Enhanced degradation performance of bisphenol M using peroxymonosulfate activated by zero-valent iron in aqueous solution: Kinetic study and product identification

Jiayi Yao,Manqi Gao,Xiaofeng Guo,Fuxun Ai,Zunyao Wang

In the present work, we first examined the performance of zero-valent iron (Fe 0 ) activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the removal of that bisphenol M (BPM). In 90 min, 95.9 ± 1.0% of BPM (initial concentration of 10 μM) could be removed in the optimal reaction conditions: [BPM] 0 :[PMS] 0  = 1:40 (molar ratio), [PMS] 0 :[Fe 0 ] 0  = 1:3 (molar ratio), pH = 8.0 (maintained by 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution), T = 35 °C. Common environmental ions like HCO 3 − , Cl − , NO 3 − accelerated BPM degradation while NH 4 + hindered it. In radical quenching tests, sulfate radicals (SO 4 − ) were found to play a dominant role in BPM degradation, while hydroxyl radicals ( OH) were also detected. By high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry analysis, 13 products of BPM including small molecules, oligomers and hydroxylated derivatives were identified, and five possible degradation pathways were then proposed. The predicted acute toxicity of the reaction products was reduced after BPM was treated by Fe 0 /PMS. All these results prove that Fe 0 /PMS is an efficient, convenient, and environmentally friendly treatment method for the removal of BPM.

Self-assembly of m-phenylenediamine and polyoxometalate into hollow-sphere and core-in-hollow-shell nanostructures for selective adsorption of dyes

Xiaohui Cheng,Panpan Sun,Shanshan Zhang,Di Sun,Baolai Jiang,Wenshou Wang,Xia Xin

Supramolecular self-assembly is an effective method to assemble organic and inorganic units into various hierarchical structures with excellent properties and is widely used in material and life science. In this article, the self-assembled hollow-sphere and core-in-hollow-shell nanostructures composed of m -phenylenediamine and a novel Preyssler-type polyoxometalates (POM, K 12.5 Na 1.5 [NaP 5 W 30 O 110 ]·15H 2 O (abbreviated as P 5 W 30 )) without template were successfully realized by adjusting the non-covalent interactions. For comparison, we also selected o -phenylenediamine and p -phenylenediamine to investigate whether isomerides have different effects on the self-assembly behavior with P 5 W 30 . The results indicated that only m -phenylenediamine/P 5 W 30 can form hollow spheres and core-in-hollow-shell structure while o -phenylenediamine/P 5 W 30 and p -phenylenediamine/P 5 W 30 cannot which revealed that the self-assembly process can be regulated via isomer effects. Moreover, the detailed analysis of the formation of hollow spheres and core-in-hollow-shell structure are studied and the mechanism is mainly due to the Ostwald ripening . In addition, m -phenylenediamine/P 5 W 30 composite has a good adsorption capacity for methylene blue (MB) dyes, even in the presence of other dyes such as rhodamine B (RB) and amaranth (AR). Our findings further confirmed that supramolecular self-assembly between organic molecules and POM can unique a distinctive “bottom-up” strategy to construct diversiform structures with functional properties.

Novel poly(piperazine-amide) (PA) nanofiltration membrane based poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) hollow fiber substrate for treatment of dye solutions

Tao Wang,Xinping He,Ye Li,Jiding Li

A novel aromatic poly ( m -phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) hollow fiber substrate was first introduced to poly(piperazine-amide) (PA) composite membrane for nanofiltration. Chemical composition, morphological structure and top surface property were comprehensively characterized. Analyses indicated that a negative charged polyamide selective layer was successfully synthesized on PMIA substrate via interfacial polymerization. For nanofiltration tests, the as-prepared PA/PMIA hollow fiber membrane exhibited not only a superior permeation (104.13 ± 0.70 L·m −2 ·h −1 , 0.6 MPa), but also an excellent salt rejection in the order as: R N a 2 S O 4 RNa2SO4 (98.45%) >  R MgS O 4 RMgSO4 (97.98%) >  R CaC l 2 RCaCl2 (96.02%) >  R MgC l 2 RMgCl2 (95.74%) >  R NaCl (54.07%). Additionally, nanofiltration performance was evaluated with three kinds of anionic dyes (Chromotrope FB, Reactive Yellow 3, Direct Fast Blue B2RL) in varied conditions, including operating pressure, dye content, pH environment and salty co-exist. Evidence supported that an outstanding dye-removal ability was achieved using the developed PA/PMIA membrane, which was specifically higher than 97%. Integrate all the findings, this work provided a new PMIA based hollow fiber nanofiltration membrane, which should be promising in application of dye wastewater treatment.

