KCl–LiCl molten salt synthesis of LaOCl/CeO2-g-C3N4 with excellent photocatalytic-adsorbed removal performance for organic dye pollutant

Zhiyao Chu,Junqi Li,Yuan-Pei Lan,Chaoyi Chen,Jian Yang,Deyang Ning,Xuewen Xia,Xisong Mao

A ternary photocatalyst of LaOCl/CeO 2 -g-C 3 N 4 was designed and firstly synthesized by a facile KCl–LiCl molten salt method. The 60 %LaOCl/40 %CeO 2 -g-C 3 N 4 with a 6: 4 weight ratio of LaOCl to CeO 2 has an optimal degradation ratio (nearly 100%) for methylene blue (MB) with an impressive cyclic stability. Both of adsorption and photodegradation contribute to the high MB removal ratio, and kinetic study results show that the rate constant of photocatalytic degradation route is 0.0174 min −1 , which is less than that of adsorption process (2.4406 min −1 ). The excellent adsorption performance of 60 %LaOCl/40 %CeO 2 -g-C 3 N 4 is attributed to its negative zeta potential (−35.40 mV) and larger average pore size. The photochemical characterizations suggest that the 60 %LaOCl/40 %CeO 2 -g-C 3 N 4 form a dual Z-scheme heterojunction , which enhances its separation efficiency of photogenerated e - / h + with an outstanding redox ability, and further promotes the photocatalytic activity.

Elucidating the Characteristics of Palladium-Anchored CeO2-Modified Hexagonal Nanosheet Co3O4 Catalysts for the Complete Oxidation of Volatile Organic Compounds

Xunxun Li,Yaru Wang,Dongyun Chen,Jun Xiao,Najun Li,Qingfeng Xu,Hua Li,Jinghui He,Jianmei Lu

Oxygen vacancies have been verified to be an important factor in the catalytic oxidation of VOCs. Herein, we report that surface-modified Co/Ce hexagonal nanosheets have excellent catalytic activity, stability, and water resistance. The introduction of cerium increases the oxygen storage capacity of the catalyst. In this work, the best catalyst (1.00 wt % Pd Co/Ce = 4/1) showed the highest catalytic activity for VOC oxidation (T90(toluene) = 160 °C, T90(benzene) = 156 °C). Combining XPS and O2-TPD data, it has been demonstrated that the introduction of cerium increases the adsorbed oxygen concentration of the catalyst. The oxidation of toluene and benzene over the 1.00 wt % Pd Co/Ce = 4/1 catalyst obeys the Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L–H) mechanism.

Modulate the metal support interactions to optimize the surface-interface features of Pt/CeO2 catalysts for enhancing the toluene oxidation

Jie Fan,Yuhang Sun,Mingli Fu,Jiaqi Li,Daiqi Ye

Metal support interactions modulation is one of the effective strategies to enhance the catalytic performance. Herein, we reported that modulating metal support interactions by switching the strength (CO, H 2 , NH 3 ) and temperature (200, 300, 400 °C) of reducing gases is a facile way to improve the catalytic performance of Pt/CeO 2 for toluene oxidation . The distinct reduction treatments will stepwise enhance the reducibility, ratio of Pt 0 and oxygen vacancy concentration, which dominated the activity. The metal support interactions modulation can significantly affect toluene deep oxidation (from benzoate to formate or monodentate carbonate) via enhancing the mobility of surface/lattice oxygen and activation ability towards O 2 molecules, since the main activation sites for O 2 molecules expand from Pt 0 sites to oxygen vacancies and Pt 0 sites with temperature increasing.

Facile C–C Coupling of Aqueous Ethanol to High-Carbon Alcohols over Hierarchical Ni@C-CeO2 Catalysts: Synergistic Effects of Confined Ni Nanoparticles and Oxygen Vacancy

Jiaxing Hou,Guohao Zou,Xinrui Liu,Mingge Li,Pengyu Yang,Xiaobin Zhang,Yan Chen,Qian Zhang,Xiaoping Wu,Tiejun Wang

