In this article, a CRET-based chemiluminescent sensor was developed for ascorbic acid detection. Au/Pt@Cu2O/CuO NPs with peroxidase activity were prepared to catalyse the decomposition of H2O2 to produce free radicals, which led to the enhancement of the chemiluminescence (CL) signal, and the CRET between luminol and MnO2 NSs was able to take place and the CL signal was reduced; the presence of ascorbic acid would reduce MnO2 NSs, which was able to weaken the energy transfer between luminol and MnO2 NSs and restored the CL signal. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the detection range of ascorbic acid was 1–1000 μM, and the LOD was 0.35 μM. The method is sensitive and has a wide linear range, and is expected to be applied to the detection of ascorbic acid in more complex environments.

Titanium, often referred as the “metal of the ocean”, shows substantial promise for marine engineering applications. However, its widespread use remains constrained by the persistent challenge of biofouling in the marine environment, underscoring the critical need for effective anti-fouling strategies tailored for titanium. This paper develops a novel anti-fouling titanium surface, prepared through a straightforward two-step electrochemical method that completely fills the anti-fouling agent Cu 2 O into TiO 2 nanotube arrays on the titanium surface. The method achieves the complete filling of Cu 2 O into TiO 2 nanotube arrays by selectively enhancing the bottom conductivity of TiO 2 nanotube arrays and the optimized pulse deposition parameters. Anti-fouling performance evaluations demonstrate that this novel anti-fouling titanium surface exhibits excellent anti-adhesion properties against marine fouling organisms, including bacteria, diatoms, and barnacles. Furthermore, it maintains significant anti-fouling efficacy for nearly one month in the marine environment. The design and fabrication process of this novel anti-fouling titanium surface proposed in this paper provides a promising strategy for the application of titanium in the marine environment.

A series of novel hierarchical nanocomposite catalysts xCu@Cu2O/MgAlO-rGO were fabricated by calcination of CuxMg3−xAl-LDH/rGO precursors (LDH: layered double hydroxide, rGO: reduced graphene oxide, and x = 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5), obtained by a facile citric acid-assisted coprecipitation route, under a N2 flow upon in situ self-reduction of lattice atomic-dispersed Cu2+ by rGO. Systematic characterization reveals highly dispersed core–shell-like Cu@Cu2O nanoparticles near the border between vertically interconnected mixed oxide MgAlO nanoplates and rGO layers. All the obtained catalysts show extraordinary catalytic performances for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) at room temperature. The 1.0Cu@Cu2O/MgAlO-rGO shows the highest activity for complete conversion of 4-NP with an apparent rate constant (kapp) of 55.3 × 10−3 s−1, a normalized rate constant (knor) of 14 497 s−1 g−1 on an active Cu content, and an unprecedented recycling stability for 25 successive cycles, which are superior to those of the recently reported Cu- and Co-based metal nanoparticles and even compared favourably with those of the most active noble metal catalysts. The superior activity of 1.0Cu@Cu2O/MgAlO-rGO can be attributed to the highly dispersed core–shell-like Cu@Cu2O nanoparticles and the greatly enhanced four-phase synergistic effect among Cu, Cu2O, MgAlO and rGO upon calcination. Moreover, 1.0Cu@Cu2O/MgAlO-rGO shows an excellent efficiency in the fixed bed system for the treatment of simulated industrial effluents containing nitrophenols and organic dyes. The present cost-effective, highly efficient and reusable non-noble metal nanocatalyst would open a new pathway for future water remediation.

We describe a simple solvothermal method for preparation of reduced graphene oxide nanosheets decorated with uniform Cu 2 O nanoclusters by using poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)-poly(methacrylamide)-poly(vinyl imidazole) triblock co-polymer as a shape-directing agent and L -glutamic acid as a reducing agent. The resulting nanocomposite was deposited on a glassy carbon electrode where it displays improved electrocatalytic activity toward glucose oxidation in 0.5 M NaOH. This observation was exploited to construct a non-enzymatic amperometric sensor for glucose. It has a detection limit as low as 1.0 μM, high sensitivity (23.058 μA mM −1 ), and a dynamic (analytical) range that extends from 5.0 to 9595 μM at a working potential of 600 mV (vs. SCE).
Uniform Cu 2 O nanoclusters supported on reduced graphene oxide (Cu 2 O NCs/r-GO) were prepared by a simple solvothermal method in the presence of a triblock copolymer as a shape-directing agent. The nanocomposite was used to construct a non-enzymatic glucose amperometric sensor with low detection limit, high sensitivity, and wide linear range.

