With a strong ability in tailoring molecular structure, nanoscale morphology, and nanodomains, the ferromagnetic metal-organic framework (MOF, M = transition metal) has been considered an advantageous candidate material for dielectric nanocomposites. Herein, a pristine content-controlled Ag nanoparticle driving Ni metal-organic framework (Ag-NiMOF) ultra-thin 2D ferroelectric nanoplatelets have been synthesized by a two-step method, and applied to the PVDF-based energy storage materials. Comprehensive tests and multi-physics simulations have been conducted on the electrical properties of materials. The electric displacement-electric field (D-E) hysteresis loops of the composites show that the discharge density of 6.987 J/cm 3 ~ 2300 kV/cm has been achieved with a 10 wt% filler addition, namely 10Ag-NiMOF/PVDF, which indicates a 5.36 times increase in the discharge density. Finite element simulation further verifies the improvement of the displacement and electrical breakdown strength of the composites. This high performance indicates that both of the centrosymmetric lattice nanodomains of NiMOF and the electrons introduced by Ag nanoparticle would help induce greater polarization in the nanocomposite. Furthermore, the Coulomb blockade effect exerted by the Ag nanoparticle with an appropriate particle size and a fractional concentration can significantly improve the electrical breakdown strength. This 2D hybrid particle provides a novel idea for modifying dielectric composites for high storage device applications.

The novel highly hydrophilic composite additive, graphene oxide-polyethylene glycol (GO-PEG, further abbreviated as P-GO), was synthesized from GO and PEG by the esterification reaction. Then, P-GO was blended into a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) casting solution as an additive, and the effects of P-GO on the performance of the PVDF ultrafiltration (UF) membrane were researched. When amount of added P-GO was 0.5 wt%, the flux of the resultant modified membrane (denoted as P/0.5P-GO) reached as high as 93 L m −2 ·h −1 , that is twice than that of the pure PVDF membrane (45 L m −2 ·h −1 ). Furthermore, water contact angle results confirmed significantly improved hydrophilicity of the P/0.5P-GO membrane. Results of antifouling tests revealed that the P/0.5P-GO membrane showed the lowest total resistance and irreversible resistance among all the membranes prepared in this study, and after physical cleaning, its flux recovery ratio was the highest—78%. These results demonstrated improved antifouling performance of the P/0.5P-GO membrane. Therefore, it can be concluded that P-GO as an additive material for the PVDF membrane has satisfactory performance in improving the membrane hydrophilicity, permeability, and antifouling performance in practical applications.

A novel thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) based on poly (vinylidene fluoride)/poly (ethylene–butylacrylate–glycidyl methacrylate) (PVDF/PTW) (30/70 w/w) blends has been fabricated by dynamic vulcanization due to selective cross-linking of PTW by adding small amount of 3-(2-Aminoethylamino) propyldimethoxymethylsilane (KH602). The blends with KH602 had the solid-like behavior at low frequency and enhanced viscosities and dynamic modulus. The TPV exhibited a quasi co-continuous morphology with PVDF dispersed in PTW matrix, which was different from that of PVDF/PTW blend, exhibiting phase-separated morphology with PVDF dispersed in unvulcanized PTW matrix. The resulted TPVs displayed excellent mechanical properties, and excellent strain recovery, which will be a promising coating material, especially wire and cable applications.

Membranes with special wettability (superhydrophobic/superoleophilic or superhydrophilic/superoleophobic) had been introduced to separate oil/water emulsions. Nevertheless, the surface or pore canals of membrane easily fouled by oily wastewater are the tough challenges towards longtime application. In this work, a PVDF@PDA@ZnO membrane was firstly fabricated via growth of ZnO nanoparticles from ZnO seeds planted on the PVDF@PDA membrane. This PVDF@PDA@ZnO membrane showed good separation capability for various emulsions (which the separation efficiencies and fluxes were up to 99.1% and 654 L m − 2 h − 1 , respectively). The degradation rate of MB solution treated by the composite membrane was almost 100% attributing to the excellent photocatalytic ability of ZnO. Moreover, the composite membrane could maintain high efficiency (above 99.27%) after long-time emulsions separation/UV-light irradiation, which displayed superior UV-driven self-cleaning and oxidation resistance performance. This self-cleanable composite membrane possessed durability and held high promise for long-time oil/water emulsions separation.

The desulfurization property of conventional mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) cannot meet the necessary demand due to particles aggregation and interface defects. Here, we put forward a layer-by-layer (LBL) approach to make a novel PEG@ZIF-8/poly(vinylidene difluoride)(PVDF) composite membrane for pervaporation desulfurization. In this way, a ZIF-8 layer is covered on the surface of the PVDF porous membrane via an in situ growth method. Then, a PEG layer is covered on the ZIF-8 layer by a casting method. Compared with pristine PEG membranes, the separation performance of the ZIF-8@PEG/PVDF nanocomposite membrane increased significantly. This can be attributed to the homogeneous ZIF-8 particle layer and better compatibility between the poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) matrix and ZIF-8 particles. The membrane achieves a maximum total flux of 3.08 kg·m–2·h–1 at the third in situ growth cycles of ZIF-8 particles and a maximum sulfur enrichment factor of 7.6 at the sixth in situ growth cycles of ZIF-8 particles.

