The utilization of visible light for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation offers a sustainable and eco-friendly strategy for the production of ammonia. The present study focuses on the synthesis of a series of rare earth-doped carbon nitride composite ultraviolet-activated Ce-UiO-66 catalysts, denoted as RECN-actMOF, for efficient nitrogen fixation. Rare earth doping modulates the band structure of carbon nitride, facilitating the formation of a type-I heterojunction with Ce-UiO-66 and promoting photocarrier generation at nitrogen fixation sites. Among these, Sm-doped SmCN-actMOF exhibits high visible-light absorption and efficient utilization of photocarriers, resulting in an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 1.58% under 495 nm light irradiation. This study provides a pathway for enhancing the nitrogen fixation efficiency of photocatalysts through the incorporation of rare earth elements, and expanding the potential applications of rare earth materials in the field of photocatalysis.

By encapsulating nanoscale particles of goethite (α-FeO(OH)), hydrous ceric oxide (CeO 2 ·H 2 O, HCO) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in the pores of polystyrene anion exchanger D201, a novel nanocomposite FeO(OH)-HCO-Ag-D201 was prepared for the effective removal of arsenic from water. The isotherm study shows that FeO(OH)-HCO-Ag-D201 has excellent adsorption performance for As(III) and As(V), with an increased adsorption capacity of As(III) to 40.12 mg/g compared to that of 22.03 mg/g by the composite adsorbent without AgNPs (FeO(OH)-HCO-D201). The adsorption kinetics data showed that the sorption rate of FeO(OH)-HCO-Ag-D201 for As(III) is less than that for As(V), and the adsorption of As(III) and As(V) were consistent with the pseudo-second-order model and the pseudo-first-order model, respectively. Neutral or basic conditions are favored for the adsorption of As(III/V) by FeO(OH)-HCO-Ag-D201. Compared with nitrate/chloride/bicarbonate, sulfate/silicate/phosphate showed more remarkable inhibition of arsenic removal by FeO(OH)-HCO-Ag-D201, whereas natural organic matter showed no interference to the arsenic removal. The As(V) adsorption involved different interactions such as electrostatic attraction and surface complexation, while the adsorption of As(III) involved the part oxidization of As(III) to As(V) and the simultaneous adsorption of As(III) and As(V). In addition to the Ce(IV) in CeO 2 ·H 2 O acted as an oxidant, the synergistic effect of α-FeO(OH) and AgNPs also contributed to the oxidization of As(III) to As(V). Moreover, the reusable property suggested that this FeO(OH)-HCO-Ag-D201 nanocomposite has great potential for arsenic-contaminated water purification.

A series of highly ordered microporous Ce-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized as the precursors for catalyst construction. The corresponding Ru catalysts were prepared by Ru impregnation on the derived CeO 2 by pyrolysis of Ce-MOF, and investigated for the CH 4 synthesis via CO 2 hydrogenation. Among the catalysts, Ru catalyst supported on the CeO 2 -B derived from Ce-BDC exhibited a highly competitive efficiency for CO 2 methanation, giving a CH 4 selectivity of 100% with a CO 2 conversion of 62% at 275 °C and 0.1 MPa, and the CH 4 productivity reached 0.49 mol/(mol Ru ·h). Characterization results revealed that more oxygen vacancies and corresponding surface oxygen species formed on the surface of CeO 2 -B derived from Ce-BDC caused to the stronger interaction between Ru and CeO 2 -B, which promoted the CO 2 adsorption and hydrogenation capacity of the catalyst, resulting in its better catalytic property. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) studies further revealed that the route of HCOO* into CH 4 is a more competitive way of CO 2 hydrogenation to CH 4 .

