Alkaline water/seawater electrolysis has drawn broad concern for green hydrogen production. Design and development of efficient, stable, and inexpensive bifunctional catalysts is one great bottleneck to overall alkaline water/seawater splitting. Herein, high-valence Mo, Mn co-doped amorphous bimetallic sulfide (MoMn-NiCoS) was prepared by facile pulse electrodeposition technology. High-valence Mo, Mn significantly enhanced the bifunctional catalytic performances for elevated reaction kinetics and rapid charge transfer with optimal electron structure modulation. Therefore, MoMn-NiCoS exhibited excellent bifunctional performances with low overpotentials of 70/69/73 mV and 247/226/282 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline water/simulated seawater/natural seawater , respectively. Besides, MoMn-NiCoS||MoMn-NiCoS electrolyzers required small cell voltages of 1.57/1.56/1.62 V to reach 10 mA cm −2 for overall alkaline water/simulated seawater/natural seawater splitting. Moreover, MoMn-NiCoS performed prominent stability during the 50 h-chronopotentiometry test at 50 mA cm −2 for the electrolyzer. Meanwhile, NiCo-based hydroxides/oxyhydroxides and sulfate ions were formed for electrocatalyst surface reconstruction during catalytic process, which were beneficial to the excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic activities and chloride repulsion. No hypochlorite formation verified the superior chloride oxidation inhibition of MoMn-NiCoS. The excellent catalytic performances of MoMn-NiCoS were attributed to the high-valence dual-cation doping, amorphous structure, electron structure modulation, synergetic effect, and surface reconstruction. This work provided an insightful strategy for the design and development of high-efficiency, stable, and cost-effective bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall alkaline water/seawater electrolysis.

Crystal structure and surface modulation of Co 3 O 4 catalyst holds great promise for the improvement of catalytic performance for propane oxidation. In this study, Mn doping in Co 3 O 4 was first adapted to introduce crystal defects. And acid etching was then used to orchestrate the surface properties of Mn doped Co 3 O 4 . The combination of both Mn doping and acid etching resulted in a distorted crystal structure, which significantly activates the Co-O bonds, obviously increasing the exposed active oxygen and enhancing the intrinsic oxidation ability. Consequently, as a catalyst for propane oxidation, Mn-Co 3 O 4 -H facilitates the acetate intermediate generation and its decomposition, resulting in an excellent oxidation activity with propane conversion rate 3.8 times higher than that of the pristine Co 3 O 4 catalyst at reaction temperature of 195 °C. Meanwhile, the catalyst demonstrates a stable hydrothermal performance with negligible deactivation during 30 h on-stream test. This study set an important paradigm for the structure and surface manipulation of Co 3 O 4 catalyst for efficient propane oxidation.

The advancement of large-scale and environmentally-friendly solid-state synthesis methods is of paramount importance for the production of precipitated catalysts, notably Fe-based catalysts utilized in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). In this study, we present an innovative solvent-independent, wastewater-free solid-state approach for the synthesis of highly efficient Fe/ZrO 2 catalysts, elucidating the mechanisms of promotion within this specific methodology. The prepared catalysts underwent rigorous evaluation under industrially-relevant FTS conditions (230–270 °C, 20 bar, and WHSV = 5400 mL/(g cat ⋅h)). A comprehensive suite of characterization techniques was employed to establish the intricate interplay between catalytic activity and structural attributes. We meticulously examined the impact of Na as an alkali promoter and the role of transition metals (Cu and Mn) in enhancing FTS catalytic performance. The catalytic outcomes obtained clearly demonstrate the pivotal role of the synergistic interaction between Mn and Na within the Na-Mn-Fe/ZrO 2 catalyst system in driving the FTS reaction. This synergism significantly enhances FTS performance, yielding an impressive CO conversion rate (89.91 %) while maintaining low selectivity to CH 4 (7.75 %). The incorporation of Mn and Na into the catalyst matrix enhances the dispersion of Fe 2 O 3 , thereby improving the reducibility of Mn/Fe oxides and elevating the electron density on the catalyst surface. These factors facilitate the formation of active Hägg iron carbide (χ-Fe 5 C 2 ), stimulating chain propagation and ultimately leading to the generation of valuable C 5+ hydrocarbon products, which underscores its potential as an optimal candidate for future industrial applications in Fe-based Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.

Magnetic induction hyperthermia with self-regulated temperature is an advanced technology capable of automatically regulating hyperthermia temperature through a magnetic phase transition, which has a promising application prospect. This paper investigated the effects of Al 3+ doping on the magnetic properties and Curie temperature of Zn-Mn ferrite. The specific saturation magnetization and Curie temperatures of Zn 0.5 Mn 0.5 Al x Fe 2-x O 4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.6) nanoparticles decrease linearly with increment of Al 3+ content. The magnetic heating experiments exhibit that the synthesized nanoparticles can raise the temperature of agar phantom to above 42 °C and self-regulate the temperature below their Curie temperatures, demonstrating their potential for self-regulated temperature hyperthermia. Additionally, in vitro cell experiments confirm the nanoparticles’ good biocompatibility.

