Highly active MoS2 catalysts were developed by tuning the precursors and synthesis solvents to upgrade unconventional feedstocks into light fuels through the slurry-phase hydrogenation reaction. A highly dispersed quasi-single-layer (QSL) MoS2 nanocatalyst has been synthesized by the solvothermal method with l-cysteine and ethylene glycol as the S precursor and solvent, respectively. The QSL MoS2 nanocatalyst demonstrates extremely high selectivity to octahydroanthracene of 83.1% and hydrogenation percentage of 54.0% for catalytic anthracene hydrogenation, which are, respectively, 11.4 times and 2.6 times as high as those of bulk MoS2 catalysts. Moreover, the QSL MoS2 nanocatalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activities and high catalytic versatility for the slurry-phase hydrogenation of various unconventional feedstocks. The contents of light fractions (gas oil and diesel oil) in the hydrogenation products of coal tar and heavy crude oils from Boscana and Venezuela with the QSL MoS2 nanocatalyst are as high as 80%, and the conversion of asphaltene hydrogenation can reach much higher than 90%. The excellent catalytic activity of the QSL MoS2 nanocatalyst may result from its nanostructures including a grain size of 20–30 nm, QSLs of less than 3, and a slab length of 3–7 nm, which benefits to highly expose catalytic active sites and improve its dispersion in the slurry-phase hydrogenation reaction system. This synthesis method can be extended to the design of QSL two-dimensional materials with highly exposed active sites for various catalytic reactions.

Li–S battery has high theoretical specific capacity and specific energy, but the shuttle effect challenges its commercial application. So many composite materials had been prepared to conquer it. In this research, MCNT/MoS2/S composite and MCNT/MoS2/S composite cathode were prepared respectively by a facile hydrothermal method and by melt diffusion method. MoS2 and MCNT showed uniformly combined together by SEM and TEM. The electrochemical properties of the MCNT/MoS2/S cathode were carried out on a Gamry electrochemical workstation. The initial capacity arrive 820 mAh·g−1 at 0.1 C, and specific capacities up to ∼460 mAh·g−1 over more than 300 cycles at 0.5 C. The improvement of electrochemical performance due to MoS2 strongly adsorbing polysulfide and the conductivity network of MCNT.

The establishment of analytical methods with superior sensitivity, selectivity, accuracy, and stability, as well as ultralow detection limits inspired a broad range of research enthusiasm. In this work, we developed an electrochemical method for detecting mercury ions using metallic 1T-MoS 2 nanosheets, which was firstly fabricated using phase engineering strategy and then exfoliated. Remarkably promoted sensitivity and significantly lowered limits of detection (LODs) were achieved due to the dramatically reduced charge transfer resistance of 1T-MoS 2 nanosheets compared with that of the semiconducting 2H-MoS 2 nanoflakes. After electrode modification and optimization, working curves for both two materials were obtained. Astonishingly, the LODs of 1T-MoS 2 modified glassy carbon electrodes (GCEs) was calculated to be 1.54 × 10 −19 M (D L = 3σ/k), which was six orders of magnitude lower than that of 2H-MoS 2 (1.46 × 10 −13 M). And 1T-MoS 2 -based electrochemical detection method also exhibited superior selectivity towards other ten ions selected because of the high affinity between Hg and S. The stability and reproducibility of the new method was impressive as well, and the recovery rates using spiked real water samples were all in the range of 99.8–101.2% due to the superb sensitivity. All results proved that the metallic 1T-MoS 2 nanosheets a promising material for electrochemical detection of mercury ions.

