Hedong Chen,Kaixiang Shen,Xianhua Hou,Guangzu Zhang,Shaofeng Wang,Fuming Chen,Lijun Fu,Haiqing Qin,Yingchun Xia,Guofu Zhou

Si-based anode with hierarchical protective function and hollow ring-like carbon matrix has been successfully designed and prepared by a simple one-step spray drying method. Nano-Si particles are coated by carbon layer and then encapsulated in a strong carbon matrix with hollow ring-like structure composed of carbon nanotubes and wrinkled graphene sheets. The Si-based anode, nano-Si@carbon/carbon nanotubes@graphene sheets, exhibits excellent electrochemical performance including high initial coloumbic efficiency, favorable cyclic stability and outstanding rate capability. The composite delivers an initial discharge/charge capacity of 2891.7/2533.3 mAh g −1 with a high initial coloumbic efficiency of 87.6%, high capacity of 1524.3 mAh g −1 after 130 cycles with high capacity retention of 92.4% (vs. 1618.4 mAh g −1 for the 100 cycles), and high capacity maintaining at 1073.2/1016.2 mAh g −1 at a large current density of 1.6 A g −1 . Furthermore, the scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy images of the composite electrode after several operating cycles also indicate that composite electrode exhibits structural stability and nano-Si particles are still wrapped by the carbon matrix material. Therefore, the composite is very promising anode for lithium ion batteries.

Effect of heat and cryogenic treatments on the microstructure and properties of YF3 modified NiTi-Si laser cladding coatings

Wennan Su,Chi Zhang,Xiufang Cui,Guo Jin,Changhao Liu,Erbao Liu,Jian Li,Haonan Zhao,Boyu Cao,Haoliang Tian

YF 3 modification NiTi-Si coatings were prepared on Ti-6Al-4 V substrate by laser cladding. On this foundation, heat and cryogenic treatments were conducted respectively to explore the effect of after-treatment procedures. The consequence of post-treatment methods on the phase constituent, microstructure, mechanical property, and phase transition characteristics of post-treatment coatings was studied. The phase constituent of the three coatings was roughly the same, composed of NiTi and NiTi 2 . The results show that heat treatment led to the coarsening of NiTi phase grain size and increased Si content in the NiTi 2 phase. In addition, due to the rapid cooling rate provided by cryogenic treatment, the spinodal decomposition of the Si element occurred in the NiTi 2 phase. Furthermore, the post-treatments also affected the phase transformation characteristics of the coatings. As the temperature of martensitic transformation is sensitive to the content of Ni element in the NiTi phase, the M s and M f points of the heat treatment coating were slightly higher. In contrast to the heat treatment, the M s and M f points of the cryogenic treatment coating decreased. The microhardness of the three coatings is as follows: cryogenic treatment > original coatings > heat treatment. The cryogenic treatment coating has the highest microhardness due to grain refinement and spinodal decomposition. In addition, the cryogenic treatment coating showed the best wear morphology.

Poly(ionic liquid) Grafted MXene via Si-ATRP and its Polyurethane Composite Foam: Mechanical, Flame Retardant and Sensing Properties

Bo Zhang,Ruixin Wang

Compared with other types of sensors, capacitive flexible pressure sensors (CFPS), with low sensitivity, are more susceptible to environmental changes. It is still a considerable challenge to achieve high sensitivity, excellent mechanical properties and long-time structural stability simultaneously. Targeting the aforementioned issues, herein, Ti3C2 (MXene) with high dielectric constant was firstly chemically modified with a poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) via surface-initiated ATRP, and then combined with a porous polyurethane foam (PUF) 3D network structure via a one-step blending foaming method. Thanks to the organic-inorganic hybrid network based on the PU/MXene porous structures and the uniformly distributed micro-capacitor structure provided by MXene@PIL, the mechanical properties, structural stability, flame retardancy and dielectric properties of the composite foam were all significantly enhanced. When the content of MXene@PIL was 10%, the sensitivity of CFPS based on this dielectric were 17.1, 5.2, and 2.5/KPa in the pressure ranges of 0-1 KPa, 1-12 KPa and 12-100 KPa, respectively. In addition, the sensor showed the response and recovery times of 88 and 82 ms under a low pressure of 355 Pa. The light, flexible sensor prepared in this work is expected to be used in wearable devices to monitor physiological signals, and it should also be a good candidate for the next generation of man-machine interface characterization devices.

