MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are crucial for various basic cellular processes and have been regarded as an important indicator for pathogenesis and development of cancer. While miRNAs are characterized by short sequence length, large single cell copy number variation, low abundance in vivo, and high homologous sequence similarity. The development of miRNA detection methods with high sensitivity, good selectivity and low cost is the key to study the function of miRNA. In this article, a method combining isothermal chain replacement amplification and G-quadruplex (G4) specific detection is developed for highly specific and sensitive detection of miRNA. By designing proper DNA sequences, a three-stranded DNA complex was formed and produced a lot of G4 structure sequences, which can be stained by specific fluorescence dye and quantified. In the experiment, the fluorescence dye shows extremely high specificity, which brings excellent signal discrimination, so that the target miRNAs can be accurately detected. Experiments under high background noise also verified this method is highly selective for target miRNAs. This method holds great imagination in expanding the detection methods to more platforms, such as nanopore sensors, because it alters the secondary structure of DNA sequences.

Alternative antibody-binding affinity ligands are expected to support robust time- and cost-effective antibody purification with rapid improvement of upstream productivity and demand on downstream process optimization. Five new tetrapeptide biomimetic affinity ligands (FYRH, HWRH, YHRI, HYRF, and FHRA) were screened by modeling the molecular interaction mechanism between tetrapeptide ligands and the Fc fragment of IgG with molecular dynamics simulation and the flexible docking method, and the corresponding five resins were prepared in this work to evaluate their adsorption characteristics of human immunoglobulin G (hIgG). The results showed that the binding capacities to hIgG of the five resins showed a strong pH-dependency, which was high at pH 7.0–9.0, and extremely low at pH 5.0–6.0, providing a benefit choice to separate hIgG. The dynamic binding capacities (DBC) at 10% breakthrough of five resins could reach up to 28–37 mg/mLgel, and Ac-FYRH-4FF resin showed the best adsorption performance. The elution test results with Ac-FYRH-4FF resin indicated that hIgG could be eluted mildly at pH 5.0 with a 96.5% recovery, meaning that this resin can be considered as a powerful candidate of alternative biomimetic affinity chromatographic resin.

The g-C3N4 nanosheet/TiO2 (CNNS/TiO2) heterojunctions have been synthesized by using polydopamine (PDA) as both linker and inducer enlightened by the bioadhesion and biomineralization mechanisms existing in mussel and shellfish in this study. In the as-prepared CNNS/TiO2 sample, TiO2 nanoparticles about 5 nm in size distribute on the CNNS surface uniformly. Moreover, the heterojunction structure is formed between TiO2 and CNNS. In contrast with CNNS and TiO2, the CNNS/TiO2 heterojunctions display much more superior Rhodamine B (RhB) photocatalytic degradation activity, which can reach 100% within 60 min under irradiation of visible light and preserves excellent stability after four recycles. The heterojunction structure formed by CNNS and TiO2 is conducive for separation of the photogenerated carriers and thus is favorable for improving photocatalytic performance. This method may develop a novel avenue to broadly synthesizing CNNS-based nanocomposites with superior photocatalytic performance.

One of the major challenges associated with fuel cells is exploring highly efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, the feasibility of using Ti3C2 MXene nanoparticles (NPs) to enhance the electrocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 for ORR was investigated. By varying the content of Ti3C2 NPs, a series of g-C3N4/Ti3C2 heterostructures were obtained, displaying enhanced electrocatalytic activity, including a positive shift in both onset and peak potentials toward ORR, compared to the original g-C3N4 in basic solution. We attribute the improvement to the favorable electrical conductivity of well-dispersed Ti3C2 MXene nanoparticles and also enhanced O2 adsorption due to the electronic coupling effect between g-C3N4 and Ti3C2 in the heterostructures. This work demonstrates the potential of earth-abundant MXene family materials to construct low-cost and high-performance electrocatalysts.