It is well recognized that advanced microwave absorbers (MAs) with the characteristics of light weight, good stability, strong absorption, thin thickness and wide absorption bandwidth are highly desirable. In this study, we reported a simple hydrothermal route to synthesize core@shell structure CNTs@MoS 2 nanocomposites (NCs), which were designed as novel and outstanding MAs. By controlling the amounts of initial Mo and S sources, different MoS 2 contents of CNTs@MoS 2 NCs were selectively produced. The results showed that the as-prepared CNTs@MoS 2 NCs displayed the excellent microwave absorption properties (MAPs) owing to their synergetic effect and unique nanoflower morphology of MoS 2 , and their comprehensive MAPs could be improved significantly by optimizing the MoS 2 contents and the filler loading. Impressively, when the filler loading is 40 wt%, the as-prepared CNTs@MoS 2 sample could simultaneously displayed the minimal reflection loss value of −54.75 dB with the very thin matching thickness of 1.49 mm, and effective absorption bandwidth (~4.0 GHz) at the low thicknesses of 1.26 mm. Taking into account of low cost and high stability, one could find that the designed CNTs@MoS 2 displayed very extraordinary comprehensive MAPs, which provided a reliable strategy to design high-performance MAs.

Engineering sulfur vacancies in the basal plane of MoS 2 is an effective method to enhance its catalytic activity. However, the traditional methods are only effective for multilayer or monolayer MoS 2 supported on the substrate (such as Si/SiO wafer or carbon paper), which are not applied in bulk or commercial MoS 2 . In this work, we developed a simple and general chemical reduction method for engineering S-vacancies in the MoS 2 basal plane and additional active edge sites, which can be exploited to improve the HER catalytic performance of MoS 2 . The optimized MoS 2 nanosheets with S-vacancies exhibit excellent HER activity with a small overpotential of 190 mV at large density of 10 mA/cm 2 and a low Tafel slope of 54 mV decade −1 . Moreover, prominent electrochemical durability was also achieved. This finding proposes an effective strategy to fabricating S-vacancies for activating basal plane of 2D transition metal chalcogenides materials.

Capacitive deionization (CDI) has shown great promise in desalinating salt water; however, conventional CDI electrode materials suffer from low specific salt capacity and charge efficiency owing to the co-ion expulsion effect. Herein, using expanded MoS2 nanosheets supported by reduced graphene oxide (MoS2/rGO) as the intercalation electrode, we develop a hybrid CDI system that shows a battery-like behavior and can reversibly store cations through the intercalation mechanism. The incorporation of rGO in the composite not only affords a conductive support and ensures fast electron transfer but also, more importantly, widens the MoS2 interlayer spacing from 0.62 to 0.73 nm. The expanded MoS2 interlayer facilitates the diffusion of cations and decreases the internal strain during the intercalation/de-intercalation process. Also, it endows MoS2/rGO with more accessible sites and space for cations in the electrolyte. Benefiting from the desirable structure features, the hybrid CDI system delivers a remarkable specific salt capacity of 34.20 mg g–1 and a charge efficiency as high as 97% in 300 mg L–1 sodium chloride aqueous solution. The MoS2/rGO involved in the CDI system for the adsorption of other metal ions is also verified, indicating its potential applications for the removal of various metal ions in brackish water and seawater.

Metallic 1T-phase MoS2is a newly emerging and attractive catalyst since it has more available active sites and high carrier mobility in comparison with its widely used counterpart of semiconducting 2H-MoS2. Herein, 1T/2H-MoS2(N) (N: MoO3nanowires were used to prepare 1T/2H-MoS2) was synthesized by using molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) nanowires as the starting material and applied in the photodegradation of antibiotic residue in water. Enhanced photocatalytic performance was observed on the obtained 1T/2H-MoS2(N), which was 2.8 and 1.3 times higher than those on 1T/2H-MoS2(P) (P: commercial MoO3powder was used to prepare 1T/2H-MoS2) and 2H-MoS2, respectively. The active component responsible for the photodegradation was detected and a reaction mechanism is proposed.Keywords:1T/2H-MoS2composite;molybdenum trioxide nanowires;photodegradation of antibiotic residue;hydrothermal method

