Study on aromatics production via the catalytic pyrolysis vapor upgrading of biomass using metal-loaded modified H-ZSM-5

Yunwu Zheng,Fei Wang,Xiaoqin Yang,Yuanbo Huang,Can Liu,Zhifeng Zheng,Jiyou Gu

The main objective of this work was to study aromatics production via the catalytic pyrolysis upgrading of biomass using metal-loaded modified H-ZSM-5. M-ZSM-5 catalysts were prepared through the impregnation method with Zn, Ga, Ni, Co, Mg and Cu. The prepared M-ZSM-5 catalysts were evaluated by x-ray diffraction, thermal desorption spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The properties, composition and product distribution of bio-oil were also analysed. Results showed that the M-ZSM-5 catalysts yielded a higher amount of non-condensable gas at the expense of the liquid yields. The Ga-ZSM-5 catalysts produced the highest yields of bio-oil (25.76   wt%), but the lowest amount of coke (22.08   wt%) compared with the unmodified ZSM-5 catalyst (33.38   wt%). The content of the single-ring aromatics prepared by using the Zn-ZSM-5 catalysts was the highest at 90.28   wt%, whereas that of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon prepared by the Ni-ZSM-5 catalysts was the highest at 31.36   wt%. Moreover, the selectivity of the single-ring aromatic hydrocarbons, such as C7 and C8, were significantly affected by the use of the M-ZSM-5 catalysts. The Zn-ZSM-5 catalysts were the most selective for toluene and xylenes with contents of 36.52   wt% and 35.32   wt%, respectively, whereas the Co-based catalysts were the most selective for indene. The Ni-based catalysts can obviously improve the selectivities of benzene production and C10+ polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Zn-ZSM-5 was the most effective catalyst that can be used in the production of aromatic hydrocarbons.

Facile fabrication of eugenol-containing polysiloxane films with good optical properties and excellent thermal stability via Si–H chemistry

Minghao Yi,Xunjun Chen,Peter S. Shuttleworth,Lewen Tan,Yunqing Ruan,Yixin Xu,Jiefeng Zheng,Shufang Wu,Sen Hu,Simin Xie,Zhixing Guan,Guoqiang Yin,Yingde Cui

Transparent and easily fabricated films were obtained through the coupling of eugenol, a bio-sourced feedstock, and poly(methylhydrosiloxane), via the Piers–Rubinsztajn reaction and Pt-catalysed hydrosilylation. The precursor reagents are readily available and economical, and the reaction process used was mild and easily undertaken. Additionally, poly(methylhydrosiloxane), having an abundant source of pendant Si–H groups, can be cross-linked with eugenol at multiple juncture points, and thus the eugenol content in these films ranges from 13.12 to 45.42 wt%. It was found that as the eugenol content increased, the thermal stability of the films also improved, with T10% and Rw at 700 °C ranging from 350.1 to 584.3 °C and 46.41 to 86.63%, respectively, which is higher than other analogous biomass-derived polysiloxanes. Crucially, the prepared films also exhibited suitable optical properties, with a >90% transmittance within the 430–1100 nm region and near 100% absorbance in the UV region (<350 nm), verifying their potential applications as optical encapsulants. Aside from good light transmittance, the refractive index of the films increased from 1.44 to 1.52 (at 450 nm) with higher ratios of eugenol. This demonstrates their suitability for use as high-refractive index (>1.5) LED encapsulants and also in stacked multi-layer reflectors. In addition, to protect the encapsulated chips from moisture erosion, these films exhibit good water vapour barrier properties and water repellence.

Single-Atom Iron with Fe–S2O2 Structure as an Amphiphilic Catalyst for Enhanced Selective Oxidation of C–H Bonds

Chen Yuhan,Xie Haiyang,Wu Yubo,Luo Jiangxue,Zhan Tianren,Zhang Yanjuan,Huang Zuqiang,Hu Huayu,Gan Tao

