Enhancing CO Selectivity in CO2 Photoreduction via Local Hydrophobic Modifications in S-Scheme Heterojunctions

Shicheng Liu,Xi Chen,Jing Xiang Ng,Xiong Liu,Qulan Zhou,Na Li,Shuzhou Li

To address the challenge of competitive H2O adsorption in photocatalytic CO2 reduction, localized hydrophobicity-modified S-scheme heterojunctions (WS/o-CN) were synthesized by combining WS2 and g-C3N4, which was modified by the addition of CTAB. Structural characterization and contact angle testing confirmed the formation of S-scheme heterojunctions and the specific structural role of CTAB. The optical, electrochemical properties, and gas adsorption capacity of the catalysts were analyzed, followed by in situ XPS and fs-TA tests to investigate the energy band structure and electron transfer paths. These results showed that localized hydrophobic modification reduces the surface proton concentration while maintaining efficient electron–hole separation in the S-scheme heterojunction. Testing the photocatalytic activity of WS/o-CN showed that the yield of CO reached 23.24 μmol g–1 h–1 with a high selectivity of 74.7%. Combined with molecular dynamics simulations and in situ DRIFTS tests, the results demonstrated that the introduction of the nonpolar long carbon chain CTAB effectively inhibits the adsorption of heterogeneous H2O on the catalyst surface while enhancing the maximum adsorption of CO2. The localized hydrophobicity reduces the proton concentration on the surface of g-C3N4, which in turn suppresses the absorption of photogenerated electrons by the HER reaction. This facilitates the efficient and selective conversion of CO2 to CO. This study highlights a surface engineering strategy that couples electronic structure optimization with interfacial wettability control, providing valuable insights into the design of selective and efficient photocatalysts for CO2-to-CO conversion.

In Situ Catalytic Hydrogenation of Biomass-Derived Methyl Levulinate to γ-Valerolactone in Methanol

Xing Tang,Zheng Li,Xianhai Zeng,Yetao Jiang,Shijie Liu,Tingzhou Lei,Yong Sun,Lu Lin

Graphical Two-faced copper: Methyl levulinate (ML) in the methanolysis products of cellulose is hydrogenated directly to γ-valerolactone (GVL) with methanol as the in situ hydrogen source over a nanocopper catalyst. The nanocopper catalyst plays a dual role in hydrogen production by methanol reforming and the subsequent hydrogenation of ML to GVL. In this work, the hydrocyclization of methyl levulinate (ML) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) was performed in MeOH over an in situ prepared nanocopper catalyst without external H 2 . This nanocopper catalyst served as a dual-functional catalyst for both hydrogen production by MeOH reforming and hydrogenation of ML. Nearly quantitative ML conversion with a GVL selectivity of 87.6 % was achieved at 240 °C in 1 h in MeOH under a nitrogen atmosphere. ML in the methanolysis products of cellulose also could be hydrogenated effectively to GVL over this nanocopper catalyst even in the presence of humins to give an ML conversion of 94.1 % and a GVL selectivity of 73.2 % at 240 °C in 4 h. The absorption behavior of humins on the surface of the nanocopper catalyst was observed, which resulted in a pronounced increase in the acidic sites of the nanocopper catalyst that facilitate ring-opening and the hydrocarboxylation/alkoxycarbonylation of GVL to byproducts.

Effect of degree of milling on the cadmium in vitro bioaccessibility in cooked rice

Lanlan Peng,Jiwang Chen,Lu Chen,Wenping Ding,Yonggui Gao,Yongning Wu,Youling L. Xiong

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in rice grain is common worldwide. This study investigated the effect of degree of milling (DM) on the reduction of Cd in cooked rice grain and porridge (rice-to-water ratios 1:1.6 and 1:10, respectively) and Cd in vitro bioaccessibility. Cd-contaminated rice grains with DMs of 20%, 15%, and 0% were cooked and then subjected to successive digestion in a gastrointestinal environment model. Simulated-digestion juices, including saliva, gastric juice, duodenal juice, and bile juice, were used. The degree of gelatinization of cooked rice was measured and the morphological characteristics of the grain were also examined. The results showed that the Cd in vitro bioaccessibility, although less than 50% in all samples, was gradually increased with an increase of DM. The detected Cd bioaccessibility was higher at half meals (reduced grain content) when compared with full meals (full grain content). As DM increased, the surface of cooked rice grain and porridge became smoother, and the amount of fiber, fat droplets, and starch granules were gradually decreased, whereas degree of gelatinization increased. The results indicate that DM affects the Cd in vitro bioaccessibility in cooked rice by altering the gelatinization of starch. Practical Application Degree of milling (DM) significantly influenced the in vitro bioaccessibility of cadmium (Cd) in cooked rice. This work may offer a potential solution to the rice grain with high Cd content because a limited DM will allow a low bioaccessibility of Cd.

