A novel drug-delivery nanosystem based on near-infrared (NIR) light-degradable antimony nanoparticles (AMNP) have been developed for synergistic chemo–phototherapy in vitro. The monodispersed AMNP were synthesized by using a simple and cost-effective method. Positively charged doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) was loaded onto the negatively charged surface of AMNP via electrostatic interaction and finally modified by polyacrylic acid (PAA) to enhance biocompatibility. Under NIR (808 nm) laser irradiation of the AMNP–DOX–PAA nanosystem, not only was high photothermal conversion efficiency of AMNP achieved but also pH-dependent DOX release was enhanced due to laser-induced hyperthermia. As a consequence, almost all of the HeLa cells (around 97%) were killed because of the combined effects of chemotherapy and photothermal therapy. More interestingly, AMNP showed very fast (about 10 min) laser-induced degradation that may help to minimize long-term toxicity after therapy by using same-wavelength NIR laser irradiation (808 nm). Computational total energy calculations and molecular dynamics simulations based on density functional theory (DFT) suggest that the NIR laser irradiation induces a photothermally activated reaction on the surface of AMNP in water, which can lead to surface degradation via the formation of Sb–H bonds first and then Sb–OH bonds upon further increase of temperature. This work demonstrates a simple platform that has potential applications for synergistic and highly effective chemo–photothermal therapy based on photodegradable nanoparticles.

Compared with visible fluorescence carbon dots (CDs), the multi-emission (visible and near infrared) fluorescence CDs based platform (V-N Platform) with blood-brain barrier penetration, real-time brain imaging and drug loading capacities, is of great significance. Herein, a novel type of multi-emission fluorescence CDs (GT) was created to penetrate BBB for brain imaging and local drug delivery, which was synthesized by hydrothermal method, using endogenous l -tryptophan and d -glucose. The capability for in vitro imaging was verified through the experiments on cell imaging. Moreover, the ability of in vivo imaging, especially for brain imaging, was confirmed by experiments in mice and zebrafish. In addition, the in vitro and in vivo experiments preliminarily confirmed its potential to act as a drug delivery platform. This V-N Platform (GT) will be expected to have a significant impact on the researches for CDs and the theranostics of brain diseases.

Surgical excision, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy are the main approaches used for treating melanoma. Unfortunately, surgical excision usually inevitably causes large area skin defects. In addition, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are often accompanied by adverse reactions and multi-drug resistance. To overcome these limitations, a near-infrared (NIR)- and pH-responsive injectable nanocomposite hydrogel was developed using sodium alginate- graft -dopamine (SD) and biomimetic polydopamine-Fe(III)-doxorubicin nanoparticles (PFD NPs) for treating melanoma and promoting skin regeneration. Firstly, the SD/PFD hydrogel can precisely deliver anti-cancer agents to the tumor site to reduce its loss and off-target toxicity. Then, PFD can convert light into heat energy under NIR irradiation to kill cancer cells. Meanwhile, doxorubicin can be administered continuously and controllably by NIR- and pH-responsive. Additionally, the SD/PFD hydrogel can also relieve tumor hypoxia by decomposing endogenous hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) into oxygen (O 2 ). Therefore, photothermal, chemotherapy, and nanozyme synergetic therapy resulted in the tumor suppression. Specifically, the SA-based hydrogel can kill bacteria, scavenge reactive oxygen species , promote the proliferation and migration of cells, and significantly accelerate skin regeneration. Therefore, this study provides a safe and effective strategy for melanoma treatment and wound repair.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by joint inflammation. Macrophages accelerate the pathological process of RA through the continuous cell accumulation and secretion of cytokines. Therefore, multiscale visualization of macrophages is of great significance for the early diagnosis of RA. In this work, folate receptor-targeted Cptnc-4F nanoprobes, named FA-CF-NPs, are developed for dual-model molecular imaging of macrophages in RA mouse models. FA-CF-NPs exhibit complementary imaging advantages with high fluorescence sensitivity and resolution in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II) and promising photoacoustic (PA) imaging contrast with deep tissue penetration. The high affinity of the folate ligand on the surface of FA-CF-NPs to macrophages with overexpressed folate receptors ensures the specific targeting function of the nanoprobes for imaging in vivo. FA-CF-NPs are employed to achieve NIR-II fluorescence imaging to accurately localize macrophages in the joint, obtaining a high signal-to-background ratio (SBR) of 15.5. Meanwhile, PA imaging is also performed to observe macrophage distribution in the longitudinal section of the whole joint. Moreover, macrophage infiltration is detected in the joint of RA mice with the absence of RA pathologies such as synovitis and cartilage loss. The results provide an opportunity for in vivo macrophage tracking and early diagnosis of RA.