The comfortable, beautiful and healthy residential environment has been a target pursued by human beings. However, the inevitable presences of indoor air pollutants such as nicotine which release from tobacco smoking imperceptibly invade people's health. Here, we developed new pigments consisted by colorful graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 )-based catalysts, which were fabricated by facile calcining and water bath refluxing procedures. The catalytic pigments exhibited a high catalytic activity for the removal of nicotine under sunlight or even light emitting diode (LED). The designed experiments revealed that superoxide radicals ( O 2 − ) were main active species in g-C 3 N 4 -based catalysts system and played a significant role in removing contaminants. Noteworthy, the catalysts as pigments were successfully used for coloring textiles and painting. Both the catalytic textiles and paintings were provided with preferably photocatalytic performance and reusability. The catalytic pigments were simple to prepare, brightly colored and could effectively degrade nicotine, thus not only have decorative effect, enriching the spiritual world, but also contribute to the protection of the environment of human life.

Modified g-C3N4 samples (g-X, where X corresponds to the number of hours of acid treatment of the melamine) with outstanding photocatalytic performance were prepared by using hydrochloric acid-treated melamine as a precursor and calcining at 550 °C for 2 h. An x-ray diffractometer, field-emission scanning electron microscope, infrared spectrometer, N2 adsorption–desorption test, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet–visible diffuse–reflectance spectroscopy analysis were carried out to characterize the phase composition, microstructure, chemical structure, specific surface area (SSA), chemical states, elemental composition and optical properties of the samples, respectively. The photocatalytic performance of the samples was evaluated by degrading the Rhodamine B (RhB) aqueous solution. The results showed that the crystal structure and vibration bands of melamine changed due to the reaction with hydrochloric acid. The crystallinity and grain size of g-C3N4 in g-X (X = 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10) reduced, and the SSA values of g-X increased compared to that of the g-0 sample, which was synthesized from pristine melamine. The g-X samples exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity towards degradation of RhB compared to g-0. The photocatalytic activity of the g-X samples increased gradually as the acid treatment time of the melamine increased from 1 h to 2 h, and then decreased gradually with the extension of the acid treatment time. The rate constant (k) values of g-X are higher than that of g-0. g-2 presented the highest rate constant (k = 0.052 min−1), which was 5.5 times higher than that of g-0. The improved photocatalytic activity of the g-X samples was attributed to the higher SSA value, the appearance of surface defects, the outstanding photo-carrier separation efficiency and stronger light harvesting ability of g-X, with the last two factors being more significant. Acid treatment of melamine is helpful in the preparation of high performance g-C3N4 photocatalyst, and the microstructure and photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4 were affected significantly by the acid treatment time.

The development of catalysts that effectively activate target pollutants and promote their complete conversion is an admirable objective in the environmental photocatalysis field. In this work, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) microtubes with tunable N-vacancy concentrations were controllably fabricated using an in situ soft-chemical method. The morphological evolution of g-C3N4, from the bulk to the porous tubular architecture, is discussed in detail with the aid of time-resolved hydrothermal experiments. We found that the NO removal ratio and apparent reaction rate constant of the g-C3N4 microtubes were 1.8 and 2.6 times higher than those of pristine g-C3N4, respectively. By combining detailed experimental characterization and density functional theory calculations, the effects of N-vacancies in the g-C3N4 microtubes on O2 and NO adsorption activation, electron capture, and electronic structure were systematically investigated. These results demonstrate that surface N-vacancies act as specific sites for the adsorption activation of reactants and photoinduced electron capture, while enhancing the light-absorbing capability of g-C3N4. Moreover, the porous wall structures of the as-prepared g-C3N4 microtubes facilitate the diffusion of reactants, and their tubular architectures favor the oriented transfer of charge carriers. The intermediates formed during photocatalytic NO removal processes were identified by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, and different reaction pathways over pristine and N-deficient g-C3N4 are proposed. This study provides a feasible strategy for air pollution control over g-C3N4 by introducing N-vacancy and porous tubular architecture simultaneously.

A novel functional coating was prepared from self-assembled micelles through direct electrophoretic deposition. The micelles were obtained via self-assembly of amphiphilic hyaluronic acid- g -dopamine (HA- g -DA) in aqueous solution with encapsulation of bovine hemoglobin (BHb). The size, morphology, and zeta potential of the resulting micelles were characterized. Then, the micelles were immobilized onto conductive substrate using electrophoretic deposition technique to fabricate nanostructured coating. The structure and morphology of the resulting coating were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The release behavior of BHb from the coating was evaluated in a simulated body fluid (SBF), and the BHb was released up to 20 days. And in vitro assay demonstrated that the nanostructured coating is biocompatible to NIH3T3 and Hela cells, respectively. The contribution of our work lies in the creation of a novel strategy to fabricate a functional coating in viewing of the versatility of self-assembled micelles and the controllability of electrophoretic deposition process. It is believed that our work provides new ideas and reliable data to design functional coatings for biomedical applications.

