Facilely fabricating mesoporous nanocrystalline Ce–Zr solid solution supported CuO-based catalysts with advanced low-temperature activity toward CO oxidation

Yan Cui,Leilei Xu,Mindong Chen,Xinbo Lian,Cai-e Wu,Bo Yang,Zhichao Miao,Fagen Wang,Xun Hu

A series of mesoporous nanocrystalline Ce–Zr solid solutions with different Ce/Zr ratios were successfully synthesized by the evaporation-induced self-assembly strategy, and were employed as catalytic supports of CuO-based catalysts for CO oxidation. These supports and catalysts were systematically characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), N2 physisorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersed spectroscopy (EDS) mapping, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H2 temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), CO2 temperature programmed desorption (CO2-TPD), etc. The catalytic performances toward CO oxidation had been carefully evaluated over these CuO-based catalysts. The effects of various influencing factors, such as the Ce/Zr ratio, mesostructure, redox properties of the support, CuO loading amount and calcination temperature, on the low-temperature catalytic activity had been carefully investigated. The results showed that the catalyst supported on the support with a Ce/Zr ratio of 80/20 exhibited the highest catalytic activity. It was also found that the Ce–Zr solid solution mesoporous catalysts exhibited much higher catalytic activity than the counterparts without evident mesostructure, demonstrating the advantages of the mesoporous catalysts by providing more accessible catalytically active sites. Besides, the mesoporous Ce–Zr solid solution-supported catalysts with excellent redox properties displayed much better catalytic performances than the commercial γ-Al2O3-supported catalyst. The kinetic study also indicated that the apparent activation energy of the CO oxidation process was greatly affected by the Ce/Zr ratio, mesostructure, and redox properties of the support. Overall, the present CuO-based catalysts with mesoporous nanocrystalline Ce–Zr solid solutions as supports were considered as a series of promising catalysts for CO oxidation.

Microstructure and ablation properties of C/C-Zr-Si-O composites prepared by carbothermal reduction of hydrothermal co-deposited oxides

Haibo Ouyang,Guibiao Li,Cuiyan Li,Jianfeng Huang,Jie Fei,Jing Lu

C/C-Zr-Si-O composites were prepared by carbothermal reduction of hydrothermal co-deposited ZrO 2 , SiO 2 , and C. The bulk density of composites reached 1.71 g/cm 3 with 8 cycles of co-deposition. The matrix of the composites includes ZrC, SiC, ZrO 2 , and SiO 2 with fine grain size (300–500 nm) and homogeneous distribution. The mass and linear ablation rate of C/C-Zr-Si-O composites were 0.112 mg/cm 2 ·s and 0.46 μm/s, respectively, under a plasma flame for 120 s. The attractive ablation resistance of the composites resulted from its unique structure, which tends to form a continuous ZrO 2 -SiO 2 glass layer in the ablation center, a layer of SiO 2 -ZrO 2 bubbles in the transition region, and fluffy SiO 2 nanowires layer in the heat-affected region. These ablation layers were barriers to restrain the diffusion of oxidative gas and heat. The C/C-Zr-Si-O composites provide an alternative ceramics system with attractive ablation resistance, while carbothermal reduction of hydrothermal co-deposited oxides is a feasible method for the structural design of carbon fiber reinforced ultra-high temperature ceramic.

Investigation on adhesion strength and corrosion resistance of Ti-Zr aminotrimethylene phosphonic acid composite conversion coating on 7A52 aluminum alloy

Qi Liu,Xiaoming Cao,An Du,Ruina Ma,Xiaoran Zhang,Tingting Shi,Yongzhe Fan,Xue Zhao

