Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are used as novel adsorption materials owing to their large surface area and tunable pore size. However, the lack of selectivity considerably limits their application. Consequently, designing functionalized MOFs with specific recognition abilities is essential for enhancing their adsorption performance. Herein, we synthesized a functionalized NH 2 -UiO-66 composite modified by molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP@NH 2 -UiO-66) via a one-step polymerization process in which NH 2 -UiO-66 and MIP were formed simultaneously. Results demonstrate that MIP@NH 2 -UiO-66 effectively recognized sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in complex matrices. The adsorption equilibrium was reached in only 30 min, and this fast SMX adsorption on MIP@NH 2 -UiO-66 was described by the Avrami kinetic model, which indicates a spontaneous and exothermic adsorption process. Within the pH range of 3.0–10.0, MIP@NH 2 -UiO-66 exhibited an optimal binding capacity for SMX, and the maximum adsorption of SMX was 68.36 mg g −1 at 25°C, which exceeded those of existing adsorption materials (< 60.10 mg g −1 ). Additionally, MIP@NH 2 -UiO-66 was regenerated for ∼17 cycles compared to less than eight cycles for the other adsorbents. MIP@NH 2 -UiO-66 effectively removed 90.58%–99.60% of SMX from river water, rainwater, soil, sediment, chicken, pork, and milk samples, with a relative standard deviation of less than 4.43%. The superior adsorption of SMX on MIP@NH 2 -UiO-66 was primarily driven by the synergistic effects of the imprinting sites, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic forces. The one-step polymerization method substantially simplified the synthesis process and reduced the costs, which are promising factors for the synthesis of MOFs with high selectivity.

Much research has focused on the removal of individual contaminants such as As(V) or Cr(VI) from wastewater. However, limited efforts have been devoted to their simultaneous removal in binary systems. This is largely due to the complexity of wastewater matrices and the similar chemical characteristics of As(V) and Cr(VI). In this study, La-modified UiO-66 was synthesized by a one-pot method and employed as a multifunctional adsorbent to simultaneously remove As(V) and Cr(VI) via batch experiments. Characterization results demonstrated that La was successfully grafted onto UiO-66 through Zr-ligand (O)-La and Zr-ligand (O)-Zr linkages, while the fcu structural topology and microporous nature of UiO-66 were well remained. For simultaneous uptake of As(V) and Cr(VI), a synergistic effect of Cr(VI) was observed on As(V) removal, whereas As(V) exhibited an inhibitory effect on Cr(VI) adsorption. Compared with the single component system, the adsorption capacity of As(V) in the binary system increased by approximately 26 %, while the adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) decreased by about 20 %. The enhanced uptake of As(V) was attributed to the formation of a new Cr As complex compound between adsorbed Cr(III) and As(V). In contrast, the inhibitory influence of As(V) on Cr(VI) adsorption was ascribed to the strong affinity of As(V) for the active adsorption sites. Overall, these results demonstrate that La-modified UiO-66 is a promising candidate for the simultaneous removal of As(V) and Cr(VI) in binary systems, particularly under conditions of elevated As(V) concentration.

The selective recovery of lithium from salt-lake brines using functionalized polyamide nanofiltration (NF) membranes offers a promising strategy to alleviate the global lithium resource shortage. However, the structural controllability of functional fillers and their interfacial compatibility remain critical challenges in constructing high-performance NF membranes. In this study, a polyamide NF membrane was modified with defect-engineered and gel-state UiO-66-NH 2 nanoparticles, combined with an external electric field, to achieve efficient Li + /Mg 2+ separation. By tuning the HCl/HAc ratio, the nucleation and growth of UiO-66-NH 2 were regulated, yielding gel-state nanoparticles with abundant defects (defect coordination number ~ 0.73), excellent dispersibility, and high protonation, facilitating interfacial integration with the polyamide matrix. In situ characterization revealed that defect-engineered and gel-state UiO-66-NH 2 enhanced the membrane's positive surface charge and formed a “spinal-like” microstructure. Under the optimal acid ratio, the nanoparticles promoted higher polyamide cross-linking, reducing the average effective pore size from 0.54 to 0.46 nm, enabling synergistic control of both physical and chemical membrane properties. With an applied electric field, monovalent ion dehydration and migration were accelerated, enhancing ion decoupling and achieving a separation factor of 83.87 for Li + /Mg 2+ at an applied current of 6 mA. This work demonstrates a triple synergistic mechanism involving interface regulation, structural optimization, and electric-field coupling, highlighting the pivotal role of gel-state defect-engineered MOFs in tuning membrane microstructure and surface charge. This finding provides new theoretical guidance and design strategies for efficient lithium recovery using electric-field assisted functional nanofiber membranes.

