Using tung oil as the raw material, a new bio-based prepolymer was successfully synthesized by reacting with acrylic-modified rosin (β-acryloyl nutrient ethyl) ester (ARA)/acrylic-2-hydroxyethyl ester (HEA) followed by the use of the above composite material as the matrix and then reacting with the active diluent (2-HEMA, TPGDA) and the photoinitiator TPO and Irgacure1173 to successfully synthesize a new type of bio-based prepolymer-acrylate-epoxy tung oil polypolymer (AETP). The tung oil monomer before and after the epoxy formation was compared by proton NMR spectroscopy, and the chemical structure of AETP was analyzed by Fourier transform spectroscopy. Tung oil has an acid value of 1.5 mg KOH per g, an epoxy value of 5.38%, an iodine value of 11.28 g/100 g, and a refractive index of n25 = 1.475. Composite-based 3D printing resins (like AETP) were cured using digital light treatment, while some samples were also post-treated via ultraviolet (UV) light treatment. The AETP-based 3D printing resin has excellent thermal and mechanical properties, and the viscosity of its system is 313 mPa s; exposure time 4.5 s; the tensile strength, flexural strength and flexural modulus were 62 MPA, 63.84 MPa and 916.708 MPa, respectively; Shore hardness was 80 HD and shrinkage was 4.00%. The good performance of the AETP-based 3D printing resin is attributed to the rigidity of their tightly crosslinked structure. This study pioneered a method for producing photoactive acrylates (e.g., tung oil-based acrylate oligomer resins) from renewable, low-cost biomass for light-curing 3D printing.

Formaldehyde is deemed to be an indispensable industrial product that has been widely applied in manufacture of resins, drugs, building materials, etc. It has been widely accepted that, nevertheless, residual formaldehyde will cause pathogen reactions, even leading to cancers like leukemia. Thus, a facile and efficient approach has been designed to achieve the determination of formaldehyde by ultraviolet and visible (UV–vis) spectrophotometry in liquid media. In detail, O-(carboxymethyl) hydroxylamine (C 2 H 5 NO 3 ·0.5HCl) is chosen as the detection reagent for the specific recognition of formaldehyde on account of its unique aminooxy (-O-NH 2 ) which can react with formaldehyde to form oxime bonds (O-N CH 2 ), accompanied with the only by-product of H 2 O. Likewise, this simple and sensitive detection approach based on the chemical detection reagent C 2 H 5 NO 3 ·0.5HCl can also be applied to the determination of other aldehyde homologs with carbonyl groups including acetaldehyde, acetone, benzaldehyde, 1, 4-phthalaldehyde. As a result, all the UV absorbances of analytes display remarkable linear detection relationships. The limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantitation (LOQ) values are in the range of 0.03–1.16 ppm and 0.03–5.81 ppm respectively, with RSDs of 3.27–3.75 %, evidencing the feasibility of our method to determine formaldehyde and its homologs by UV–vis spectrophotometry and auspicious prospects of practical applications.

Chloroacetonitriles (CANs) are highly toxic nitrogenous disinfection by-products (N-DBPs), which frequently appear in water supply systems and have attracted widespread attention. UV/persulfate (PS) is an effective method to degrade CANs. Bromide (Br − ) is widespread in aquatic environments and reacts with oxidative radicals to produce secondary reactive bromine species (RBS), which affects the degradation of CANs by UV/PS. It was found that the degradation of CANs was highly inhibited by Br − . The apparent first-order reaction rate constants of monochloroacetonitrile (MCAN), dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) and trichloroacetonitrile (TCAN) decreased from 2.63 × 10 −3 , 2.00 × 10 −3 and 8.66 × 10 −4 s −1 to 2.58 × 10 −4 , 1.61 × 10 −4 and 1.59 × 10 −4 s −1 , respectively after adding 20 μM of Br − . HO• was the main radicals contributing to the degradation of CANs when the concentration of Br − was less than 10 μM, compared with SO 4 •− and direct photolysis. When the concentration of Br − was up to 20 μM, the contributions of RBS accounted for 85.7%, 90.7% and 89.9% of the apparent degradation rate constants of CANs, respectively. During the reaction, about 65% of nitrogen atoms were transformed into NO 3 − by the C C bond cleavage and oxidation. The yields of Cl − by dechlorination reaction accounted for 83.5%, 71.0% and 41.2% of the chlorine contents in MCAN, DCAN and TCAN, respectively. It was verified that CANs react with free bromine (HOBr) to produce bromochloroacetonitrile (BCAN). DCAN and TCAN are hydrolyzed to produce corresponding haloacetamides (HAMs), which are further reacted with HOBr to produce bromodichloroacetic acid (BDCAA). Furthermore, the generation of bromate was also worth noting via the oxidation of Br − in the UV/PS system.