In this paper, a chromate free conversion coating based on titanium/zirconium salts and aminotrimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP) was prepared on 7A52 aluminum alloy. The morphology and composition of conversion coating were investigated by test measurements of SEM、EDS、XRD and FT-IR. The adhesion strength between aluminum matrix and subsequent epoxy primer was tested directly. The roughness and wettability of conversion coating were also detected to indirectly characterize the adhesion strength from another side. The electrochemical tests and neutral salt spray tests were also conducted to measure the corrosion resistance of the prepared conversion coating. Results reveal that a uniform and dense conversion coating consisted by metal oxides and other salts is obtained on the surface of 7A52 aluminum alloy. Significantly, the adhesion strength between matrix and epoxy primer increases from 7.97 MPa to 16.23 MPa, which dues to the increase of surface roughness and the improvement of wettability. In addition, the neutral salt spray test time of the conversion coating reaches as long as 120 h. Three orders of magnitudes decrease of current density proves the excellent corrosion resistance of conversion coating, which is also confirmed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy test. This dues to the barrier property of conversion coating, preventing the corrosive solution to have a direct contact with aluminum matrix. Anyhow, both the adhesion strength and corrosion resistance are greatly reinforced by the existence of conversion coating.

Catalytic conversion of furfural to methyl levulinate in a single-step route over Zr/SBA-15 in near-critical methanol

Hao Chen,Houhang Ruan,Xilei Lu,Jie Fu,Timothy Langrish,Xiuyang Lu

In the present study, an economic and environmentally friendly bi-functional catalyst, Zr-SBA-15, has been prepared to develop a single-step process for synthesis of methyl levulinate (MLA) directly from furfural (FAL) in near-critical methanol without added H 2 . The presence of Zr in SBA-15, the structure of the Zr-SBA-15 catalyst, and its physical properties have been determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N 2 adsorption and desorption (N 2 -BET) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Zr-SBA-15 catalyst has high activity for the production of MLA and good reusability. A possible reaction pathway containing two possible reaction pathways during this single-step synthesis of MLA has been proposed: the FAL has been transformed to β-Methoxy-2-furanethanol (MFE) and 2-Furfuryl methyl ether first, which then have been converted to MLA, and the conversion of FAL to MFE has been much easier and faster than that to 2-FME, which may be the major reaction pathway. The SBA-15 has given high activity for the conversion of FAL to MFE, and the incorporation of Zr has converted the MFE to MLA efficiently. The reaction of FAL to MFE to MLA has been found to be the dominant reaction. Finally, the catalyst has shown good reusability for at least five times without any reduction in the catalytic activity.

Component/Stimulus-Dependent Multi-Exciton Emission in Zr(IV)-Based Organic Metal Halides Triggered by Supramolecular Assembly and Antimony Doping

Hui Peng,Wei Tian,Qilin Wei,Linghang Kong,Guang Dai,Jialong Zhao,Bingsuo Zou

Recently, Sb 3+ -activated 0D Zr(IV)-based metal halides have gained enormous attention for their unique optical properties. However, realizing efficient white emission and multiple reversible emissions in a single system remains a great challenge. Parallelly, the currently reported Sb 3+ -activated Zr(IV)-based organic metal halides are mainly through aimless regulation of the type of A-site organic cations, severely limiting their development. Herein, all-inorganic Cs 2 ZrCl 6 :Sb 3+ is employed as the conformational model, three different compounds of Sb 3+ -doped [18-crown-6@A] 2 ZrCl 6 (A = K, Rb, Cs) are developed via supramolecular assembly. All compounds show efficient tunable white emission with luminous efficiency of 91.28% for [18-crown-6@K] 2 ZrCl 6 :Sb 3+ , 84.84% for [18-crown-6@Rb] 2 ZrCl 6 :Sb 3+ , and 78.63% for [18-crown-6@Cs] 2 ZrCl 6 :Sb 3+ , which shall stem from Sb 3+ -induced multi-exciton emission in [SbCl 6 ] 3− octahedron. Particularly, the strong supramolecular interaction can enhance the structural rigidity and suppress nonradiative transitions, which is the dominated reason for [18-crown-6@A] 2 ZrCl 6 :Sb 3+ exhibits efficient emission. The component/excitation/temperature/moisture-dependent multiple reversible PL switching characteristics are observed in Sb 3+ -doped [18-crown-6@A] 2 ZrCl 6 , which allows to demonstrate their applications in advanced optical anti-counterfeiting and information encryption. Moreover, a single-component white light-emitting diode is also fabricated, which shows a high color rendering index of 96.1. Therefore, the work provides a feasible scheme for designing organic Zr(IV) halides with fascinating optical properties.