To overcome the limitation of low catalytic activity in nanozyme labels for immunoassay, this study proposed a heterovalent Co-doping strategy to construct the bimetallic Zr/Co-UiO-66-NH2 nanozyme. Compared to the undoped UiO-66-NH2, the resulting nanozyme exhibited a 14-fold enhancement in phosphatase-like catalytic efficiency (kcat/Km). Mechanistic investigations revealed that the activity enhancement was not only dependent on the high specific surface area and increased defects introduced by heterovalent Co doping, but also was attributed to the electronic synergy between Zr and Co. Furthermore, a fluorescent immunoassay method utilizing highly efficient Zr/Co-UiO-66-NH2 as the nanozyme label was developed for the ultrasensitive detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). This method achieved a broad linear detection range spanning 6 orders of magnitude (1 × 10–12 g/mL to 1 × 10–6 g/mL) and a detection limit as low as 0.74 × 10–12 g/mL. The high recovery rates (95.89%–99.31%) in serum samples demonstrate great potential for the detection of CEA in complex biological matrices.

The flexible ammonia sensor can detect the ammonia content in the air or the exhaled gas of humans, but the commonly used sensors have poor breathability and washability, so they are not suitable for direct contact with human skin. In this work, based on the excellent flexibility and permeability of nonwovens, UiO-66-NH 2 /MoS 2 @nonwoven (UMN) and UiO-66-NH 2 /MoS 2 /Ag@nonwoven (UMAN) gas sensors were prepared by loading self-prepared UiO-66-NH 2 /MoS 2 (UM) and UiO-66-NH 2 /MoS 2 /Ag (UMA) onto microfiber nonwovens. The results show that UMN and UMAN gas sensors exhibit high selectivity toward ammonia gas. The response values of UMN and UMAN demonstrate a consistent linear trend within the ammonia concentration range of 1–50 ppm and reach 43 % and 47 % at 1 ppm respectively. The response variations of the sensors before and after bending are below 4 %, demonstrating excellent bending stability. After washing for 24 h, the gas sensing performance shows nearly no change, indicating that they both have good reusability and washability. However, the sensors exhibit limited thermal and humidity stability. Given the challenges such as poor breathability and insufficient biocompatibility faced by traditional flexible gas sensors, UMN and UMAN sensors have emerged as highly promising alternatives with distinct advantages.

