Abstract The modes of occurrence of trace elements in coal reveal essential information about environmental impact during coal exploitation and utilization. Utilizing improvements on a recently published sequential leaching protocol, this study investigated the modes of occurrence of Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Cd, and Pb (water-soluble, ion-exchangeable, carbonate-bound, sulfide-bound, organic-bound, and silicate-bound) in coal samples collected from the Nantong coalfield in southwestern China. Results suggest the improved method favorably affected the sequential leaching experiment. The ashing temperature did not exceed 390°C and did not damage the structure of the silicate minerals, facilitating the effective extraction of trace elements within the organic matter. The case study in the Nantong coalfield demonstrated that the water-soluble and ion-exchangeable fractions account for only a small portion of the six elements. Specifically, chromium exhibited affinities with carbonates and silicates. The percentages of different target fractions for cobalt varied significantly in different samples. Nickel was almost evenly distributed in the fractions of carbonates, sulfides, organic matter, and silicates. For cadmium, silicate was the main fraction, followed by sulfides. Lead predominantly appeared in carbonates and sulfides. The correlativity of different elements in the corresponding fractions revealed carbonates and sulfides as the primary carriers for all six elements, followed by silicates and organic matter. Overall, Cr, Co, Ni, and Cu exhibited very close relationships and similar distribution patterns in different coal samples. Organic-bound Cr, Co, and Ni were noticeable in the No. 4 and 6 coal seams, though they were not the dominant fractions. The affinity between Pb and Cd indicated they have similar modes of occurrence.

One-step solution fabrication of high-performance Sn-including perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is very challenging due to the rapid crystallization of the Sn-based perovskite layer, leading to a poor film morphology and low surface coverage. In this work, a well-controlled one-step method, assisted by a multi-step solvent treatment, is developed for the growth of a high-quality CH3NH3Pb(1−x)SnxI3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) perovskite film on a planar PEDOT:PSS substrate. The CH3NH3Sn0.25Pb0.75I3 perovskite films consisting of densely packed and uniformly distributed large crystal grains were obtained using sec-butyl alcohol solvent engineering and N,N-dimethylformamide solvent annealing under an N2 atmosphere. The CH3NH3Sn0.25Pb0.75I3-based PSCs with a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 12.08% and an average PCE of 11.01% were obtained. The PSCs also exhibit excellent performance reproducibility, good air stability and weak hysteresis behavior. The enhancement in the performance of the PSCs is attributed to the well-crystallized CH3NH3Sn0.25Pb0.75I3 film, resulting in simultaneous improvement in charge–carrier transport properties and reduction in charge–carrier recombination, a very promising approach to obtain high performance Sn-including perovskite solar cells.

Efficient removal of arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) from industrial wastewater has long been a critical environmental issue due to their serious risk to human health. Therefore, in this work, a modified banana peel biochar (MBPB) was prepared by mixing calcium nitrate , diammonium hydrogen phosphate , sulfuric acid, ferric nitrate with dehydrated banana peel biochar as adsorbent for As(V) and Pb(II) removal in wastewater, and their absorption mechanism was investigated. SEM-EDS, TEM, FTIR , XRD , XPS , BET, kinetic, and isothermal characteristics of MBPB and pristine banana peel biochar (PBPB) were conducted. The behavior of both metal ions on MBPB and PBPB was well explained by the pseudo-second-order kinetic with Langmuir and Freundlich models. We found that the two biochar’s behaviors were mixture processes of monolayer and multilayer adsorption , achieving maximum capacities as determined by the Langmuir model of 39.5 mg g −1 (MBPB-As), 33.2 mg g −1 (MBPB-Pb), 30.8 mg g −1 (PBPB-Pb), and 23.5 mg g −1 (PBPB-As), with maximum efficiencies of 98.7% (MBPB-As) and 90.3% (MBPB-Pb) under optimum conditions. Thermodynamic tests showed that As(V) and Pb(II) removal on MBPB was a spontaneous and endothermic physisorption process. MBPB showed great reusability in As(V) and Pb(II) removal, with removal rates as high as 71.4% and 66.5% after five cycles, respectively. Selective adsorption of As(V) and Pb(II) was also investigated on MBPB, and the removal rate was still high in the mixture of heavy metals. These findings provide a feasible method for the environmental-benign utilization of banana peel as a low-priced adsorbent in wastewater treatment .