Developing highly efficient Fe-based single-atom catalysts (SACs) for the selective oxidation of C–H bonds to produce value-added aromatic ketones under mild conditions is still challenging. Herein, the construction of amphiphilic Fe SACs with electron-deficient Fe–S 2 O 2 structure supported on porous S-doped lignin-derived carbon (Fe 1 /SLC) was achieved using a ball milling combined with an impregnation method. Due to the synergistic interaction between electron-deficient Fe–S 2 O 2 sites and ethylbenzene (EB)–water microinterfacial effects, Fe 1 /SLC markedly enhanced the catalytic activity and acetophenone (AP) selectivity for the selective oxidation of EB to AP under 60 ° C for 12 h, obtaining an AP selectivity of 99.1% at 99.0% EB conversion and a high turnover frequency (TOF) of 2422.3 mmol EB g Fe –1 h –1 , which were much higher than those of the control catalyts (Fe 1 /LC and Fe NPs /SLC), surpassing most reported catalysts in similar reaction system. The electron-deficient Fe–S 2 O 2 sites were conducive to the cleavage of TBHP to generate 1 O 2 , • O 2 – , and • OH radicals, wherein • O 2 – was dominant, while 1 O 2 and • OH performed a secondary role. Meanwhile, the density functional theory calculations revealed that the amphiphilic property of Fe 1 /SLC induced by the C–SO x –C structure heightened the catalytic activity and AP selectivity, which originated from the unique interfacial hydrogen-bonding interactions and adsorption energy gradients. Furthermore, Fe 1 /SLC showed excellent recyclability, long-term storage stability, and satisfactory universality. This work provides a promising strategy to simultaneously improve the catalytic activity and aromatic ketones selectivity of the selective oxidation of C–H bonds.

Deng Tanjun,Zhong Weijie,Mei Zixian,Zhu Lin,Meng Xuchen,Lv Xin,Xiao Jiexi,Zhao Xiaoxian,Wang Zengguang,Hou Lingli,Tan Sirui,Pan Yuheng,Zhou Lingling,Zheng Ao,Cao Lingyan,Li Yi

Post-craniotomy scalp infection with antibiotic-resistant bacteria remains a great challenge in neurosurgery clinical practice, which hinders the healing process and increases the risk of intracranial infection, thereby endangering life. In this study, a versatile injectable hydrogel dressing with antibacterial and angiogenic activity composed of Pluronic F-127, silk fibroin (SF), and graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) is fabricated (F-127/SF/GOQDs). The hydrogel is rapidly formed through thermosensitive gelation at body temperature and has controllable degradation and good biocompatibility. In vitro studies show that the F-127/SF/GOQDs hydrogel demonstrates excellent antibacterial performance (including drug-resistant strains) through photothermal treatment (PTT) via disruption of cellular energy metabolism and membrane function. In the meantime, the F-127/SF/GOQDs hydrogel promotes endothelial cell migration and differentiation toward CD31 hi Emcn hi type H vessels. In vivo results using post-craniotomy scalp infection models show that the hydrogel significantly enhances bacterial clearance to accelerate wound closure, and promotes angiogenesis and the immune modulation, which are related to enhanced collagen deposition, re-epithelialization and, ultimately accelerates wound healing of post-craniotomy scalp infections. Collectively, this multifunctional F-127/SF/GOQDs hydrogel, with dual action of photothermal antibacterial efficacy and type H vessels-related angiogenesis promotion, emerges as an innovative injectable dressing with potential for advancing post-craniotomy scalp infection management. Boosting the OER via the metal–support interaction and H-bond network: amorphous RuOx on fluorinated Ruddlesden–Popper perovskites

Ziye Feng,Zijie Peng,Yang Xu,Ming Zhang,Junfang Cheng

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is central to water electrolysis for green hydrogen production, where the development of efficient, stable, and cost-effective catalysts remains a key challenge. Ruthenium (Ru)-based catalysts are highly promising for OER, yet their practical deployment is limited by poor stability and low atomic utilization. Here, we report a fluorination-assisted loading strategy to fabricate an amorphous@crystalline composite catalyst, in which amorphous RuOx active species are anchored onto a fluorine-modified Ruddlesden–Popper (R-P) perovskite support (La1.2Sr0.8Ni0.6Fe0.4O4+δFy) to form the catalyst denoted as RuOx@LSNF-F. Fluorination induces robust metal–support interactions via electronegativity differences, stabilizing Ru4+ to balance the activity and stability while constructing an ordered hydrogen-bond network and optimizing the surface wettability. Electrochemical tests in 1.0 M KOH confirm the exceptional OER performance of RuOx@LSNF-F, which achieves an overpotential of 287 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a Tafel slope of 75 mV dec−1, and a double-layer capacitance of 3.7 mF cm−2 while maintaining stable operation for over 100 h, outperforming its non-fluorinated counterpart, the pristine support, and other benchmark Ru-based catalysts. Mechanistic studies reveal that the exceptional performance arises from the synergistic coupling of the adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) and lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM), enabled by the fluorination-engineered interface, while a hydrogen bond network is enhanced on the amorphous RuOx layer to accelerate deprotonation and improve the surface wettability. This work presents a strategy for designing high-performance perovskite-based OER catalysts and advances the understanding of their structure–activity relationships.