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction technology provides a promising approach to solve the energy and environmental problems. In this work, flower-like MnIn 2 S 4 microspheres were prepared by solvothermal method , and then calcined in air to obtain flower-like Mn doped In 2 O 3 (Mn:In 2 O 3 ) microspheres . Subsequently, Ni doped CdS (Cd 1-x Ni x S) nanocrystals were prepared and compounded with Mn doped In 2 O 3 to obtain Cd 1-x Ni x S/Mn:In 2 O 3 composite photocatalysts . It was found that Cd 0 · 96 Ni 0 · 04 S/Mn:In 2 O 3 had the best photocatalytic CO 2 reduction activity. The CO yield reached to 43.40 μmol g −1 in 3 h. The improved CO 2 reduction property were attributed to not only the increased light absorption capacity and the expanded surface area but also the enhanced charge separation efficiency that caused by the construction of Z-scheme heterostructure . The design and preparation of high-efficiency photocatalyst would be an effective way to promote the development of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction.

The metal-substituted goethite with addition of oxidants can effectively promote the degradation of antibiotics, but the usage of external agents restricts its application in in-situ remediation of antibiotic pollution. In this study, the metal-substituted goethites were prepared through co-precipitation method to investigate the effects of using manganese (Mn) or zinc (Zn) substitution alone on tetracycline (TC) degradation, combining with microscopic characterization and electrochemical methods. The results showed that the degradation rate constants of the first stage on Mn or Zn-substituted goethite were 0.299 h -1 and 0.498 h -1 , respectively, which were about 2 and 4 times of the pristine goethite (0.117 h -1 ). In the pH range of 4.0–9.0, Mn or Zn substitution significantly promoted TC degradation. Free and non-free radical pathways existed in the process of TC degradation by Mn or Zn-substituted goethite. The active site change and enhanced electron transfer ability were the main reasons for promoting degradation. Mn or Zn substitution increased oxygen vacancy (OV) content and promoted the electron transfer between TC and goethite. In Zn-substituted goethite, the coupling of OV and electron transfer produced free radicals, and in Mn-substituted goethite, the redox reaction induced mainly by electron transfer produces free radicals. This study reveals a new mechanism of efficient degradation of TC by iron minerals without the need for external oxidants, and the materials studied can be used for in-situ remediation of antibiotic contaminated groundwater.

The low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of CsPbCl 3 perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) poses a significant challenge to their application as ion detection probes. To address this issue, we enhanced the PLQY of CsPbCl 3 PQDs through Mn doping. These enhanced PQDs were then employed as probes for the highly sensitive detection of Cu 2+ ions and temperature. CsPbCl 3 :Mn PQDs with varying Mn/Pb ratios were synthesized via hot injection. The Mn doping introduced an emission band near 600 nm, with intensity increasing alongside doping concentration. At an Mn/Pb ratio of 2.0, the PLQY was enhanced nearly tenfold, from 5.46 % for undoped CsPbCl 3 to 52.48 % for CsPbCl 3 :Mn. CsPbCl 3 :Mn PQDs with the highest PLQY were employed as luminescent probes, utilizing the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique for copper detection and temperature sensing. The experimental results demonstrated a linear relationship between the FIR and Cu 2+ concentration over the range of 22.12 nM–1600 nM, with 22.12 nM being the calculated limit of detection. Analysis of the emission spectra and fluorescence lifetimes at varying Cu 2+ concentrations revealed that electron transfer from CsPbCl 3 to Cu 2+ induced fluorescence quenching. CsPbCl 3 :Mn exhibits a high relative sensitivity of 15.89 % K −1 at 298 K, along with excellent reversibility. These findings highlight the potential application of CsPbCl 3 :Mn PQDs in both temperature sensing and the analysis of wear metals in engine lubricating oils.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOF) have been wildly synthesised and studied as electrode materials for supercapacitors, and bimetallic MOF of Ni and Co has been broadly studied to enhance both specific capacitance and stability of supercapacitors. Herein, a best performance (about 320 F/g) of Ni–Co bimetallic MOF was found in a uniform preparation condition by adjusting the ratio of Ni to Co. Then tiny third metal ion was introduced, and we found that the morphology of material has a significant change on the original basis. Furthermore, certain ions (Zn, Fe, Mn) introduced make a huge improvement in capacitance based on Ni–Co MOF of 320 F/g. The result shows that Zn–Ni–Co MOF, Fe–Ni–Co MOF and Mn–Ni–Co MOF perform specific capacitance of 1135 F/g, 870 F/g and 760F/g at 1 A/g, respectively. Meanwhile, the asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) was constructed by Zn–Ni–Co MOF as positive electrode and active carbon (AC) as negative electrode. The Zn–Ni–Co MOF//AC ASC possesses a energy density of 58 Wh/kg at a power density of 775 W/kg. This research provides a new methods to regulate the morphology of MOF and a novel viewpoint for assembling high-performance, low-price, and eco-friendly green energy storage devices.