Despite utilization of state-of-the-art Cu-based catalysts, achieving high selectivity and stability in multicarbon (C 2+ ) compounds production through electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) remains a critical and challenging objective. Here we employ lattice chlorine-doped Cu 2 O nanocubes (Cl d -Cu 2 O NCs) with well-defined {100} facets as a model catalyst to demonstrate that halogen doping can serve as a versatile and effective strategy for modulating surface charge distribution, thereby enhancing asymmetric C–C coupling toward high-selectivity C 2+ products in CO 2 RR. Compared to Cl-free Cu 2 O NCs, Cl d -Cu 2 O NCs exhibit a greatly enhanced C 2+ Faraday efficiency, i.e., ∼85% at −1.1 V (versus the reversible hydrogen electrode). Additionally, the Cl d -Cu 2 O NCs demonstrate significantly enhanced long-term durability, attributed to better preservation of the cubic morphology and more stable Cu δ + states. In-situ electrochemical studies reveal that Cl d -Cu 2 O NCs facilitate the formation of the key asymmetric *COH and *OCCOH intermediates, ultimately leading to higher C 2+ products. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the introduced Cl-dopants disrupt the charge balance of the Cu 2 O(100) surface, enriching the Cl-adjacent Cu atoms with more electrons compared to those near O atoms. This unbalanced charge distribution significantly reduces the free energy of the rate-determining step for asymmetric C–C coupling from the *CO to *OCCOH on Cl-doped Cu 2 O (100) surface, requiring only 1.04 eV, in contrast to 1.50 eV on pristine Cu 2 O(100) surface. This study provides valuable insights into the surface charge modulation of Cu 2 O catalysts via halogen doping for enhancing asymmetric C–C coupling and C 2+ production in CO 2 RR.

Electrochemical detection of histamine (HA) faces a significant challenge: the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) causes substantial background interference at the high potentials required for HA oxidation. To address this, a novel sensing platform was constructed based on an in-situ prepared NiO/Cu/Cu 2 O heterojunction electrode, where the oxygen vacancy (O v ) density was modulated via electrodeposition to significantly enhance catalytic activity. The unique methodological advance of this platform lies in leveraging the inherent Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ redox couple for indirect HA quantification, thereby completely circumventing OER interference. The fabricated sensor demonstrates exceptional performance, including ultra-high sensitivity (3.51 mA mM −1 cm −2 ), a low detection limit (0.044 nM), and a wide linear range (1 nM to 5 × 10 6 nM). Furthermore, the platform was successfully applied to detect HA in complex matrices (fish samples), yielding results consistent with high-performance liquid chromatography. This work demonstrates the platform's potential as a robust analytical tool for convenient, rapid, and highly sensitive HA detection in real samples.

Nowadays, the occurrence of tetracycline (TC) in aquatic ecosystems has aroused considerable concerns. In this work, citric acid (CA)-modified Cu 2 O nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized by one-step method, featuring ultrasmall particle size, good visible light response, and rich oxygen vacancy, exhibited remarkable photocatalytic performance and excellent stability for the TC degradation under visible light. The as-prepared Cu 2 O NPs (4.8 nm) could degrade 95 % of TC within 5 min at pH = 5, extraordinarily superior to the currently reported Cu 2 O-based photocatalysts. The dominant reactive species in the degradation process were superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ) and electron hole (h + ). The modification with CA onto the Cu 2 O surface could promote the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and the transformation of O 2 to •O 2 − , thereby improving the photocatalytic performance. This work reveals that the CA-modified Cu 2 O NPs have great potential to serve as an effective solution for the remediation of environmental pollution.

Food freshness assessment constitutes a critical metric for quality control, where timely detection of spoilage indicators is essential for ensuring food quality. Volatile amines (VAs) are key components constituting total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), which are crucial indicators for assessing food freshness and spoilage. This study reports the synthesis of mesoporous Cu 2 O with controlled pore sizes (60, 140, 240 nm), followed by in situ reduction of platinum nanoparticles to construct high-performance nanozymes (P60-Cu 2 O@Pt, P140-Cu 2 O@Pt, P240-Cu 2 O@Pt). Systematic investigation reveals a specific surface area size-dependent enhancement in catalytic activity, with PS140-based nanozymes demonstrating optimal performance. A dual-mode sensing platform is developed by integrating P140-Cu 2 O@Pt with CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) on paper substrates. Through pH-mediated coordination with amine compounds releasing during protein decomposition, the sensor achieves simultaneous colorimetric and fluorescent detection of VAs, with limits of detection (LODs) reaching 0.834 mg/L (colorimetric) and 0.906 mg/L (fluorescent). Furthermore, a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based regression model is implemented for real-time data analysis, enabling quantitative spoilage prediction with 99 % accuracy. This eco-friendly, low-cost sensor exhibits exceptional adaptability to storage environments, with potential for integration into smart packaging systems. The technology provides consumers and suppliers with immediate freshness feedback, thereby reducing food waste and preventing foodborne illnesses.

The electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) on copper-based catalysts is a promising method to produce valuable chemicals, but its selectivity is much lower than expected largely due to insufficient research on the structure of new materials. Herein, the antimony-doped Cu/Cu2O (Cu/Cu2O–Sb) catalyst is developed for a highly selective CO2RR to CO. The synthesized Cu/Cu2O–Sb exhibits intensive suppression of hydrogen evolution, a low overpotential and high faradaic efficiency (FE) towards CO. The CO selectivity is as high as ∼95% with a partial current density of ∼6.3 mA cm−2 at −0.9 V and maintains over 90% in a broad range of potentials. DFT calculations reveal that the doping of antimony achieves the distinct activation of CO2 and suppression of hydrogen evolution. Meanwhile, the pre-adsorbed *CO significantly promotes the desorption of the neighboring *CO, which is the key for high selectivity of CO2RR to CO. This work will provide a new consideration for the origin of high selectivity during the CO2RR and pave the way toward design of highly selective CO2 reduction catalysts.

Dual-mode sensing can enhance detection reliability by cross-validating results from distinct signals. Herein, a colorimetric and turbidimetric dual-mode sensing platform based on Cu 2 O@Ag nanozyme with robust oxidase-like activity is developed for point-of-use (POU) detection of demeton. The Cu 2 O@Ag efficiently catalyzes the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), producing concurrent absorbance and turbidity signals. Demeton blocks active sites and suppresses catalytic activity in a concentration-dependent manner. Based on the principle, two modes for POU testing of demeton are developed. The first mode is based on a smartphone-assisted colorimetric swab and shows a linear range of 50 - 4000 ng/mL with the detection limit of 0.190 ng/mL. The other is based on a portable turbidimeter and exhibits a linear detection range of 50 to 3000 ng/mL with a detection limit of 2.997 ng/mL. The approaches are successfully validated in real food samples including baby cabbage, lettuce, cilantro, and tea leaves. This work presents a rapid, low-cost, and instrument-flexible dual-mode sensing strategy for on-site analysis of demeton residue. Also, the dual-mode detection based on colorimetric and turbidimetric signals for the first time offers a novel insight for dual-mode sensing.

Engineering a catalytic and hydrophilic membrane integrated system holds significant environmental implications for fouling-resistant and efficient water purification. The heterojunction Cu 2 O/Ti 3 C 2 T x was successfully synthesized by leveraging the specific interactions between the terminal active groups of MXene and Cu 2 O, effectively addressing the limitations of the catalytic membrane’s performance due to low-dose doping, and enhancing its catalytic activity and hydrophilicity. Here we report a ultra-low Cu(I) loading that achieves ultra-high fouling-resistance and decontamination performance in a self-cleaning Cu 2 O/Ti 3 C 2 T x @PVDF catalytic membrane integrated system. The representative membrane incorporating 1.0 wt% of Cu 2 O/Ti 3 C 2 T x (denoted as M-1.0) as a PMS activator demonstrated the successful performance of long-lasting antifouling and sustainable decontamination across a wide pH range in complex water matrices. The intrinsic Cu(I)/Cu(II) redox cycles was found to be crucial for driving PMS activation and oxidative conversion. Moreover, the Cu 2 O/Ti 3 C 2 T x -functionalized membrane demonstrated enhanced hydrophilicity and fouling-resistance compared to the pristine PVDF membrane. We further investigate the transformation and ecotoxicity of tetrabromobisphenol A and its intermediates within the M-1.0/PMS membrane system, providing valuable insights into the evolutionary dynamics of TBBPA. This work offers innovative perspectives for advancing environmental purification, membrane self-cleaning, and resources utilization technologies.

The design of highly active, economical and highly stable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is very important for realizing sustainable energy conversion. Herein, a Cu 2 O/NiFeCo layered double hydroxide electrode on a copper foam (CF) with a nanoarray structure (Cu 2 O/NiFeCo LDH/CF) is fabricated by using Cu(OH) 2 on CF (Cu(OH) 2 /CF) as a self-sacrificial template. The prepared Cu 2 O/NiFeCo LDH/CF has a unique hierarchical nanostructure, high electrochemical active area and excellent integration of Cu 2 O and NiFeCo LDH, resulting in low overpotentials of 228 mV and 269 mV for current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, respectively, as well as an ultrasmall Tafel slope of 40 mV dec −1 . In highly alkaline 6 M KOH, a overpotential of only 213 mV can deliver a current density of 100 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the assembled water hydrolysis device operates stably for 50 h without a significant change in the potential in the strong alkaline solution. This high-efficiency OER performance and long-term stability make Cu 2 O/NiFeCo LDH/CF promising for practical applications.