Flexible interfaces between Si anodes and composite electrolytes consisting of poly(propylene carbonates) and garnets for solid-state batteries

Hanyu Huo,Jiyang Sun,Cheng chen,Xianglu Meng,Minghui He,Ning Zhao,Xiangxin Guo

Flexible interfaces between Si anodes and composite electrolytes consisting of poly(propylene carbonates) (PPCs) and garnets have been fabricated. The solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) of PPC/garnet/LiTFSI show the conductivity of 4.2 × 10 −4  S cm −1 at room temperature . Their combination with the Si layer anodes allows great alleviation of internal stress resulting from the large volume variation during lithiation and delithiation process of Si anodes. As a result, the Si/SPE/Li cells exhibit 2520 mAh g −1 , 2260 mAh g −1 , 1902 mAh g −1 , 1342 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C, 0.2 C, 0.5 C, and 1 C, respectively. Furthermore, with such compatible and stable interfaces of Si/SPE and the LiFePO 4 cathodes in solid-state batteries , the specific capacity of 2296 mAh g −1 in terms of Si is obtained, which remains 82.6% after 100 cycles at room temperature and 0.1 C. The results here indicate that constructing of flexible interfaces between Si anodes and SPEs is a promising strategy to develop high performance solid-state batteries .

Metal–Organic Frameworks-Derived Mesoporous Si/SiOx@NC Nanospheres as a Long-Lifespan Anode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Muhammad K. Majeed,Guangyao Ma,Yanxiu Cao,Hongzhi Mao,Xiaojian Ma,Wenzhe Ma

Graphical Mesoporous Si/SiO x @NC nanospheres : A core–shell structured Si/SiO x @NC composite with distinct nanostructure was controllably synthesized through metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived magnesio-thermic reduction. Owing to the core–shell structure, the final product with the optimized nanostructure exhibits enhanced electrochemical performance in terms of reversible capacity and long-term cycling stability, which may be attributed to the many beneficial factors. Silicon (Si)-based anode materials with suitable engineered nanostructures generally have improved lithium storage capabilities, which provide great promise for the electrochemical performance in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, a metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived unique core–shell Si/SiO x @NC structure has been synthesized by a facile magnesio-thermic reduction, in which the Si and SiO x matrix were encapsulated by nitrogen (N)-doped carbon. Importantly, the well-designed nanostructure has enough space to accommodate the volume change during the lithiation/delithiation process. The conductive porous N-doped carbon was optimized through direct carbonization and reduction of SiO 2 into Si/SiO x simultaneously. Benefiting from the core–shell structure, the synthesized product exhibited enhanced electrochemical performance as an anode material in LIBs. Particularly, the Si/SiO x @NC-650 anode showed the best reversible capacities up to 724 and 702 mAh g −1 even after 100 cycles. The excellent cycling stability of Si/SiO x @NC-650 may be attributed to the core–shell structure as well as the synergistic effect between the Si/SiO x and MOF-derived N-doped carbon.

Scalable synthesis of nano-Si embedded in porous C and its enhanced performance as anode of Li-ion batteries

Xiangyang Zhuang,Yao Zhang,Lingxiao He,Yunfeng Zhu,Qifeng Tian,Xinli Guo,Jian Chen,Liquan Li,Quan Wang,Guanzhou Song,Xiaoxiao Yan

In the present work, the sample of Si nanoparticles embedded in porous C (denoted as Si@porous-C) has been successfully synthesized by using nano-MgO as the pore-former. Observations by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) on Si@porous-C sample reveal that Si nanoparticles homogeneously disperse in porous carbon scaffold. As anode of lithium ion battery (LIB), Si@porous-C preserves a charge-discharge capacity of 1172   mAh   g −1 after 40 cycles, possessing enhanced cyclic deterioration of only 0.35% per cycle in comparison with Si nanoparticles and Si nanoparticles embedded in ordinary carbon (denoted as Si@C). It delivers reversible capacities of about 947   mAh   g −1 , 670   mAh   g −1 , and 394   mAh   g −1 in current densities of 1000   mA   g −1 , 2000   mA   g −1 , and 4000   mA   g −1 , respectively, all of which are higher than those of commercial nano-silicon and Si@C. The improved high-rate capability of Si@porous-C could be attributed to a decreased resistance and enhanced infiltration of electrolytic solution around nano-silicon particles. The merits of scalable synthetic process and improved electrochemical properties recommend Si@porous-C as a promising anode material for high performance Li-ion batteries.