Although permanganate activation by sodium sulfite (Mn(VII)/Na 2 SO 3 ) has shown great potential for rapid abatement of organic contaminants , the limited reactivity under alkaline conditions and undesirable Mn residual may prevent its widespread application. To solve these challenges, calcium sulfite (CaSO 3 ) was employed as a slow-release source of SO 3 2− /HSO 3 − (S(IV)) to activate Mn(VII) in this study. It was found that the application of CaSO 3 solid could extend the effective working pH range of Mn(VII)/S(IV) from ≤7.0 to ≤9.0. Moreover, due to the enhanced precipitation of MnO 2 with the presence of Ca 2+ , very low Mn residual (<0.05 mg/L) was achieved in Mn(VII)/CaSO 3 system. Mn(VII)/CaSO 3 system is a unique two-stage oxidation process in terms of reaction kinetics and reactive oxidants. Specifically, Mn(VII) was rapidly consumed and reactive Mn intermediates (e.g., Mn(VI), Mn(V)), SO 4 •− , and HO • were produced in the first stage. However, the second stage was governed by the interaction between MnO 2 and S(IV), with SO 4 •− and HO • serving as the dominant reactive oxidants. Taking advantage of an automatic titrator, excess S(IV) was found to greatly quench the generated radicals, whereas it did not cause a significant consumption of reactive Mn species. All these results improved our understanding of the Mn(VII)/S(IV) process and could thus facilitate its application.

The intrinsic property of WO 3 determines that it has stronger interaction with triethylamine (TEA), which makes the WO 3 sensing material to be an ideal TEA detector. In order to further improve the sensing performance of WO 3 gas sensors, a novel synthesis and modification method was proposed to fabricate Mn-doped WO 3 nanostructure. The unique structure of Mn/WO 3 was assembled by ultrathin nanosheets into hierarchical hollow fibers. Compared with the pristine WO 3 with similar structure, the Mn/WO 3 gas sensor shows greatly enhanced TEA sensing properties. The improvement of gas sensing performance of Mn/WO 3 should be due to the increase of oxygen vacancies and surface adsorbed oxygen after doping of Mn. Under the optimized preparing conditions, the Mn/WO 3 -500 sensor exhibits high sensing response (32 towards 50 ppm TEA), excellent selectivity, fast response-recovery speed and reliable repeatability and long-term stability at its optimal working temperature of 200 ℃. The superior TEA sensing performance of the Mn/WO 3 -500 sensor opens the door for potential applications in TEA recognition and detection.

The Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 ) y (Zr x Ti 1- x )O 3 ternary piezoelectric ceramics have a high Curie temperature ( T c > 300 °C). However, their piezoelectric properties are low, which limits their sensitivity in practical applications. In this work, MnCO 3 is added to the Pb 0.94 Sr 0.06 (Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 ) 0.2 (Zr 0.388 Ti 0.412 )O 3 piezoelectric matrix to enhance the piezoelectric response. Through the synergistic effect of optimizing morphotropic phase boundary, facilitating grain growth, reducing oxygen vacancy concentration, impressively excellent piezoelectric properties with piezoelectric coefficient d 33 = 708 pC/N, electromechanical coupling factor k p = 74 % and dielectric constant ε r = 3558 are obtained when MnCO 3 is added at 0.4 wt percent relative to the matrix. In the meantime, the composition possesses a high T c = 292 °C, and an exceptional temperature insensitivity ( d 33 with variations less than 10 % during the measurement temperature from 25 °C to 250 °C). Finally, when fabricated into piezoelectric transducers, the optimized component produces a significant voltage output, this indicates its outstanding application potential. This work demonstrates that Mn additives can significantly enhance the overall electrical properties of lead-based piezoelectric ceramics and accelerate their practical application.

Graphical This study develops a solid-state thermal (SST) synthesis method for the one-step preparation of MOF-derived Mn x @NC catalysts. Among these, the optimal catalyst (Mn 2.5 @NC) exhibits excellent activity, remarkable stability, and good recyclability for HMF oxidation to FDCA, achieving an FDCA yield of 94 % within 4 h at room temperature and maintaining its catalytic performance for five cycles without activity decay. Transforming the bio-based 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into its oxidation product 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) offers an attractive route for synthesizing bioplastic monomers. However, significant challenges remain in developing efficient and stable non-precious metal catalysts. Here, we employed a solid-state thermal synthesis (SST) method to design and synthesize a series of metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived metal-nitrogen-carbon (M@NC) materials with gradient metal contents and low metal loadings, labeled as Mn x @NC, for converting HMF into FDCA through oxidation. Further investigations revealed that the amount of metal doping significantly influenced the catalyst structure, particularly in terms of defect quantity and specific surface area. The optimal catalyst, Mn 2.5 @NC, exhibited the largest specific surface area and the highest number of defects, achieving a 94 % FDCA yield within 4 h. Experimental results demonstrated that the recovered catalyst could be reintroduced into the reaction system and maintained selectivity comparable to that of the fresh catalyst for at least five cycles. Moreover, various characterizations of both fresh and recovered catalysts confirmed the great stability of Mn 2.5 @NC. This study provides advanced insights into the effective catalytic conversion of HMF to FDCA and highlights the importance of structural design and regulation in optimizing M@NC catalysts.