Soxhlet extraction method was used to extract imperatorin from Angelica dahurica, and the extraction ratio under different extraction condition was optimized to attain the best condition. Then, XAD-16 macroporous resin was selected as the optimal resin to boost the extraction ratio of imperatorin. Afterwards, the higher purity of imperatorin (96.84±0.2%) was separated by preparative HPLC system. Next, the photocatalytic reaction between the above imperatorin and collagen which the highest levels in skin was investigated using UV-vis spectroscopy, amino acid analysis and HPLC analysis. The results showed that imperatorin reacted with collagen only under ultraviolet light which caused the denaturation of collagen, and three new products were generated. The ultraviolet products were isolated by preparative HPLC system and separately detected by high-resolution mass spectrum. The possible UV photocatalytic reaction mechanism between imperatorin and collagen is that ultraviolet light induces the increase of the activity of the imperatorin to react with the tyrosine in the collagen, resulted in the denaturation of collagen and reestablish of the normal epidermal tissue in skin.

Lignin is an ideal substance for preparation of functional materials. Specifically, lignin nanospheres (LNPs) are formed by self-assembly of lignin molecules and show great application prospects in drug delivery, electrochemistry, catalysis, etc. At present, most superhydrophobic surfaces are mainly built using non-degradable inorganic particles and are still beset by defects such as poor environmental performance, easy aging, and low mechanical strength. In this study, an aqueous mixture containing LNPs, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was sprayed onto wood surfaces and then modified by 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltrichlorosilane (FOTS) to obtain a superhydrophobic surface. In the superhydrophobic surface, LNPs were used as the main structural materials instead of inorganic particles, CNC was used as a reinforcement material and PVA was used as an adhesive. The resulting superhydrophobic surface showed a water contact angle (WCA) of 162°, good robustness resistance and long UV resistance in which the superhydrophobicity was still retained after exposure to ultra-high UV light (power of 1000 W) for 7 h, providing more directions for high-value application of lignin.

Prolyl hydroxylase domain 2 (PHD2) is a key enzyme regulating the expression of hypoxia inducible factor (HIF). Its inhibitors can improve the expression of HIF and downstream genes, which can treat hypoxia-related diseases. Therefore, the establishment of a reliable PHD2 inhibitors screening method is of great significance for the drug development of hypoxia-related diseases. In this work, an accurate, rapid, and simple screening method for PHD2 inhibitors was introduced by capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE). In order to improve the detection sensitivity, the derivative reaction of α-ketoglutaric acid (α-OG) and 1,2-diaminobenzene (OPD) was used to enhance the UV absorption of α-OG (the substrate in the enzymatic reaction). The CZE method selected 20 mM Na 2 B 4 O 7 buffer (pH 9.0) as the separation buffer, +25 kV as the separation voltage, 25°C as the cartridge temperature, and 210 nm as the detection wavelength. Under this condition, the analysis of a single sample can be realized within 9 min. Compared with the existing reported methods, the present work can directly screen the PHD2 inhibitory activity of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) extracts, which is of significance for the target-purification of bioactive individual compounds from TCMs. Under the optimal conditions, the PHD2 inhibitor screening platform was successfully established, and it was found that 70% methanol/water extracts of Astragali Radix and Codonopsis pilosula had good PHD2 inhibitory activity. Furthermore, the present work provides a novel approach for screening the PHD2 inhibitory activity of TCM extracts and the discovery of anti-hypoxia bioactive compounds.