Paint has a variety of excellent properties containing anti-corrosion, waterproof, oil-proof, chemicalresistant, light-resistant, temperature-resistant. The wooden furniture covered with paint is commonly used to ensure their excellent quality. However, the soluble heavy metals in the paint exist on the surface of wooden furniture, endangering human health when they are enriched in human bodies. Therefore, an effective detection method is needed to analyze the contents of heavy metals in wooden furniture. Here, we designed and manufactured a disposable screen-printed electrode (SPE) for the Cd(II) and Pb(II) determination through square wave anodic stripping voltammetry, which used a special printed ink mixed multi-walled carbon nanotube and coated with bismuth oxide nanoparticle (BONP-MSPE). The characteristics of BONP-MSPE were studied using cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and square-wave stripping voltammetry, and then the detecting conditions were optimized. Under the optimal conditions, the values of peak currents of Cd(II) and Pb(II) increased linearly with the concentrations of Cd(II) and Pb(II). The linear ranges were from 0.5 to 40 μg/L for Cd(II) and 0.5 to 40 μg/L for Pb(II), with detection limits of 0.5 μg/L and 0.05 μg/L (S/N = 3), respectively, Lastly, the BONP-MSPE was further employed to measure the contents of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in pint samples analysis.

Mesoporous amino functionalized silica aerogels (MASA-X) with high adsorption capacity were prepared at ambient pressure conditions for removal of Pb (II) ions from water. Supported by SEM images and FTIR spectra, the presence of –NH 2 groups and porous structures on the surface of MASA-X were demonstrated, which played a critical role in promoting the interfacial adsorption process . The adsorption isotherm fitted well by Langmuir model, indicating that the adsorption occurred on a homogeneous surface and the maximum adsorption capacity of MASA-1, MASA-2, MASA-3, MASA-4 were 444.4 mg/g, 628.93 mg/g, 549.45 mg/g and 286.53 mg/g, respectively, and MASA-2 demonstrated optimal adsorption performance. The kinetic data showed good correlation coefficient with the pseudo-second order kinetic model, and the adsorption equilibrium of MASA-1, MASA-2, MASA-3, MASA-4 were reached in 120 min, 60 min, 20 min and 20 min, respectively. And raising temperature facilitated the adsorption of Pb (II) as it was a spontaneous and endothermic process. It was noteworthy that MASA-2 showed satisfactory reusability after eight adsorption-desorption cycles. FTIR, XPS coupled with Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation revealed that the involvement of monodentate N atoms in the coordination with Pb (II) on adsorption of Pb (II) by MASA-2. The environmental impact of the MASA-2 preparation process was calculated through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and by analyzing the contribution of each material in the production of MASA-2, a more environmentally friendly and effective production strategy has been finally proposed, which could facilitate the promotion of MASA-X adsorbents in the heavy metal contaminated water market.

There have been a number of remarkable signs of progress achieved in tin–lead mixed narrow-bandgap perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to the high theoretical power conversion efficiency (PCE) and their promising application in tandem devices. Indeed, Sn–Pb mixed PSCs without a hole transport layer (HTL) also have been more attractive owing to lower cost and simplification of the device structure. However, the defects in perovskite film introduced by Sn 2+ oxidation severely restrict device efficiency and stability.Herein, a small organic molecule, 4,4'-sulfonyldiphenol, is employed to passivate perovskite ( E g = 1.26 eV) surface to decrease the interfacial defects and suppress the nonradiative carrier recombination. Furthermore, by regulating energy-level alignment, charge carrier extraction is greatly facilitated. The device performance is significantly enhanced in that the champion PCE is enlarged to 21.43% with an open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) of 0.876 V from only 18.02% with a V oc of 0.770 V. The stability of unencapsulated devices is improved substantially as well while retaining 80% PCE of its initial value after being stored in the glovebox for around 600 h. This facile but highly effective strategy successfully proposes the promising development of HTL-free Sn–Pb mixed PSCs.