The one-step hydrothermal reconstruction of bioethanol into higher alcohols represents a pivotal advancement in green chemistry, addressing both environmental sustainability and energy regeneration. Herein, a rational design of Ni@C-CeO2 catalysts via a sol–gel method for efficient aqueous-phase ethanol C–C coupling was reported. Systematic investigation of Ni loading and precursor carbonization temperature revealed their critical roles in modulating catalyst microstructure and performance. The optimized Ni-2@C-CeO2-500 catalyst demonstrated exceptional activity under 190 °C and 12 h, achieving ethanol conversion of 72.0% and C4+ alcohol yield of 55.6%. Advanced characterization techniques unveiled structure-performance relationships: (1) controlled Ni loading ensured optimal nanoparticle dispersion, while excessive loading induced aggregation; (2) carbonization at 500 °C balanced carbon matrix architecture and CeO2 reducibility. XPS analysis revealed that oxygen vacancy concentration critically modulates strong metal–support interactions through Ce3+-induced charge redistribution, facilitating interfacial electron transfer during reaction. Furthermore, the Ni-2@C-CeO2-500 catalyst demonstrated excellent stability with sustained activity retention over five consecutive cycles. This work establishes a renewable and technologically viable alternative to conventional petroleum-derived chemicals widely utilized in the chemical industry, demonstrating significant potential for applications in green and sustainable chemistry.

Heterogeneous Ni and MoOx co-loaded CeO2 catalyst for the hydrogenation of fatty acids to fatty alcohols under mild reaction conditions

Xincheng Cao,Feng Long,Qiaolong Zhai,Jiaping Zhao,Junming Xu,Jianchun Jiang

To develop an efficient Ni-based catalyst for converting renewable fatty acids into high value-added fatty alcohols under mild reaction conditions, the scope of metal oxide modified nickel catalysts was scrutinized. The results show that MoO x modified Ni/CeO 2 catalyst exhibits the excellent catalytic performance in the conversion of fatty acids to form corresponding alcohols at mild reaction conditions (235 °C, 3.0 MPa H 2 ). Using stearic acid as a model substrate, Ni-MoO x /CeO 2 catalyst shows the 98.0% conversion and 96.2% selectivity to stearyl alcohol, which is significantly higher than that of Ni/CeO 2 catalyst and of a physical mixture of both Ni/CeO 2 and MoO x /CeO 2 . Detailed characterization (XRD, Raman, XPS, in situ CO-FTIR, HRTEM, and EPR) indicates that NiMoO 4 is the mainly active phase in the pre-reduced bimetallic catalysts. After reduction at 500 °C in a H 2 flow, the surface of Ni metal is decorated by the MoO x species, the phenomenon is similar to the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) previously observed on reducible oxides. The presence of MoO x species in the bimetallic Ni-MoO x /CeO 2 catalyst not only improves the dispersion of metallic Ni, but also promotes the charge transfer from Ni to Mo. The electronic interaction at the interface of Ni and MoO x provides synergistic catalysis sites of electron-deficient Ni and MoO x species, which is primarily responsible for the excellent catalytic performance of the bimetallic Ni-MoO x catalyst. Additionally, the introduction of Mo species provides much oxygen vacancy sites for the adsorption of fatty acids, which results in high activity for the conversion of fatty acids. The insights into the synergistic catalysis between Ni and MoO x will provide new possibilities in the design of efficient Ni-based catalysts for selective hydrogenation of other biomass-derived compounds containing carboxylic group.

Sensitivity of phosphorus introduction stage to the catalytic activity of CeO2/TiO2 catalysts for selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3

Shibo Yu,Yiqing Zeng,Mengna Zhan,Shule Zhang,Zhaoxiang Zhong

The influence of phosphorus (P) on ammonia selective catalytic reduction (NH 3 -SCR) catalysts has been the subject of considerable scrutiny. Nevertheless, the precise mechanism of its influence remains a matter of contention. Furthermore, the impact of introducing P at varying stages during catalyst preparation process and its different sites within the catalyst structure on performance is frequently disregarded, significantly hindering practical guidance for designing effective modified catalysts. In this study, a series of P-modified CeO 2 /TiO 2 catalysts were synthesized by introducing P at different preparation stages, and various of characterization and comparison experiments were conducted to elucidate the effect of introducing P at different stages on NH 3 -SCR performance of NO x . Results show that introducing P before loading CeO 2 boosts catalyst activity, whereas delaying the introduction of P results in decreased activity and a progressive decline in catalyst performance as the sequence of P introduction is postponed. P introduced earlier tends to be distributed on the surface of the TiO 2 support, which contributes to the dispersion and anchoring of Ce species. In contrast, when the introduction of P was delayed, it tended to be distributed on the surface of the active species, which led to pore plugging and active sites being covered. Secondly, the variation in loading sites resulting from alterations in the stage of P introduction significantly affected on the chemical environment of Ce species, leading to notable differences in the redox capacity of the catalysts. This is the primary reason for the considerable discrepancy in the SCR performance of the catalysts. This study revealed the sensitivity of the stage of P introduction to CeO 2 /TiO 2 catalysts, providing new insights for designing modified CeO 2 /TiO 2 catalysts.

