Thermoresponsive and magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers based on iron oxide encapsulated carbon nanotubes as a matrix for the selective adsorption and controlled release of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol

Jianming Pan,Yijie Yin,Yunlei Zhang,Runrun Wu,Xiaohui Dai,Yongsheng Yan

Thermoresponsive and magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (TMMIPs) based on magnetic carbon nanotubes (MCNTs) were prepared and applied to the switched recognition and controlled release of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol (2,4,5-TCP) from aqueous solution. In this study, MCNTs were first synthesized via the encapsulation of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles into the tunnel of carbon nanotubes by a wet impregnation technology. Then, the TMMIPs were synthesized with N -isopropyl acrylamide as a thermal functional monomer by free-radical polymerization. The magnetic sensitivity and stability of the prepared materials were tested with a vibrating sample magnetometer (saturation magnetization = 1.4 emu/g) and atomic absorption spectrophotometer (in the pH range 3.0–8.0), respectively. The thermoresponsive properties of the TMMIPs were evaluated by two means, including the results of ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy and the controlled release of 2,4,5-TCP at 30 and 40°C, respectively. The effects of the pH, initial concentration, and contact time on adsorption were examined with batch mode experiments, and several other compounds were selected as model analytes to evaluate the selective recognition performance of the TMMIPs. This demonstrated that the TMMIPs had a higher affinity for 2,4,5-TCP than did the thermoresponsive and magnetic nonimprinted polymers. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Chitosan and β-Cyclodextrin-epichlorohydrin Polymer Composite Film as a Plant Healthcare Material for Carbendazim-Controlled Release to Protect Rape against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary

Delong Wang,Mingchen Jia,Lanying Wang,Shuang Song,Juntao Feng,Xing Zhang

The influence of β-cyclodextrin-epichlorohydrin (β-CD-EP) polymers on the improvement of the solubility and antifungal activity of carbendazim has been investigated. Meanwhile, the potential of the chitosan and β-CD-EP composite film used as a plant healthcare material for carbendazim-controlled release to protect rape againstSclerotinia sclerotiorum(Lib.) de Bary has been evaluated. β-CD-EP-1 and 2 (β-CD content, 750 mg/g and 440 mg/g, respectively) were found to significantly improve the solubility of the guest molecule carbendazim (17.9 and 18.5 times, respectively) and the 1:1 stoichiometry of the host-guest was confirmed by the Job’s plot. A slight synergism was observed for the β-CD-EP/carbendazim complex againstS. sclerotiorum(Lib.) de Bary, indicating an enhancement to the bioavailability of carbendazim. The in vitro release studies revealed that β-CD-EP polymers could efficiently modulate carbendazim release behaviors, such as the release retard and rate. The in vivo efficacy experiments demonstrated that the β-CD-EP/carbendazim and chitosan composite film could significantly prolong the effective duration of carbendazim at a concentration of 100 μg/mL compared with spraying carbendazim at 500 μg/mL. Thereby, a highly useful and strategic concept in plant disease control by a plant healthcare material—the chitosan and polymeric β-CD-EP composite film—is provided, which could also serve as a concept for related plant diseases.Keywords:β-cyclodextrin-epichlorohydrin;chitosan film;antifungal activity;controlled release;Sclerotinia sclerotiorum(Lib.) de Bary

The role of carboxyl group of pressure sensitive adhesive in controlled release of propranolol in transdermal patch: Quantitative determination of ionic interaction and molecular mechanism characterization

