good CdS@PCN-224 donor–acceptor system. When compared to a single optoelectronic material, its photocurrent is enhanced by unprecedented nine times. This research could pave the way for the realization of PCN-224’s enormous potential in PEC sensing.

In this paper, Ni x Cd y S composite photocatalysts were synthesized by using Ni-doped Cd–Co PBA as the precursor, which retains the advantages of PBA such as porous structure , large specific surface and highly dispersed metal active sites. The photocatalytic hydrogen production performance over Ni x Cd y S is three times higher than that of pure CdS with H 2 yield of 8.45 mmol g −1 h −1 . The catalyst was analyzed by the UV/Vis absorption spectra , photoluminescence spectra, time-resolved photoluminescence spectra, transient photocurrent responses, electrochemical impedance spectra, Mott-Schottky test, etc. A series of characterization results prove that the electron-hole recombination rate, electrochemical resistance and band gap of nickel-doped CdS composites are obviously smaller than CdS, which are important factors to improve the photocatalytic hydrogen production performance. This work may provide some reference value for the fabrication of other functional materials using PBA as precursors.

Constructing highly efficient and cost-effective photocatalyst system has been a big challenge for photocatalysis . Herein, CdS nanosphere ( N -CdS), hollow CdS (H-CdS) and a series of H-CdS@NiCoP core–shell nanospheres have been successfully prepared via a facile hydrothermal method . The activity test showed that H-CdS exhibited higher photocatalytic activity (3.34 mmol g -1 h −1 ) compared with N -CdS (0.99 mmol g -1 h −1 ) under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm), suggesting that hollow structure could effectively improve photocatalytic activity. Moreover, the H-CdS@NiCoP-7 wt% displayed a maximum photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate of 13.47 mmol g -1 h −1 , which was about 4 times and 2.5 times higher than that of pristine H-CdS and H-CdS@Pt-3 wt%, respectively. Furthermore, H-CdS@NiCoP-7 wt% exhibited a good stability during 20 h test. The physicochemical properties were characterized by XRD , SEM , TEM, XPS , UV–vis DRS , PL and photoelectrochemical technique. The results showed that NiCoP addition can construct p-n junction with H-CdS and effectively promote the charge transfer from CdS to NiCoP, which improved the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity. This work revealed that NiCoP could react as an excellent co-catalyst for enhancing H-CdS photocatalytic activity.
