Optimized Performance of Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes With Ti3C2Tx-Based Heterostructure Interlayers

Zhixing Chen,Xingyue Zhang,Yiting Wang,Xi Wang,Sheng Li,Yuanming Zhou,Fei Mei

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have considerable potential for high performance, but their practical applications are limited by surface defects and mismatches in energy levels, which require advanced interface materials to be resolved. In this study, an interfacial modification strategy using Ti 3 C 2 T x -based heterostructures was proposed. Graphene oxide (GO) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) were respectively composited with Ti 3 C 2 T x to construct Ti 3 C 2 T x -GO and Ti 3 C 2 T x -MoS 2 heterostructures, which were subsequently introduced as interlayers between the hole transport layer (HTL) and the emissive layer (EML) of PeLEDs. Moreover, the optoelectronic performance of the resulting PeLEDs was systematically investigated. A maximum luminance of 7314 cd/m 2 and a maximum current efficiency of 7.09 cd/A were achieved by PeLEDs when integrated with the Ti 3 C 2 T x -GO heterostructure. By contrast, those incorporating the Ti 3 C 2 T x -MoS 2 heterostructure exhibited a maximum luminance of 7888 cd/m 2 and a maximum current efficiency of 7.79 cd/A. This improvement could be attributed to the introduction of Ti 3 C 2 T x -based heterostructures, which served to both passivate surface defects in the perovskite EML and promotes charge transport. Overall, this study confirms the unique advantages of MXene-based materials in the regulation of perovskite optoelectronic devices, providing a theoretical and technical basis for their wider use in photovoltaics and optoelectronics.

Modular Opto-Magnetic Oscillators: Harnessing Light to Drive Versatile Materials and Functionalities

Ying-Hao Fu,Meng Li,Aniket Pal,Zi-Ting Wang,Tao Wang,Yu Wang,Wen Qiao,Xiaoshi Qian,Yan-Qing Lu

Self-sustained oscillations are fundamental to dynamic systems in nature, such as heartbeats, ocean waves, and firefly flashes. However, creating similar autonomous, out-of-equilibrium behaviors across diverse materials and structures in artificial settings remains challenging due to the lack of a universal, platform-independent control method. Here, we present an opto-magnetic feedback control strategy that achieves reliable self-excited oscillations through combined light, magnetic, and mechanical interactions based on a modular design approach. The dynamic, plug-and-play assembly of driving and deforming modules endows the platform with exceptional versatility in material type, structural setup, mechanical response, and functional use. Notably, this system can be tuned to produce continuous or intermittent self-oscillations, demonstrating its adaptability. We showcase the broad utility of the system by integrating optical modules for reconfigurable dynamic displays and wide-field-of-view light scanning, together with a thermo-mechano-electrical transduction module for high-efficiency energy harvesting. The proposed approach establishes a universal feedback pathway linking autonomous soft machines with various technological platforms, enabling on-demand adaptation across different application scenarios.

Visible-light-driven conversion of methane to methanol mediated by hydroxyl radical

Fengxing Yin,Anhua Huang,Bai Sun,Ruixiang Lu,Tatjana TrtiéPetrovié,Yun Zhang,Song Ling Wang

Selective oxidation of methane (CH 4 ) to value-added liquid methanol (CH 3 OH) drives the synthesis of chemicals and energy sustainability. It is extremely challenging to mimic in artificial reaction systems due to the inertness of CH 4 molecule and overoxidation to byproducts. In this work, we developed an effective and noble-metal-free iron-based catalyst (UNFe) that delivers exceptional performance of methane oxidation to methanol with visible light at room temperature. Specifically, the hydroxyl radical ( OH) generated through Fe III /Fe II cycling in UNFe catalyst is essential for promoting activity of methane oxidation. Importantly, the excellent generation yield and selectivity of methanol, up to 289 ± 10 μmol·g −1 and 96%, respectively. This report provides an effective and cost-effective catalyst system for enhanced oxidation of methane to methanol in a facile strategy.