Degong Yang,Xiaocao Wan,Peng Quan,Chao Liu,Liang Fang

Acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are widely used in transdermal drug delivery system (TDDS). However, there was little research about the quantitative relationship between drug release and drug-PSAs interaction. In this study, five acrylic PSAs with different molar fraction of carboxyl group were designed and synthesized. Propranolol (PRO) was used as model drug to evaluate release profiles in the PSAs in vitro and in vivo . The drug release percent in the PSAs were 81.66, 78.22, 51.66, 21.81 and 11.73%, and their release behaviors were decreased with carboxyl group content of PSAs. Furthermore, it was found that quantity of carboxyl group of PSAs was equal to residual drug by the quantitative determination. In addition, the ionic interaction between PRO and PSAs was confirmed by FT-IR and MDSC results qualitatively. Using the FT-IR, MDSC, Flory-Huggins interaction parameters and molecular dynamic simulation, interaction strength between drug and PSAs was determined quantitatively, which demonstrated that the drug release amount decreased linearly with interaction strength. Based on above results, we proposed that the PRO was possibly binding to the carboxyl group of PSAs one-by-one, which provided references for the accurate design of TDDS.

An Iron-Based Metal–Organic Framework as Nanocarrier for Lambda-Cyhalothrin Delivery: pH-Responsive Controlled Release, Enhanced Leaf Adhesion, and Prolonged Duration Period against Culex pipiens pallens

Rong Zhao,Wei Jia,Youfa Jiang,Xiaoju Wu,Xuefeng Jiang,Saijie Song,Jun Zhang,He Shen,Jian Shen

Lambda-Cyhalothrin (LC) is a high-efficiency and broad-spectrum insecticide. However, due to its poor water dispersion stability and unstable efficacy, it has many problems in practical applications. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop new formulations with stability, low toxicity, and environmental friendliness to overcome the drawbacks of traditional pesticide formulations. This study designed an iron-based metal–organic framework (MIL-101(Fe)) as a nanocarrier for the loading of LC and then surface modified it with polydopamine (PDA) to form the nanopesticide PDA-LC-MIL. The results showed that PDA-LC-MIL has good stability and can achieve controlled release of pesticide by adjusting the pH value. In addition, it also has a good leaf affinity and can effectively adhere on crop leaves, improving the utilization rate of pesticides. The insecticidal experimental results indicate that PDA-LC-MIL has significantly improved sustained insecticidal activity. PDA-LC-MIL also has good biocompatibility and shows no significant inhibitory effect on seed germination and seedling growth of Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek and maize. Therefore, we firmly believe that MIL-based nanopesticides will have broad application prospects in the field of green pesticides and modern agriculture.

A new temperature-responsive controlled-release pesticide formulation – poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) modified graphene oxide as the nanocarrier for lambda-cyhalothrin delivery and their application in pesticide transportation

Yuli Wang,Saijie Song,Xiaohong Chu,Wenli Feng,Jie Li,Xinrong Huang,Ninglin Zhou,Jian Shen

In recent years, stimuli-responsive controlled-release pesticide formulations have drawn extensive as they show huge potential in the practical application of agriculture. Herein, a multifunctional composite nanocarrier was prepared by our group, Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) modified graphene oxide (PNIPAm-GO), this is a temperature-responsive release pesticide formulation that can regulate pesticide release based on the temperature change. Lambda-cyhalothrin (LC) was loaded on PNIPAm-GO nanocomposite carrier via a simple physisorption process and LC@PNIPAm-GO exhibited temperature-responsive controlled release performance leading to release of LC at a specified temperature and extended its persisted release time. In addition, the LC@PNIPAm-GO controlled-release pesticide formulations showed both good water solubility and dispersion stability while its anti-UV property. Furthermore, we also assessed the biological safety of LC@PNIPAm-GO and proved that PNIPAm-GO is non-toxic. The study of this temperature-responsive pesticide formulation has promoted the development of intelligent pesticide formulations to great extent.

