Flower sphere-like Cu2O/CuO heterostructure derived from Cu-coordination polymer for enhancing Cl2 sensing at low-power consumption

Ting Li,Xianfa Zhang,Xiaoli Cheng,Yingming Xu,Shan Gao,Lihua Huo

It is necessary to achieve highly sensitive and low temperature detection of Cl 2 for the protection of the environment and human life and health. How to achieve sensitive detection of Cl 2 at low temperature remains a challenge. The construction of heterojunction is beneficial for promoting carrier transfer, increasing active sites, thus effectively improving sensing performance of materials. In this study, the flower sphere-like Cu 2 O/CuO composite with p-p heterojunction was obtained by using Cu-CPs as precursor followed with sintering treatment. The Cu 2 O/CuO sensor exhibits high response (S=405) to 10 ppm Cl 2 at low temperature (50 °C), the response/recovery time is 50 s/2420 s. At the same time, the Cu 2 O/CuO sensor has a low detection limit (50 ppb) and good long-term stability (60 days). The characterization results, e.g. electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), O 2 /Cl 2 -temperature programmed desorption ( O 2 /Cl 2 -TPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) etc., reveal that oxygen vacancy effectively promotes the increase of surface adsorbed oxygen, the formation of p-p heterojunction not only modulates the electronic properties of Cu 2 O/CuO but also provides abundant adsorption sites for gas. The synergistic effect of the above factors makes Cu 2 O/CuO composite exhibit satisfactory Cl 2 sensing performance.

Fengjuan Miao,Honggang Wang,Xiaoqin Li,Bairui Tao,Hui Li

To develop materials that can meet the sensing and capacitive performance of glucose. Hydrothermal and electroplating procedures were used to prepare linear NiCo 2 O 4 and nano-CuO particles, respectively. The sensor's sensitivity was 1174.57 μA mM −1  cm −1 , with a low detection limit of 0.024 μM (S/N = 3), and its detection range was 0.3–12.6 mM, with good stability as verified using an electrochemical workstation. In addition, at a current density of 2 A g −1 , this material exhibits a specific capacitance of up to 2140.0F g −1 in supercapacitors. After 5000 cycles, its stability remained at 93.89 %. Similarly, asymmetric supercapacitor devices based on nickel foam exhibit A high specific capacitance of 605.5 F g −1 at a current density of 2 A g −1 . It is demonstrated that linear NiCo 2 O 4 modified with CuO nanoparticles can be employed not only as a sensitive material for glucose sensors but also for the production of supercapacitors.

All-in-one high performance CuO@MnO2 nanozymes: Dual-signal channel 2-mercaptobenzothiazole sensing and device-free oxidative degradation

Yuan Zhang,Dong Wang,Gaili Liu,Yongjia Xiang,Kun Wang,Shaomin Shuang,Chuan Dong

2-Mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) poses an unignorable risk to the aquatic environment and human health. Traditional analysis and prevention methods are unsuitable for broader applications due to their complexity and high-cost instruments. To address these challenges, a novel CuO@MnO 2 (CM) nanozyme has been designed to establish absorbance-colorimetric dual-mode sensing and modulate the content of MBT through reactive oxygen species (ROS) mediated oxidative degradation . CM nanozyme exhibits notable catalytic ability with K m 13.6 μM and V max 0.763 μM/s. Furthermore, by integrating the generated 1 O 2 , O 2 •- and •OH in the presence of O 2 , the absorbance and colorimetric method for MBT sensing is developed, offering a linear detection range from 0.1 to 15 μM through the color change of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and TMBox. Besides, the CM nanozyme can oxidatively decompose MBT, significantly reducing its biotoxicity without needing photocatalytic auxiliary equipment. This work presents a promising MBT detection and degradation approach in future applications.

Fengxia Chang,Jinhang Chen,Jiong Tan,Zixian Pu,Dan Wang

A new and highly sensitive voltammetric technique was described in this study for the concurrent detection of endocrine disruptors bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol AF (BPAF) based on carbon nanocages (CNCs) and copper oxide nanochains (CuONCs). The CNCs was prepared by the solvothermal method and characterized using various techniques. Utilizing the nanocomposite of CNCs and CuONCs, the voltammetric sensor demonstrated outstanding performance in detecting BPA and BPAF simultaneously with distinct oxidation peaks and increased current peaks. The voltammetric signals have linear relationships with the two bisphenols ranging from 0.500 μM to 100 μM with a detection limit of 0.16 µM for BPA and 0.14 µM for BPAF. The newly designed sensor showed reliable consistency, long-term durability and anti-interference ability, and performed well in analyzing real water samples, indicating great potential for environmental monitoring.