Unveiling synergistic H+/O2−/e− transport in modular triple-phase composite air electrodes for efficient reversible protonic ceramic cells

Fangjie Liu,Zaifu Gong,HaiZhao Li,Wuhui Li,Yuliang Liu,Qingjie Wang

Proposes a functional modularization strategy to fabricate BZCY-GDC-LCO electrodes. • Exhibits low polarization resistance (0.141 Ω·cm 2 ) with 216 h stable operation. • Single cell delivers 0.757 W·cm −2 (FC) and 1.182 A·cm −2 at 1.3 V (EC) at 650 °C. Efficient triple-conduction (H + /O 2− /e − ) is vital for high-performance reversible protonic ceramic cells (R-PCCs), yet the underlying transport mechanisms and their specific impacts on electrode kinetics remain elusive. In this work, we employ a “functional modularization” strategy to engineer a BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.2 O 3−δ -Gd 0.1 Ce 0.9 O 1.95 -LaCoO 3 (BZCY-GDC-LCO) triple-phase composite air electrode using commercially available precursors. The synergistic effects and individual roles of the conducting species in optimizing electrochemical kinetics were systematically investigated. The optimized BZCY-GDC-LCO electrode (1:1:1 mass ratio) exhibits excellent chemical compatibility, high oxygen vacancy concentration, and a well-distributed triple-phase boundary. Consequently, it achieves a low polarization resistance of 0.141 Ω·cm 2 at 650 °C and demonstrates robust long-term stability over 216 h of operation. Single-cell tests deliver a peak power density of 0.757 W·cm −2 in fuel cell mode and a current density of 1.182 A·cm −2 at 1.3 V in electrolysis mode at 650 °C. Kinetic analysis reveals oxygen adsorption/dissociation as the rate-determining step, while excessive steam partial pressure inhibits oxygen transport via surface site passivation. This work provides a scalable design strategy for high-performance R-PCC air electrodes, demonstrating that superior performance and favorable techno-economic feasibility can be achieved using conventional materials. Carboxylated CNT–Vanadium Hexacyanoferrate Cathode Enabling High-Energy-Density Quasi-Solid-State H₂ Batteries with Enhanced Low-Temperature Performance

Xiuquan Chen,Yuhua Zhao,Xiaodong Rang,Simin Hong,Jie Zhang,Xiang Cui,Yajing Liu

Rechargeable hydrogen batteries based on reversible proton insertion are promising for large-scale energy storage; however, most reported cathodes remain limited to capacities below 60 mAh g-1. Here, we report a carboxylated carbon nanotube-vanadium hexacyanoferrate (CC-VHCF) cathode for quasi-solid-state H₂ gas batteries. The comparison with C-VHCF suggests that carboxyl functionalization in the CNT-containing composite is associated with improved proton transport and storage behavior, affording a high capacity of 160.9 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 and an energy density of 109.7 Wh kg-1. A full cell comprising this cathode, a hydrogen anode, and a bentonite-phosphoric acid (BP) proton-conducting quasi-solid-state electrolyte achieves 163.7 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 with an energy density of 128.5 Wh kg⁻¹, based on the mass of the cathode active material, ranking among the highest values reported on a cathode-active-material basis for hydrogen batteries. The device exhibits strong rate capability and long-term cycling stability, retaining ~66% of its capacity after 10000 cycles at 20 A g-1. Notably, it maintains 88.9 mAh g-1 at -40 °C with negligible decay and operates reliably under extreme climatic conditions down to -80 °C, representing one of the best low-temperature performances reported for hydrogen and proton batteries.

Synergistic strain and metal-support interactions in a hollow Pt3Co/H-TiN-C nanoreactor for enhanced oxygen reduction reaction

Zhang Jun,Liu Boyu,Luo Laizheng,Liang Pingjuan,Li Jinzhi,Jiang Lingying,Chen Xingyi,Tang Huan,Chen Longxiang,Jin Meng,Wu Weimin,Lu Shi-Yu