Molecular mechanism of ion-pair releasing from acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive containing carboxyl group: Roles of doubly ionic hydrogen bond in the controlled release process of bisoprolol ion-pair

Hanqing Zhao,Chao Liu,Degong Yang,Xiaocao Wan,Rui Shang,Peng Quan,Liang Fang

Though ion-pair strategy has been employed as an effective and promising method for controlling transdermal delivery of drugs, investigations into the underlying mechanisms involved in the controlled release process of ion-pairs are still limited. In the present study, a brand-new controlled release system combining acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive containing carboxyl group (carboxylic PSA) with ion-pair strategy was developed, and the molecular mechanism of ion-pair releasing from carboxylic PSA was systemically elucidated. Bisoprolol (BSP) and bisoprolol-lauric acid ion-pair (BSP-C 12 ) were chosen as model drugs. Carboxylic PSA was designed and synthesized. Effect of ion-pair on controlling BSP release from carboxylic PSA was evaluated by in vitro drug release study, in vitro skin permeation study and pharmacokinetic study. Molecular mobility of PSA, along with the strength of drug-PSA interaction was evaluated by thermal analysis and dielectric spectroscopy . Molecular details of drug-PSA interaction were identified by FTIR , XPS and Raman. Roles of drug-PSA interaction in the controlled release process were clarified by molecular modeling. Results showed that BSP-C 12 patch demonstrated a controlled release drug plasma profile, with lower C max (193 ± 63 ng/mL) and longer MRT (19.9 ± 3.4 h) compared to BSP patch ( C max,BSP  = 450 ± 28 ng/mL, MRT BSP  = 7.9 ± 0.9 h). Besides, there was no significant difference between the AUC of BSP-C 12 and BSP patch. It turned out that instead of PSA molecular mobility, molecular interaction between ion-pair and PSA played a dominant role in the controlled release process of BSP: as illustrated by FTIR , Raman and molecular docking, the ionic interaction between BSP-C 12 and PSA determined the amount of BSP released, namely the thermodynamic process; while the doubly ionic hydrogen bond between BSP-C 12 and PSA-COO – controlled the release rate, which was the kinetic process. In conclusion, it was found that the doubly ionic hydrogen bond formed between carboxylic PSA and ion-pair controlled the release profile of BSP, which broadened our understanding about the molecular mechanisms involved in ion-pair controlled release transdermal patches and contributed to the design of controlled release TDDS .

A systemic evaluation of drug in acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive patch in vitro and in vivo: The roles of intermolecular interaction and adhesive mobility variation in drug controlled release

Chao Liu,Peng Quan,Shanshan Li,Yongshan Zhao,Liang Fang

Though acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are widely used in transdermal drug delivery system , molecular details of drug-PSA interactions, PSA molecular mobility variations and their influences on drug skin permeation are unclear. In this study, three classes of acrylic PSAs containing hydroxyl (AAOH), carboxyl (AACOOH) and non-functional group (AAnone) were synthesized. Their abilities of controlling drug release were evaluated using propranolol (PRO) and zaltoprofen (ZAL) in vitro and in vivo . Interaction details were identified by FT-IR, solid-state NMR and molecular modeling. Thermodynamic activity of drug and strength of drug-PSA interaction were characterized using miscibility study. PSA mobility was characterized using thermal analysis and rheology study. Thus, ionic interaction reduced the thermodynamic activity of PRO and mobility of AACOOH, which made PRO-AACOOH obtain a significant lower bioavailability (11.8   ±   0.7%) than these of PRO-AAnone (40.7   ±   2.5%) and PRO-AAOH (42.3   ±   2.9%). Though thermodynamic activity of ZAL in AACOOH was lower than that in AAOH due to the hydrogen bonding , bioavailability of ZAL-AAOH (19.0   ±   4.1%) exhibited no significant difference with ZAL-AACOOH (15.4   ±   2.8%), mainly because AAOH mobility was decreased by ZAL. In conclusion, the strength, types and involved functional groups of drug-PSA interactions were identified. On this basis, it was found that different control patterns of drug release were not only caused by the thermodynamic or kinetic hindrance effects of drug-PSA interactions, but also influenced by the interactions introduced PSA mobility variations, which was an innovative mechanism of controlled release in transdermal patch . The conclusions extended our understanding about the mechanism of controlled drug release of drug-in-adhesive patch. In addition, they contributed to the design of TDDS and custom acrylic PSAs.