Bimetallic UiO-66(Zr/Ce) MOF encapsulated reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite for voltametric detection of trace Lomefloxacin residues in milk

Tianyu Wang,Wenyan Guo,Yonghui Xia,Yuefang Zhu,Li Chen,Yafeng Zhang,Guangli Li

The abuse and persistent use of Lomefloxacin (LOM) produces residues that deteriorate the ecological environment and endanger human health. Therefore, it is highly urgent to establish a simple and reliable method for the determination of LOM to guarantee food safety. Herein, a sensitive voltametric sensor based on bimetallic UiO-66(Zr/Ce) MOF/reduced graphene oxide (UiO-66 (Zr/Ce)/rGO) was fabricated for the determination of trace LOM residues in milk. The UiO-66(Zr/Ce)/rGO increased the electroactive surface area and lowered the charge transfer resistance. Due to the synergistic interactions between UiO-66(Zr/Ce) MOFs with good electrocatalytic activity and rGO nanosheets with high electrical conductivity, the UiO-66(Zr/Ce)/rGO/GCE exhibited the highest peak current response of LOM, 4.2-fold higher than the bare GCE. Consequently, the UiO-66(Zr/Ce)/rGO showed remarkably electrocatalytic activity for LOM oxidation with two broad linear detection ranges (0.03 – 2.0 μM and 2.0 – 30 μM), high sensitivities (5.1254 and 0.2198 μM μA −1 ), and a low detection limit (5.0 nM). The UiO-66(Zr/Ce)/rGO exhibited strong anti-interfering ability against potential interfering species even at high concentration, and maintained robust voltametric responses up to 25 days. Moreover, the UiO-66(Zr/Ce)/rGO/GCE achieved accurate determination of trace LOM residues in liquid milk with good recovery (96.11 − 103.2 %) and highly consistent sensitivity with that in PBS.

Construction of a sensitive electrochemical biosensor for detecting protein kinase A activity based on NH2-Zr-MOF@Thi signal amplification

Xue Men,Rong Li,Aiwen Su,Yanli Zhang,Lian-Xun Gao,Chengxin Wu,Hongbin Wang,Wenrong Yang,Pengfei Pang

Protein kinase A (PKA) plays a significant role in the regulation of biological activities by the phosphorylation of the specific proteins or substrate peptides. The highly sensitive and reusable electrochemical biosensor has been developed to detect PKA activity based on the specific coordination between Zr 4+ and phosphate group. In this strategy, the specially designed substrate peptide can be anchored on the surface of gold electrode by Au-S bond. In the presence of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and PKA, the substrate peptide is phosphorylated. Due to the large surface area of MOF and rich Zr 4+ active sites, signal molecule Thionine (Thi) can be absorbed into the cavity of NH 2 -Zr-MOF by the electrostatic interaction to form NH 2 -Zr-MOF@Thi signal probe. The phosphorylated peptide is linked to NH 2 -Zr-MOF@Thi probe because of the strong coordination interaction between Zr 4+ and phosphate group. Therefore, the number of Thi close to the electrode surface is increased and the response signal experiences amplification, markedly enhancing the sensitivity of the detection of PKA activity, which provides an excellent electrochemical sensing platform for PKA activity detection. The response signal of the electrochemical biosensor is proportional to the logarithm of PKA concentration, ranging from 0.05 U mL −1 to 100 U mL −1 , and the limit of detection of this biosensor for PKA is 0.017 U mL −1 when the signal-to-noise ratio is 3. In particular, the proposed method can selectively distinguish the target from other interferents, and can be used to screen potential small molecule inhibitors and detect PKA activity in complex cell samples. Therefore, the developed electrochemical biosensor can be used as a new way for the determination of PKA activity and the screening of its inhibitors in the future.