The development of cost-effective, highly active and durable Pt-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remains a major challenge to advancing proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Hollow nanoarchitecture loaded with metal alloys has been widely used as a nanoreactor to regulate electronic structure of active sites and enhance reactant enrichment. In this study, PtCo alloy nanoparticles are uniformly dispersed on both outer and inner surfaces of hollow TiN spheres and carbon composite support (Pt 3 Co/H-TiN-C). The optimized Pt 3 Co/H-TiN-C nanoreactor delivers a mass activity of 64 mA mg Pt −1 and a specific activity of 0.122 mA cm Pt −2 at 0.90 V vs. RHE in 0.1 M HClO 4 solution. Furthermore, the Pt 3 Co/H-TiN-C nanoreactor enables an effective four-electron transfer pathway with high selectivity and low H 2 O 2 yield (less than 3%) toward ORR process. After accelerated durability tests, the half-wave potential of Pt 3 Co/H-TiN-C shows a decay of only 24 mV after 10,000 cycles, markedly smaller than Pt/C catalyst (74 mV). The enhanced durability and ORR kinetics of Pt 3 Co/H-TiN-C are attributed to the synergistic effect of strain effect in PtCo alloy, strong interactions between PtCo and H-TiN-C, and nanoreactor architecture. These features not only regulate the Pt electronic structure, increasing the Pt 0 content, but also expose more accessible active sites on the outer/inner surfaces to accelerate charge/mass transport. Moreover, alloyed Co atom suppress the dissolution of Pt, endowing an improved durability. This work provides a new strategy for designing efficient and durable Pt-based ORR catalysts for PEMFCs.

Laminated structure design for strengthening and toughening of h-BN/ZrB2-SiC composite ceramics with directional thermal conduction performance

Ning Zhang,Zhuo Zhang,Xiping Song,Jing Zhang,Haijun Su

To address the poor mechanical properties of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) ceramics while maintaining their high directional thermal conduction performance, this study proposes a laminated structure design using h-BN as the soft, thermally anisotropic matrix layer and ZrB 2 -SiC as the hard reinforcing layer. h-BN/ZrB 2 -SiC laminated composite ceramics with different layer thickness ratios were fabricated via tape casting and hot-pressing. The h-BN grains maintain strong preferred orientation with their c-axes aligned parallel to the sintering pressure, even after introducing ZrB 2 -SiC layers. At an optimal layer thickness ratio of 1:1, the laminated ceramic achieves the best mechanical performance, with a flexural strength of 169.09 ± 18.67 MPa and a fracture toughness of 8.32 ± 0.97 MPa·m 1/2 , representing increases of 74% and 169%, respectively, compared with tape casted monolithic h-BN ceramics. These enhancements arise from synergistic toughening mechanisms including crack deflection, branching and delamination. Moreover, the laminated structure preserves strong anisotropic thermal conduction. At a layer thickness ratio of 2:1, the composite exhibits the highest thermal conduction anisotropy, with a temperature difference of ∼5 °C between in-plane and through-plane directions at 150 °C. These results demonstrate that the h-BN/ZrB 2 -SiC laminated architecture effectively combines high directional heat transfer with significantly improved mechanical properties, offering a promising solution for advanced thermal management in microelectronics and high-power devices.

Synergy between h-BN tribo-catalytic graphitization and CH4 gas passivation: Achieving ultralow friction in diamond-like carbon film

Lin Chen,Xia Li,Guangan Zhang

Optimizing the tribological performance of moving components with lubricating materials is crucial for reducing energy consumption and carbon footprint. Spin-coating two-dimensional materials represents an effective approach to lowering the friction coefficient of typical lubricating materials such as diamond-like carbon (DLC). However, the influence of third-body introduction on lubricant–environment interfacial interactions remains unclear. Herein, h-BN, which catalyzes carbon graphitization, was selected to systematically investigate its regulatory effect on the tribological behavior of DLC under an energy-gas CH 4 atmosphere. The synergistic effect between the tribo-catalytic action of h-BN and the intrinsic structure of the films leads to significant differences in the degree of friction coefficient improvement for DLC with distinct bonding structures: the friction coefficient of low-sp 3 -content DLC is reduced by 45%, while that of high-sp 3 -content and high-sp 2 -content DLC is significantly enhanced with a reduction of no less than 20%. Structural characterization of the tribological interface reveals that h-BN catalyzes graphitization at the sliding interface, transforming the transfer film on the wear scar from a Gr/amorphous carbon superlattice structure into a coexisting structure of continuous graphene and amorphous carbon. The formation of continuous graphene suppresses interfacial dehydrogenation and strengthens surface passivation. This study reveals the competitive mechanism between third-body tribo-catalytic graphitization and shear-induced gas adsorption at the DLC sliding interface, providing a new strategy for the design of ultra-low-friction DLC films.