Enhancing catalytic performance through precise control of active site interactions still poses significant challenges. Diverging from conventional static methods, this study pioneers an innovative current-assisted approach to achieve precise, in situ dynamic tuning of electron transfer specifically within Pd-Ce diatomic sites. The groundbreaking current-assisted Pd 1 -Ce 1 /ATO catalyst achieves unprecedentedly low-temperature methane combustion performance, with a remarkable T 50 of 181 °C and a record-high turnover frequency (TOF 260 °C ) of 4.25 × 10 −2 s −1 . The current-induced augmentation of electron transfer from Ce to Pd markedly elevates the electron density around Pd centers , orchestrating dynamic modulation to synergistically enhance catalysis. This modulation amplifies the electron backdonation from electron-rich Pd to the methane C─H bond, facilitating efficient C─H bond scission, while promoting lattice oxygen mobility near Pd 1 -Ce 1 sites by tuning orbital energy matching, thus significantly amplifying the catalyst's oxidation capacity. The synergistic interplay of these electronically tuned factors promotes the formation of a four-center transition state (H 3 C δ − -Pd-O-H δ + ), effectively weakening the C─H bond and dramatically accelerating methane catalytic oxidation. This work not only achieves ultra-low-temperature catalytic activity with minimal noble metal loading but also establishes a paradigm shift in the rational design of advanced combustion catalysts, enabling on-demand modulation of catalytic activity through real-time regulation of inter-site interactions .

In this paper, poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) (PSS) hydrogel was synthesized following a one-step free-radical polymerization with N, N -methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBA) as a cross-linker. La(III) and Ce(III) were effectively removed from acidic aqueous solutions by using PSS hydrogel. FTIR, TGA, XRD, SEM, zeta potential analysis, and XPS were used to characterize the morphology and microstructure of PSS hydrogel. By varying pH, adsorbent dose, contact time, initial La(III) and Ce(III) ions concentrations, and interfering ions, the adsorption behavior of La(III) and Ce(III) ions on PSS hydrogel was studied. According to the experimental data, PSS hydrogel exhibited adsorption capacities above 200 mg·g −1 for La(III) and 180 mg·g −1 for Ce(III) over a wide pH range. Furthermore, adsorption data was simulated using pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and intra-particle diffusion kinetic equations. For the description of adsorption equilibrium, Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isothermal models were used. According to the results, the Langmuir isotherm equation provided the best fit. Based on the Langmuir isotherm equation, the maximum absorption capacities of La(III) and Ce(III) by PSS hydrogel was 241.0 and 223.7 mg·g −1 , respectively. According to FTIR and XPS analysis, sulfonic acid groups were involved in the adsorption of La(III) and Ce(III) ions. And ion exchange and complexation were the main mechanisms involved. Finally, reusability tests reveal that the PSS hydrogel can be reused 13 times without losing effectiveness.

The consistent rise in atmospheric CO 2 concentrations demands the development of efficient and stable adsorbents for carbon capture technologies. Herein, we report a novel cerium-incorporated hierarchical mesoporous silica functionalized with Tetraethylenepentamine (Ce-HMS@TEPA), characterized and tested under simulated flue gas conditions (10 vol% CO 2 ) to investigate the influence of Ce incorporation and TEPA functionalization on CO 2 adsorption. Strategic Ce incorporation forms Si-O-Ce bonds that boost Lewis acidity, reinforce structural stability, and prevent pore collapse, while facilitating uniform TEPA dispersion. The optimal Ce 0.1 -HMS@TEPA (55.8 %) achieved 3.82 mmol/g CO 2 capacity at an 80 °C/0.15 bar pressure under dry conditions, which was further increased to 4.61 mmol/g under humid conditions. Comprehensive characterization (XRD, BET, TGA) confirmed the preserved pore structure and thermal stability, while the TPD analysis identified distinct CO 2 binding mechanisms. Crucially, Ce-HMS@TEPA retained 93.5 % capacity over 40 cycles (120 °C regeneration), and rapid adsorption kinetics (Avrami model: R 2 > 0.99) outperforming its Ce-free (HMS@TEPA) counterpart. This synergistic interaction of Ce incorporation and TEPA functionalization ensures high CO 2 affinity, rapid adsorption kinetics, and remarkable performance, establishing Ce-HMS@TEPA as a next-generation adsorbent in advancing sustainable carbon capture technologies.