Preparation of CuO-loaded montmorillonite for enhanced carbamazepine degradation under simulated sunlight: Unveiling the role of reactive oxygen species

Rui Li,Song Zhao,Yongqi Ma,Hongqin Wang,Fang Yin,Duo Miao

In advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), persulfates (PS) activation generates sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH), which are highly effective in the remediation of organic pollutants in water. However, the degradation mechanism of carbamazepine (CBZ) by the montmorillonite (MMT) and CuO composite-activated PS system remains insufficiently understood. This study systematically explored the effects of catalyst type, initial solution pH, inorganic anions and humic acid (HA) on CBZ degradation under simulated sunlight. The results demonstrated that 70 % CuO/MMT combined with 0.1 mol/L PS achieved a 94.28 % CBZ degradation rate at pH 7.0 within 150 min. The presence of coexisting substances (Cl − , NO 3 − , HCO 3 − , HA) inhibited CBZ degradation, with higher concentrations leading to reduced efficiency. Chemical probe and quenching experiments identified •OH, SO 4 •− , O 2 •− , and 1 O 2 , with 1 O 2 playing a dominant role in enhancing CBZ degradation. Photoelectric characterization revealed that 70 % CuO/MMT exhibits excellent visible light absorption and charge transport performance, facilitating the generation of SO 4 •− and •OH. The primary degradation products of CBZ were oxidation and ring-opening compounds, with ECOSAR modeling indicating their reduced toxicity compared to CBZ. This research provides a foundation for the potential application of MMT composite catalysts in the treatment of organic pollutants in water.

One-step calcination strategy of 3D printing CuO–ZnO–ZrO2 catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation using digital light processing (DLP)

Pengyuan Guan,Yongjie Zhao,Yihui Wu,Weixian Li,Xiao Zhang,Xiang Gao,Xiaoxia Ou,Wai Siong Chai,Yinfeng He,Hao Nan Li

CuO–ZnO–ZrO 2 catalyst attracted significant attention for CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol. Gyroid-based triply period minimal surface lattice structures feature highly ordered porous networks, which could be used to enhance catalytic performance and efficiency. This paper presents a formulating and one-step calcination strategy that united the removal of polymer resin and calcination of catalyst precursor at one temperature. This enabled 3D printing gyroid-structured CuO–ZnO–ZrO 2 catalyst for CO 2 hydrogenation while minimizing the impact of overheating on the catalyst performance. A photocurable formulation loaded with CuO–ZnO–ZrO 2 precursor was developed. Using the optimized formulation, gyroid structures with varying pore sizes were successfully printed and calcined. The optimal lattice wall thickness that balances porosity and structural stability was identified. The results indicate that the resin used for 3D printing was successfully removed at a lower temperature and the catalytic activity of the 3D-printed structured catalyst was retained through the one-step calcination process while the gyroid lattice geometry can enhance catalytic efficiency than cylindrical structure.

Zeolite-based electron buffer layer on CuO boosts persulfate activation for complete and selective Cu(III) oxidation of organics

Chen Wang,Congbi Li,Xiaohui Wu,Xiangling Zhang,Mingjie Huang,Tao Zhou

Efficient and sustainable generation of high-valent metal-oxo species (HVMs) is critical for selective decontamination via Fenton-like catalysis, however, maintaining electron density balance at the active sites remains challenging. In this study, a zeolite-supported CuO catalyst was found to induce complete and selective Cu(III) oxidation of organics through persulfate (PDS) activation. PDS activation and pollutant oxidation occurred simultaneously at the electron-rich ≡Cu sites and electron-deficient ≡Al centers, respectively. Notably, zeolite could successfully serve as an electron buffer by creating dual active centers with distinct electron densities, stabilizing the generation and retention of ≡Cu(III) for exceptional anti-interference capacity. Strong metal-support interactions tuned the ≡Cu d-band center closer to the Fermi level, efficiently promoting electron transfer to ≡Cu sites through the Al/Si-O-Cu bond for the formation of ≡Cu(III). This study unveils a zeolite-based electron buffering strategy and presents an advanced approach for developing highly efficient catalysts in PDS activation and HVMs-mediated water purification.

Tingxiang Chen,Liugen Zhang,Jiang Li,Changyan Guo,Shanshan Qiao,Yansong Zhao,Jide Wang

This paper introduces a facile method to develop core-shell nanocomposite Cu/(Cu 2 O/CuO) through gradually oxidation on Cu nanocomposite precursors. As-prepared catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity in the reaction of water oxidation reaction (WOR). Comparing with the reported catalyst, Cu/(Cu 2 O/CuO) posed one of the highest O 2 evolution around 7700 μmol g -1 ·h -1 . By analyzing the composition of catalysts in each reaction stages, the evolution pathway of Cu towards Cu 2 O/CuO and the different roles of each component in catalytic water oxidation reactions were deeply studied. In presence of high conductive Cu element and excellent light absorption Cu 2 O, the photo generated electron and holes can be effectively separated and greatly improve the efficiency of the catalyst. The evolution process and synergistic effects of the three components play a crucial role in improving photocatalytic efficiency, which promoting the nanocomposite to be a highly efficient core-shell catalyst for WOR.