Dynamic processes in Si and Si/C anodes in lithium-ion batteries during cycling

Zheng-Guang Hu,Zhi-Yuan Tan,Zhong Lin,Jun Chen,Fang Sun,Xuyao Tang,Rui-Ting Zheng,Yong-Chong Chen,Guo-An Cheng

Si is one of the most attractive anode materials because of its extremely high theoretical capacity. In this study, we find that the (111) plane of crystalline Si in the anode is still present after 100   cycles and infer that it is the intercalation site of Li + ions. We believe that Li + ions are inserted into the tetrahedral sites of crystalline Si, and the (111) plane of Si collapses; meanwhile, expansion parallel to 〈220〉 crystal orientation occurs. After full lithiation , the crystalline Si is converted to amorphous silicon . In a Si/ composite anode, although the addition of amorphous carbon may improve the cycling performance of Si anode, the activation process is prolonged as the amount of amorphous carbon increased. We determine that amorphous carbon may reduce the diffusion of Li + , which increases the overpotential and results in the lower formation of the saturated Li/Si alloy.

Engineering spatially proximate redox sites in Pd-In/TiO2 photocatalyst for selective CO2 photoreduction

Mazhar Khan,Zeeshan Akmal,Muhammad Tayyab,Seemal Mansoor,Muhammad Adnan Zeb,Amir Zeeshan,Muhammad Mubashir Khan,Ziwei Ye,Jinlong Zhang,Shiqun Wu,Lingzhi Wang

The synergistic integration of redox reactions in the photocatalyst poses a significant challenge for CO 2 photoreduction. Addressing this issue requires the design of spatially proximate redox sites while effectively suppressing charge recombination at these sites. This work offers a pioneering tactic that exploits synergistic redox reactions in close atomic proximity. The deliberate incorporation of palladium and indium into TiO 2 , where the Pd site assists in hole accumulation, accelerates water dissociation, and generates highly active H* species. Meanwhile, adjacent In sites capture photogenerated electrons from TiO 2 , producing reactive intermediates by activating CO 2 . The synergistic incorporation of Pd and In accelerates redox functionality, boosts charge carrier separation, and mitigates recombination at closely situated redox sites. Comprehensive characterizations, including in-situ XPS and FTIR, strengthen these innovative outcomes. The optimized Pd 0.5 -In 1 /TiO 2 photocatalyst achieves nearly 100 % selectivity of CH 4 with a production rate of 30.5 µmol g -1 h −1 without the use of any sacrificial reagent, demonstrating a 25-fold improvement compared to pristine TiO 2 . In-situ infrared spectroscopy further validates that the synergistic doping of metal ions promotes the formation of *CH 3 O and *CHO, key intermediates in the production of CH 4 . This investigation provides valuable insight into the intricate design of coupled redox active sites.

In vitro characterization of the ergothioneine oxidative catabolic pathway in Actinoplanes missouriensis ATCC 14538

Qiuni Long,Hua Huang,Xinshuai Zhang

l -ergothioneine is a naturally occurring histidine thio-derivative produced by certain bacterial and fungal species. Plants acquire ergothioneine from soil, while animals ingest it through their diets. Ergothioneine is widely acknowledged for its powerful antioxidant properties, capable of scavenging reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, thereby exhibiting promising applications across various industrial fields such as cosmetics, functional foods, and medicine. The catabolism of ergothioneine in the biosphere is quite diversified, in this study, we successfully analyzed and experimentally characterized an oxidative catabolic pathway of ergothioneine encoded by Actinoplanes missouriensis ATCC 14538. In this pathway, ergothioneine is firstly oxidized into ergothioneine sulfinate under the catalysis of a dioxygenase (PF05995). Then, ergothioneine sulfinate is converted into hercynine by releasing sulfite with an aminohydrolase (SSF51556). Finally, hercynine is transformed into urocanate, a known metabolite in histidine catabolism, by an aromatic amino acid lyase (PF00221). This catabolic pathway is primarily present in Actinobacteria, a group of soil microorganisms that may capable of recycling sulfur of ergothioneine through this pathway.