Screening of Ruthenium Complexes as the Protein Light Switches for Protein Detection

Hao Liu,Qin-feng Xu,Zhao-zhao Zhang,Na-na Sun,Yan-ni Li,Wei Tantai,Chun-yang Zhang

Ruthenium(II)–dipyrido[3,2-a:2′,3′-c] phenazine (dppz) complexes (Ru–dppz complexes) can function as the molecular light switches for DNA assay, but their applications to protein detection remain a challenge because proteins possess more structural complexity than nucleic acids. Herein, we develop for the first time a computational virtual screening strategy to screen light switches for protein detection. We find that the binding affinity between Ru–dppz complexes and proteins relies on the structure and ratio of auxiliary and dppz ligands, and it plays a key role in light-switching performance. We discover that [Ru(dppz)2dip]2+ (dip = 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline) can function as the human serum albumin (HSA) light switch, and it exhibits strong hydrophobic and π-cation interactions with HSA to achieve a 280.0-fold luminescence enhancement, which is 2 orders of magnitude higher than the parent complex [Ru(dip)3]2+. Moreover, [Ru(dppz)2dip]2+ displays a rapid response time (<1 s), a large Stokes shift, and high sensitivity for HSA assay with a limit of detection of 0.0093 mg/L. We further develop a smartphone-integrated point-of-care device based on [Ru(dppz)2dip]2+ for rapid detection of HSA. Notably, this strategy can be extended to screen the β-lactoglobulin light switch that exhibits a 346.1-fold luminescence enhancement. This research provides a universal approach for the discovery of high-performance protein light switches with promising applications in biomedical research and clinical diagnostics.

Indium surface gradient doped ZnS for efficient photodegradation under visible-light irradiation

Shunhang Wei,Yihui Xu,Zebo Fang,Lirui Yu,Qifeng Liang,Shufang Chang,Jibao Wu

ZnS generally exhibits poor photocatalytic activity due to its wide bandgap and rapid carrier recombination. In this work, indium surface gradient doped ZnS was successfully synthesized through a chemical vapor strategy (In 2 O 3 served as the evaporation source). Indium surface doping not only expanded the absorption edge to the visible-light region by forming impurity levels, but also efficiently enhanced carrier separation and transfer ability (much superior to In element bulk doping). In addition, it resulted in a more negative conduction band position, which was conducive to the generation of superoxide radicals as the main active species through reduction reactions. Thereby, the optimal indium surface gradient doped ZnS achieved a degradation rate of ∼70% for levofloxacin within 1 h under visible-light irradiation, which was ∼3.3 times that of indium bulk doped ZnS. It also exhibited good dye degradation activity, and its degradation pathway for levofloxacin was also investigated. It is hoped that this work can provide a new perspective for the design of surface-doped photocatalysts. Download: Download high-res image (183KB) Download: Download full-size image

High-performance thermally-evaporated light-emitting diodes via one-step vapor purification

Zhang Xiang,Wu Yuanwu,Ou Jianfeng,Shen Zixi,Liu Nian,Alshahrani Thamraa,Mohd Yusoff Abd. Rashid bin,Tang Jiang,Luo Jiajun

Purity has been fundamental to the fabrication of high-performance semiconductors, spanning from precursors to reaction atmospheres. Emerging thermally evaporated perovskites involving precise control impose even stricter requirements on the purity of the vapor atmosphere. Compared to the purified solvent for the reaction atmosphere in the solution-based method, efficient and effective vapor purification remains unexplored. Here, we report one-step vapor purification for a pure atmosphere with less than one percent detrimental impurity. The in-situ residual gas analysis was employed to emphasize the complexity of the gas-phase composition and reveal the impurity reaction competition during the purification. The pre-control of the vapor atmosphere enabled a record external quantum efficiency over 20% for a thermally-evaporated perovskite light-emitting diode (PeLED) based on defect-suppressed FA x Cs 1- x PbBr 3 films. Moreover, the PeLED display panels exhibit over 5-fold and 2-fold magnification in operational and storage stability. The stability extension in OLEDs by this strategy demonstrates its universal effectiveness and commercialization potential for other types of thermally evaporated optoelectronic devices.