To address the issue of limited degradation efficiency due to rapid carrier recombination in piezoelectric catalysis, this study designed a ternary heterojunction structure of ZnO/CuO@UiO-66-NH 2 . A ZnO/CuO heterointerface was constructed on the surface of UiO-66-NH 2 via a hydrothermal method, forming a composite piezoelectric catalytic system with abundant active sites and enhanced built-in electric fields. Theoretical analysis indicated that UiO-66-NH 2 , as a carrier, not only significantly increased the specific surface area of the material but also cooperatively regulated the charge distribution in the heterojunction region. Under ultrasonic vibration, the piezoelectric potential generated by the ZnO/CuO heterojunction effectively drove carrier separation, thereby significantly enhancing the redox reaction efficiency. Under dark conditions, the 30-minute degradation rate of RhB by this material reached 99.7%, with a rate constant of 0.09435 min⁻¹, far superior to the pure ZnO/CuO system. Additionally, ZnO/CuO@UiO-66-NH 2 demonstrated excellent catalytic performance and cycling stability in the degradation of methyl orange and methylene blue. Band structure and radical trapping experiments confirmed that hydrogen radicals (·H) and superoxide radicals (·O 2 ⁻) were the main active species in the degradation process. This research provides new material ideas for the development of efficient and stable heterojunction piezoelectric catalysts and offers potential pathways for the construction of integrated systems for dye wastewater treatment and energy conversion. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) incorporating metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as fillers show attractive selectivity and permeability for gas separation. However, the performance improvement is restricted by undesirable interfacial interaction and inhomogeneous dispersion of MOFs in the membrane matrix. In this paper, amino-functionalized UIO-66 (U6N) with high porosity was employed as a filler and further regulated by a controlled plant polyphenol-induced surface modification strategy. The process involved the formation of tannic acid-iron(III) complex (TA-Fe(III)) on the U6N surface, which improved interfacial compatibility with the polyimide matrix while introducing abundant hydroxyl groups to enhance gas transport properties. Accordingly, the modified MMMs containing 30 wt.% U6N@TA-Fe(III) achieved optimized gas separation performance. Specifically, the CO 2 permeability increased to about 2495.9 Barrer with a CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 19.32, which exceeded the 2008 Robeson upper limit and showed an increase of 22.1% and 25.6%, respectively, compared to the MMMs embedded with unmodified U6N. Moreover, the improved dispersion of the U6N@TA-Fe(III) within the membrane structure is conducive to improving separation performance for CO 2 /N 2 and O 2 /N 2 . Therefore, this work provides a novel insight into the rational design of the MMMs via a facile modification strategy, which can further improve the gas separation performance of the MMMs.

In recent years, the escalating global demand for clean energy has underscored the urgency of developing high-efficiency fuel desulfurization technologies. This study reports the facile synthesis of a molded fiber-supported composite catalyst, POM@UiO-66-NH 2 @CF (PU N C), via impregnation, integrating polyoxometalates (POMs) with amino-functionalized metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) on cellulose fibers (CF). The catalyst delivers exceptional performance in ultra-deep oxidative desulfurization (ODS), enabled by systematic optimization of reaction parameters using response surface methodology (RSM) with a Box-Behnken design (BBD). Through RSM optimization and adjustment, the actual desulfurization conditions were determined as 66 °C, O/S = 7, 7 mL DMF, and 2 catalyst pieces and PU N C achieved a validated 99.26 % desulfurization efficiency for dibenzothiophene (DBT) in model fuels, demonstrating close agreement with theoretical predictions. Kinetic analysis revealed the ODS reaction conformed to a pseudo-first-order kinetic model with a low activation energy of 2.45 kJ/mol, while EPR spectroscopy confirmed ·O 2 − radicals as the dominant reactive species, highlighting a POM-mediated radical oxidation pathway. PU N C exhibited robust reusability, maintaining >95 % efficiency over 5 consecutive cycles. The catalyst’s performance is attributed to the synergistic architecture of MOF-fiber supports, where 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane (CPTMS) enables covalent bonding of UiO-66-NH 2 to CF, creating amine-rich sites for electrostatic POM immobilization and enhanced stability. This work showcases the synergy between structural design and RSM-driven optimization, offering innovative insights for developing high-efficiency, environmentally benign molded catalysts for ultra-deep ODS and related oxidative processes.

In this paper, UiO-66-NH 2 was synthesized by a solvothermal method. Two defects were induced by the introduction of an acid modifier and an iron source during synthesis. The effect of the acid modifier on the degree of defects and adsorption properties of the material was investigated by adjusting the type of acid modifier. The results showed that the addition of Fe and benzoic acid yielded the largest specific surface area in UiO-66-NH 2 with abundant defect structures. This enabled Fe-UiO-66-NH 2 -BA to achieve 78.83% arsenic removal within 60 s. The adsorption process followed pseudo-second kinetics and the Langmuir isothermal model. Notably, the adsorption capacity of Fe-UiO-66-NH 2 -BA for arsenic in wastewater at pH 11 (2010 mg/g) was superior to those of most of the reported MOF adsorbents. The excellent arsenic adsorption capacity can be attributed to the formation of free Lewis acid sites and ligand complexation by MOF deletion linkage defects, and the adsorbent can still maintain > 80% adsorption capacity after five cycles of regeneration. In conclusion, Fe-UiO-66-NH 2 -BA, as an efficient adsorbent for efficient capture of arsenic from wastewater, provides a new concept for water purification technology.