Synthesis and luminescence properties of Sr(1−x−y−z)MoO4:xEu3+, yBi3+, zR+ (R+ = Li+, Na+, and K+) phosphors

Renping Cao,Kangbin Chen,Qianglin Hu,Wensheng Li,Hui Ao,Chunyan Cao,Tao Liang

A series of Sr (1 − x − y − z ) MoO 4 : x Eu 3+ , y Bi 3+ , z R + (R +   =   Li + , Na + , and K + ) phosphors are prepared through solid-state reaction method in air. Eu 3+ doped SrMoO 4 phosphor can show red emission at ∼616   nm under excitation 275   nm and 397   nm light due to the 5 D 0   →   7 F 2 transition of Eu 3+ ion, and its emission intensity can be enhanced after co-doping Bi 3+ owing to energy transfer between Bi 3+ and Eu 3+ ions. The mechanism of energy transfer is discussed by the schematic energy level diagrams of Bi 3+ and Eu 3+ ions. The optimal composition in Eu 3+ and Bi 3+ co-doped SrMoO 4 phosphors is determined to be (Sr 0.92 Eu 0.05 Bi 0.03 )MoO 4 . The emission intensity of SrMoO 4 :Eu 3+ , Bi 3+ phosphor is found to be further improved by using Li + , Na + , and K + ions as charge compensators. These experiment results in the paper are helpful to develop novel and high-efficiency phosphors for white light-emitting diodes.

Enhanced copper pyrophosphate complex removal from high salty wastewater by using nanoconfined Ti-Zr binary metallic oxides: Multivariate complexation mechanism

Yu Hu,Xin Li,Xiaolin Zhang,Weiming Zhang,Bingcai Pan,Ming Hua

The salt ions (typically > 1000 mg/L) present in copper plating wastewater limit the application of ion exchange in the deep treatment of copper complexes (such as copper-pyrophosphate (Cu-PPi)). Metal nanoparticle immobilization is an effective method, and bimetallic nanoparticles have more potential than monometallic ones. In this study, bimetallic nanocomposite Ti-Zr-201 was successfully synthesized by confining Ti-Zr oxide nanoparticles in the pores of anion exchange polymer (D201). The obtained new adsorbent Ti-Zr-201 with bimetallic doped structure had more active sites (7.22 mmol/g), higher hydroxyl content (3.51 × 10 22 OH/ nm 2 ) and larger specific surface area (31.65 m 2 /g) than monometallic nanocomposite adsorbents (Zr-201 and Ti-201). The results showed that Ti-Zr-201 has better Cu-PPi adsorption capacity (24.82 mg Cu/g) than Zr-201 (21.48 mg Cu/g) and Ti-201 (21.71 mg Cu/g) in the high salt water (2000 mg/L NO 3 – ). Further mechanistic studies revealed that Cu-PPi removal as a whole was mainly realized via ternary complexation (Ti/Zr-O-Cu-PPi of Type-A, Ti/Zr-O-PPi-Cu of Type-B) and quaternary complexation (Ti/Zr-O-PPi-Cu-PPi of Type-B) both formed during the adsorption. The saturated Ti-Zr-201 can be regenerated more than 90% rapidly and had good stability. Moreover, the novel adsorbent also had a excellent removal effect on several other phosphorous copper complexes (tripolyphosphate, methyl dihydrogen phosphate, etc.). Therefore, the nanocomposite Ti-Zr-201 exhibited promising application on the deep removal of complex-state Cu with phosphorus ligands from high salty wastewater.