Catalytic Peroxymonosulfate activation via In-Situ ketone Derivatives: Unveiling dual kinetics in electrochemical degradation

Zhen Liu,Rong Liu,Siqi Chen,Mengyu Li,Yuhang Liu,Bangxing Ren,Huan He,Shuquan He,Xiaodi Duan,Yao Chen

This study reports for the first time the dual kinetics phenomenon triggered by the in situ generated ketone derivatives in the cathode chamber and reveals the mode of catalytic persulfate activation through electron exchange by the conversion of ketone functional groups to ketone derivatives. The experimental results show that the reaction rate constant in the rapid degradation stage in the cathode chamber (42.62 × 10 -2 min −1 ) is significantly higher than that in the induction stage (2.11 × 10 -2 min −1 ), achieving 98.96 % removal within 25 min. The intermediate validation experiments indicate that the in-situ generation of ketone-containing intermediates in the cathode chamber increases the steady-state concentration of reactive species (from 1.71 × 10 -10 to 1.08 × 10 -9 ML -1 ), which is the main reason for the increased reaction rate. The ketone capture experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the intermediates with ketone functional groups exchange electrons with persulfate ions under alkaline conditions and in the presence of an electric field, generating additional sulfate radicals and singlet oxygen. In the cathode chamber, the electrochemical activation of Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by ketones on intermediate products is expected to become an inherent catalytic technology for the selective oxidation of pollutants occurring in aquatic environments.

Herbicidal safening activity of Loropetalum chinense extract in alleviating pretilachlor-induced phytotoxicity in rice

Hongjun Chen,Xing Tang,Long Xiao,Xiu Liu,Chenzhong Jin

In this study, the crude extract of natural Loropetalum chinense (LoE) was prepared using a simple ethanol leaching approach. Preliminary evaluations of the safening effect of LoE in both agar and soil media demonstrated its ability to protect rice seedlings from damage induced by the herbicide pretilachlor (Pre). Specifically, treatment with LoE at 50 mg/L resulted in a 40.35% increase in root length and a 25.11% increase in plant height. In contrast, treatment at 100 mg/L led to a 36.85% increase in fresh weight, demonstrating effectiveness comparable to that of the commercial safener fenclorim (Fen). Moreover, compared to rice seedlings treated with Pre alone, LoE significantly increased the levels of glutathione (GSH) and enhanced the activities of several important enzymes: glutathione S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT). The mechanism of action for LoE appears to involve enhancing GST activity to accelerate the metabolism of Pre and improving herbicide tolerance by activating antioxidant enzymes. Overall, LoE shows promise as a potential eco-friendly, plant-derived herbicide safener candidate for pretilachlor. For practical commercial application, further efforts should focus on (i) clarifying the phytochemical profile of LoE extracts, and (ii) conducting in-depth assessments of LoE’s mechanisms of action, including studies on degradation kinetics and metabolite formation.

In Planta Detection of Phosphate Uptake in Chrysanthemum Using a Miniaturized Electrochemical Microprobe Array

Zhe Yu,Rui Tang,Minyu Wu,Wenke Zou,Muxuan Chang,Hongqin Mao,Jinyuan Liang,Xiaohui Xu,Cheng Zhang,Fadi Chen

Phosphorus is an essential macronutrient governing key physiological traits in chrysanthemum. However, phosphate nutrition is typically evaluated based on fertilizer input rather than direct in planta uptake, limiting management accuracy. Here, we develop a miniaturized electrochemical microprobe array for direct in planta detection of phosphate in chrysanthemum stem sap. The array integrates a cobalt-based working electrode fabricated via an electroplating-then-etching technique and a titanium-based iridium dioxide reference electrode, all optimized for miniaturization and biocompatibility. The array demonstrated a wide linear detection range (10−5 to 10−1mol/L), good sensitivity (41 mV/dec), and strong anti-interference performance in the presence of coexisting ions. Biocompatibility tests confirmed minimal disruption to plant growth after short- and long-term probe implantation. In planta measurements revealed spatial variation in phosphate distribution along the stem and dynamic uptake responses following fertilizer application. These findings highlight the potential of this microprobe array for precise nutrient uptake analysis and sustainable phosphorus management in horticultural systems.