Flexible pressure sensors based on piezoelectric materials have been intensively investigated for their wide applications in wearable electronics. However, traditional films based on inorganic/organic composite piezoelectric materials face the bottleneck of defects and cracks or poor dispersion, which hinders the performance of pressure sensors. Herein, polydopamine (PDA) was introduced as a surface modification agent to modify barium titanate (BaTiO 3 , BTO), which was then blended with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix in different ratios to form uniform and homogeneous PDA@BTO/PVDF composites. Afterwards, the flexible piezoelectric pressure sensor was fabricated by a facial solution-casting method. This PDA-modification strategy can improve the dispersion of BTO into PVDF matrix, as well as reduce the interface hole defects and cracks between the two components. As a result, the 17 wt% PDA@BTO/PVDF sensor exhibited a fast response of 61 ms and a remarkable piezoelectric output voltage of 9.3 V, which showed obvious improvement as compared to the pristine PVDF and BTO/PVDF composite counterparts. In addition, as an energy supplier, the sensor could produce a maximum power of 0.122 μW/cm 2 even with high load resistance of 70 MΩ. This pressure sensor was sensitive to various human motions, showing great potential in the applications of wearable electronics.

Membrane fouling can be efficiently mitigated by the vibration of the piezoelectric membrane stimulated by AC signals, but it is still a challenge to fabricate piezoelectric membranes with great efficiency, low energy-consumption, and no harm to the environment during its preparation. The present work provides a new approach to poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes with piezoelectric properties by directly poling β-phase PVDF membranes using green diluents, which revealed better piezoelectric properties than poling α-phase PVDF membranes. Basically, absolute β-phase crystals of PVDF membranes were induced over thermally induced phase separation with the addition of Acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC)/ionic liquid ([BMIM]PF 6 ), which are regarded as green and environment-friendly diluents. To endow the piezoelectric property to the β-phase PVDF membrane, a poling process was necessarily conducted. The effect of the poling process on the membrane structure, morphologies, properties, and performances was investigated. Meanwhile, a vibration test for both of the poled and unpoled membranes was performed in an excitation of the alternating signal. The results demonstrated that the poling process positively endowed the piezoelectric property to the PVDF membranes. The membrane structure, morphologies, and performances of the membranes were also changed to some extent by the poling process. Additionally, filtrations of the poled membrane both with and without electrical signals were carried out to test their antifouling performance on the CaCO 3 suspension system and BSA solution, respectively. It was observed that the stable flux of the membranes notably improved when subjected to an electrical AC signal. Thus, it depicted that the piezoelectric PVDF membrane directly poled from the β-phase possesses a promising antifouling performance due to its high piezoelectric vibration.

With the rapid development of the electronics, information technology, and wearable devices, problems of the power crisis and electromagnetic radiation pollution have emerged. A piezoelectric wearable textile combined with electromagnetic shielding performance has become a favorable solution. Herein, a multifunctional PVDF-based wearable sensor with both electromagnetic shielding function and human body monitoring performance is proposed by incorporating silver nanowires (Ag NWs) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) hybrid-networks into PVDF-casted commercial nonwoven fabrics (NWF). The coordination of Ag NWs and MWCNTs networks ensures the ideal electrical conductivity and mechanical strength. The maximum shielding value of the developed sensor reaches up to 34 dB when the area densities of the Ag NWs and MWCNT are kept at 1.9 and 2.0 mg/cm2, respectively. Additionally, the hydrophobicity of the as-proposed sensor (water contact angle of ∼110.0°) ensures the self-cleaning function and makes it resistive against water and dirt. Moreover, the sensor possesses a force-sensing property by generating different piezoelectric voltages (0, 0.4, 1.0, and 1.5 V) when stimulated by various forces (0, 20, 44, and 60 N). Not only can it respond to different external stress in a timely manner (response sensitivity of ∼0.024 V/N, response time of ∼35 ms), but it can also monitor different body movements, such as joint bending, running, and jumping. This work opens up a new prospect of monitoring the human body as well as protecting human health from electromagnetic radiation surroundings.