Photosensitization by [Mo3S13]2- nanocluster cocatalysts enabling visible-light photocatalytic H2 evolution

Chao Yang,Xiao-Li Pu,Qi Yin,Qing-Ping Huang,Lei Cai,Ping Liu,Zhi-Bin Fang

Elucidating properties of cocatalysts from all aspects endows them new roles as proactive regulators of light harvesting and reaction kinetics to promote the overall efficiency of photocatalysts. [Mo3S13]2- nanoclusters have served as one of the most efficient catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), while their underlying photo-responsive behaviors within hybrid photocatalyst systems remain unexplored. Herein, we unveil the visible-light sensitization effect of [Mo3S13]2- nanoclusters, in the mode of hot electron injection, that drive apparent and sustainable photocatalytic HER. This effect was demonstrated by loading [Mo3S13]2- nanoclusters on wide-bandgap nanosized ZnS host. Detailed characterizations further clarified the photosensitization of [Mo3S13]2- nanoclusters by revealing the dependence of HER activity on the enhanced visible light responsivity and the light-induced nanocluster-to-host electron transfer. This work not only showcases the dual function of the advanced [Mo3S13]2- nanocluster cocatalysts but also provides guidance for the discovery and understanding of more multifunctional materials opening new opportunities for efficient and multi-mode photocatalysis.

Site-defined Cu-O ensembles enable hydrogen-conserving light-driven ethane upgrading

Qingqing Zhang,Cong Liu,Chang Xu,Dingnan Huang,Cheng Xie,Zhandong Wang,Xiao-Ming Cao,Jinlong Zhang,Juying Lei,Ziwei Ye,Lingzhi Wang

Upgrading light alkanes to value-added olefins is a long-standing challenge, owing to the high stability of C–H bonds and the tendency for overoxidation at elevated temperatures. Here, we introduce a light-driven strategy for ethane dehydrogenation using Cu-doped TiO 2 , in which atomically dispersed Cu coordinated to bridging oxygen (O br–Cu ) creates well-defined [Cu–O] ensembles that orchestrate site-specific, stepwise C–H activation. Photogenerated holes localize at O br–Cu sites to initiate the first C–H cleavage, while adjacent Cu centers mediate β–H elimination and H 2 evolution. In contrast, minor β–H activation at O br–Ti sites generates *H species that cannot desorb due to a prohibitive coupling barrier with *H on O br–Cu , leading to Cu reduction and progressive deactivation. Co-feeding CO 2 restores the active Cu coordination environment and suppresses this deactivation process without perturbing the primary reaction pathway. This cooperative design achieves a C 2 H 4 production rate of 21.1 mmol g −1 h −1 with nearly stoichiometric H 2 evolution and an apparent quantum efficiency of 6.1% under 365 nm irradiation. These findings establish a site-defined, hydrogen-conserving route for photocatalytic alkane upgrading, offering a general blueprint for selective C–H bond transformations with long-term stability. Converting light alkanes into useful olefins is hard because strong bonds and heat drive overoxidation. This study uses a copper-doped titanium dioxide photocatalyst to steer bond breaking, yielding ethylene and hydrogen.

Second-Near-Infrared Light-Induced SnSe Nanosheets for Augmented Photonic Tumor Hyperthermia

Xiuying Chen,Haoqin Zheng,Lile Dong,Peng Zhang

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) poses a serious threat to the lives and health of patients, as traditional treatments are limited by psychological burden, systemic toxicity, or drug resistance. Photonic hyperthermia triggered by the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window is a promising minimally invasive strategy. Herein, we synthesized SnSe nanosheets via a simple, scalable method for NIR-II-triggered photonic tumor hyperthermia. SnSe nanosheets exhibited irregular lamellar structures with uniform Sn/Se distribution, favorable biocompatibility, and prominent photothermal performance under NIR-II irradiation. Under NIR-II irradiation, the SnSe+NIR-II group significantly suppressed tumor growth. This work offers a platform based on NIR-II light-induced photonic tumor hyperthermia, providing a minimally invasive strategy for TNBC treatment.