Natural Si/N Co-Doped Porous Biomass Carbon Micron-Tubes as High-Performance Anode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Ziqing Xu,Kai Cao,Zhifeng Wang

The development of carbon-based anode materials for high-performance lithium-ion batteries has been limited by their low theoretical capacity density, low conductivity, and high manufacturing costs. Herein, natural Si/N co-doped biomass carbon micron-tubes, derived from reed catkins, were synthesized. The as-prepared RC-Si/N anode exhibits a good discharge capacity of 761.3 mAh g−1at 100 mA g−1after 200 cycles. Moreover, it exhibits outstanding cycling stability, retaining discharge capacities of 517.7 mAh g−1at 1 A g−1after 1000 cycles. The excellent electrochemical performance is attributed to the trace Si originating from the biomass precursor, which provides high specific capacity, while N doping introduces structural defects and improves electronic conductivity. Coupled with its unique micrometer-scale tubular morphology, the material facilitates efficient lithium-ion transport and storage. Further DFT calculations corroborate enhanced Li+adsorption ability, sustained structural integrity over prolonged cycling, and promoted reaction kinetics. These findings underscore the potential of natural Si/N co-doped biomass-derived carbon as an advanced lithium-ion battery anode material.

Synergistic dealumination-silication via a binary CHCl3-SiCl4 vapor treatment for NaY: Steering mesopore evolution and Si(1Al) enrichment

Rui Li,Hongjuan Zhao,Tian Xia,Suofu Nie,Chuanhang Zhou,Qiang Zhang,Jiujiang Wang,Penghui Zeng,Maocai Shi,Honghai Liu,Xionghou Gao,Chunming Xu,Baojian Shen

A synergistic vapor-phase strategy using CHCl 3 and SiCl 4 regulates pore structure and acidity in NaY zeolite. • A one-step process constructs a hierarchical micro-mesoporous structure with Al-depleted bulk and Al-enriched surface layer. • Controllable mesopore evolution by tuning the imbalance between CHCl 3 -guided dealumination and SiCl 4 -assisted silication. • A system with Brønsted acidity (framework Si(1Al)) and Lewis acidity (extra-framework Al) is built. To overcome micropore diffusion limitations and acid site regulation in FCC zeolite catalysis, this study develops a synergistic vapor-phase modification using SiCl 4 and CHCl 3 . By tuning the agent ratio, pore structure and acid distribution are optimized while preserving NaY framework integrity. The synergy is not a simple combination but a dynamic process featuring CHCl 3 -guided dealumination and SiCl 4 -assisted silication with a moderate imbalance. CHCl 3 selectively removes Al from Al-rich sites, preserving framework Al predominantly as Si(1Al) units, which generate abundant Brønsted acid sites (BAS) and promote diffusion pathways. Meanwhile, SiCl 4 repairs framework defects and anchors extracted Al as highly dispersed extra-framework Lewis acid sites (LAS). This cooperative interaction creates a hierarchical micro-mesoporous structure with a low-Al bulk and an Al-rich surface layer, retaining abundant BAS while introducing strong LAS-achieving balanced acidity. In n-octane cracking, this architecture enhances diffusion, suppresses hydride transfer, and improves light olefin (C 3 –C 4 ) selectivity. This work provides insights into zeolite structure-performance relationships for rational catalyst design. A synergistic vapor-phase modification creates a zeolite with a hierarchical micro-mesoporous structure, featuring a low-aluminum bulk and an aluminum-rich surface. This architecture optimizes pore connectivity and acid site distribution for enhanced cracking performance. Download: Download high-res image (406KB) Download: Download full-size image

One-step synthesis of Si-containing biochar from wheat dust for oxytetracycline hydrochloride removal: Mechanisms and life cycle assessment

Xue Song,Erying Xu,Weishuang Lou,Hailiang Zhao,Guanghui Yan,Xiaodan Lou,Yingming Zhang,Yongde Liu,Guihua Yan

Wheat dust (WD) is a mixed organic dust produced during the storage, transportation and processing of wheat, and its components include cellulose and ash, etc. To achieve its resource utilization, a “one-step” alkali-activated pyrolysis method was developed to prepare a Si-containing biochar (Si-WDB). Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize adsorption conditions for oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC). The specific surface area of Si-WDB increased to 241.75 m 2 /g, approximately 331 times that of the pristine WD (0.73 m 2 /g). Semi-quantitative pore-structure analysis suggested that mesopore-associated surface accommodation could account for approximately 72.47% of the measured adsorption capacity. Multi-scale characterizations and DFT calculations suggested that endogenous silicon was redistributed into or associated with the carbonaceous matrix during pyrolysis, providing Si-containing sites that might contribute to OTC adsorption through localized Si-involved interactions, together with π–π EDA interactions and hydrogen bonding. Life cycle assessment (LCA) confirmed a lower carbon footprint (7.06 kg CO₂ eq/kg Si-WDB), highlighting the environmental sustainability of the waste-to-resource strategy. This study established a sustainable pathway for upgrading silicon-rich agricultural waste into biochar adsorbent for antibiotic contaminated water remediation.