Light-induced interfacial charge redistribution in a BiOCl/Zn₃In₂S₆ heterojunction for H₂O₂ production and pollutant degradation

Linlin Wang,Bingjie Liu,Meng Liu,Jikun Li,Jinglei De,Yangchuan Ke

A BiOCl/ZIS heterojunction was constructed by ultrasound-assisted assembly. • Interfacial coupling induced directional redistribution of photocarriers. • 3-BZ efficiently degraded concentrated RhB, CR, and TC under visible light. • 3-BZ achieved efficient photocatalytic H₂O₂ production under visible light. • In situ XPS and DFT supported type-II electron transfer from ZIS to BiOCl. An ultrasound-assisted assembly route was used to construct a BiOCl/Zn₃In₂S₆ (ZIS) heterojunction for visible-light-driven pollutant degradation and H₂O₂ production. After 120 min of irradiation, the optimized composite degraded 99.59% of Rhodamine B (RhB, 600 mg/L), 99.82% of Congo red (CR, 200 mg/L), and 83.50% of Tetracycline (TC, 80 mg/L). In a separate O₂-saturated medium containing 10 vol% isopropanol, the H₂O₂ yield reached 5644 μmol g⁻¹ over the same period. In situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that Bi 4 f, Cl 2p, and O 1 s shifted toward lower binding energies, whereas the ZIS-associated core levels shifted toward higher binding energies. These opposite changes indicate photoelectron enrichment in BiOCl and electron depletion in ZIS. Density functional theory calculations revealed a larger work function for BiOCl (6.72 eV) than for ZIS (5.33 eV), while the differential charge density confirmed interfacial electron redistribution. Together with the density-of-states and experimental band-edge results, these findings support a type-II pathway in which electrons migrate from the ZIS conduction band (CB) to the BiOCl CB, while holes transfer from the BiOCl valence band (VB) to the ZIS VB. The resulting carrier separation favors O₂ reduction toward H₂O₂ formation and promotes oxidative pollutant degradation. Download: Download high-res image (225KB) Download: Download full-size image

Rapid photothermal self-healing bio-based waterborne polyurethane enabled by oxime-urethane and quadruple hydrogen bonds with h-BN

Kangjia Song,Jie Liu,Feifei Zhang,Chenduo Zhang

A high bio-based content (86.3 wt%) waterborne polyurethane was designed using renewable PLA, HCO, and PDI. • Oxime groups and UPy quadruple hydrogen bonds synergistically enhance mechanical properties and self-healing capability. • h-BN doping increases thermal conductivity by 112% and enables photothermal healing. To address the inherent conflict between the environmental sustainability and material durability of bio-based waterborne polyurethane (BWPU), this research proposes a synergistic strategy that integrates bio-based materials, functional nanofillers, and dual dynamic bonding networks. These networks consist of quadruple hydrogen-bonding arrays from 2-amino-6-methylpyrimidin-4(3H)-one (UPy) units and dynamic covalent oxime bonds. Firstly, a series of oxime-containing BWPUs was synthesized from bio-based polylactic acid polyol (PLA), hydrogenated castor oil (HCO), and 1,5-pentamethylene diisocyanate (PDI), with dimethylglyoxime (DMG) or 1,4-benzoquinone dioxime (BQDO) as chain extenders instead of conventional small-molecule diols, i.e., 1,4-Butanediol (BDO). Subsequently, a dual dynamic crosslinked network was established via end-capping modification with UPy. Finally, the hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) was incorporated to enhance thermal conductivity of composite material. The experimental results showed that, compared with the single oxime-based system, the dual dynamic network constructed based on the oxime-urethane and UPy quadruple hydrogen bonds (BWPU-Q-U10) significantly enhances the comprehensive mechanical properties. The toughness of the BWPU-Q-U10 film increases from 1660.3 MJ/m 3 to 2907.4 MJ/m 3 . Furthermore, this material achieves a self-healing efficiency of 97.2% within 24 h at room temperature (25 °C), demonstrating an optimal synergy between mechanical properties and self-healing efficiency. On this basis, the introduction of 10 wt% h-BN, identified as the optimal loading, increases the thermal conductivity of the composite by 112%. Meanwhile, leveraging the photothermal effect of BQDO, this composite achieves a healing efficiency of 86.3% within 5 min under 365 nm UV irradiation. This research presents a durable, bio-based waterborne polyurethane for smart coatings that achieves rapid self-healing while maintaining environmental sustainability.