A general strategy for the facile synthesis of AuM (M = Pt/Pd) alloyed flowerlike-assembly nanochains for enhanced oxygen reduction reaction

Li-Li He,Pei Song,Ai-Jun Wang,Jie-Ning Zheng,Li-Ping Mei,Jiu-Ju Feng

In this work, a general strategy was developed for the facile synthesis of bimetallic AuM (M = Pt or Pd) alloyed flowerlike-assembly nanochains (FANs) with the assistance of diprophylline as a structure-directing and stabilizing agent. The morphologies, crystal structures, and compositions of AuPt and AuPd FANs were investigated primarily by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The formation mechanism was discussed in some detail by varying the concentration of diprophylline. The as-prepared AuM FANs displayed improved catalytic activities and better stabilities for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) compared to commercial E-TEK Pt/C, Pt black and Pd black.

Ultra-flyweight hydrophobic poly(m-phenylenediamine) aerogel with micro-spherical shell structures as a high-performance selective adsorbent for oil contamination

Xun Song,Siwei Yang,Lin He,Shuai Yan,Fang Liao

In this paper, ultra-flyweight hydrophobic poly(m-phenylenediamine) aerogel (PmPDA) was fabricated via a simple two step approach from a poly(m-phenylenediamine) micro-spherical shell (PmPDMS). The PmPDA was first formed by freeze-drying and then cross-linked via the oxidative polymerization of surface groups following an annealing process. The PmPDA is hydrophilic before the annealing process and becomes hydrophobic (the contact angle is 103.7°) after it is annealed in air. Moreover, the obtained ultra-flyweight PmPDA (ρ = 0.8 mg cm−3) has a large surface area (338 m2 g−1), low thermal conductivity (0.0125 W m−1 K−1 at 25 °C) and excellent mechanical properties. Finally, the regenerated aerogels retain their original shape and ultrahigh absorption capability after more than 10 cycles, making PmPDA an ideal candidate for practical application in the absorption or removal of organics, particularly in environmental protection and pollution control.

Temperature-tunable catalytic property of Pd–M (Ag, Cu) bimetallic nanoparticles stabilized by thermal-sensitive PDEAm-g-PAN/PSt polymeric microspheres

Shi Dongjian,Sui Jing,Duan Fang,Chen Mingqing,He Bingxiao

Thermal-sensitive poly( N , N -diethylacrylamide) grafted poly(acrylonitrile/styrene) (PDEAm- g -PAN/PSt) polymeric microspheres were prepared from PDEAm macromonomer, St and AN by dispersion copolymerization . The polymeric microspheres had raspberry-like morphology with large surface area. Palladium–metal (Pd–M) (M: copper, Cu, silver , Ag) bimetallic nanoparticles were stabilized on the surface of the PDEAm- g -PAN/PSt microspheres via the coordinate interaction between amide groups in PDEAm and metal ions with the reduction of the corresponding ions. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) results confirmed the size and composition of the immobilized Pd–M nanoparticles. The Pd–M bimetallic nanoparticles showed superior catalytic efficiencies for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) than the monometallic nanoparticles. The catalytic activity of the Pd–M bimetallic catalysts could be controlled by the molar ratio of Pd and M ions and composition of Pd–M nanoparticles. Moreover, the catalytic property of the Pd–M nanoparticles could be regulated by temperature and increased with increasing the temperature above lower critical solution temperature (LCST). Furthermore, the Pd–M nanoparticles could be easily recycled and reused to catalyze 4-NP for five times without loss of activity. These bimetallic nanoparticles possess great potential in future practical application in catalytic technology.

Sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor for the detection of AFP based on Pd octahedral and APTES-M-CeO2-GS as signal labels

Yicheng Wei,Yan Li,Na Li,Yong Zhang,Tao Yan,Hongmin Ma,Qin Wei

In the present work, an ultrasensitive sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor based on a novel signal amplification strategy was designed for quantitative detection of alpha fetoprotein (AFP). Au nanoparticles with biocompatibility were electrodeposited on the surface of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) which can effectively capture and immobilize primary anti-AFP (Ab 1 ) to significantly amplify the electrochemical signal. Graphene Oxide and CeO 2 mesoporous nanocomposite functionalized by the 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane supported Pd octahedral nanoparticles (Pd/APTES-M-CeO 2 -GS) were utilized as labels of detection anti-AFP (Ab 2 ). Pd octahedral nanoparticles presented good catalytic activity towards the reduction of H 2 O 2 . Due to the large specific surface area and good adsorption properties of APTES-CeO 2 -GS nanocomposite, large amount of Pd octahedral nanoparticles could be immobilized, which could amplify the electrochemical signal and improve the sensitivity of the immunosensor. Under optimal conditions, the immunosensor exhibited wide linear range from 0.1   pg/mL to 50   ng/mL with a low detection limit of 0.033   pg/mL ( S / N =3) for AFP detection. In addition, high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, good reproducibility and stability were obtained for the immunosensor, which has a promising application for quantitative detection of other tumor markers in clinical diagnosis.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis PE_PGRS41 Enhances the Intracellular Survival of M. smegmatis within Macrophages Via Blocking Innate Immunity and Inhibition of Host Defense

Wanyan Deng,Quanxin Long,Jie Zeng,Ping Li,Wenmin Yang,Xinchun Chen,Jianping Xie

The success of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) as a pathogen is largely contributes to its ability to manipulate the host immune responses. The genome of M. tuberculosis encodes multiple immune-modulatory proteins, including several members of the multi-genic PE_PPE family. Despite of intense research, the roles of PE_PGRS proteins in mycobacterial pathogenesis remain elusive. The function of M. tuberculosis PE_PGRS41, characterized by an extended and unique C-terminal domain, was studied. Expression of PE_PGRS41 in Mycobacterium smegmatis, a non-pathogenic species intrinsically deficient of PE_PGRS, severely impaired the resistance of the recombinant to multiple stresses via altering the cell wall integrity. Macrophages infected by M. smegmatis harboring PE_PGRS41 decreased the production of TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6. In addition, PE_PGRS41 boosted the survival of M. smegmatis within macrophage accompanied with enhanced cytotoxic cell death through inhibiting the cell apoptosis and autophagy. Taken together, these results implicate that PE_PGRS41 is a virulence factor of M. tuberculosis and sufficient to confer pathogenic properties to M. smegmatis.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis PE_PGRS18 enhances the intracellular survival of M. smegmatis via altering host macrophage cytokine profiling and attenuating the cell apoptosis

Yang Wenmin,Deng Wanyan,Zeng Jie,Ren Sai,Ali Md Kaisar,Gu Yinzhong,Li Yangyuling,Xie Jianping

Mycobacterium tuberculosis PE/PPE family proteins, named after the presence of conserved PE (Pro-Glu) and PPE (Pro-Pro-Glu) domains at N-terminal, are prevalent in M. tuberculosis genome. The function of most PE/PPE family proteins remains elusive. To characterize the function of PE_PGRS18, the encoding gene was heterologously expressed in M. smegmatis , a nonpathogenic mycobacterium. The recombinant PE_PGRS18 is cell wall associated. M. smegmatis PE_PGRS18 recombinant showed differential response to stresses and altered the production of host cytokines IL-6, IL-1β, IL-12p40 and IL-10, as well as enhanced survival within macrophages largely via attenuating the apoptosis of macrophages. In summary, the study firstly unveiled the role of PE_PGRS18 in physiology and pathogenesis of mycobacterium.