Defect Engineering Zr-MOF-Endowed Activity-Dimension Dual-Sieving Strategy for Anti-acid Recognition of Real Phosphoryl Fluoride Nerve Agents

Runqiang Zang,Yuan Liu,Yihang Wang,Lu Feng,Yuansheng Ge,Molin Qin,Yuwan Du,Jinliang Ning,Xiaowei Ma,Xincun Dou

Defect-engineering-involved metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been highly valued in many fields due to the enhanced porosity and abundant active sites, but how the systematic modulation on deficiency influencing fluorescent sensing performance is still in its infancy. Here, systematic defect-engineering of MOF-525 is used to modulate the exposure of zirconium (Zr) clusters and the sieving capability of inner channels, enabling precise fluorescent sensing of phosphoryl fluoride nerve agents with specific chemical activity and molecular dimensions. Controllable defects transformed the localized emission of porphyrin into ligand-metal charge transferring (LMCT) due to the gradual loss of the ligand molecules, which is interrupted upon the coordination of nerve agents, triggering a red turn-on fluorescence. Thus, the defective MOF-525 with 60% deficiency effectively discriminates the phosphoryl fluoride nerve agents (e.g., sarin, soman) from similar substances (e.g., tabun, venomous agent X) due to synergistic sieving effect of chemical activity and molecular dimension. It exhibits highly sensitive (0.96 n m /3.8 ppb), rapid (<1 s) response toward target nerve agents and is robust to the environmental interference from the acidic, humid and common fluorescent substances. This work enhances understanding of defect-engineering MOFs and the correpsonding luminescent behavior, paving a new avenue for sensing strategy of trace real nerve agent vapor.

Facile Preparation of Mixed-Matrix Membrane for Highly Selective Separation of CO2 via a Defected Zr-MOF Fluorination-Modified Strategy

Jiacheng Zhang,Xi Sun,Junhao Xin,Li Wang,Yong Fan,Jifu Zheng,Shenghai Li,Jianing Xu,Nanwen Li,Suobo Zhang

To address increasing climate deterioration, it is of great value to prepare highly permselective separation membranes for CO2 enrichment and separation. In this study, zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) containing defective structures (defected-UiO-66-NH2, D-UN) with a high volume yield (12 g L–1 in a single batch) were prepared at room temperature for the first time using a simple green-synthesis strategy. After the modification with pentafluorobenzaldehyde, the fluorine-containing D-UN (named F-g-UN) nanoparticles showed the characteristics of local and dense distribution of fluorine elements. Due to the optimized CO2 affinity and improved dispersion of fluorination modification, the prepared mixed-matrix membrane (MMM) F-g-UN@AO-PIM-1 achieved synergistic improvement in CO2 permeability and selectivity, exceeding the 2008 Robeson upper bound (CO2 664.1 Barrer and CO2/CH4 34.2) and the 2018 binary CO2/CH4 mixed-gas upper bound (CO2/CH4 28.7). The substantial cause was the introduction of fluorine species, verified by relevant experiments and mechanism analyses such as CO2 adsorption. This work proves the feasibility of using crystal defect engineering and post-treatment strategies to enhance separation functions and offers new insights into designing efficient and low-cost MMMs for gas separation, promoting their application in separation membranes including but not limited to gas separation.

Inkless printing and advanced dynamic information anti-counterfeiting via photochromic system based on solid-state Zr/Ti-MOF@WO3 heterojunctions

Bingbing Cui,Guodong Fu

Given that heterojunction engineering is an effective method for improving the separation efficiency of photoexcited electrons in WO 3 -based photochromic systems, a series of solid-state photochromic Zr/Ti-MOF@WO 3 heterojunctions prepared via a facile hydrothermal strategy, where Zr/Ti-MOF with photosensitivity and chemical stability was selected as template to load WO 3 . Zr/Ti-MOF@WO 3 heterojunctions were verified as nanoparticles filled with thin layer structure and WO 3 was diffused into the Zr/Ti-MOF planar. The appropriate conductive band energies facilitate the transport of photostimulated electrons from Zr/Ti-MOF to WO 3 , resulting in a fast photresponse in color changes (it only takes 1 s). In addition, a carrier for information storage and data dynamic encryption was developed on the basis of the photochromic Zr/Ti-MOF@WO 3 heterojunctions. This work presents a promising way to improve the electron/holes separation efficiency by constructing unique heterojunctions and further explore novel WO 3 -based photochromic systems and broaden their applications in rewritable media and data security.