In this study, a series of (1- x )Sr 0.5 Zr 2 (PO 4 ) 3 - x (Ce 1-2 y Nd y Sm y )PO 4 (abbreviated as SrZP-(Ce, Nd, Sm)PO 4 , x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8, 1; y = 0, 1/12, 2/12, 3/12, 4/12, 5/12, 6/12) dual-phase ceramic waste forms were fabricated through a one-step microwave sintering technique. The phase evolution, micromorphology, and densification behavior of these ceramics were systematically investigated using XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM-EDS, and density measurement. The results confirmed that the dual-phase ceramics exclusively consisted of SrZP and (Ce, Nd, Sm)PO 4 phases, which coexisted stably and independently, enabling simultaneously effective immobilization of simulated fission products (Sr 2+ ) and actinides radionuclides (Ce 3+ , Nd 3+ , and Sm 3+ ). The ceramics exhibited a homogeneous distribution of both phases, a compact micromorphology, and relative densities achieving a maximum of 98.9%. It was demonstrated that alterations in the phase content ( x value) induced only negligible variations in the lattice parameters of both crystalline phases, indicating minimal structural perturbations. Rietveld refinement analysis revealed a gradual reduction in the lattice parameters of the (Ce, Nd, Sm)PO 4 phase with increasing y value, consistent with the anticipated immobilization of the simulated actinide radionuclides. In addition, by integrating XRD and Raman analyses, the temperature-induced phase evolution of the representative sample SrZP-Ce 1/3 Nd 1/3 Sm 1/3 PO 4 was comprehensively characterized. The results indicated that the Ce 1/3 Nd 1/3 Sm 1/3 PO 4 phase preferentially formed over the SrZP phase during the dual-phase ceramic preparation. Furthermore, the Kissinger model based on TG-DSC results at various heating rates ( β T = 10, 15, 20, and 25 K/min) provided additional thermodynamic evidence, in which the Ce 1/3 Nd 1/3 Sm 1/3 PO 4 phase possessed a lower apparent activation energy (353.35 kJ/mol) than the SrZP phase (501.33 kJ/mol). Besides, the SrZP-Ce 1/3 Nd 1/3 Sm 1/3 PO 4 dual-phase ceramic waste form demonstrated high chemical stability, with normalized leaching rates of all elements remaining relatively low ( LR Sr ∼ 10 −4 g·m −2 ·d −1 , LR Ce ∼ 10 −7 g·m −2 ·d −1 , LR Nd ∼ 10 −7 g·m −2 ·d −1 , and LR Sm ∼ 10 −6 g·m −2 ·d −1 ).

Both improving the activity and reducing SO3 emissions during selective catalytic reduction of NOx by the NH3 (NH3–SCR) process over commercial V–Ti-based catalysts remain a challenge. Herein, Ce and P cooperatively modified the VMo/Ti catalyst to address this challenge. Within the temperature range of 250–350 °C, the optimal VMoCeP/Ti catalyst achieved a NO conversion of more than 95% and maintained a SO2 oxidation ratio below 1.0%. The enhanced SCR activity of the modified catalyst could be attributed to the improvement in surface acidity and redox capacity by the addition of Ce and P, which would promote NH3 adsorption and activation. Meanwhile, Ce and P coaddition could regulate the surface structure of vanadyl species from predominantly polymeric to a more dimeric form, which could also promote the SCR reaction. More importantly, except for the suppressed sulfation of vanadium species, both a lower proportion of polymeric vanadyl species and the strong interactions among V–Ce–P species could raise the energy barrier of the decomposition of sulfated vanadium species into SO3, thereby inhibiting SO2 oxidation. This work provided novel insights into developing efficient SCR catalysts with low SO2 oxidation ratios for both the academic and industrial fields.

Heavy oil in-situ catalytic technology faces challenges like complex reservoirs, harsh environments, and high viscosity. Developing efficient in-situ catalysts is a key research focus. This study synthesized a Fe/Ce bimetallic organic framework (Fe/Ce-MOF) that addresses critical issues in heavy oil recovery. Under mild conditions at 140℃ with 0.5 wt% catalyst and 2 wt% hydrogen donor for 24 h, Fe/Ce-MOF achieved a 90.15 % reduction in viscosity and a 16.51 % decrease in asphaltene content. The characterization analysis and simulation results collectively reveal that the bimetallic MOF has a synergistic effect. On the one hand, the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycle promotes the cracking of large molecules into smaller ones. On the other hand, the Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ redox cycle facilitates the formation of oxygen vacancies (O v ). Under the combined effect of the dynamic redox cycles of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ , the electron transfer efficiency of the catalyst is significantly enhanced, increasing the rate of heavy oil pyrolysis and hydrogenation. The coexistence of Fe and Ce modifies the charge distribution in heavy oil MOF, enhancing Lewis acidity and promoting interaction with heteroatoms. Additionally, the coexistence of mesoporous and macropores in the bimetallic framework not only facilitated mass transfer and fully utilized the catalytic activity of active sites but also effectively resolves the issue of traditional microporous MOFs are prone to being blocked by larger asphaltene molecules, thereby improving their operational stability. This study proposes a novel strategy for the design and development of in-situ catalytic viscosity reduction catalysts for heavy oil, highlighting the high efficiency, excellent stability, and environmental compatibility of bimetallic MOF in low-temperature catalytic pyrolysis, and demonstrating their significant potential for practical applications.