Jiapeng Xu,Chaoqiang Liu,Lijuan Fu,Qingyu Liu,Seeram Ramakrishna,Wei Tang

In this work, CuO nanosheets are synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method and CuO/WS 2 heterostructures are fabricated by introducing CuO doping into WS 2 , the preparation method was employed to enhance the performance of the gas sensor. The CuO/WS 2 heterostructure nanocomposite sensor, doped with 5 % CuO, exhibited a pronounced enhancement in its response to 30 ppm of ammonia gas at ambient temperature, increasing the response value from 3.8 observed in pure WS 2 -based sensors to 4.7. Specifically, the response time of the CuO/WS 2 heterostructure-based gas sensor decreased to 180 s, whereas the WS 2 -based sensor required 350 s for NH 3 detection at room temperature. Furthermore, the CuO/WS 2 sensor demonstrated outstanding selectivity for ammonia, maintaining stability over a 90-day test with a response fluctuation of less than 5 %. The heterojunction formed by CuO and WS 2 showed superior sensitivity to NH 3 compared to pristine WS 2 , owing to a notable enhancement in the surface catalytic effect. It also displayed sensitivity to humidity, with a response value of 6.25 at a 71 % relative humidity. At last, the gas sensing and enhanced gas sensing performance mechanisms of the composites for NH 3 were elucidated. This remarkable multi-functional performance offers valuable insights for the advancement of room temperature gas sensors with diverse sensing functionalities.

In situ self-growing CuO nanoclusters on titanium dioxide for high-efficient photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin under visible light

Yaqian Zhang,Yanhua Liu,Wenxia Bai,Zhuanli Zhang,Jianbin Zhang,Dianming Li,Libang Feng

The selection of simple and effective photocatalysts is a challenge for removing Norfloxacin (NOR) from water. This study successfully synthesized CuO nanoclusters and titanium dioxide (CuO/TiO 2 ) Z-scheme heterojunction using the facile in situ self-growing method and used for photocatalytic degradation of NOR. The 1.4 % CuO/TiO 2 system achieves an 84.88 % NOR degradation efficiency in 60 min and maintains over 78.42 % efficiency after five cycles when exposed to visible light, which is higher than that of CuO and TiO 2 , respectively. The internal electric field established between them expedited the separation and transfer of electron-hole pairs, thereby boosting photocatalytic activity. Moreover, the active species that take part in the photocatalytic reaction were identified as ·O 2 − , ·OH, and h + radicals. According to the mass spectrometry (MS) test, the possible three photocatalytic degradation pathways of NOR were investigated. Finally, the heterojunction formation and charge transfer mechanism of CuO/TiO 2 are proposed and validated with DFT calculation. This study applies simple, low-cost CuO/TiO 2 for efficient NOR degradation under visible light, providing an insight into the scale-up removal of NOR from water.

Gas-Sensing Study and Applications of Triboelectric Nanogenerator-Powered CuO-Modified CeO2 Nanomaterials for Ammonia Sensor at Room Temperature

Junsheng Ding,Yingang Gui,Hua Huang

Ammonia (NH3) is a common agricultural gas, and its accurate detection is critical to agricultural production. In this study, nano-CuO/CeO2composites were prepared to achieve a wide range of ammonia detection at room temperature. Characterization data verified the composite heterojunction structure of CuO/CeO2, which demonstrates an outstanding large specific surface area for ammonia detection. It provides more active sites for NH3molecules, which brings a very high response to ammonia (70.3% @100 ppm NH3), a large detection range (0.5–200 ppm NH3), and a fast response/recovery time (13 s/17 s @20 ppm NH3). Systematic testing showed that the nano-CuO/CeO2composites also exhibit excellent extended-term stability and selectivity. Further studies showed that the p-n heterojunction structure of CuO/CeO2allowed the composite to retain its gas-sensitive properties to ammonia, in addition to the improved ammonia-detection range of the composite based on the synergistic effect of these two materials. The mechanism of CuO/CeO2heterojunction nanocomposites towards ammonia detection was also elucidated from a microscopic perspective at the molecular level. Finally, a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) that can be driven by wind power has been prepared, upon which the feasibility of the combination of the TENG and the ammonia sensor to realize environmental monitoring was investigated.

Li Xiaomeng,Kong Weisu,Qin Xia,Qu Fengli,Lu Limin

A facile and sensitive self-powered cathodic photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor is reported for the detection of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) based on CuO-Cu 2 O nanowire array grown on Cu mesh (CuO-Cu 2 O NWA/CM) as electrode. The mixed narrow band gaps of the CuO-Cu 2 O heterostructure ensured its wide absorption band, effective electron/hole separation, and high photocatalytic activity in the visible region. In addition, nanowires directly grown on the substrate provided high specific surface area and exposed abundant active sites, thus guaranteeing its high photocatalytic efficiency. Therefore, the self-powered sensor exhibited favorable analytical performance with fast response, wide linear ranges of 0.01 to 5 ng/mL and 5 to 100 ng/mL, an acceptable detection limit of 3 pg/mL, and reasonable selectivity and stability. The proposed CuO-Cu 2 O NWA/CM can be considered a promising visible light-responsive photoactive material for fabrication of PEC aptasensor with high performance. a Schematic illustration of construction process of PEC sensing platform based on the CuO-Cu 2 O composite for PSA detection. b Schematic mechanism of the operating PEC system.