Plant-derived chelators used for heavy metal removal have attracted increasing attention because of their low cost, strong coordination effect, and environmentally benign features. Herein, natural polyphenol-based adsorbents (i.e., TA-Fe 7 and TA-Fe 12 ) were prepared using tannic acid (TA) and ferric ions through simple cross-linking self-assembly reactions with pH 7 and 12, respectively. Adsorption isotherms demonstrated that TA-Fe 12 showed better adsorption ability towards Pb(II) than TA-Fe 7 with a maximum adsorption capacity of 356.1 mg·g −1 at 298 K. Our evaluation of the adsorption affinity indicated that the distribution coefficient K d of TA-Fe 12 for Pb(II) was apparently higher than that of the other cations, revealing the excellent adsorptive selectivity of TA-Fe 12 towards Pb(II). The remarkable adsorption capacity of TA-Fe 12 can be attributed to the strong coordination between Pb(II) and phenolic hydroxyl groups, ester groups of TA as well as the specific adsorption of Pb(II) on the newly formed hydrous ferric oxides (HFO), demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Batch cyclic experiments indicated that TA-Fe 12 could be employed for repeated use after 10 adsorption–desorption cycles. Fixed-bed tests indicated that the TA-Fe 12 column could produce clean water with bed volumes of 9500 and 7860 ([Pb] < 1 mg·L −1 ) from synthetic Pb(II)-polluted wastewater and simulated electroplating wastewater, which were significantly higher than those of other commercial adsorbents.

A metal-organic framework (ZnO@ZIF-8) with great adsorption potential was developed using ZnO nanoparticles as a surface-active center and applied to lead removal from wastewater. The adsorption experiments were carried out and the related adsorption behaviors were investigated. The adsorbent shows excellent adsorption performance between pH 3–5. The maximum adsorption capacity of ZnO@ZIF-8 for Pb (II) was 689.36 mg/g at 303 K. The adsorptive process of Pb (II) onto ZnO@ZIF-8 conforms to the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. Thermodynamics illustrate that the adsorption process is chemical adsorption on a uniform surface. Selectivity experiments showed that ZnO@ZIF-8 had the strongest affinity with Pb (II). The adsorption-desorption cycle confirmed that ZnO@ZIF-8 was a reliable and recyclable adsorbent. XPS, Zeta potential and FT-IR analysis illustrate that the adsorption of Pb (II) by ZnO@ZIF-8 was concentrated in electrostatic adsorption and chelation. DFT calculation indicated that there are different types of Pb (II) combination mode (Pb-N and Pb-O) and the adsorption mainly depended on the chelation. This study presented herein played important roles in the governance of heavy metal waste-water pollution as a result of ZnO@ZIF-8 can effective selectivity cleanup of Pb (II).

A new zirconium-based adsorption material (UiO-66-AMP) was prepared by modifying UiO-66-NH 2 with 5-adenosine to effectively remove Pb(II) and Cr(VI) from wastewater. The SEM, EDS, XRS and FT-IR characterization confirmed the successful synthesis of UiO-66-AMP. We conducted a sets of experiments to test the adsorption effectiveness of UiO-66-AMP for Pb(II) and Cr(VI). The maximum adsorption capacity of UiO-66-AMP for Cr(VI) (pH=2) and Pb(II) (pH=4) are 196.60 and 189.69 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption process conforms to the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, which indicates that the adsorption is a single-layer chemical process. Gibbs free energy ( ∆G) indicates that the adsorption of Pb(II) is an exothermic reaction , while the adsorption of Cr(VI) is an endothermic reaction . At the same time, the adsorbent maintains excellent adsorption capacity at least after 4 cycles. The good adsorption performance of UiO-66-AMP towards the metal ions was attributed to the surface complexation and electrostatic interactions. Therefore, the new adsorbent has obvious application prospect to remove Pb(II) and Cr(VI) from wastewater.