SrTiO 3 is a quantum paraelectric with cubic symmetry that resists long-range ferroelectricity, but targeted substitution and defect ordering can unlock polar states. Here, we report novel ferroelectricity and high microwave permittivity in a novel Sr (1-1.5 x ) Ce x TiO 3 (SCTO@ x for x = 0.5) (SCTO) solid solution. XRD and Rietveld refinement reveal stabilization of an orthorhombic Pmmm phase, supported by TEM superlattice reflections linked to TiO 6 tilts and antiparallel A-site displacements, while energy landscape analysis confirms this orthorhombic configuration as the strain-relieved ground state. Raman spectra show defect-activated E g and A 1g modes from oxygen-vacancy ordering, and XPS identifies a Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ ↔ Ti 3+ /Ti 4+ redox equilibrium with abundant vacancies. SEM/AFM reveal dense twin-striped grains that grow in size coarsen with sintering, reducing disorder. Dielectric spectra show a low-temperature relaxor response and a high-temperature transition: at 1270 °C both are diffuse and frequency-dependent, whereas at 1300 °C the high-temperature anomaly sharpens into a frequency-independent displacive ferroelectric transition (T C ∼ 449 °C, T CW ∼486 °C), supported by slim P–E loops, higher remanence, and TEM-confirmed domains. The coexistence of relaxor fluctuations with long-range ferroelectric order highlights a crossover from defect-induced short-range polarization to domain-driven coherence, which directly enhances microwave permittivity (ε r ∼82, Q × f∼12800 GHz, and τ f ∼ 205 ppm/°C) by combining soft-mode contributions with reduced extrinsic losses. These findings establish that reduction-controlled defect ordering stabilizes orthorhombic ferroelectricity absent in pristine SrTiO 3 , providing a clear design pathway for functional dielectrics through defect-engineered lattice symmetry.

In present work, Ce 3 + -doped Y 3 Al 5 O 12 (YAG: Ce) transparent ceramics were fabricated via spark plasma sintering (SPS) using Si 3 N 4 as a multifunctional sintering additive. The effects of Si 3 N 4 on the microstructure, densification behavior, and luminescent properties were systematically investigated. It is demonstrated that Si 3 N 4 could be effectively incorporated into the YAG lattice through a charge-balanced substitution mechanism in which Si 4+ -N 3- pairs replace Al 3+ -O 2- , resulting in a significant redshift of the Ce 3+ emission from 545 nm to 582 nm due to enhanced crystal field splitting and nephelauxetic effects. Furthermore, the substitution process also yields in-situ formation of SiO 2 , which promotes densification via liquid-phase sintering, achieves a relative density exceeding 99.5 %, and partially mitigates carbon contamination. When applied in phosphor-converted white LEDs, the Si 3 N 4 -doped YAG: Ce ceramics enabled a substantial reduction in correlated color temperature (CCT) from 4903 K to 3196 K, demonstrating their potential as efficient warm-white light converters without requiring additional red phosphors.

Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is a pivotal technology for propylene production. Supported Pt catalysts for PDH are often subjected to nanoparticle agglomeration and coke deposition, thus limiting their stability and efficiency. Herein, we constructed a high-performance Pt-Ce catalyst consisting of CeO x with redox properties and active Pt species with the regulated electronic properties. Through the controllable impregnation, the unique structure of adjacent Pt-CeO x sites were elaborately supported on the Mn-modified Silicalite-1 (Mn-S-1). Characterization results reveal that the generated Ce 3+ /V O species contribute to the formation of electron-deficient Pt 0 -V O -Ce 3+ active sites via hydrogen spillover and electron transfer.