Ultraviolet–visible–near-infrared broad-band PDs have attracted great attention for imaging systems and optical communications. Previous UV–NIR PDs have mainly worked in a single band. UV–NIR dual-modal detectors, which maintain a greater light response through nonlinear light absorbance in the second mode, remain to be explored. Here, a CsPbI2Br dual-mode PD is reported for the first time. The light absorption, phase stability, and chemical stability of CsPbI2Br are enhanced by CsBr and H2O. The device shows (UV–vis)/NIR absorption through one-photon and two-photon absorption. The CsPbI2Br PD has excellent (UV–vis)/NIR dual-mode detection performance under ultraviolet (405 nm), visible (532 nm) and near-infrared (808 nm) illumination, respectively; the device has high responsivities of 160, 36, and 118 A/W, specific detectivities of 4.9 × 1011, 6.3 × 1010, and 2.1 × 1011 jones and response times of 5.5/6.8, 5.3/5.9, and 5.9/6.4 ms, respetively. This work provides a route for UV–NIR dual-mode detection and promotes the applications of these PDs in photoelectric devices for weak light and wide spectrum detection.

UV-peroxydisulfate (UV/PDS) oxidation is a promising technology to degrade organic pollutants. In this study, we found that nitrate (NO3–) could lead to the formation of toxic nitrophenolic byproducts during UV/PDS oxidation of natural organic matter (NOM). At a UV fluence of 4.49 × 105 mJ L–1, the formation of 4-nitrophenol, 4-hydroxy-3-nitrobenzoic acid, and 2,4-dinitrophenol reached 0.0084, 0.0324, and 0.0046 μM, respectively. NO2• produced from the photolysis of NO3– acted as the nitrating agent. Meanwhile, the phenolic moieties of NOM molecules were oxidized by SO4•– through single-electron transfer, giving rise to phenoxyl radicals. The phenoxyl radicals coupled with NO2• to generate nitrated byproducts. Although •OH was also formed in the UV/PDS process, theoretical computation suggests that the phenoxyl radicals were primarily ascribed to SO4•–, because •OH preferentially reacted with NOM via addition mechanism resulting in hydroxylated intermediates. In addition, the aromatic carboxyl moieties of NOM molecules could be decarboxylated upon reaction with SO4•– and transformed to phenolic intermediates, which also contributed to the nitrated byproducts formation. This study reveals a novel nitration mechanism that is specific to the UV/PDS process and raises concerns to the potential risks when the UV/PDS is applied to wastewaters with high levels of NO3–.

Dimetridazole (DMZ) is widely used as a veterinary antibiotic, but it is recalcitrant in the water environment. The residual of DMZ has raised widespread concern because of its harmful effects on human health and environmental safety. This work aimed to investigate the degradation of DMZ and the corresponding formation of halonitromethanes (HNMs) during the ultraviolet (UV)/chlorine process. The UV/chlorine process presented an excellent performance in DMZ degradation. The observed degradation rate constant of DMZ by UV/chlorine was 1.4 × 10 −1 min −1 . The hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and chlorine radicals (·Cl) were the predominant reactive species for DMZ degradation, and corresponding contributions were 79.8% and 13.7%, respectively. With the increase of free chlorine dosage, the degradation efficiency of DMZ firstly increased and then slightly decreased, while the formation of HNMs increased after 40 min UV/chlorine treatment. The higher degradation efficiency of DMZ was observed at acid circumstances, while higher HNMs formation was found at alkaline conditions due to base-catalyzed hydrolysis and less degradation of HNMs. The presences of Cl – , Br – , HCO 3 – and humic acid (HA) inhabited the degradation of DMZ. Furthermore, the possible degradation pathways of DMZ were proposed based on five intermediate products identified by UPLC/MS. Overall, the UV/chlorine was an efficient method for DMZ removal, but the formation of HNMs from DMZ should be evaluated before using UV/chlorine.