CeO2 as an “electron pump” to boost the performance of Co4N in electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution and biomass oxidation valorization

Peiyun Zhou,Guangtong Hai,Gongchi Zhao,Rushuo Li,Xiubing Huang,Yunfeng Lu,Ge Wang

Developing multifunctional electrocatalysts with excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation reaction (HMFOR) activities will contribute to "carbon neutrality". Here, CeO 2 is introduced into the Co 4 N system as an "electron pump" to attract electrons to transfer from Co 4 N to CeO 2 . The interface electronic structure optimization enables Co 4 N@CeO 2 to exhibit excellent HER, OER, and HMFOR performance. Specifically, to deliver 10 mA cm −2 current density, (1) it only requires low overpotentials of 49 and 263 mV for HER and OER in 1.0 M KOH, respectively; (2) it merely needs an ultra-low potential of 1.22 V RHE for HMFOR in 1.0 M KOH + 300 mM HMF, which is 273 mV lower than the required potential in 1.0 M KOH. Theoretical calculation results show that the introduction of CeO 2 effectively reduces the barriers for potential-determining steps of HER and OER, and optimizes OH - adsorption to promote the HMFOR process.

A 3-dimensional C/CeO2 hollow nanostructure framework as a peroxidase mimetic, and its application to the colorimetric determination of hydrogen peroxide

Wang Nan,Duan Jizhou,Shi Weijie,Zhai Xiaofan,Guan Fang,Yang Lihui,Hou Baorong

Various 3-dimensional C/CeO 2 hollow nanostructure frameworks (3D C/CeO 2 HNFs) were synthesized by using a polymer blowing process that is accelerated by adding a certain amount of cerium nitrate. Polyvinylpyrrolidone was used as the polymer. The resulting HNFs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The HNFs possess a large specific surface area, and the CeO 2 nanocrystals consist of a single phase. The HNFs display intrinsic peroxidase-like activity and can catalyze the oxidation of the peroxidase substrate 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine in the presence of H 2 O 2 to produce a blue product. The method was applied to the quantification of H 2 O 2 with a 5.2 nM detection limit. The analytical range is from 10 nM to 1 μM. Schematic of the preparation of a 3-dimensional C/CeO 2 hollow nanostructure framework by a polyvinylpyrrolidone-blowing process accelerated by Ce(NO 3 ) 3 . They were applied to H 2 O 2 detection by catalyzing the oxidation of peroxidase substrate 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to the oxidized 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (oxTMB) to produce blue-color reaction.

Chlorine-Resistant Hollow Nanosphere-Like VOx/CeO2 Catalysts for Highly Selective and Stable Destruction of 1,2-Dichloroethane: Byproduct Inhibition and Reaction Mechanism

Yu Huang,Shiyue Fang,Mingjiao Tian,Zeyu Jiang,Yani Wu,Chi He

Developing economical and robust catalysts for the highly selective and stable destruction of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) is a great challenge. Here, hollow nanosphere-like VOx/CeO2catalysts with different V/Ce molar ratios were fabricated and adopted for the destruction of1,2–dichloroethane (1,2–DCE). The V0.05Ce catalyst possessed superior catalytic activity, reaction selectivity, and chlorine resistance owing to a large number of oxygen vacancies, excellent low-temperature redox ability, and chemically adsorbed oxygen (O−and O2−) species mobility. Typical chlorinated byproducts (CHCl3, CCl4, C2HCl3,and C2H3Cl3) derived from the cleavage of C–Cl and C–C bonds of 1,2–DCE were detected, which could be effectively inhibited by the abundant acid sites and the strong interactions of VOxspecies with CeO2. The presence of water vapor benefited the activation and deep destruction of 1,2–DCE over V0.05Ce owing to the efficient removal of Cl species from the catalyst surface. Keywords:catalytic destruction;1,2–dichloroethane;VOx/CeO2;chlorinated byproduct inhibition;reaction mechanism

Synthesis of 1,3-Diols from Isobutene and HCHO via Prins Condensation-Hydrolysis Using CeO2 Catalysts: Effects of Crystal Plane and Oxygen Vacancy