Vapor-deposited copper iodide cluster–based light-emitting diodes for pico-projector

Yiqi Luo,Longbo Yang,Xiang Zhang,Jianfeng Ou,Fang Wang,Jiang Tang,Jiajun Luo

Vapor-deposited metal halide clusters have demonstrated great potential for next-generation lighting and display applications. However, the direct synthesis-on-substrate of highly emissive materials via dry reaction technique is restricted by insufficient chemical reaction and precursor aggregation, leading to inferior device performance compared to their solution-processed counterparts. Here, we report a one-step vacuum synthesis deposition of copper(I) iodide clusters with near-unity photoluminescence quantum yields by engineering the stereohindrance of the organic ligand. When codeposited copper(I) iodide and 3,5-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl)pyridine (35DCzPPy) with minimal steric hindrance near the pyridine group, [35DCzPPy] 4 Cu 2 I 2 clusters are uniformly assembled without copper-copper aggregation. Consequently, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on clusters show a peak external quantum efficiency of 19.4%, a maximum luminance of 34,232 candelas per square meter, and a record operating T 50 lifetime of 4186 hours at 100 candelas per square meter. Moreover, we integrated the LEDs onto backplane drivers for active-matrix (AM) cluster LED (CLED) display panels, which enables the prototype of a high–dynamic-range pico-projector. Our results demonstrate the potential of vapor-deposited copper halide clusters for next-generation lighting and displays.

Light-Responsive Carbon Dots with Photochromism and Excitation-Dependent Room Temperature Phosphorescence

Xiaoqi Fang,Yuan Li,Junjie Cui,Zhenye Xu,Zifei Ge,Chengwei Hu,Khurram Abbas,Hong Bi

Light-responsive materials are of great interest for the development of next-generation multifunctional optoelectronic devices. However, the rational design of carbon dots (CDs) with well-defined multichannel emissive behavior remains challenging due to their complex structures and elusive luminescence mechanisms. In this work, photochromic CDs simultaneously exhibiting excitation-dependent room temperature phosphorescence (ED-RTP) were successfully prepared via a one-step microwave-assisted synthesis using 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic acid and poly- L -lysine as precursors. The resulting N-CDs display pronounced and reversible photochromic behavior under 365 nm UV irradiation, along with long-lived green and orange–red afterglow emissions upon switching off excitation at 295 and 365 nm, respectively. These unique dual-mode luminescence features are mainly attributed to the in situ generation of naphthalimide radical species, along with emissive centers associated with both the carbon core state and the surface state. Benefiting from this dual-mode luminescence behavior, which integrates photochromism and ED-RTP, the N-CDs show great potential for high-level security applications, including multi-state anti-counterfeiting and multidimensional information encryption. Overall, this work offers a feasible strategy for constructing multifunctional phosphorescent CD-based materials and broadens the scope of intelligent light-responsive systems for advanced security identification and artificial-intelligence-related applications.

Yb3+/Er3+ Co-doped CsPbCl3 nanocrystals for 1.54-μm light-emitting diodes

Xiaodong Zhang,Lianrong Zhang,Kaiming Chen,Yitao Wang,Lilong Zhang,Linlin Zhang

Lanthanide-doped perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have emerged as attractive emitters operating at telecommunication wavelengths. Nevertheless, achieving efficient lanthanide incorporation generally demands high synthesis temperatures (>240 °C), which complicates control over NC size and uniformity. In this work, we revealed that by replacing excess Pb 2+ with lanthanide halides, Ostwald ripening was effectively suppressed, resulting in precise size tuning and enhanced doping. This versatile lanthanide halide–mediated strategy yields highly monodisperse Yb/Er-codoped CsPbCl 3 NCs that exhibit a record photoluminescence quantum yield (21.2%) at 1.54 μm among colloidal perovskite systems. A light-emitting diode (PeLED) was fabricated, showing nearly pure 1.54 μm emission, achieving the peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 0.464% under low driving voltage of 2.7 V. In conclusion, the development of 1.54-μm Er-PeLEDs presents new prospects for integrated light sources.