The colonization of bacteria and biofilm formation on the surface of medical devices is one of the main causes of nosocomial infections. The development of antimicrobial functional materials with robust and universal properties has been a hot research topic in this field. In this paper, a novel type of polyurethane composite coating was developed by a complementary combination of polyurethane and antibacterial agents. A photocurable anionic waterborne polyurethane was first synthesized using polycarbonate diol (PCDL), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), 2,2-dimethylolpropionic acid (DMPA), and hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) as raw materials. Polyurethane composite coatings were prepared by associating cationic antibacterial agents with polyurethane molecules through electrostatic assembly, hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonding, and the mechanical properties, adhesion, and antibacterial properties of the polyurethane composite coatings were studied. The results showed that the polyurethane composite coatings had good mechanical properties, and the introduction of cationic antibacterial agents significantly improved the antibacterial ability of the polyurethane material. The antibacterial efficiency of polyurethane against E. coli and S. aureus reached 99% and exhibited durable antibacterial performance as well. Moreover, the polyurethane composite coatings showed excellent adhesion to a variety of substrates, demonstrating their potential application as a universal antimicrobial coating in the medical field. Highlights • Construction of polyurethane composite with electrostatic self-assembly method. • Surface coating technology with fast curing, robustness, and universality. • Excellent mechanical and antibacterial properties of composite coatings.

Inspired by the Chinese wood oil coating on umbrella, an ionic polymer layer is coated onto hybrid hydrogels to realize monitoring of the solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation dose in aqueous environments. The hybrid hydrogels are synthesized by introducing the photocatalyst graphitic-carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets into the radically polymerized hydrogels from the monomer di(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (MA) and oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (MA300). Thus, g-C3N4 are physically embedded in the hydrogels. Owing to the existence of inorganic nanoparticles (g-C3N4 nanosheets) and hydrogels, the obtained hydrogels containing g-C3N4 nanosheets are named as hybrid hydrogels. Because g-C3N4 can decompose the dye methylene blue (MB) by photodegradation and the decomposition capability is correlated to the absorbed UV radiation dose from the sunshine, the solar UV radiation dose can be easily traced by the discoloration extent of dyed hybrid hydrogels. To avoid the possible dye leakage during aquatic sports activities, such as swimming in a lake or surfing in the seaside, the acetamide/zinc perchlorate hexahydrate (AC/ZPH)-based ionic polymer is coated onto the hybrid hydrogels. Owing to the combined effects of the dense structure as well as the existence of positive and negative ions in the AC/ZPH layer, the coated hybrid hydrogels present excellent resistance against dye leakage. To overcome the frangibility of the hydrogels, microfiber nonwoven fabrics (MFNF) are used as a substrate for the sensor. The obtained hybrid hydrogel-based UV radiation monitor presents excellent dye leakage resistance as well as flexibility and strength. Thus, it is very suitable for wearable devices to monitor skin health in the aqueous environment under sunshine.

Micropollutant (MP) abatement efficiencies are critical information for optimizing water treatment process for cost-effective operations. Nevertheless, due to the vast number of MPs in real water matrices, it is infeasible to measure their abatement efficiencies individually in practical applications. In this study, a probe compound-based kinetic model was developed for generalized prediction of MP abatement in various water matrices by the ultraviolet (UV)/chlorine process. The results show that by measuring the depletion of three probe compounds (ibuprofen, primidone, and dimetridazole) spiked in the water matrix, the exposures of main reactive chlorine species (RCS including chlorine radicals (Cl•), dichloride radicals ( Cl 2 − • ) and chlorine oxide radicals (ClO•)) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) during the UV/chlorine process could be calculated using the model. Based on the determined exposures, the abatement efficiencies of various MPs in different water matrices (e.g., surface water, groundwater, and wastewater) could generally be predicted with acceptable accuracy by the model without prior water-specific calibration. In addition, the relative contribution of UV photolysis and oxidation with active chlorine, RCS, and •OH to MP abatement could be quantitatively simulated using the model to clarify the abatement mechanism of MPs during the UV/chlorine process. The probe-based kinetic model can thus offer a useful tool to guide practical water and wastewater treatment for MP abatement and to explore the mechanism of UV/chlorine process.