Thermoresponsive Water-in-Oil-in-Water Pickering Double Emulsions Stabilized with Biodegradable and Semicrystalline Poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(ε-caprolactone-co-δ-valerolactone) Diblock Copolymer Micelles for Controlled Release

Chao Lin,Pengju Pan,Guorong Shan,Miao Du

Water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) Pickering double emulsions are promising materials for the construction of carriers for water-soluble and oil-soluble molecules or drug delivery systems if the contradictive trade-off between their extreme stability and controlled release properties can be resolved. In this study, biodegradable and biocompatible poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(ε-caprolactone-co-δ-valerolactone) (PEG-b-PCVL) diblock copolymers with predesigned hydrophilic to hydrophobic block length ratios and nearly identical ε-caprolactone/δ-valerolactone molar ratio (8/2), were synthesized by ring-opening copolymerization. Then, they self-assembled to create semicrystalline micelles. The melting points of PEG-b-PCVL copolymers and their lyophilized micelles were within a physiological range of temperatures, as determined by differential scanning calorimetry. Water contact angle measurements provided evidence that the surface wettability of PEG-b-PCVL micelles could be tuned by the PCVL block mass fractions or temperature stimulus. Such PEG-b-PCVL micelles were employed as a single particulate stabilizer to develop Pickering double emulsions through a one-step emulsification technique. W/O/W Pickering double emulsions could be generated using relatively hydrophobic PEG-b-PCVL micelles with high mass fractions (exceeding about 89%) of PCVL blocks, and they displayed excellent long-term physical stabilities at room temperature. However, the Pickering double emulsions underwent a rapid microstructural transition into simple oil-in-water Pickering emulsions instead of complete demulsification at elevated temperature (37 °C), which was attributed to the hydrophilicity of micelles enhanced when the core-forming PCVL melted realized by temperature stimulus. Consequently, such W/O/W Pickering double emulsions stabilized solely with semicrystalline PEG-b-PCVL micelles exhibit thermal responsiveness, enabling them to release vitamin B12 encapsulated within the internal aqueous phase rapidly.

Design and manufacture of new hybrid hydrogel and superabsorbent polymer for controlled release of fulvic acid based on grafted xanthan gum/gelatin using electron irradiation and its use in fodder corn cultivation

Reza Hafezi Moghaddam,Shayessteh Dadfarnia,Ali Mohammad Haji Shabani,Seyed Pezhman Shirmardi

A humic acid-gelatin (HA-Gel) hydrogel, a gallic acid-xanthan gum (GA-XG) hydrogel, a HA-Gel/GA-XG hydrogel, and superabsorbent polymer (SAP) of HA-Gel/GA-XG/polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel were synthesized using electron beam irradiation method. The capability of synthesized hydrogels in loading and controlled release of fulvic acid (FA) was studied. The chemical and physical structure of sorbents was confirmed by various analyses. The effect of irradiation dose on mechanical properties, gel percentage, swelling, and absorbency under load (AUL) of the sorbents was investigated. By changing the hydrogel structures into the SAP form, its swelling capacity was increased from 37 to 320 g/g. Both hybrid hydrogel and SAP were reusable for up to 7 cycles. The maximum fertilizer loading capacities for SAP and hybrid hydrogel were 402.1 and, 175.5 mg g −1 , respectively. In comparison to hydrogels, the SAP showed a slower FA-release performance. Thus, in soil media, 86 % of FA was released in 15–20 days from the hybrid hydrogel while with the SAP, 81 % of FA was released in 30–35 days. The significant improvement in the growth of fodder corn treated with FA-loaded SAP in the greenhouse media in comparison to the control groups showed the effective performance of the designed SAP, favoring its practical applications.