In this work, a novel adsorbent was evaluated for eliminating heavy metal ions from water. The cyano-functionalized silica aerogels (ANSA-X) were fabricated by functionalizing silica aerogel with 2-cyanoethyltriethoxysilane, and then further by the reaction with hydroxylamine hydrochloride to obtain amidoxime-functionalized silica aerogels (AOSA-X) with a large specific surface area. The FTIR and NMR analysis indicated that cyano was successfully transformed into amidoxime groups. Adsorption experiments showed the adsorption performed well with the Langmuir isotherm, and AOSA3 exhibited the optimum adsorption property with 598.05 mg/g for Pb (II) and 534.10 mg/g for Cu (II). The thermodynamic results indicated that spontaneous endothermic process was the nature of the adsorption. The adsorption rate of AOSA3 was above 86% after five successive adsorption–desorption cycles. XPS analysis and DFT calculations demonstrated that the N and O atoms participated in the chelating adsorption of Pb (II) and Cu (II), and the N atom on the amidoxime groups played a dominant role. Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) evaluated the environmental effect of the preparation of 1 kg AOSA3 adsorbent, identified the environmental factors with high environmental impact, proposed alternative solutions, proved the feasibility of preparing a novel high-efficiency amidoxime-based adsorbent, and provided a guideline for the sustainable mass production of AOSA3 adsorbent. In conclusion, AOSA3 demonstrated to have promising application perspectives in heavy metal effluent treatment.

Nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC), due to its lack of early symptoms, has become one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths globally. Exosomes, small membrane vesicles secreted by cells, are widely present in human bodily fluids. In the bodily fluids of NSCLC patients, the quantity of extracellular vesicles is double that of healthy individuals, suggesting their potential as biomarkers for screening NSCLC. This study designed a dual-modal aptasensor that integrated excellent sensitivity in electrochemical detection and portability in fluorescence detection into one device. AuNPs were functionalized with exosome-capturing probes containing thiol-modified CD63 aptamers, which were immobilized on screen-printed gold electrodes. On the other hand, the carboxylated CD63 aptamer was immobilized on the surface of PB-modified g-C3N4 loaded with Co-SANs particles (Co@g-C3N4@PB). By combining these components, a sandwich structure (AuNPs/Apt1/Exo/Apt2- Co@g-C3N4@PB) was constructed, forming a probe for specific exosome recognition. First, the samples were preliminarily assessed for their positive or negative status under a fluorescence inverted microscope. Subsequently, a more in-depth quantitative analysis was conducted on suspected positive samples using electrochemical or fluorescence analysis methods. The detection limits for electrochemical analysis and fluorescence analysis were 66.68 and 33.5particles/mL, respectively. In the analysis of clinical serum exosome samples, the developed dual-modal aptasensor effectively distinguished serum specimens from those of NSCLC patients and healthy volunteers. This highlighted the inspection capability of the dual-modal adapter sensor, especially in point-of-care testing, making it a highly suitable tool for clinical applications.

A widely applicable Zn-DMTD-MOGs was prepared via direct construction strategy. • Zn-DMTD-MOGs shows great potential for trace heavy metals removal from real water. • DFT provides a local coordination cluster model for amorphous MOGs at atomic scale. • Synergistic chelating/monodentate coordination and LMCT enable efficient lead capture. Metal-organic gels (MOGs) have attracted extensive attention in the field of heavy metal removal, owing to their advantages including ease of surface modification, good stability, hierarchical pore structure, tunable functional groups, and mild and facile preparation conditions. However, the existing MOGs still leave considerable room for performance improvement. To produce MOGs with enhanced adsorption sites, high specific surface area, and greater pore volume, this study combined ultrasound-assisted nucleation with a high-concentration reaction strategy and triethylamine-mediated deprotonation, thereby enabling direct coordination between 2,5-Dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMTD) and Zn 2+ . Then, Zn-DMTD-MOGs material with higher-density N and S adsorption sites was successfully synthesized. The material exhibits a disordered particle-stacked amorphous structure with abundant mesopores (3–24 nm). Adsorption experiments demonstrate that the material achieves a trace Pb(II) removal efficiency of 96.98% within 10 s. The material achieves wide applicability over a low concentration range (≤ 42 mg/L) and a broad pH range (3.5–10.5), along with favorable stability, good reusability, and applicability to real water matrices. A local coordination cluster model was obtained through density functional theory (DFT) geometry optimization, and a synergistic chelating/monodentate coordination and ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) mechanism was established. The analysis reveals that the material adsorbs Pb(II) primarily through chelation at dual N/S sites and monodentate coordination at single S sites. This mechanism endows Zn-DMTD-MOGs with ultrafast adsorption kinetics and excellent cyclic stability, making them promising candidates for heavy metal remediation in drinking water sources.