Spontaneous Formation of Conductive Solid Electrolyte Interphase on Porous Si@C@ZIF Anodes for Highly Stable Lithium-Ion Batteries

Zaohong Zhang,Jing Yang,Dmitry V. Bavykin,Carlos Ponce de León,Kai Zhang,Yong-Wei Zhang,Jia Hong Pan

Nanostructured silicon (Si) is a highly promising anode material for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its ultra-high theoretical capacity (Li 22 Si 5 , ∼4200 mAh g − 1 ), yet its practical application is hindered by poor conductivity and drastic volume expansion (300–400%). Here, Si nanoparticles are in situ encapsulated within a ZIF-8 framework, guided by a pre-applied carbon coating, forming a porous core–shell architecture that simultaneously enhances ionic/electronic transport and buffers volumetric changes. The resulting Si@C@ZIF anode delivers a reversible capacity of 1030 mAh g − 1 after 500 cycles at 1.0 A g − 1 . In a full cell with LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811), 76.8% capacity retention is maintained at 0.5 C over 260 cycles. Post-cycling analysis reveals a robust solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) enriched in Li 3 N and LiF. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that preferential LiPF 6 adsorption facilitates conductive SEI formation, accelerating Li + diffusion and enhancing interfacial stability, demonstrating a low-cost route to highly durable Si/C nanocomposite anodes for practical high-energy LIBs.

A Si-C bonded composite derived from halloysite enabling synergistic polarity and conductivity for high-stability lithium-sulfur batteries

Wanting Zhou,Kaiyang Zheng,Ranxiao Ao,Chenyu Yan,Yihui Li,Aidong Tang,Huaming Yang

The commercialization of lithium-sulfur (Li–S) batteries is primarily hindered by the polysulfide shuttle effect and sluggish reaction kinetics. Engineering a host material that synergizes efficient polysulfide confinement with high electrical conductivity, through a simple and potentially scalable process, remains a key challenge. Here, we demonstrate a facile, one-pot hydrothermal strategy to cost-effectively convert abundant natural halloysite clay into a mesoporous silicon-carbon composite (MHSC). This process effectively establishes an intimate Si – C bonded interface between the conductive carbon network and the polar silica framework, inherited from the mineral precursor. The resulting MHSC host exhibits excellent electronic conductivity (0.011 S cm −1 ) and strong polysulfide adsorption. When evaluated as a sulfur cathode, the MHSC/S composite delivers a high initial capacity of 1213 mAh·g −1 at 0.2 C and, more importantly, exceptional long-term stability with a negligible capacity decay rate of only 0.089% per cycle over 700 cycles at 1 C. This work provides a commercially viable and environmentally benign route for manufacturing high-performance Li–S battery cathodes by upcycling natural clay resources.

Mussel-inspired modification of Si-PDA-BNNS-OH@PDA-CNF composite films with excellent thermal conductivity and mechanical properties

Meng Ma,Dezhong Wang,Yan Liao,Sicheng Huang,Si Chen,Yanqin Shi,Huiwen He,Yulu Zhu,Xu Wang

Cellulose nanofibers (CNF) feature a three-dimensional nanofiber network, excellent mechanical properties, and abundant surface hydroxyl groups, facilitating the integration of boron nitride (BN) for fabricating flexible composite films with high thermal conductivity. However, achieving a balance between high thermal conductivity and strong mechanical strength at high BN loadings remains a formidable challenge. A mussel-inspired strategy is employed, in which BNNS-OH and CNF are coated with polydopamine (PDA) to improve their interfacial adhesion and compatibility. The PDA-BNNS-OH is then silanized with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane to acquire a positive charge, enabling its subsequent electrostatic adsorption onto PDA-CNF and assembly into a robust film. At a high filler loading of 60 wt%, the resultant composite film achieves an outstanding in-plane thermal conductivity of 18.9 W m −1  K −1 , a 1250% improvement relative to the pure CNF film. Remarkably, this marked enhancement is achieved without compromising the film's high electrical insulation capability, as evidenced by a volume resistivity exceeding 10 11  Ω m, while still delivering a substantial tensile strength of 49.5 MPa. These synergistic enhancements are attributed to the optimized interfacial bonding, which effectively reduces thermal resistance and suppresses phonon scattering. This interface design strategy offers a promising pathway for developing advanced thermal management materials.