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is an efficient approach to prepare coatings on complex cutting tools. However, MoS 2 with self-lubrication ability and excellent tribological properties fabricated by CVD have been rarely reported in literature. The aim of this study was to deposit pure MoS 2 coatings and yttrium (Y) doped MoS 2 (Y/MoS 2 ) composite coatings on cemented carbide blades coated with titanium nitride by CVD. The structural and mechanical properties of the coatings were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nanoindentation , respectively. The results demonstrated that the microstructure of Y/MoS 2 composite coatings was denser than that of the pure MoS 2 coating. The hardness and the adhesional properties were significantly enhanced for the Y/MoS 2 composite coatings. The tribological performance of the as-deposited coatings were investigated under atmospheric environment. Y/MoS 2 compostite coatings demonstrated an enhanced tribological performance with a stable and low coefficient of friction (COF) over the entire sliding time. In contrast, the COF of pure MoS 2 coating dramatically increased to value above 0.3 after a sliding time of only 30 min. Additionally, the Y/MoS 2 composite coatings showed a decreased wear rate (8.36 ± 0.29 × 10 −7 mm 3 /Nm) compared to the pure MoS 2 coatings (3.41 ± 0.48 × 10 −5 mm 3 /Nm) thus reflecting an improvement by two order of magnitude.

Structure and morphology play a crucial role in improving the performance of catalysts. In this work, we prepared core-shell structured CoS 2 @MoS 2 nanoparticles by a two-step hydrothermal method . The unique electrochemical properties of the core-shell CoS 2 @MoS 2 nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution centered at 20–30 nm were demonstrated. An excitation-dependent photoluminescence emission was observed for the core-shell CoS 2 @MoS 2 nanoparticles. These core-shell CoS 2 @MoS 2 nanoparticles showed an excellent catalytic activity towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), indicated by the onset potential of 190 mV ( vs. RHE), the overpotential of 276 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and the Tafel slope of 60 mV·dec −1 . Therefore, the developed core-shell CoS 2 @MoS 2 nanoparticles can be applied for HER for their excellent catalytic activities.

Transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have attracted a lot of attention due to their electronic, optical, mechanical, and catalytic properties. In addition, TMDCs possess rich redox chemistry that enables the decoration of metal nanoparticles directly on their surfaces. In this paper, MnO2/MoS2 nanocomplexes were obtained by the spontaneous reduction of KMnO4 with MoS2 QDs as the reductive agent. The formed MnO2/MoS2 nanocomplexes exhibited activated fluorescence and MR imaging signal in the presence of glutathione (GSH). After conjugation with an AS1411 aptamer, specific in vivo MR imaging and fluorescence labeling of the 786-O tumor cells were realized, showing their promising potential for biomedical applications.

Solvent resistant nanofiltration membranes with both improved permeability and long-term stability are in desperate demand for organic solvent recovery. In this study, a high-performance molybdenum sulfide (MoS 2 )-poly-trimethylsilylpropyne (PTMSP) nanocomposite membrane was prepared on polysulfone (PSf) through a facile solution casting method, which was used for efficient organic solvent recovery. Two-dimensional (2D) MoS 2 was employed to construct interlayer channels that facilitated the passage of solvents and blocked small molecule solutes. Compared with the pristine PTMSP membrane, the methanol permeance of modified membrane increased by 47% (5.89 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ) while remaining the retention rate of RB of 97.14%. The obtained membrane exhibited superior mechanical strength as well as excellent stability. Moreover, the resultant membrane also showed more precise molecular sieving capability than most reported polymer membranes. This work demonstrated that incorporating 2D MoS 2 nanosheets into PTMSP polymer is a promising method to obtain organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes with excellent separation performance and favorable long-term stability.

Antibiotics, such as tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), are persistent pollutants in the environment due to their difficult degradation properties. In this study, a MoS2/ZnO heterostructure nanocomposite was synthesized and evaluated for its photocatalytic performance in degrading TC under simulated sunlight irradiation. The degradation rate of TC in the MoS2/ZnO/PMS system reached 99.8% after 30 min, surpassing the rates observed in both ZnO and MoS2/ZnO systems. The presence of active species, including superoxide radicals (˙O2−), hydroxyl radicals (˙OH), sulfate (SO4˙−) and singlet oxygen (1O2), was confirmed through trapping experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (ESR) analysis. The MoS2/ZnO heterostructure effectively suppressed the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, leading to improved photocatalytic efficiency. The results demonstrate the potential of the MoS2/ZnO/PMS system as a low cost and efficient method for the removal of TC from water. This study contributes to the development of photocatalytic materials for the degradation of persistent organic pollutants in aqueous environments.