Utilizing 3D DOSY NMR in the characterization of organic compounds in coal chemical wastewater

Hui Ma,Christian M. Pedersen,Qi Zhao,Shiyu Jia,Bin Yuan,Xianglin Hou,Yingxiong Wang

Coal chemical wastewater (CCW) with the features of high toxicity and poor biodegradability is a big issue in environmental remediation, posing a great threat to aquatic ecosystems and to human beings. Such complex molecular mixtures are notoriously difficult to characterize without initial physical separation. Herein, we present the 3D diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) analysis for CCW using DOSY-COSY and DOSY-HSQC methods, the advantages of this strategy have been demonstrated in the analysis of mixtures of aliphatic oxygenates and aromatic compounds, before being implemented on a genuine CCW sample in this study. The results showed that 3D DOSY is a robust and reliable tool for providing superior resolution and virtual separation of complex pollutants, and can be used as a general approach for structural elucidation.

In vivo evaluation of in situ polysaccharide based hydrogel for prevention of postoperative adhesion

Weiwei Lou,Hualin Zhang,Jianfeng Ma,Dafeng Zhang,Chuantong Liu,Siqian Wang,Zhennan Deng,Haihong Xu,Jinsong Liu

In this paper, the carboxymethyl chitosan/oxidized dextran hydrogel was developed and its potency application in the prevention of postoperative adhesion was investigated. The developed hydrogel showed porous and interconnected interior structure with pore size about 250   μm, which was sensitive to lysozymic solution (1.5   μg/ml) with almost complete degradation after 4 weeks of in vitro incubation. In vivo study suggested that the developed hydrogel showed the great capacity on the prevention of postoperative adhesions in rat model. According to the result of histopathological examination, it clearly showed that the mesothelial cell layer of abdominal wall and cecum were completely recovered after 7 days of surgery in 3% carboxymethyl chitosan/oxidized dextran hydrogel group, while obvious adhesion between abdominal wall and cecum was observed as treatment with saline solution or 3% carboxymethyl chitosan solution after 1 day of surgery. All these results suggested that the developed biodegradable hydrogel might have potential application in the prevention of postoperative adhesion.

Determination of Microcirculatory Changes and Angiogenesis in a Model of Frostbite Injury In Vivo

Ole Goertz,Stefan Baerreiter,Andrej Ring,Birger Jettkant,Tobias Hirsch,Adrien Daigeler,Hans U. Steinau,Stefan Langer

Background The breakdown of skin microcirculation and the leukocyte–endothelium interaction are assumed to play a key role in the pathophysiology of frostbite injuries. However, little is known as yet. The aim was to develop an in vivo frostbite model to monitor microcirculatory changes and angiogenesis after frostbite injury. Materials and Methods Deep partial thickness frostbite injuries were inflicted with a no-touch-technique to the ears of hairless mice ( n   =   9). To this end, a gas jet of nitrogen vapor (T   =   –195,8   ±   2.7°C) was delivered onto an area of 1.9   mm 2 for 1,5 s. Intravital fluorescent microscopy in combination with FITC-dextran and Rhodamin 6   G as fluorescent dyes was used to assess microcirculatory changes, leukocyte behavior, and angiogenesis during the 14 d of wound healing. Results The area of no perfusion decreased significantly over the observed period, and perfusion was almost completely restored due to angiogenesis by d 14 (day 1: 1.89 [mm 2 ]   ±   0.44SEM, d 14: 0.02   ±   0.01). No post-traumatic extension of the trauma could be observed. Edema formation increased significantly up to d 7. The number of adherent leukocytes showed a significant increase during the first 7 d. Functional vessel density showed a significant post-frostbite decrease to 60% of the baseline value. Conclusions This novel frostbite model provides a simple and nonetheless highly effective technique of creating locally limited reproducible frostbite injuries using a no touch technique. Tissue damage can be fully attributed to the thermal trauma, and the model allows repetitive intravital fluorescent microscopy of the microcirculation, leukocyte–endothelium interaction, and angiogenesis.