Novel g-C 3 N 4 /Bi 5 O 7 I heterojunction microspheres having excellent photocatalytic activity were successfully prepared by a one-pot ethylene glycol (EG)-assisted hydrothermal method followed by calcination in air. Bi 5 O 7 I microspheres grafted with g-C 3 N 4 nano-sheets were formed and studied by electron microscopy. The morphological effects on g-C 3 N 4 /Bi 5 O 7 I photocatalytic capability with varied g-C 3 N 4 contents were investigated and discussed. The g-C 3 N 4 /Bi 5 O 7 I microspheres exhibited much improved photocatalytic degradation performance under visible light irradiation compared with bare Bi 5 O 7 I and g-C 3 N 4 . The preparation conditions of g-C 3 N 4 /Bi 5 O 7 I microspheres with optimal photocatalytic ability for degrading methyl orange (MO) and rhodamine (RhB) were established. Analyses by both photoluminescence (PL) and photocurrent independently confirmed that photo-induced electron-hole pairs in the g-C 3 N 4 /Bi 5 O 7 I composite have been effectively created which was responsible for the observed photocatalysis. Based on the analysis of the experiment results, a Z-Scheme heterojunction photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. The excellent photocatalytic performance could be attributed to the effective charge separation at the interface between g-C 3 N 4 and Bi 5 O 7 I and the enhanced visible light absorption. In addition, the photocatalytic mechanism was discussed on the basis of the relative band positions of these two semiconductor materials.

Graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) nanosheets have been facilely assembled via electrostatic interaction onto cotton fabrics for achieving multi-functionalities. The surface morphologies, chemical composition and optical features of the g-C 3 N 4 -coated fabrics were characterized. The treated cotton fabrics exhibited remarkable photocatalytic degradation activity and superior self-cleaning performance. A complete degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) and removal of stains were accomplished under simulated sunlight irradiation. More importantly, the modified fabrics can be reused in catalysis reactions with great durability. The practical treatment approach demonstrated from this work has great potential to be applied in textile industry for functional fabrics manufacture.

The g-C 3 N 4 -agar hybrid aerogel was obtained by a heating-cooling polymerization process with agar and g-C 3 N 4 powder as the raw material, which showed outstanding adsorption properties due to its three-dimensional network structure. Under the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalytic degradation, the hybrid aerogels could effectively remove organic pollutants from wastewater. The g-C 3 N 4 -agar hybrid aerogels could adsorb the methylene blue molecules to the surface of the photocatalyst, but the adsorption capacity decreases with the decrease of agar content. In addition, the optical absorption and photocurrent response show remarkable improvement with respect to g-C 3 N 4 -agar hybrid aerogels as compared with that of bare g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst. The optimized 60% g-C 3 N 4 -agar sample exhibited preferable simulated-sunlight photocatalytic degradation efficiency towards the dye and antibiotic pollutants, as well as excellent recycle performance. Such a g-C 3 N 4 -agar hybrid aerogel could be envisaged to possess great potentials in practical wastewater treatment.

Construction of heterostructured photocatalysts is a feasible method for improving hydrogen production from water splitting because of its good charge transport efficiency. Herein, we coupled the Ti-MOFs (TiATA) with metal-free graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) to synthesize composites, g-C 3 N 4 @TiATA, in which a heterostructure was formed between g-C 3 N 4 and TiATA. The establishment of heterojunctions not only broadens the light absorption range of g-C 3 N 4 @TiATA (490 nm) by contrast with g-C 3 N 4 (456 nm), but also greatly accelerates charge migration. Photocatalytic studies present that the construction of heterostructure steering the charges flow from g-C 3 N 4 to TiATA and then delivery to the cocatalyst of Pt nanoparticles , exhibiting an impressively photocatalytic hydrogen production rate (265.8 μmol·h −1 ) in assistance of 300 W Xenon lamp, which is about 3.4 times as much as g-C 3 N 4 /Pt.