The present study deals with novel, and cost-effective preparation of 2D MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) filled polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer nanocomposite for the attenuation of electromagnetic interference (EMI). The obtained nanocomposite showed remarkable shielding effectiveness ( SE ) of 48.47 ± 3.5 dB for 22.55 vol% filler contents at a thickness of 2 mm. Formation of conducting network along with the assembly of micro capacitor network preserved for its high EMI shielding performance. The absorption dominated EMI shielding mechanism explained by the strong resonance, and interfacial polarization favors the loss of incident EM energy confirmed from dielectric measurements. Besides, the enhanced thermal conductivity of MXene-PVDF nanocomposites about 0.767 ± 0.034 Wm −1 K −1 at 22.55 vol% filler content depicts that a large amount of incident EM wave attenuated majorly by dielectric components which would be dissipated as heat quickly. The fabricated MXene-PVDF nanocomposites could be a potential candidate for EMI shielding materials and promising multifaceted electronic utilization.

In this paper, the fluoro-polymer-coated multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared by in situ atom transfer radical polymerization of 2-(perfluoroalkyl) ethyl methacrylate (FEMA) on the surface of MWCNTs. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that the fluoro-polymer on MWCNTs surface improved the dispersion and compatibility of MWCNTs in the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix. The PFEMA@MWCNTs/PVDF composites exhibited improved thermal stability and reduced crystallinity due to enhanced interface strength between MWCNTs and PVDF. Furthermore, nearly 100% polar phase PVDF formed after introducing high PFEMA@MWCNTs content into PVDF matrix. It was also found that PFEMA@MWCNTs-filled PVDF composites present advantages in increasing dielectric constants and decreasing loss tangents due to the restriction of interface polarization and leakage current. Based on the percolation threshold and ac conductivities, the PFEMA@MWCNTs/PVDF composites exhibit good insulation properties and are promising for high-performance dielectric composite applications.

Water pollution caused by oil spills or sewage discharges has become a serious ecological environmental issue. Despite the membrane separation technique having a promising application in wastewater purification, the membrane fabrication method and separation robustness have remained unsatisfactory until now. Herein, we developed a novel strategy, spacer-assisted sequential phase conversion, to create a patterned polyvinylidene fluoride@polypropylene (P-PVDF@PP) substrate membrane with a multiscale roughened surface. Based on that surface structure, the underwater oil resistance behavior of the P-PVDF@PP membrane was improved. Moreover, owing to the abundant active sites on the P-PVDF@PP surface, the polydopamine/P-PVDF@PP (PDA/P-PVDF@PP) Janus membrane could be readily fabricated via wet chemical modification, which exhibited excellent switchable oil–water separation performance. Regarding surfactant-stabilized oil-water emulsion, the as-prepared PDA/P-PVDF@PP Janus membrane also had robust separation efficiency (as high as 99% in the n-hexane/water, chloroform/water, and toluene/water emulsion separation cases) and desirable reusability. Finally, the underlying mechanism of emulsion separation in the PDA/P-PVDF@PP Janus membrane was specified. The as-designed PDA/P-PVDF@PP Janus membrane with high-efficiency oil–water separation shows potential application in oily wastewater treatment, and the developed fabrication method has implications for the fabrication of advanced separation membranes. Keywords:emulsion separation;Janus membrane;patterned interface;switchable wettability

Co-solvent method to precisely reduce the polarity for preparing uniform ZIF-67 nanoparticles. • 17-FAS promotes interfacial compatibility between ZIF-67 and PVDF and increases wetting resistance. • High water flux of 24.7 kg·m −2 ·h −1 with only 3.01% decline rate after 72 h DCMD. Membrane distillation (MD) offers distinct advantages for wastewater treatment, including low operational demands and near-perfect solute rejection. However, its long-term application is severely hindered by issues such as material detachment, membrane deformation, and wetting. Here, a co-solvent-assisted synthesis strategy with n-heptane and methanol was proposed to prepare uniform ZIF-67 nanoparticles. By optimizing the fiber diameter, robust integration of ZIF-67 with the PVDF matrix is achieved. Furthermore, the incorporation of 1 H,1 H,2 H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (17-FAS) significantly improves interfacial adhesion between ZIF-67 and PVDF, effectively preventing particle detachment and reinforcing wetting resistance during prolonged operation. The successful incorporation of ZIF-67 and 17-FAS was confirmed by FTIR and XPS analyses, and SEM and AFM observations revealed the micro-rough morphology of membrane surface. The enhanced mechanical properties and thermal stability of the composite membranes were verified by tensile testing and TGA. The developed ZIF-67@17-FAS/PVDF membrane exhibits a high water contact angle of 156.6° and the permeate flux of 24.7 kg·m −2 ·h −1 with 3.01% decline rate for 3.5 wt% NaCl solution within 72 h of direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD). Remarkably, under a high-salinity condition of 10 wt%, the flux decline rate is only 7.01%, demonstrating outstanding long-term stability. This work provides a promising strategy to overcome the key limitations of MD membranes through synergistic size control, structural optimization, and interfacial engineering.