Zhixin Zhang,Yehong Wang,Jianmin Lu,Min Wang,Jian Zhang,Xuebin Liu,Feng Wang

We herein report the synthesis of 3-methyl-1,3-butanediol from isobutene and HCHO in water via a Prins condensation-hydrolysis reaction over CeO2, which is a water-tolerant Lewis acid catalyst. The CeO2exhibits significant catalytic activity for the reaction, giving 95% HCHO conversion and 84% 3-methyl-1,3-butanediol selectivity at 150 °C for 4 h. The crystal planes of CeO2have a significant effect on the catalytic activity for the Prins reaction. The (110) plane shows the highest catalytic activity among the crystal planes investigated (the (100), (110), and (111) planes), due to its higher concentration of Lewis acid sites, which is in line with the concentration of oxygen vacancies. Detailed characterizations, including NH3-TPD, pyridine-adsorbed FT-IR spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy, revealed that the concentration of Lewis acid sites is proportional to the concentration of oxygen vacancies. This study indicates that the Lewis acidity induced by oxygen vacancy can be modulated by selective synthesis of CeO2with different morphologies, and that the Lewis acidity and oxygen vacancy play an important role in Prins condensation and hydrolysis reaction.Keywords:CeO2;crystal plane effect;Prins condensation;hydrolysis;oxygen vacancy;Lewis acidity

Construction of Cu2+-doped CeO2 nanocrystals hierarchical hollow structure and its enhanced photocatalytic performance

Xue Manling,Liu Xingbin,Wu Hao,Yu Bo,Meng Fanming

Cu 2+ -doped CeO 2 @mSiO 2 (CDC@mSiO 2 ) samples with hollow structure were prepared by calcining Cu 2+ -doped cerium-based metal–organic framework (UiO-66 nanocrystals) precursor coated with mesoporous silica (mSiO 2 ). BET analysis shows that Cu 2+ -doped CeO 2 @mSiO 2 has a mesoporous structure and a large specific surface area (397.7 m 2 /g), which can provide more active sites for photocatalytic reactions. Ultraviolet absorption spectrum and PL spectrum show that the introduction of Cu 2+ makes the absorption edge of the sample red-shift and accelerate the electron–hole separation efficiency. Cu 2+ doping makes CeO 2 produce more oxygen vacancies, which promotes photocatalysis. The Cu 2+ -doped CeO 2 @mSiO 2 sample has the best photodegradation efficiency. Under simulated sunlight, the degradation rate of methyl orange within 2 h is 92.6%, and the photocatalytic rate constant is 0.0221/min. After 4 cycles of experiments, it still has excellent photocatalytic activity. Based on the characterization analysis and experimental results, the degradation mechanism of methyl orange is proposed.

Ca-Poisoning Effect on V2O5-WO3/TiO2 and V2O5-WO3-CeO2/TiO2 Catalysts with Different Vanadium Loading

Yangyang Guo,Xiaofei Xu,Hong Gao,Yang Zheng,Lei Luo,Tingyu Zhu

Ca poisoning behavior is inevitable for high-calcium content flue gas, so V2O5-WO3/TiO2(VWT) and V2O5-WO3-CeO2/TiO2(VWCeT) catalysts with different vanadium content have been prepared and the Ca-doped catalysts are compared in this manuscript. The result shows Ce addition can both promote the NO conversion and the alkali resistance. Lower Ca addition for 0.1VWCeT catalyst promotes its oxidability and Ce modification is more suitable for low vanadium catalysts. The total acidity and the reducibility of catalysts decline after Ca doping, and the reducibility of the active species on catalysts has been strengthened by Ce addition. CeO2based catalysts with lower Ca loading struggle to resist sulfur poisoning, while higher Ca loading favors SO2adsorption and also physically reduces the cerium acidification process. In the presence of SO2, additional Brønsted acid sites are formed in Ca rich catalyst. The dynamic NH3adsorption has been investigated, shows that Ca doping content on catalyst is critical for SCR reaction, and the catalyst is more susceptible to SO2initially in alkali flue gas during the actual application, but the sulfur resistance may increase with the alkali-poisoning effect aggravated by Ca doping.Keywords:Ca-poisoning;SCR reaction;NO reduction;V2O5-WO3/TiO2and V2O5-WO3-CeO2/TiO2catalysts;SO2and water;NO removal efficiency