Harvesting heat or solar energy to directly generate affordable and sustainable electricity holds great promise toward both fundamental science and practical applications in self-powered wearable electronics. However, solar thermoelectric (STE) devices remain challenging in establishing a stable and significant temperature gradient (Δ T ) across thermoelectric materials for cost-effective electricity generation. Herein, a wearable STE generator with all-weather and high-performance electricity generation was elaborately designed and synthesized sandwiched by a thermogalvanic cell and a large-area nanofiber membrane of Cs 0.32 WO 3 (CWO) nanoparticles with strong near-infrared (NIR) absorption. These prepared CWO membranes, which were prepared via an electrostatic spinning technique, present a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 42.7 % with no degradation after running for 10 cycles. Notably, a significant Δ T of 31.5 K across the thermoelectric modular was achieved for STE generation via the thermal concentration of these photothermal membranes under natural sunlight. Owing to the high thermopower of 2.87 mV K −1 for each p-n pair, STE generation demonstrates a maximum output voltage of 200 mV under natural solar irradiance during the time period of noon. This work explores a new strategy to achieve efficient heat management of STE devices for high electricity generation under all-weather conditions, which demonstrates great potential for self-powered wearable electronics.

MoS 2 nanosheets have received a lot of favor in biomedical applications due to their outstanding near-infrared (NIR) responsiveness. However, the poor aqueous dispersibility of MoS 2 limits their biomedical application. In this paper, in-situ growth method was applied to integrate gold nanorods (AuNRs) with MoS 2 , and then MoS 2 @AuNRs/HAP/PDA (denoted as MAHP) was prepared by introducing hydroxyapatite (HAP) and polydopamine (PDA) into MoS 2 @AuNRs (MA) via self-assembly approach. In-situ grown MA inhibited the aggregation of MoS 2 due to the insertion of AuNRs between MoS 2 nanolayers. Therefore, MA revealed excellent aqueous dispersibility and synergistically enhanced NIR photothermal responsiveness (42.16% of photothermal conversion efficiency). In addition, MAHP exhibited outstanding DOX loading capacity (80%) and distinct pH-/NIR- dual responsive drug release properties, owing to the structural collapse of HAP in acidic medium and the excellent NIR responsiveness of MA. In vitro cell viability results revealed that MAHP could effectively kill MCF-7 cells under the dual effect of NIR laser irradiation and acidic medium. This paper presents a feasible process to prepare MoS 2 -based nanoparticles with NIR/pH dual-responsive release properties, which shows great potential in controlled photothermal therapy field.

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is the most common complication after cataract surgery. Drug-eluting intraocular lens (IOLs) is a promising concept of PCO treatment in modern cataract surgery. However, the large dose of drugs in IOL leads to uncontrollable and unpredictable drug release, which inevitably brings risks of overtreatment and ocular toxicity. Herein, a low-power NIR-triggered thermosensitive IOL named IDG@P(NIPAM- co -AA)-IOL is proposed to improve security and prevent PCO by synergetic controlled drug therapy and simultaneous photo-therapy. Thermosensitive polymer brushes Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide- co -Acrylic acid) (P(NIPAM- co -AA)) is prepared on IOL via surface-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (SI-RAFT) polymerization. Then, Doxorubicin (DOX) and Indocyanine green (ICG) co-loaded Gelatin NPs (IDG NPs) are loaded in P(NIPAM- co -AA) by temperature control. The IDG NPs perform in suit photodynamic & photothermal therapy (PTT&PDT), and the produced heat also provides a trigger for controllable drug therapy with a cascade effect. Such functional IOL shows excellent synergistic drug-phototherapy effect and NIR-triggered drug release behavior. And there is no obvious PCO occurrence in IDG@P(NIPAM- co -AA) IOL under NIR irradiation compared with control group. This proposed IDG@P(NIPAM- co -AA)-IOL serves as a promising platform that combines phototherapy and drug-therapy to enhance the therapeutic potential and medication safety for future clinical application of PCO treatment.

Infrared heating has been widely used in food processing; however, there are few studies on the VIS-NIR radiation properties of food. We measured the radiation properties of starchy foods (potato, Chinese yam and sweet potato) and protein foods (beef tenderloin, pork tenderloin and chicken breast) and dispersions of starches and proteins before and after heat treatment in the 0.38–2.5 μm band. The results show that the radiation penetration depths (RPDs) of all tested foods are relatively high in the 0.6–1.3 μm band, with maximum values in the range of 4–8 mm. After heat treatment, the RPDs of starchy foods slightly increase, while those of protein foods decrease to approximately 1/2 of the original values. Comparative heating experiments of potato, Chinese yam and sweet potato heated by a halogen lamp (1.04 μm) and a carbon fiber lamp (1.76 μm) with peak wavelengths in and out of the 0.6–1.3 μm band, respectively, show that the foods heated by the halogen lamp have faster heating rates and more uniform temperature distributions. Because starchy and protein foods have high RPDs in the 0.6–1.3 μm band, the VIS-NIR radiation containing this band is expected to achieve rapid heating.