Facile Synthesis of Cu2GeS3 and Cu2MGeS4 (M = Zn, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) Hollow Nanoparticles, Based on the Nanoscale Kirkendall Effect

Chunwei Dong,Dong Yao,Jianyou Feng,Tingting Huang,Xiyu Hu,Zhennan Wu,Yi Liu,Bai Yang,Hao Zhang

Hollow nanostructures have shown charming properties beyond their solid counterparts, but the synthesis of multinary chalcogenide semiconductors with hollow nanostructures remains challenging, because of their complex components. In this work, we demonstrate a facile one-pot method to synthesize Cu2GeS3 hollow nanoparticles (NPs) based on Kirkendall effect by using dissolved GeO2 as the Ge source. A theory model according to the diffusion kinetic and reaction kinetic is established to investigate the growth mechanism of Cu2GeS3 hollow NPs. By using Cu2GeS3 hollow NPs as the template, quaternary Cu2MGeS4 (M = Zn, Ni, Co, Fe and Mn) hollow NPs are further produced, which are more difficult to prepare, because of their excessive ion species. Furthermore, Cu2GeS3 hollow NP-based gas sensors are prepared, which exhibit outstanding sensitivity for the detection of ethanol gas, because of their large surface-to-volume ratio and small grain size.

Core–shell–shell heterostructures of α-NaLuF4:Yb/Er@NaLuF4:Yb@MF2 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) with remarkably enhanced upconversion luminescence

Yue Su,Xiuling Liu,Pengpeng Lei,Xia Xu,Lile Dong,Xianmin Guo,Xingxu Yan,Peng Wang,Shuyan Song,Jing Feng,Hongjie Zhang

Core–shell–shell heterostructures of α-NaLuF4:Yb/Er@NaLuF4:Yb@MF2 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) have been successfully fabricated via the thermal decomposition method. Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectroscopy, etc. Under 980 nm excitation, the emission intensities of the UCNPs are remarkably enhanced after coating the MF2 (M = Ca, Sr, and Ba) shell. Among these samples, CaF2 coated UCNPs show the strongest overall emission, while BaF2 coated UCNPs exhibit the longest lifetime. These results demonstrate that alkaline earth metal fluorides are ideal materials to improve the UCL properties. Meanwhile, although the lattice mismatch between the ternary NaREF4 core and the binary MF2 (M = Sr and Ba) shell is relatively large, the successfully synthesized NaLuF4:Yb/Er@NaLuF4:Yb@MF2 indicates a new outlook on the fabrication of heterostructural core–shell UCNPs.

Full-Spectral Fine-Tuning Visible Emissions from Cation Hybrid Cs1–mFAmPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, and I, 0 ≤ m ≤ 1) Quantum Dots

Daqin Chen,Xiao Chen,Zhongyi Wan,Gaoliang Fang

Full-color visible emissions are particularly crucial for applications in displays and lightings. In this work, we developed a facile room-temperature ligand-assisted supersaturated recrystallization synthesis of monodisperse, cubic structure Cs1–mFAmPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, and I or their mixtures Cl/Br and Br/I, 0 ≤ m ≤ 1) hybrid perovskite quantum dots (QDs). Impressively, cation substitution of Cs+ by FA+ was beneficial in finely tuning the band gap and in exciton recombination kinetics, improving the structural stability, and raising the absolute quantum yields up to 85%. With further assistance of anion replacement, full-spectral visible emissions in the wavelength range of 450–750 nm; narrow full width at half-maxima, and a wide color gamut, encompassing 130% of National Television System Committee television color standard, were achieved. Finally, Cs1–mFAmPbX3-polymer films retaining multicolor luminescence are prepared and a prototype white light-emitting diode device was constructed using green Cs0.1FA0.9PbBr3 and red Cs0.1FA0.9Br1.5I1.5 QDs as color converters, certainly suggesting their potential applications in the optoelectronics field.