This work presents the design of UiO-66-PDA@TANI, a novel MOF-oligomer nanocomposite that synergistically integrates pH-triggered inhibitor release with redox-mediated passivation to enhance epoxy coating protection. Release studies revealed a 13-fold increase in alkaline-activated Zr 4+ /ligand release, while cyclic voltammetry and electron paramagnetic resonance analyses confirmed that heterogenous integration of UiO-66 improves the electron transfer efficiency of TANI. Potentiodynamic polarization tests demonstrated that UiO-66-PDA@TANI achieved a corrosion inhibition efficiency of 75.62% in saline solution within 24 h. Long-term EIS measurements showed superior barrier properties, with the composite epoxy coating exhibiting |Z| 0.01Hz = 1.85 × 10 10 Ω·cm 2 after 60 d of immersion, compared to 5.51 × 10 7 Ω·cm 2 for pure epoxy. Artificial defect experiments further revealed self-healing behavior, with an improvement efficiency of 229.67% after 48 h, indicating localized protection beyond that of pristine coatings. These findings demonstrate that the synergistic interplay between UiO-66 and TANI enables dual protection: rapid inhibitor delivery at corrosion sites via pH-induced framework disintegration and regeneration of passivation films via enhanced TANI redox cycling for long-term durability. This work introduces a previously unreported strategy that leverages UiO-66 for electron conduction-enhanced corrosion protection, offering fundamental design principles for pH/redox dual-responsive protective systems.

This study employed a pore-confined synthesis strategy to achieve the in situ growth of bovine serum albumin-capped copper nanoclusters (BSA-CuNCs) within the UiO-66 framework (BSA-CuNCs@UiO-66). This nanocomposite enables highly sensitive and specific detection of creatinine (CR). Results demonstrated that the spatial confinement imposed by UiO-66 induced aggregation of the BSA-CuNCs and suppressed non-radiative transitions, leading to an approximately 10-fold enhancement in fluorescence intensity and a 11-fold increase in quantum yield. Leveraging the specific adsorption and enrichment capability of the UiO-66 framework toward CR, the BSA-CuNCs@UiO-66 fluorescence probe exhibited significant fluorescence quenching upon exposure to CR, achieving a detection range of 50–1000 nM and a detection limit of 30.81 nM. This work presented a novel confinement engineering strategy utilizing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), establishing a new design paradigm for high-performance fluorescence probes with significant potential in bioanalytical applications.

A reflective optical fiber gas sensor was developed for the accurate detection of acetic acid gas concentrations in real time. This sensor comprises a multimode quartz optical fiber and a sensing unit coated with a material that selectively responds to acetic acid. The sensing unit consists of a light channel coated with a Ag film, on which a composite film of TiO 2 /functionalized zirconium metal-organic framework (UiO-66–2CF 3 ) is deposited. Upon absorbing acetic acid, the refractive index of the TiO 2 /UiO-66–2CF 3 film increases, enhancing the light absorption at 326 nm while reducing the reflectance. This decrease in the transmitted light intensity enables the accurate measurement of the environmental acetic acid concentration by detecting the difference between the output and input optical intensities. Experiments were performed to investigate the dependence of the sensor performance on the TiO 2 content in TiO 2 /UiO-66–2CF 3 , coating thickness, light incidence angle in the optical channel, and ambient temperature and humidity. In the range of 10–40 °C and 40–80 % RH, the sensor with 45 wt% TiO 2 in the composite, a coating thickness of 55 μm, and an incident angle of 45° yielded an acetic acid gas response sensitivity of 0.0007 absorbance unit/ppm, a response time of 315 s, detection limit of 4.29 ppm, and maximum relative error below 5.0 %. The incorporation of the –CF 3 group into UiO-66 endowed the sensor with excellent humidity immunity, a high selectivity for acetic acid, and long-term stability.