Photodetectors are widely used in optoelectronic applications such as remote controlling, optical communication, and intelligent manufacturing. Multi-wavelength response capability can expand the application scenarios of a photodetector. However, responding to and recognizing multiple bands is still challenging for a photodetector. Here, we develop a dual-mode photodetector that can respond to and recognize near-infrared (NIR) and ultraviolet (UV) light with the assistance of a machine-learning model. A hybrid laser processing method was proposed to fabricate this photodetector based on the polyimide substrate. This method uses femtosecond laser and continuous wave laser to induce the formation of carbon and zinc oxide composite material in different forms. The femtosecond laser-processed area and the continuous wave laser-processed area realized stable NIR light detection and UV light detection, respectively. Recognition of the type of incident light was realized with the assistance of a machine-learning classification model. The proposed hybrid laser processing method combines the characteristics of two kinds of lasers and provides new insights into fabricating dual-mode photodetector. This photodetector could advance the development of dual-mode photodetection and has application potential in many fields like wearable devices and smart clothing.

Black phosphorus (BP) shows great potential applications in photoelectric conversion and photocatalysis , but its applications are limited by its disadvantages such as poor ambient stability and rapid carrier recombination under photoirradiation. In this work, it was surprisingly found that the in-situ generation of Ni 2 P onto the surface of BP leaded to a significant improvement in both ambient stability and photocatalytic singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) generation under NIR irradiation. Because of the transfer of electrons from Ni to BP via Ni-P bonds, the Ni 2 P/BP showed better charge separation efficiency and ambient stability in NIR photoelectric conversion. Moreover, the Ni 2 P/BP was able to generate 1 O 2 for NIR photocatalysis through Russell Mechanism. Meanwhile, norfloxacin and E. coli could also be removed by Ni 2 P/BP under NIR irradiation, which further shows the ability to generate 1 O 2 for practical utilization. This work provides a novel insight into the passivation of BP by hetero-atoms doping and a new strategy for green NIR photocatalytic water remediation.

Polymeric materials that can actuate under the stimulation of environmental signals have attracted considerable attention in fields including artificial muscles, soft robotics, implantable devices, etc. To date, the improvement of shape-changing flexibility is mainly limited by their unchangeable shapes and structural and compositional distributions. In this work, we report a one-step treatment process to convert 2D poly(ethylene oxide)/sodium alginate/tannic acid thin films into 3D-shaped moisture- and NIR light-responsive actuators. Spatial surface wetting of the film leads to the release of residual stress generated in film formation in a gradient manner, which drives the wetted regions to bidirectionally bend. By controlling the position and bending amplitude of the wetted regions, designated 3D shapes can be obtained. Moreover, Fe3+ ions in the aqueous solution used for surface wetting can coordinate with carboxylate groups in sodium alginate chains to form a gradient cross-linking network. This gradient network can not only stabilize the resulting 3D shape but also render the film with moisture-responsive morphing behaviors. Fe3+ ions can also self-assemble with tannic acid molecules to form photothermal aggregates, making the film responsive to NIR light. We further show that films with versatile 3D shapes and different modes of deformation can be fabricated by a one-step treatment process. This strategy is convenient and extendable to develop 3D-shaped polymer actuators with flexible shape-changing behaviors.

In recent years, lanthanide doped materials have been extensively studied in the field of fluorescence temperature sensing due to their abundant emission levels and sensitive thermal response. Temperature sensing based on fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of upconversion nanoparticles has the advantages of fast temperature response, non-aggressiveness, and high spatial resolution. However, the most reported FIR sensing has limited sensitivity, probably due to the use of thermal coupling levels. Herein, we report a novel FIR temperature measurement based on non-thermal coupling levels of NaGdF 4 :Yb 3+ /Er 3+ @NaGdF 4 @NaGdF 4 :Yb 3+ /Tm 3+ core-shell-shell nanostructure , which has high sensitivity and robustness simultaneously. The relative sensitivity based on I 801 / I 654 and I 801 / I 841 of Tm 3+ to Er 3+ can reach up to 4.56 (303 K) and 3.82% K −1 (313 K), respectively. Between them, FIR of I 801 / I 841 is independent of excitation power and time. These results show the great potential of FIR based on non-thermal coupling levels in high-sensitive and robust temperature sensors .
